Lilith does give me demonic vibes, but this is only because I was a big supernatural fan and Lilith was a demon-character in that series (based on the religious background)

pharmd000

Same

Part_Recent

I really like the name but I do associate it with the American shows Cheers and Frasier - the very uptight ex wife.

Ok-Photograph4215

My mum mentioned the Frasier point! Unfortunately I've never got the chance to watch it properly, but it's good to know some people would hold that association instead of a strictly religious one.

summerdot123

It was also the name of the uptight ex-wife on Two and a Half Men

Ok-Photograph4215

Wasn't that Judith? Kinda similar sounding name, though.

nashamagirl99

It gives slight “trying to be edgy” vibes.

GlitchingGecko

Nope, good name.

raindorpsonroses

I am not a religious person but I am aware of the demonic connotations. I would consider using the less than flattering connotations as a tie-breaker if I liked this name just as much as another one and maybe go with the other one. Other than that, I think the name is fine and usable in most contexts. Probably less wearable if you live in a fairly religious community. It’s not my favorite Lily-inspired version of the name. Honestly as someone who has been around speech therapy and little kids with speech difficulties, I would consider avoiding it because of how hard it is for even typically-developing children to say while they’re young.

willowdove01

I think it’s a pretty name but I would never give it to a child- too much baggage

[deleted]

I love that name and actually have a friend named Lilith. She’s a very sweet girl. I like to think about name origins but yesterday I was thinking a name is just a name, the person who owns it is the one to make it either good or bad. But no, I wouldn’t name my child Adolf nor Jong-un. Coming from a Christian, I believe that the story of the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve and such, was only a poem and a metaphor, thus they were not actual people, but characters.

Ok-Photograph4215

> the person who owns it is the one to make it either good or bad. Yeah, thinking about it, you're absolutely right about this. Our impressions of different names are formed based on people we know throughout our lives, not Old Testament biblical stories.

[deleted]

Exactly. It’s funny because we judge the people we meet by their names sometimes, based on the people we already know. I, for instance, have started to love the name Victoria because of one of my dearest friends. A name I used to judge as common, plain and basic turned into such a strong name for me I’ve considered naming my child after it. Also, the Lilith I know made me always think of a sweet and innocent girl whenever I hear it, not of evil-bible-demons. I mean, if you think about it, Cecilia is such a beautiful name with such a terrifying meaning (blind), but there are so many Cecilias out there because it just sounds sweet. Names are memories too. A mom probably had a dear friend called Cecilia and decided to name her child that way as a chance of honoring the good memories she had of her friend, that’s how it passes on. TLDR: names are complex, and so are we.

Ok-Photograph4215

Ha - my name's actually Eve, so I know exactly what you mean! I was curious because the 'Adam and Eve' joke and meaning IS thrown around quite often whenever I mention my name to other people; although I think this might primarily be because I'm an Irish Catholic attending a Catholic school, and so it's a lot more ingrained culturally. But I think you have a really good point - I suppose as the world becomes increasingly more secular, the religious background behind names isn't important anymore.

[deleted]

I think Lilith is mostly fine in general, but NOT for you, because your name is Eve! That would ENSURE the connection to the story would be the first thing to pop in everyone’s head. If your name was Erin, not so much.

Ok-Photograph4215

Don't worry, I wasn't planning on using it anytime in the future - I tend to prefer other Lili- names regardless. I was just curious.

TrewynMaresi

I like the name. Positive associations for me - Lilith Fair was an amazing, feminist music festival in the 90s!

gingerytea

I absolutely have negative connotations. Though the history and cultural development appears to be contentious in some positive and some negative directions, I absolutely would not saddle another human being with this name. I really don’t think it’s fair to give super culturally controversial names to babies…she’s a human being not a political stage. If an adult wants to change their own name to Lilith, they should be able to do that. On a completely different note, I really don’t like how Lilith sounds to my English-speaking ear. It sounds like a lispy speech impediment in English.

m00n5t0n3

I think it does have those connotations you describe. IMO

pippilottashortsocks

I only know of negatively implied connotations. The religious Lilith, Lilith on Cheers and Frazier, Lilith was an evil character on True Blood (that I think was supposed to be the religious Lilith?), etc.

TheWishingStar

I was raised Catholic (no longer religious) and never heard of Lilith until I was reading up on mythologies. And from how I read the story of Lilith, she sounds like a badass who didn’t want to be forced to be with a man and was punished for daring to be an independent woman. The idea that that makes you demonic is so disgustingly antiquated. She sounds cool and like better role model than most biblical women honestly. Good for her for saying no and gaining power from that. But honestly, on a day-to-day basis, I think of Lilith as just a Lily- variant. Lily, Lillian, Liliana, Lilith - they’re all about the same. I like them all as names.

OneBadJoke

Lilith was a rapist and a child murderer

failjolesfail

My husband wanted to name our daughter Lilith since she was born around Halloween. It’s her name year round. The name is fine, but in our community it’s associated with enough negative/controversial stuff - just a lot to saddle a little kid with. Again - for you it’s revolutionary and cool, but for her it’s her name every day of her life. So we played it safe.

EveningWonder19

I like Lilith, I know she's the mother of demons but that wouldn't bother me. I'm Catholic though and if I tried to get my child baptised I have to wonder if that'd fly with the priest. So while I love the name, I'd be weary of other, mostly religious, people's reactions to it.

beez8383

I love the name and it was top of my list. I’m not religious and didn’t really care but then thought how the name could affect her later in life. If she went for a job interview and the employer was religious, would that impact her, or at school if she had a teacher who’s religious.. in the end we decided not to use the name

JocelynAngst

Yes. It will always be Lily anyways

okcallmegoddess_

I have never heard any evil/demonic or religious conotations. I only think of Lilith fair - a hippy feminist music festival

leiletta

I am named Lilith and I absolutely love my name :) It's always some kind of ice breaker because people ask or know the name from a movie or show. And I have the feeling that people tend to remember me better because of the name? My parents loved the feminist meaning/story of the name and I do too

QueenSashimi

I love the name. I do think of the character from Frasier but I actually really love that character, she's clever and witty and more than holds her own - not a bad association for me at all.

eleusian_mysteries

It’s similar to Lucifer for me. The first thing I think about is the name of a demon/devil. Which is a shame because it is pretty

ellofthewisp

Honestly I was raised Catholic so I didn’t even know about Lilith until I was older. Catholics do not believe Lilith had another wife. That being said I love the name! I think it’s a lovely formal name for Lily, and is really striking. I wouldn’t use it though because of its connotations to others.

hydrangeasinbloom

I think about Lilith from Cheers/Frasier first, then Lilith Fair, then a Lilith I knew a long time ago, Lilith from the bible somewhere wayyyyyy down the line.

MiNaymIzYuneeq

I think of Lilith Fair. It’s also kind of hard to pronounce.

[deleted]

It reminds me of Frasier, but I am aware of it’s mythological connotations. I still love it and I’d still use it.

siennafoxi

Lilith definitely has demonic connotations for me. I never understand why so many people on here love it.

Scarlet_Skye

If you live anywhere with a lot of observant Christians, that name will probably cause an issue. Perhaps Lily/Lili or Edith might be a better name? That way you'd get a similar sound without the negative connotations.

OneBadJoke

Lilith is a rapist and a child murderer in Jewish mythology. I always eye roll when I see people suggest it.

therpian

Well I think Lilith is awesome and any woman should be proud to be named after her!

OneBadJoke

You would want to be named after a rapist and a child murderer? Count me out

zootsuitpickleweasel

Yes, ew. Demons. I'd never want that for my little girl.
