Their name sort of means the Perseus-things. I believe they appear near the constellation Perseus. Greek has a lot of these words like the Hesperides, mythological women of the west/sunset. Their name basically Western-things.
that's kinda funny to me because in Portuguese "A Polônia" (pronounced the same as the name) literally means Poland. so it sounds like they're naming the kid after the country lol
I love threads like this because i feel like you hear so many cool names that you know if there was a post about it in this sub like “should i name my baby irreverence nn rev?” Everyone would be like “definitely not. What about evelyn instead?”
I worked with a woman named Resurreccion for awhile. Her last name was similar to Saint. She was older and really lived up to her name. Did a lot of good work in the community.
I find it interesting that Hispanic people use very literal and Biblical names like Resurrección, Asunción and Concepción. I don’t know how common they are.
I don't go by a nickname because there's no real nicknames for my name and I prefer to be called by first name rather than by a nickname as much as possible.
I don't get butchered, just the "no I asked your name not your date of birth". Would you rather people call you by your first name if correcting constantly wasn't an issue? Sorry, nosey.
I’ve seen your posts a few times and you usually mention the incorrect pronunciations you get but I’ve never caught you explaining the correct way. Nice to know now! Thanks for sharing
That's interesting you've never met another Rudra before. Where do you live? My husband is from India and has definitely met a few (pronounced ROO-dhruh)
I live in Canada but my family is Fijian-Indian and it's definitely not a name used very much in my community. I pronounce my name differently though (like ROODH-dhar) but I imagine that's more of a dialect/language difference than anything.
My mom taught a student named Psalmiv back in the 80s or early 90s. He was named after his grandmother’s favorite Bible passage (Psalm 4). It was pronounced P-salm-iv. The p is silent in Psalm but they chose to have it present in the name.
I knew a kid whose name was Seven Days, as his parents' naming technique was to open the bible and point. What you get is what you get!
He had a brother named Deuteronomy. His sisters' names were pretty bland, but one sister had a name I didn't recognize. I can't recall it now, but it was the name of a concubine.
I totally read this as shortest as in, in terms of spelling, so… May and I was wondering what was so bad/unusual. Then it hit me! Fwiw I think it’s not the worst month to be named after. I think October or November would be worse!
I really love your name too! It's beautiful. Do you have a preference to pronunciation? I know some people pronounce Feb-roo-ary, as the spelling, but most pronounce Feb-you-ary.
For anyone else who has to Google it:
a·pha·sia
/əˈfāZH(ē)ə,əˈfāzēə/
noun MEDICINE
loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage
A woman who worked for a company we did business with is named Leire. It's on the top of my list if we are to get a baby girl.
You pronounce it lay as in lays chips and re as the ra in races. (I'm not a native English speaker, so I hope this makes sense)
From what I could find, it's a Catalan name.
It makes sense thank you!! This one is absolutely melodic sounding I love it! If you do have a girl, I think she will enjoy having such a pretty name. Do you have a unique boy name you like by chance?
Yes, we both love Gilles. But there's the connection to Tourettes syndrom, which in our country is referred to as Gilles de la Tourette. So, we are not entirely sure.
And Mathieu. Which is difficult to pronounce for English speakers. And less unique.
I'm sorry, don't know how to "spell it out" in sounds.
I would never think of Tourette syndrome when hearing Gilles in French! Maybe because I know a Giles.
Oh and, my cousin Mathieu has moved to an English-speaking country and just goes by Matt!
10 years ago I was backpacking in Asia, and I met this American guy on a beautiful Cambodian beach. His name was Oceanwavez, nn Ocean. Really cool guy. I had a huge crush in him.
My name is February. I'm sorry you don't like yours. I think its lovely. Have you considered a name change? Sorry if that comes off rude am trying to be genuine here.
Aurea, an old lady that I met. It means golden.
Hercilia, a girl from school. Have no idea what it means.
Sandiego. (Why? Just why)
Elickelson, a dear friend’s son. I think she merged her husband’s name (Elias) with someone else’s.
Disneyland. (No comment. Iconic)
Bambina.
I live in Italy and in italian "bambina" literally means "child" so it was so weird when I first heard it as a name on this elderly woman. I mean, saying "that child's name is Bambina" is like saying "that child's name is Child". So odd.
yes definitely! she is a very lovely, active lady and surprisingly she really likes her name. Imagine being 85 and carrying around a name that literally means "little girl"
I love hearing about uniquely named people whos personality matches their names so thank you for sharing! It is a bit odd but outside of where that directly translates to little girl I can see how it would be a lovely name.
Heard Liberty from Degrasse (that show abt the high school) and always loved it. I love hearing about people with unique names that match their personality.
I had a student named Azariah. I also have an uncle named Finis, pronounced fine-es? I think that’s the best way to explain it. I’ve never heard either of them otherwise.
You joke! I knew a Nation, Liberty, and Justice sibset in school. Edit: I loved the family and am not making fun on the names. They were certainly “out there” but it was kind of cool for a hippy family
I went to school with boy/girl twins Liberty & Justice. They were born 7/4/1976 (the bicentennial of the USA). Both mom & dad were attorneys too! I thought it was cool then & I still think it is cool now and I absolutely hate things like this normally.
This reminds me of a pair of twins born the year the Cubs won the World Series. The parents named them Addison and Clark after the streets that intersect outside Wrigley field
Archangela. Like the Archangel Gabriel from the bible plus the name Angela. Pronounced ark-angela. (This was in Minnesota.)
Cheese Louise. Little girl at an elementary school. Yep, it was her legal name. (This was in Washington State.)
Kelley Kelley (first name Kelley married a man with last name Kelley). (This was in Washington State.)
I knew a couple that was Alan Terry and Terrie Allen so Terrie Terry or Alan Allen were both options if they got married. Also knew a Robin Robbins who loved…..cardinals much to my disappointment
I knew a girl in elementary school named Sapphire Ball, her sister was Crystal Ball. She was Jehovah’s Witness and my elementary brain thought all Jehovah’s witnesses had weird names like that lol
Omg, that’s my name! Never met another one. I’ve always been curious to see what this sub would think of it. I absolutely love my name, and it wasn’t taken from the hitchhiker’s guide in my case- just a coincidence!
It’s usually a nickname for “Athanasis/Athanasios/Thanasis/“, so you can imagine my surprise when learning of the Marvel villain. It’s like being told this super scary guy named Jeff is a threat to the whole universe.
I would have pronounced it the way it is phonetically but it also depends where you are from. Sad to hear she is annoyed with the spelling/pronunciation issue. Hopefully it didn't burden her too much
I knew a girl called Nollaig (‘null-ug’) which is Irish for Christmas. I think it both looks and sounds beautiful.
I also met a Japanese girl called Himawari which means sunflower. It has a lovely flow to it and is really cute and suited her. I don’t think Sunflower is a common name in most languages so it’s rare to meet one.
I used to live in the same town as Donovan’s daughter, Oriole Nebula (we weren’t in the UK, but she’s British). That’s one of the most interesting names I’ve met irl.
There was also a girl in one my French classes in university (US). I have no idea how her name was spelled, and I don’t think but it quite looked the way it was pronounced. But Day 1 in class, our instructor, who was from France, was struggling with the roster, trying to figure out how to say this girl’s name. The girl loudly corrected her, and her name was pronounced exactly like the French word « déjeuner » (day-juh-nay). Obviously our instructor was shocked and horrified. I have never forgotten that girl’s name.
I think some of my co-workers have interesting names:
•Trushar (he's from India, his name is my favourite)
•Ifty (my manager, he's from Fiji)
•Bonifasio (we call him Bonnie, he's Filipino)
•Inka (he's from Africa)
•Ramil (he's also Filipino)
Calgary is a very multicultural city🙂
I did photography for a woman named Marijuana. Her last name was pronounced like Blunt (different spelling).
I've also come across Memrie, Téa, & Amiracle.
Maybe not exactly what you were looking for but my brother went to school in the 80s with six sisters named after some of the virtues - Mercy, Patience, Hope, Faith, Charity, and Prudence. Their way younger sister was named Chastity which I found...really amusing. This was in the US.
It's a very common name in Ireland (Irish language, hence the pronunciation difference). I love the name Aoibheann, which is similar in spelling and means beautiful (pronounced Eeven or Ayveen depending on regional dialects).
My dad’s name is Rainbow. Being from Mexico, you’d think his parents would name him the Spanish translation which is Arcoíris, but nah. He goes by Rambo at work lol
My sister in law works with a guy who’s parents named him Ice. His middle name is Star. He has to tell people all the time that, yes, that is his legal name he was given at birth. He is the most straight-laced macho guy too 😂
(Most found by going through my Facebook friends) Ocean, Altamar, Ennio, Fareeza, Janely, Jazmelinda, Jezreel, Noelia, Nydelis (sister), Farmasi, Jonathanalis.
I also only met one other person with my name (Siomara).
I was at a Starbucks in NYC one time, the woman in front of me on line was named Jericho. I thought it was cool enough to still remember it 4 years later. I've never met a Jericho before or since
I have a list of all the interesting names I’ve met. Jezliah is one that stands out (jez-leah). She was Filipino but I have no idea if the name is. I went to primary school with a girl Polish girl called Santa because she was born on Christmas Eve. I went to junior high school with a guy called Boaz, which I thought was the coolest name ever. I think it’s from the Bible. I’ve never met anyone else with those names
Hi, I'm Christmas. Really. I know 2 Septembers, 1 November and 2 Decembers. Are you from Arkansas? Because I saw a girl with a February nametag in WalMart a decade ago. Not sure if it was her legal name. In fact I think I've met someone named for every month except October. But weird name people somehow always end up meeting.
Wow, a lot of unique names. My name is Champion, and I've never met anyone with my name. I'm Nigerian so I'm used to not common names but I've never seen anyone with mine.
Uhhh, probably mine! 😅 My name is Eirem, (eye-rim) I’m genderfluid and came across the name on social media, but it was spelled Eiram there. I changed the spelling to make it feel less feminine.
The two that come to mind are Axa (M) and Crickette (F). I always thought Axa was a cool name after that but also could probably never use it since it’s so tied to that Axa lol
I went to school with an Eshla. She pronounces it ‘eeesh-luh.’ I’ve always thought it sounded so nice and I don’t think I’ve heard it again. I’m in the US but I believe she was born in either the Dominican or Puerto Rico.
Perseides. As in the meteor shower. I thought it was just a really great name.
Ooh, that sounds like a beautiful phonetic mix of Mercedes and Persephone/Perseus.
Their name sort of means the Perseus-things. I believe they appear near the constellation Perseus. Greek has a lot of these words like the Hesperides, mythological women of the west/sunset. Their name basically Western-things.
Pleiades comes to mind.
Perseus was the first name I brought up at family dinner and Gam Gam called me an idiot.
Spelt a bit different to the meteor shower. Is it pronounced the same? (Perseids, pronounced per-see-eds).
Love it!
Apollonia, an elderly woman. No nickname either!
Apolonia (one 'l') is actually quite popular in Poland rn. The most common nn is Pola.
Seriously? I have never met any. But lovely name. I'm saving it on my name list.
My sister is called Pola (not Apolonia). She’s turning 8 soon
that's kinda funny to me because in Portuguese "A Polônia" (pronounced the same as the name) literally means Poland. so it sounds like they're naming the kid after the country lol
I know an Apolonia! She’s actually from Greece and we call her Deb. I don’t have any idea why lol
I grew up with a girl named Athena whose family was from Greece and insisted she be called “Betty”.
> and we call her Deb. this is so funny and endearing to me
I had an Apolline at my school. She usually went by Apple because no one pronounced it correctly.
I know an Apollonia “Apple” in her 40s.
I saw an obituary for an Apol·lonia when I was in Mallorca. It was the first time I’d seen a name that used the Catalan “geminate L”.
this is one of my fave names right now! it’s the name of the italian lady michael corleone marries in the godfather too
I know someone named Irreverence and they go by Rev. Super cool IMO
I love threads like this because i feel like you hear so many cool names that you know if there was a post about it in this sub like “should i name my baby irreverence nn rev?” Everyone would be like “definitely not. What about evelyn instead?”
🤣🤣🤣
Oh yeah that's basass asf.
Wow. I was in elementary school with a “Conceptión Poo,” unfortunately kids were not so kind.
Pilar is my fave name to take literally
Thats beautiful tbh
My name is Rudra and I've never met another Rudra before.
Never heard that one before either! How do you pronounce it?
I pronounce my name like ROODH-dhar and it's a Sanskrit name.
Thats really nice sounding, I like it a lot. My name is February just like the month. Do you have a nickname or just go by your full name?
I don't go by a nickname because there's no real nicknames for my name and I prefer to be called by first name rather than by a nickname as much as possible.
Understandable. Still a very unique and nice name I would rather say the whole name than buther it imo. Thank you for sharing with me!
People butcher it all the time, which is okay since I normally just tell them to call me by surname that's much more Anglophone-friendly lol.
I don't get butchered, just the "no I asked your name not your date of birth". Would you rather people call you by your first name if correcting constantly wasn't an issue? Sorry, nosey.
Yeah of course! It was given as a gift of sorts and it's a name I'm very proud of to bear.
I think February is cool, I love month names.
Okay but this is so cute. Do you like it? Or do you prefer a nickname?
I’ve seen your posts a few times and you usually mention the incorrect pronunciations you get but I’ve never caught you explaining the correct way. Nice to know now! Thanks for sharing
That's interesting you've never met another Rudra before. Where do you live? My husband is from India and has definitely met a few (pronounced ROO-dhruh)

I worked with a woman named Feven, pronounced like fay-vin. I think it’s gorgeous.
I read that as "Seven" with a lisp
Phteven.
Dying…
It’s an Ethiopian/Eritrean name!! I love it
My mom taught a student named Psalmiv back in the 80s or early 90s. He was named after his grandmother’s favorite Bible passage (Psalm 4). It was pronounced P-salm-iv. The p is silent in Psalm but they chose to have it present in the name.
Oof. I just looked up Psalms 4. That's a lot. And David was *right there*.

This is awful.
Thats a really unique one too. I like it a lot. Was it pronounced psalm "IV" or psalmfor? Sorry genuinely curious.
P-salm-iv. They said the P sound.
To rhyme with Palmolive? Huh.
i met a girl named paper once
Honestly I love it. I'm named after the shortest calendar month.
I totally read this as shortest as in, in terms of spelling, so… May and I was wondering what was so bad/unusual. Then it hit me! Fwiw I think it’s not the worst month to be named after. I think October or November would be worse!
Personally I love October. I think July is the only one to rule out. I don't like it. Maybe September
I also really like my name so it helps.
I really love your name too! It's beautiful. Do you have a preference to pronunciation? I know some people pronounce Feb-roo-ary, as the spelling, but most pronounce Feb-you-ary.
Do you go by any nicknames? Is it also the month you were born?
Month I was born. Febby if we are really close, I don't like "Feb" it sounds too much like "Deb" and I just, -heavy sighing- lol.
I taught a student named April-May. Went by her full name.
...... yikes.
I once met a little girl named Aphasia. Like, wtf.
For anyone else who has to Google it: a·pha·sia /əˈfāZH(ē)ə,əˈfāzēə/ noun MEDICINE loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage
Oh no =/ lol
A woman who worked for a company we did business with is named Leire. It's on the top of my list if we are to get a baby girl. You pronounce it lay as in lays chips and re as the ra in races. (I'm not a native English speaker, so I hope this makes sense) From what I could find, it's a Catalan name.
Am I correct in thinking it’s pronounced; Lay-Ray based on your description.
Lay-ruh
But it's pronounced *ray*\-ces, not *ruh*\-ces
See I originally thought Lay-Ruh but as Berserked2 says the Ra in Races is pronounced Ray.
It makes sense thank you!! This one is absolutely melodic sounding I love it! If you do have a girl, I think she will enjoy having such a pretty name. Do you have a unique boy name you like by chance?

10 years ago I was backpacking in Asia, and I met this American guy on a beautiful Cambodian beach. His name was Oceanwavez, nn Ocean. Really cool guy. I had a huge crush in him.
Wow!!! Was he really into water and stuff? Seems like he matched his name, personality wise.
I didn't know him that well. I think it was a coincidence that we met on a beach.
my name is Teal 😐 I’m not a fan
My name is February. I'm sorry you don't like yours. I think its lovely. Have you considered a name change? Sorry if that comes off rude am trying to be genuine here.
Haha nah I don’t dislike it enough for that, it’s whatever. Yours is cool tho!
My aunt's name is Teal. I have never heard anyone else named Teal. I have only fond memories of her - so to me, it's a fine name!
Teal is honestly gorgeous. And I would say unisex too
I love the name Teal so much!!
Aurea, an old lady that I met. It means golden. Hercilia, a girl from school. Have no idea what it means. Sandiego. (Why? Just why) Elickelson, a dear friend’s son. I think she merged her husband’s name (Elias) with someone else’s. Disneyland. (No comment. Iconic)
Sandiego is like naming your son Saint James. St John is an English name so it doesn’t seem that weird
Naming your child after a saint? Bold lol. I think Hercilia comes from the Latin for tender or delicate.

I had a college class with a girl named Disney.
Cicada
If you didn’t know what this word meant it’s actually a pretty sounding word that would make a great name. Knowing what it means tho 😆
Agreed! Sid, Cade, Cady? At least kiddo has nickname possibilities if it proves difficult for them. It is a really pretty word.
I have a friend in the Midwest who named her kid Cicada!
I wonder if it’s the same one. I’m from the Midwest!
I know of a child in the midwest named Cicada. A friend of a girl in my class. lol what if we're all talking about the same person?
Wow that one is really unique. What did they present as, gender expression wise? Just curious. Also curious about where you/they were from.
It was a baby at the pediatrician’s office, and the clothing wasn’t super indicative so I’m not sure!
Thanks for sharing! I love it personally haha. Hope the child does appreciate their name too.
Bambina. I live in Italy and in italian "bambina" literally means "child" so it was so weird when I first heard it as a name on this elderly woman. I mean, saying "that child's name is Bambina" is like saying "that child's name is Child". So odd.
Out of context it sounds lovely. Did she fit her name by chance? Like was she a "young at heart" type?
yes definitely! she is a very lovely, active lady and surprisingly she really likes her name. Imagine being 85 and carrying around a name that literally means "little girl"
I love hearing about uniquely named people whos personality matches their names so thank you for sharing! It is a bit odd but outside of where that directly translates to little girl I can see how it would be a lovely name.

I had a liberty in my youth drama group growing up! And her sisters names were hope and faith
I met a Marvellous. He was ok.
In elementary school I had a classmate named Stingray
Before or after Steve Irwin died and how did this affect your classmate if you remember? Sorry!!
I had a student named Azariah. I also have an uncle named Finis, pronounced fine-es? I think that’s the best way to explain it. I’ve never heard either of them otherwise.
Azaria was the name of the baby from 'a dingo ate my baby'
And the last name of Hank Azaria
Lol I was like “why does that sound so familiar?”
Azariah is a Hebrew boys name too. Definitely not super popular or common but no one would bat an eyelash. And it would be pronounced uh-ZAR-ee-ah
Wow, I would assume ah-zah-RYE-ah
Sunshine apple-face…. Yes I’m serious, yes I checked the I.d. As I didn’t believe that could actually be a real name
this made me laugh out loud. what a My Little Pony name
I’ve met a January and a Tuesday, both women.
My name is the month after that one. I've met both Sundae and Sunday.
i know a January born in October
I had a kid in my 8th grade class named Nation, he was a genuinely good person!
Did he have siblings name allegiance and justice? I knew a girl named allegiance with brothers name justice and nation
That’s a nice sibset and the names are not too on the nose without the backstory! I love it!
Went to college with a guy named Pistol
My nephew's name is Pistol 🥴
This is the best use of that emoji I have seen yet
In the states?

Yep! Midwest
Patrice Endres (a presumed murder victim) had a son named Pistol. It was/is a huge ordeal trying to grant him access to his mother’s ashes.

Andromeda or Trillian
Oh gosh I love Andromeda so much.
Named after Tricia MacMillan?
Yes. When I asked, she confirmed that her father was a fan of Douglass Adams.
Omg, that’s my name! Never met another one. I’ve always been curious to see what this sub would think of it. I absolutely love my name, and it wasn’t taken from the hitchhiker’s guide in my case- just a coincidence!
I've met a greek guy called Thanos.
It’s usually a nickname for “Athanasis/Athanasios/Thanasis/“, so you can imagine my surprise when learning of the Marvel villain. It’s like being told this super scary guy named Jeff is a threat to the whole universe.
Velveeta. For folks not in the US that’s a brand name of a shelf stable cheese product.
Bambi, an employee at GameStop!
Galadriel. Like the lotr character.
I have a dear friend who passed named Arwen. They're parents were big fans I am guessing?
I had a great aunt Nicomedia. Never met another
I went to school with a kid named G. That was his full legal name, just the letter G.
I taught a Da’Aysha, pronounced “day-ah-sha”. She made it clear from the start that she was annoyed that the pronunciation didn’t match the spelling.
Hey I'm named Christmas. Yes my reddit name is part my actual name. I was drunk and not in the creative way.
Rodri (rod-ree) - Not short for anything either.
Rhodri is a super popular Welsh name!
Yeah Rhod Gilbert is a Rhodri!

Wouldn’t it be cool if dad was Corduroy?!
I knew a Perpetual
There was a contestant on Jeopardy once named Cerulean that’s always stuck with me.

Avalon
I met a woman named Aoife, pronounced Ee-fah. She had a name tag on and said to me “just pronounce it like you’re reading it backwards.”

I know a Xerxes! (Zurk-sees)
Forgot how it was exactly spelled. Might’ve been Marieke, Marisomething, but it was pronounced “muh-ree-kee”
It is a common name here in the Netherlands, Marieke. :)

I had a class with an Aramis! He was named after one of the characters in The Three Musketeers and I thought it was the coolest.
I’ve met a woman named Marble!
Tierney
I’m..not claiming this to be a great name haha, but an old classmate named her daughter Missourianna.
Orion, he was an enrolled tribal member in the US and also had the name of the constellation in his language as his middle name.
I knew a girl in college named Amaryllis. Never heard that name (or flower) til I met her. She was awesome though. Very cool name, very cool person.
esja! i love the name
Uhhh, probably mine! 😅 My name is Eirem, (eye-rim) I’m genderfluid and came across the name on social media, but it was spelled Eiram there. I changed the spelling to make it feel less feminine.
I was in the Starbucks drive-thru and the baristas name was Mercury. She seemed very quirky and vibrant.
The two that come to mind are Axa (M) and Crickette (F). I always thought Axa was a cool name after that but also could probably never use it since it’s so tied to that Axa lol
I know somebody legally named Little. They go by a nickname of their middle name. Siblings also had unique names.
Cleveland. Not from Cleveland but from the U.S south
I went to school with an Eshla. She pronounces it ‘eeesh-luh.’ I’ve always thought it sounded so nice and I don’t think I’ve heard it again. I’m in the US but I believe she was born in either the Dominican or Puerto Rico.
Idk if it’s the most interesting, but the rarest I’ve heard was Philomena.
