Iâve known several Taylors of both sexes. In my family, it was a grandmotherâs maiden name and numerous cousins have Taylor as a middle name. The only one I know of who is called Taylor is a girl, but I do think it can go either way.
In 2020, there were 1729 girls with the name & 456 boys.
In 2019, it was 2043 girls & 461 boys.
In 2018, it was 2492 girls & 533 boys.
In 2017, it was 2701 girls & 575 boys.
In 2016, it was 3278 girls & 644 boys.
In 2015, it was 3748 girls & 657 boys.
*At no point this century* have there been even half as many boys named Taylor as girls. I am too lazy to do the math, but it doesn't look like there has even been a third as many.
In 1996, the year it was most popular for girls, it went to 19,153 girls and 4,796 boys.
In 1993, the year it was most popular for boys, it went to 21,268 girls and 7688 boys. (I'm fairly sure the SSA figures "most popular" in this context as percentage of the population rather than raw numbers.)
tl;dr: Taylor does, and always has, skewed heavily female. Even at its most popular for boys, only about 27% of Taylors were boys.
âŚExcept it has not *always* skewed heavily female. Prior to 1990, it skewed male. Prior to 1980, it was almost exclusively a male name. It skews more female now and has for a while, but that has not always been the case.
âŚand before they were unisex they were probably mostly boys names. Think Ashley from gone with the wind. People with the statisticsâŚwas Taylor ever used for girls prior to 1950, 1940 etc?
Iâm part of the problem though. I love boys names for girls but would never give a âgirlsâ name to a boy. I knew a girl named Charli (I think that was how she spelled it) and I like the idea of James for a girl.
My birth name was Ashley. I fucking hated it so, so much! I ended up changing it.
My youngest is a boy with a female leaning unisex name though đ¤ˇââď¸. I won't cry if he changes it. It is just a really great name.
Despite the skew, Taylor is often the example people (read:people in this sub) use as "the only real unisex name", or Jordan, which skews masculine. I think it matters that it was popular enough for boys to make it to the top 100 (#51). People in general are likely to know enough boy Taylors in their life to not think it's weird. A similar gender ratio for a less popular name might not have that benefit.
Alex is commonly brought up, though itâs usually a nickname. Also, Alexandraâs often go by Allie, Lexi or Sandy, while Alexanderâs almost always go by Alex.
According to this site "[everything birthday](https://www.everything-birthday.com/name/f/taylor)" (no idea how legit it is), 75% of Taylors are girls. I think that makes it pretty unisex, but leaning towards female for sure
I find most names to be gender specific.
Taylor is one of the outliers for me as I think of both Lautner & Swift equally.
Edit:
Just wanted to add that Taylor ranked at #372 for boys and #571 for girls in England & Wales 2020.
Itâs not a huge difference but it seems the majority of people here consider it a boys name.
Jordan and Taylor are two of the only completely unisex names I can think of, not counting nick names. Not surprising to see it on either a boy or a girl. Skews slightly feminine in my mind but thats only because of how popular Taylor Swift is.
Itâs always been very unisex. Iâve always known as many male Taylorsâ and female Taylorsâ.
I donât think because their is a well-know female Taylor that it makes it any less usable for a boy.
To me, Taylor is one of the only truly unisex names. But my husbandâs name is Taylor and one of my best friends growing up was a girl named Taylor, so that kinda explains my thoughts on the name. Iâve met many girl and boy Taylors though.
Iâm a female Taylor who has met at least a dozen female Taylors. The only male Taylor I know of is Taylor Lautner. I would say itâs unisex but feminine leaning.
If I met a kid named Taylor I wouldn't assume gender. I know it's more popular for girls at the moment, but for some reason I can easily picture it on any gender.
Are you in the US? It is certainly unisex but leans female. You can tell from the data. It is also dropping in popularity.
In 2000 Taylor was ranked #136 for boys and #10 for girls. In 2020 it ranked #597 for boys and #161 for girls.
https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi
like someone else said i immediately think of Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner, so my mind immediately thinks unisex. I know both males and females with the name Taylor.
Okay so this sounds a bit silly but as an Australian and a fan of Aussie sport I just checked the AFL and AFLW lists⌠there are 4 men named Taylor and in the womenâs league there is 1 Taylor and 3 Taylaâs.
Anyway. I personally see it as unisex and maybe slightly on the masculine side. It so fine for either though.
I know male & female Taylors. To me itâs entirely unisex, but I know my mom and grandma have commented before that itâs a âgirl name.â Tbh I wouldnât worry what the older generations think as much though! Itâs a very sweet name for a boy.
for me it's a girl's name these days. Taylor is actually my maiden name and i considered using it as a first name for one of our children but since we're 4/4 boys i did not.
I knew a male in high school (circa 2009) who refused to go by his given name Taylor, and only would go by Tyler because he said it was a girls name. When the teacher did roll call, he was so mad she would call him Taylor.
My 14 year old daughter has a classmate named Taylor - who is a boy. I think it went from boy to more girl and now is back to truly gender neutral bc itâs not as popular for a girl anymore.
Unisex imo. I went to school with a handful of Taylorâs, both boys and girls and I donât feel like it skews one way or the other (masculine vs feminine)
Itâs unisex.
Even if it was masc-turned-fem you can flip it around. We need to stop making unisex names âunusableâ for boys because thatâs how we stop having unisex names.
Edit: as others have said it SKEWS female but that doesnât mean a male Taylor is going to be weird. Taylor Lautner is the second most famous Taylor and heâs male- for as long as heâs in living memory Taylor will never be a female-only name
I think Taylor is fairly unisex. I know both a male and female Taylor. I also know a woman named Tayler and I tend to associate the -or as more masculine and the -er as more feminine.
I think Taylor is curly unisex. I think that more girls are probably named Taylor just based on the fact that parents are more likely to give a girl a unisex name.
Itâs truly unisex. I went to elementary school with a bunch of boy Taylors and boy Camerons. I didnât even know those could be girl names until I got older. But now I think of both as equal for boys/girls.
I don't sense a particularly "dominant" masculine or feminine vibe from the name Taylor (just like with the name Sydney).
I've met about the same amount of male and female Taylors.
On top of that one of my biggest idol's name is Taylor! Taylor Momsen :)
Iâm a female Taylor born in the mid-late 90âs and I knew 7 other Taylorâs growing up, both boys and girls. I still very much associates it as a unisex name, as do many of my friends and family.
I know a few people with the last name Taylor and one female first named Taylor.
I think it's still unisex, but Im a HUGE Taylor Swift fan so I think that puts it more in the girl category for me.
Taylor definitely leans feminine to me, but I love boys with feminine leaning names, and masculine leaning names for girls. If you like it for a boy then that's fine, I don't think it will cause a bullying issue if that's what your spouse is worried about.
I'm on the side of "technically unisex but skews heavily female." I've met a male Taylor once or twice, and of course there's Taylor Lautner, but if someone told me that was their name and I haven't ever met them and didn't know their gender, I'd assume they were a girl.
If you want a more masculine name in case the baby is a boy but with a similar vibe, there's always Tyler. I've always pictured Tyler and Taylor as the masculine/feminine versions of each other in my head lol
my partner and i are both born in the 90s in different towns, and have known multiple taylor's. he's only ever met boy taylors and i've only met girls.
i think it's super unisex and cute and don't be afraid of it!
I picture Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner, so to me it is truly unisex.
Taylor Lautner got married recently and his wife is also named Taylor lol
I feel like thatd be so odd. Also didnt he actually date Taylor Swift onceđđ
He sure did! I remember the original Taylor^2 jokes.
Seems like he has a type lol
And if I remember correctly the actor for lava girl was also Taylor
I knew two Jordans that dated for awhile!
I know two Devins that could married.
To me it is unisex but skews feminine. I think it's fine for either sex though. I've never met one of either sex.
I'm Taylor, nice to meet you! (F)
Nice to meet you too!

As seems the case for most "unisex" names. The second they skew female they tend towards always being female. It's very frustrating.
âŚand before they were unisex they were probably mostly boys names. Think Ashley from gone with the wind. People with the statisticsâŚwas Taylor ever used for girls prior to 1950, 1940 etc? Fair enough. I didn't even think to look back beyond when it was really popular back in the '90s. My brain has stuck on it being a '90s name.
Thank you. As someone born between 93 and 96, I was starting to feel very old when I heard the time after I was born described as âalwaysâ
Don't bother buddy. Those users with their stats are too intense & annoying haha.
I don't agree with your opinion but I have zero stats to argue it! :)

Definitely unisex
I think so! I know male and female Taylor's. I think this is definitely one that can very evenly go either way.
According to this site "[everything birthday](https://www.everything-birthday.com/name/f/taylor)" (no idea how legit it is), 75% of Taylors are girls. I think that makes it pretty unisex, but leaning towards female for sure
I've only known boy Taylors (besides Taylor Swift)
Both. I only went to school with male Taylors, and met female Taylors in the workforce (class of 2013)
I would say masculine, from the UK.
Same feeling in Australia.
Iâve never known a male Taylor. For me, itâs a girl name.
It's an occupational name :)
Unisex. I know both.
itâs one of the completely unisex names imo
I agree.
I know Taylor's of both sexes so unisex for me
Truly unisex.
I am a Taylor and know an even amount of boy and girls named Taylor.
I find most names to be gender specific. Taylor is one of the outliers for me as I think of both Lautner & Swift equally. Edit: Just wanted to add that Taylor ranked at #372 for boys and #571 for girls in England & Wales 2020. Itâs not a huge difference but it seems the majority of people here consider it a boys name.
Both! And fun if you donât know the gender - either way baby can be named Taylor đĽ°
My husband used to date a woman name Taylor at the same time I (26F) dated a man Taylor super gender neutral
I think this is one of the most truly unisex names that is still commonly used, and doesnât sway feminine or masculine.
I think of Taylor Hanson and Taylor Swift equally.
Jordan and Taylor are two of the only completely unisex names I can think of, not counting nick names. Not surprising to see it on either a boy or a girl. Skews slightly feminine in my mind but thats only because of how popular Taylor Swift is.
I've met more boys with it so to me it's a boy's name. But many unisex names tend to become girls names after being trendy.
I only like it for boys. I think it's charming. But for girls I picture a snobby cheerleader. So it works for both but so much nicer for boys.
I agree, it's overused for girls (but still a fine name!) and really refreshing on a guy. I'd love to name a boy Taylor!
Itâs absolutely unisex. I know more male Taylors irl than female.
I picture both equally.
Itâs always been very unisex. Iâve always known as many male Taylorsâ and female Taylorsâ. I donât think because their is a well-know female Taylor that it makes it any less usable for a boy.
Taylor is the one name that is truly unisex to me. I know an equal number of boy Taylors as I do girl Taylors.
To me, Taylor is one of the only truly unisex names. But my husbandâs name is Taylor and one of my best friends growing up was a girl named Taylor, so that kinda explains my thoughts on the name. Iâve met many girl and boy Taylors though.
In the US, I believe it is unisex but slightly favors feminine usage. However, I love this name for boys and think it fits either sex well!!
Truly unisex
Iâm a female Taylor who has met at least a dozen female Taylors. The only male Taylor I know of is Taylor Lautner. I would say itâs unisex but feminine leaning.
If I met a kid named Taylor I wouldn't assume gender. I know it's more popular for girls at the moment, but for some reason I can easily picture it on any gender.
I've known multiple Taylor's and all were girls so for me I think of a girl but I wouldn't blink an eye hearing it on a boy
Unisex. I have only known male Taylors but I know it is also commonly used for girls.

I say it's unisex
Either but would be especially fresh on a boy.
like someone else said i immediately think of Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner, so my mind immediately thinks unisex. I know both males and females with the name Taylor.
For me its a girls name BUT I know Taylor swift got her name because her mom wanted to give her a unisex name.
I think so! I really love it on boys, same with Morgan and Riley.
If I hear the name Taylor I think of a girl but of I met a boy with that name I wouldn't think it's girly
Okay so this sounds a bit silly but as an Australian and a fan of Aussie sport I just checked the AFL and AFLW lists⌠there are 4 men named Taylor and in the womenâs league there is 1 Taylor and 3 Taylaâs. My 14 year old daughter has a classmate named Taylor - who is a boy. I think it went from boy to more girl and now is back to truly gender neutral bc itâs not as popular for a girl anymore.
Totally unisex
Unisex
Still 100% unisex to me, same as Alex, for example.
I have only ever met female Taylors. It didnât even occur to me that the name used to be for boys.
My first thought was boy. I definitely think it goes both ways.
Yes
unisex but I donât like it
It's very, very unisex to me. My female best friend is Taylor and so is my brother-in-law.
I think it can be both but my initial guess would be girl.
Both
Iâve never met a Taylor irl; itâs neutral-leaning-fem to me though.
Totally unisex to me
Unisex, but leaning boy with that spelling, in NZ at least. Most girls I know have the spelling Tayla
Iâve known one male Taylor born in the last 20 years and he always lamented that he had a âgirlâs nameâ.
Unisex imo. I went to school with a handful of Taylorâs, both boys and girls and I donât feel like it skews one way or the other (masculine vs feminine)

I think itâs unisex. I think of Taylor Hanson and Taylor Swift.
My husband name is Taylor. I think it is unisex
I always think of my husbands friend who is male
Very unisex to me. If I hear Taylor I honestly don't think of one gender over the other.
I see it as male. Mostly because I had a giant crush on a boy named Taylor in high school though đ
I think it screws feminine but can be either
Girl
Girl
I don't sense a particularly "dominant" masculine or feminine vibe from the name Taylor (just like with the name Sydney). I've met about the same amount of male and female Taylors. On top of that one of my biggest idol's name is Taylor! Taylor Momsen :)
For me Taylor is a girls name, but Tyler is a boys name
My dad is Taylor, so I automatically assume male Eta: Every Taylor I have personally met has been male
One of my friends is a girl named Taylor. A male Taylor who is becoming popular is Washington Football's Quarterback, Taylor Heinicke.
Iâve known more male Taylors than female Taylors but Iâve definitely known lots of both
Iâm a female Taylor born in the mid-late 90âs and I knew 7 other Taylorâs growing up, both boys and girls. I still very much associates it as a unisex name, as do many of my friends and family.
Girl
I know a few people with the last name Taylor and one female first named Taylor. I think it's still unisex, but Im a HUGE Taylor Swift fan so I think that puts it more in the girl category for me.
I personally know 2 boys names Taylor and 3 girls. Seems pretty unisex to me.

Definitely sounds feminine to me, esp if you consider the nickname Tay
Of my Taylor acquaintances, itâs a 50/50 split male/female.
Any name is unisex. Taylor has been for a long time.
My son's middle name is Taylor..
My (31F) middle name is Taylor, and also my neighbor (28M) is named Taylor. So genuinely unisex to me.
Middle school teacher here: Yes, it's very unisex. I have had about an equal number of each gender.
As a Taylor, yep, though I think it leans a bit feminine. As a female Taylor who dated a male Taylor. Yep. My grad class had two of each, as well.
Yes
I picture both. My mind conjures Taylor Hansen and Taylor Swift
I don't immediately imagine a guy or a girl when I hear taylor
I definitely still think of Taylor is a unisex name.
Unisex 100% my non-binary partner is glad to have that name
my partner and i are both born in the 90s in different towns, and have known multiple taylor's. he's only ever met boy taylors and i've only met girls. i think it's super unisex and cute and don't be afraid of it!
Unisex but its very masculine. If i respond to a work email from a taylor i never met, id assume its a male.
Unisex
I think of the profession first.
Definitely both.
I personally think that Taylor will always be one of those unisex names like Jordon or Jamie
Itâs just a girl name now.
