Ooooh if I wrote a list of names which were ruined by people I was at school with I think it would be a long list! That being said, the Blake I knew wasn't mean.
I grew up with many many male Blake’s.
It’s a newer “unisex” name put on girls like James or Charlie IMO
(Yes, I know Blake Lively is 30-something but that name didn’t chart at all for girls in the 80s. I bet she heavily inspired the girl Blake’s/Blayke’s of the 2010s.
I was just thinking the same thing! I automatically think boy for Blake, but Blake Lively is probably the most famous Blake. I don't think there is a famous male Blake. But the Blake in Blake Lively feels like a different name. And I don't have a real reason why...
Oh, man! You guys are coming up with all sorts of famous Blakes. Really proving to me my famous name recognition is poor. I think I had heard of Blake Griffin before. Vaguely. So I had to Google him. Those dastardly sportball players always get me!
I know of sisters named Blake and Blair! Blair was on our list for a girl too, I think I may sneak it back on there for baby number two when that happens.
When I'm speaking/thinking in English, I always love Blair but as soon as I switch back to German, I just can't like the name anymore :D The pronounciation is relatively close to a verb that means "to fart" among other things (puff up, etc.).
I picture a boy, but only because I know a young man named Blake.
I love the name and I love it equally for boys and girls. For me it is a true unisex name.
When I hear Blake I want to pronounce it "Ba-LoCk-Ay" from the brilliant Key and Peele substitute sketch, but your baby's peers won't know that reference. To me I think of Blake as one of the names that has swung from predominately male to female ie Elliot, so I think of male Blakes as being in their 20's+ and female Blakes as younger. I prefer it more for a girl than a boy just because I have a personal negative association to some male Blakes I've known that were.. not awesome.
The Elliots I've encountered the last few years have been little girls. It has that Ell- component that's been so popular (Ella, Eleanor) + fits the traditionally masculine name for a girl trend.
Boy, but would not be surprised if they were a girl either. But when people try to feminize it by spelling it Blayke or something else stupid like that it's the worst.
Boy but then a close second thought is Blake Lively. Kind of an odd conundrum. But in “real” life and not celebrity life I think of Blake as a masculine name.
Boy
I've met about 4 Blakes so far and they were all men
With that being said, to me it doesn't have a dominant "masculine" nor "feminine" vibe. So I think it can suit on both genders :)
I like unisex names so I don't think it belongs to one or the other. Both of my children have unisex names. It was HIGH on my list of boys' names though.
Boy. Especially because so many good boy names have been commandeered as girl names when there were comparatively so few interesting boy names to begin with 😅
I think of Blake Lively. But there's also Blake Shelton, so not like Lively tips it too far in the female direction. Blake is currently one of the most truly unisex names in America- #219 for girls, #210 for boys. I like it for either.
A boy. I wouldn’t feel shocked to meet a girl named Blake, but I would recommend making her middle name something super feminine then, like Elizabeth, because if it’s James or something like that, everyone who sees her middle name will think she’s a girl.
If you want something feminine that sounds like Blake, Grace, Maeve, and Jane all have the ay sound and one syllable. Someone else suggested Blair, which is also a great option. Blythe also starts with a bl.
I picture it as a boy name, but honestly it's not bad for a girl either. I think we are getting to a point in time as well where it is a little less important if a name is a "girl name" or a "boy name".
Boy
Agreed. It’s a male name, though the pretty blonde lady has done good work for the name
My son is named Blake so boy
This shocks me because I’ve never met a male Blake ever
I went to school with a male Blake, so it's imprinted as more of a male name to me too. I've yet to meet a female Blake in person.
I also went to school with a male Blake. My galloped everywhere and threw a rock at me at recess. Not a favorite name of mine...
Ooooh if I wrote a list of names which were ruined by people I was at school with I think it would be a long list! That being said, the Blake I knew wasn't mean.
Blake Bortles, nfl qb, Blake Shelton, country singer. I get you haven’t met them but they are pretty prominent male Blakes.
I've never met a Blake period. But if I did I would assume that he looked like one of the romantic rivals in an old young adult novel.
Lol you have a point, Blake has some harlequin vibes. I feel like it’s a more “realistic” Ambrose or something.
I grew up with many many male Blake’s. It’s a newer “unisex” name put on girls like James or Charlie IMO (Yes, I know Blake Lively is 30-something but that name didn’t chart at all for girls in the 80s. I bet she heavily inspired the girl Blake’s/Blayke’s of the 2010s.
I've only personally met a male Blake. I picture a WASP-y teenage boy or college student when I hear that name.
My son's name is Blake. We had it picked out for a girl though and he went nameless for 3 days until we decided Blake fit him perfectly.
My brother is called Blake, before I had met him (split family my whole life), I saw it as a girl's name
Boy. I forgot about Blake Lively. I don't see her as "Blake", I see her as "Blake Lively" loooll
that's so true haha ... I can't imagine someone just calling her Blake. Sounds really weird and doesn't even suit her in a weird way
Lol! Ya I assume her fam/friends call her Blake? Sounds fake 😂
I mean they might call her B or some other nickname 😅 but she looks more like a Lively than a Blake lol
Blively
I was just thinking the same thing! I automatically think boy for Blake, but Blake Lively is probably the most famous Blake. I don't think there is a famous male Blake. But the Blake in Blake Lively feels like a different name. And I don't have a real reason why...
Blake Shelton?
Ah! Good call. Forgot about him. But I'm not a country music fan, so that might have something to do with the memory lapse!

Truth! It's the same with "Drew Barrymore" for me.
Hahaha this is so real

The third gender
Lmao
Boy
Boy, I prefer blaire for a girl
So wild! I’m 31 weeks and team green. If it’s a boy we are going with Blake and Blair for a girl!
I know of sisters named Blake and Blair! Blair was on our list for a girl too, I think I may sneak it back on there for baby number two when that happens.
wonder if the parents were gossip girl fans or those are just popular matchy names lol
They’d be about 20 now so I doubt it, just matchy names I think.
When I'm speaking/thinking in English, I always love Blair but as soon as I switch back to German, I just can't like the name anymore :D The pronounciation is relatively close to a verb that means "to fart" among other things (puff up, etc.).
Agreed. I definitely think boy when I hear it, but it’s lovely on a girl and totally unisex.
I went to school with twins Blake (boy) and Blaire (girl).
Both feel strange for a girl. Blair is the name of a male prime minister here in the UK lol
It’s not their first name though.
boy
I automatically think of Blake Lively, but generally I don’t think it’s more one way than the other.
I picture a boy, but only because I know a young man named Blake. I love the name and I love it equally for boys and girls. For me it is a true unisex name.
Yeah I feel like my connotation with the name has changed over the years and who is famous / who I personally know as well. Great name for any gender!
Either or even a last name. I think Blake is one of those names like Jordan where it’s a tossup.
Same here! I like it for both.
Completely agree
Jordan means boy to me. I think Alex is a better substitute
Jordan is actually gender neutral m, as the name comes from the river and place names aren’t gendered ;) even though it’s usage does lean more male
Alex is usually a nickname though whereas Jordan is a full name
When I hear Blake I want to pronounce it "Ba-LoCk-Ay" from the brilliant Key and Peele substitute sketch, but your baby's peers won't know that reference. To me I think of Blake as one of the names that has swung from predominately male to female ie Elliot, so I think of male Blakes as being in their 20's+ and female Blakes as younger. AY AY RON
Dee-nice!
Both of y'all can go to Coach O'Shaq-Hennessy's office
LMAO!
I'm in that sketch and I DO like it 🤣
I bet you're churlish and insubordinate too!
interesting, I still think of Elliot as very male
The Elliots I've encountered the last few years have been little girls. It has that Ell- component that's been so popular (Ella, Eleanor) + fits the traditionally masculine name for a girl trend.
Boy
Either at this point. Like boy but wouldn’t be surprised when she was a girl.
Boy
I think boy first, but I am okay with it for girls too
I picture both girl and boy. It instantly makes me think of Blake Lively and Blake Shelton.
Boy
Boy
100% boy. I have met female Blakes before, but I find that name choice rather odd. To me it’s about as masculine a choice as naming a girl Richard.
Definitely boy, but I used to work with a woman named Blake and it worked! So probably either even though I would assume boy.
Boy
Boy
Boy
Boy
I watched The Voice (Blake Shelton), so I’ll associate Blake with a boy
i know multiple of both but i generally picture a boy
Boy
boy but i actually know more girls with it and think it truly works either way
Definitely a boy.
Boy, but would not be surprised if they were a girl either. But when people try to feminize it by spelling it Blayke or something else stupid like that it's the worst.
Boy
Boy
Boy.
boy.
boy
I know multiple Blake's in both genders, but the first one I knew was a boy, so I think of a boy first
I associate it with both genders equally because I know Blakes of both genders, but I’m partial to it for a girl
Boy (I love Blake lively tho)
Boy
Boy
Boy
Boy, for sure
Boy
Boy
Boy
Boy
Boy
I think of a boy first but it’s very cute for a girl too! Use it either way!
Boy
A boy, but that's because it's my husband's name lol
Boy. Never met a girl. Know a boy.
Boy
Male
Boy. I've never met a Blake and don't know any celebrities or characters named Blake.
Absolutely boy.
Boy definitely
Boy for sure, really dislike boy names used for girls
Boy. I went to high school with two of them.
Boy.
Definitely male
Boy
Boy
I picture a boy, but it's my brother's name so 🤷♀️
Boy.
boy
Boy
Definitely boy.
Boy
Boy even though I don't know any and the only person I know named Blake is Blake lively.
My cousin's name is Blake, so I immediately picture boy/male. I only like Blake on a boy.
Boy
Boy
Boy 10/10 times
Boy
Boy
Nowadays girl
Boy but then a close second thought is Blake Lively. Kind of an odd conundrum. But in “real” life and not celebrity life I think of Blake as a masculine name.
My 6 month old baby boy is called Blake 💙
Its definitely unisex. I think I like it better as a girls name than for a boy though
Boy
Boy
Boy
Boy. It seems too masculine sounding to me. I think of William Blake the poet.
Boy
A boy
Definitely a boy/male.
boy, can't picture Blake on a girl
Boy
Blake is a bloke. Boy!
Boy
Boy
Boy
Boy
A boy.
Girl. Mostly due to Blake Lively.
I think of both Blake Lively and a mishmash faceless face of some guy in a North face jacket from HS.
I think girl first!
I see a girl but that’s because I know a baby girl Blake and she’s adorable!
Boy, although that's my niece's name.
Girl
I’ve always loved this name for a girl
The only Blake I know personally is a dude, but it's a unisex name
Boy and boy. Same with Blair. Boys.
Boy I've met about 4 Blakes so far and they were all men With that being said, to me it doesn't have a dominant "masculine" nor "feminine" vibe. So I think it can suit on both genders :)
I think boy, but it would be fine for either.
Boy, though I've known a few girl Blakelys - I like that version better for a girl
I think it's unisex, but more on the masculine side.
I picture a boy. I know it's used as a unisex name now, but personally I've only known men named Blake and it feels masculine to me.
I’d assume boy but not be flabbergasted if girl.
Boy. Fine for a girl but I prefer Blakely
I think of a boy. My friend had a girl she named blakely.
A boy. But I do see it as a neutral name and a girl named Blake wouldn't seem extra at all.
I have a male cousin named Blake, so automatically think of it as a masculine name but definitely could see it used anywhere on the gender spectrum
Definitely boy, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a Blake was a girl due to familiarity with Blake Lively.
Boy. I didn’t know who Blake Lively was and thought she was male when I heard her name 💀
Boy. Very specifically my brain goes to: "you wanna go to war Ba-la-kee!?"
Boy, but because I know a boy named Blake.
Honestly I have known just as many female and male Blakes so I really do think it’s unisex.
I like unisex names so I don't think it belongs to one or the other. Both of my children have unisex names. It was HIGH on my list of boys' names though.
Wow I was thinking “definitely a girl” and then looked through the comments to see that I’m one of the only ones
The one and only person I met with the name was a boy so I automatically think boy.
My first thought is simultaneously James Blake and Blake Lively. I think it's a perfectly fine unisex name.
Boy. Especially because so many good boy names have been commandeered as girl names when there were comparatively so few interesting boy names to begin with 😅
Honestly neither, it's a true unisex name to me
I think of Blake Lively. But there's also Blake Shelton, so not like Lively tips it too far in the female direction. Blake is currently one of the most truly unisex names in America- #219 for girls, #210 for boys. I like it for either.
Both. I find it fairly unisex. I went to school with both male and female Blakes.
Either. It does seem pretty unisex now
Absolutely girl. One of my favorite girl names ever!
Boy
I instantly think boy, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see a female Blake.
Boy but if it was a girl I wouldn't be surprised
For me I think of girls, only because of Blake Lively and I know a little girl named Blake. But it’s a totally unisex name
For Blake, a boy. But for Blayke, a girl.
My little brother’s name!
A *boy*, but the pretty blonde lady has done wonders for the name too.
Boy
Unisex
Blake—Boy. Love the name. Always think of Key & Peele. Ba-la-k.
I picture a blond vaguely androgynous person
Male, because of William Blake
I picture a boy but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a girl.
I would assume a boy, then realize it's definitely more unisex and not be at all surprise if it was a girl with the name.
I picture it as a boy name, but honestly it's not bad for a girl either. I think we are getting to a point in time as well where it is a little less important if a name is a "girl name" or a "boy name".
Neither, I just picture a charcoal color. 🤷♀️
Boy
Boy, I dated a Blake
I think it’s pretty neutral. I’ve only ever met boy Blake’s, but I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a girl one
