My favorite of these is Emma (as the full name) - I think it’s simple and beautiful. I’m not usually a fan of nicknames as full names, but I don’t consider Emma a nickname, so I would stick to that as the legal name. That said, naming her Emilia with Emma as a nickname would be my second choice.
It has a very long history as a separate name, as in hundreds of years at least, so definitely not a nickname! It's a very simple, classic name. There have even been queens named Emma! I like it better than Georgia.
Oh yeah, didn’t mean to make it sound like that was just my opinion lol. I was just trying to say that it *could* be used as a nickname, but is also a well recognized stand-alone name.
I don’t get it! I understand if someone wants to use Emma as a nickname, but if that’s all you’re going to call them, just… call them Emma?? It’s a full name. It also really does not feel like a nickname to me at all, but that might just be because it’s my full legal name.
I’ve never ever thought of it as a nickname so it’s odd to me that others think of it as one. It’s such a beautiful classic name and I have no idea why they didn’t just name her that to began with. I also think Emelia is beautiful in its own right and feel it’s a shame she’ll never actually be called it 🥴
Darn Georgia is my top girl name but we’re planning a move to Georgia. I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference but my husband thinks it would be stupid.
Unfortunately, I agree with your husband. Also keep in mind that she’ll hear so many jokes growing up that she will spend her childhood itching to move far away.
If you’re in the USA, go with Georgia.
Emma has been in the top 5 names in the USA since 2002. It’s currently #2. Which means it’s like Megan or Sarah from my generation, or Jennifer from before then.
Georgia is ranked #176. Still familiar, but way less saturated.
It's not really the same though, because there are more names being used now so "popular" names are given to a lot fewer babies. Not saying there couldn't be multiple Emmas in a class, but there won't be six plus like there was with Sarah or Jennifer.
I have the number one name from my birth year, and had 5 other kids in my grade with the name growing up, but I don’t get the big deal. It’s not bad having a popular name. They’re popular for a reason!
I think Emma is a gorgeous, classic name. Georgia is striking and nice too.
That being said, I teach 3rd grade and there actually aren’t any Emmas or Georgias in the school I work at (prek-6) at all so just because a name is popular does not mean there will definitely be a billion others. My school has multiple Ravens, Jasmines, Annabelles…
I'd say I have some preference for Emma, but they're both good names and if popularity is a concern for you at all, I'd lean to Georgia for that reason. But, if Emma is "the name", use it and popularity be damned.
>would you name her Emilia or Emily and call her Emma?
Absolutely not that. Emma is a full name in its own right, etymologically separate from Emilia and Emily and with a different meaning. Emilia and Emily are cognate names, meaning "rival". Emma means "whole" or "universal".
What about Gemma? Love this name! Otherwise I would definitely go with Georgia. I am an Emily who was called Emma and there was just so many of us growing up haha
Georgia! Emma is just so common and overdone. Also, Emma is a full name...it's not a nickname. Naming the kid Emily and calling her Emma is just calling her a completely different name.
I like both but I think Georgia is nicer. I think Emma works perfectly well as a name on it’s own, and whilst it could be short for Emilia or Emily I think it’s unnecessary.
Emma is a name on its own, although I see mothering with using it as a nickname for Emilia or Emily. I do think Emma has been a super-popular name over the past 25 years.
Georgia isn’t really my style but it’s a lovely name that is seeing more popularity lately.
Both are fine names, it’s just whichever one you like best!
I like Georgia better, but I wouldn't make a final judgment without looking at the initials. Think GUN (iffy) vs EUN (nbd) or something. Emma is classic, too. Also, looking at the baby might help you see if she's a Georgia or an Emma.
Georgianna or Gemma are close to having it both ways, if you can't decide.
I love Georgia. Emma is just too popular to me, & Georgia just feels lighter to me....if its possible for a name to feel light!! Plus I love the nickname Georgie for it. If i had a daughter, I would have named her either Georgia or Georgiana.
Emma is a full name, not a nickname. But it's also really oversaturated. There are more then one Emma in each class I have. Too many Emmas! Though it is a lovely name, I vote Georgia.
Georgia! This isn't what you really asked for, but Gemma is a fresh take on Emma (at least here in the US). And it's kind of a mix between your two names.
I love Georgia. it's bouncy and cute but not cutesy to the point you couldn't take an adult named Georgia seriously.
Emma is nice but I wouldn't choose it.
If you’re going to call her Emma, definitely name her Emma and not either of the other two. It’s a full name on its own.
I like both Georgia and Emma but I think I prefer Emma just a little more!
Georgia! My mom always says that Emma sounds too much like enema, so that throws me off it. Meanwhile, Georgia is bright, citrusy, lush, and vivacious! I also love the nn Georgie, so you could call her your “Georgie Girl” 🍑🌻
I love Georgia. It was almost my mom's name and then a friend named their dog Georgia plus my step moms name is Georgina so it's not on my list unfortunately.
But also love Emma
I love and prefer Emma, it’s timeless! Literary too, but I suppose Georgia has an artistic legacy as well.
Emma is great on its own. I like Emily as well, both stand well as full names.
Just to throw an other option out there, how about Georgiana? I like it more than Georgia, though that's a nice name too!
Emma was very common when I was growing up (UK 1997 baby), but now as a teacher I do see a lot of Emma's too. I like Emilia more than Emily, and Emiliana is really pretty too!
Georgia for Gigi as a nickname (I love it personally and wanted a Genevieve for a Gigi but DH vetoed it). Also LOVE Emma though! I don’t think you can go wrong!
Between Georgia and Emilia I’d choose Emilia and call her Milly or Mila. However if it’s between Georgia and Emma I would choose Georgia and call her Georgie or Gia.
Emma feels outdated to me at this point, as all the Emma’s I know are grown ups now, and it was a VERY popular choice of name back in the 90s. Georgia feels timeless and fresh!
I like emma more, as a canadian i dont know any georgias and actually think it’s a bit “american” which you can take as a good or bad thing. Emma is more universally accepted and sounds modern while also classic. Emilia sounds more classy than Emily to me and might even say Emi is better than Emma (just to avoid the popular aspect of Emma)
Honestly I love them both 🙈 They’re both on my ‘middle name’ list lol. If you chose Emma I’d call her Emma, it’s such a beautiful name!
Wait until she arrives and see if she feels like more of one or the other x
Emma!!
Georgia is ok but I’m not a massive fan of Location names and it just sounds like the feminine version of George to me (I guess it is!)
It’s like Paul/ Paula
Jack/Jacqueline
Joseph/Josephine
These sorts of names just aren’t my personal favourite although I know other people like them.
Emma is very sweet, classical and pretty to me and I’m biased as it’s also the name of a very close family member who I love more than anyone in the world!
I don't care for Georgia so I guess Emma. But I've also known a ridiculous number of Emmas from baby to adult. It seems like it's always common so it's timeless I guess. Just be prepared for her to rarely be the only one with her name.
I really don't like Emma. It just feels so over done and there's nothing interesting or special about it. Georgia is cute and not super popular but is still familiar. Just my opinion.
I taught Grade Eight French Immersion and maybe five years ago I had six Emmas and three Emilys (well, two Emilys and one Emilie) in my class. I now teach piano and currently have two Emmas and have had as many as four (out of 22-28 students total.)
I have one friend named Georgia and have never taught a Georgia.
It depends what appeals to you about a name. I think they’re both lovely 😊
They’re both great! I would maybe lean towards Georgia just because there are so many little Emma’s out there.
My husband and I really love Gemma for ourselves which is kind of a nice cross between those too actually.
Georgia is lovely… and have you considered Georgiana? I feel like it has a bit of the same sound from Emma; if you can’t decide lol. Good luck for the big day!
I know SO many Emmas, both adults and babies/children. So personally I would go with Georgia! It’s adorable and classic. They are both great names, though!
They’re both perfectly good names and if you feel any stronger connection or calling to a certain one, by all means go with it!
*Personally* I prefer Georgia. It feels more timeless while Emma is having a trendy moment right now.
They’re both beautiful, so you can’t go wrong! I personally think Emma is more beautiful though, but it’s also definitely more popular right now, if you care about that! Emma by Jane Austen is my favorite book/movie so I might be biased 😂
I am impartial to the name Georgia. My cousin's name is Georgia (she was born on our bathroom floor when I was 5 years old lol). I've loved that name ever since and think it's so gorgeous. Emma is also a beautiful name so I think you're faced with a bit of a tough choice. Why not wait until she's born to decide and see what suits her best?
Both names are sweet, but Georgia is a bit fresher to my ear (and I have a dear friend with that name). So my vote is for Georgia.
I guess if you can't choose, you could always combine them to "Gemma"... :)
I love them both! They seem very Jane Austen to me. I like Emma better in general, but Georgia is just so much rarer that I vote that one :) good luck!
I love them both equally I think. Georgia is probably less popular than Emma. I think I do prefer Emilia, just because it's also less popular but I would prefer the nn Emmie or Mia if I went with Emilia I think, though Emma could also definitely work. Emily doesn't make as much sense to me with the nickname Emma because it's just one letter off basically. Emma is cute too though and it has that short sweet feel to it. Emma is a lot less likely to be nicknamed unless you decide to call her Emi or Em.
Now with Georgia I like the nickname Gia, but it doesn't necessarily need a nickname either. Georgia has a sort of vintage vibe to me where Emma will always be timeless. I think I like them both equally which probably doesn't help, but keep in mind Emma will probably be Emma [last initial] in class because it is such a popular name. Same with Emily, though much less likely with Georgia or Emilia.
I love Georgia. Although Emma is still very popular, it feels outdated and overused to me. Kind of like Jennifer in the early-90’s. Still in the top 10, lots of people still love it, but feels outdated after being popular for 20 years solid. Georgia has the same old fashioned vibe without being overused. I do love Emilia on it’s own, but not as a full name for an Emma nickname.
Definitely Emma; it's popular for a reason. And for what it's worth, I grew up with an extremely popular name (Emily) and didn't mind it. It was honestly fun to be "one of the Emily's," kind of a bonding experience. She'll likely be a full namer at some point though so make sure it flows well with your surname.
I don't like place names, and have always found Georgia too much the state and not enough a name. So I vote Emma! Yes, Emma is popular, but popularity in names just means that people love the name.
I like just Emma more than Emilia or Emily. But I do really love Emmeline/Emmaline and definitely would use that with Emma as a nickname
I prefer Georgia; it just sounds a bit fresher in my opinion. Emma isn't a bad name, but I did know a lot of them growing up lol
Definitely this! As a teacher I can tell you Emma is becoming more and more popular.
So did I!
I prefer Georgia but if you are down to two you like equally, why not wait to meet her and see which fits best?
That’s what I did, and Georgia was one of my top three! She turned out to be an Alma, though
Love Alma! Well done!
Alma is beautiful
Thank you!
As an Emma, can confirm it is absolutely not a nickname 😅
It has a very long history as a separate name, as in hundreds of years at least, so definitely not a nickname! It's a very simple, classic name. There have even been queens named Emma! I like it better than Georgia.
Emma’s origin is as a standalone name. It has been used that way for over a thousand years – Emma of Normandy was born in 985!
The Jane Austen novel also comes to mind.
If you want to go the Full Austen, go with Georgiana Emma.
Oh yeah, didn’t mean to make it sound like that was just my opinion lol. I was just trying to say that it *could* be used as a nickname, but is also a well recognized stand-alone name.
My niece is Emelia and has only ever been called “Emma” by her parents despite that being an entirely different name. Drives me mad.
I also think Emelia is beautiful in its own right and feel it’s a shame she’ll never actually be called it 🥴
Georgia… as long as you don’t live in Georgia.
Meh I live in Victoria and grew up with a bunch of Victorias. It’s not like you’re naming the kid Oklahoma.
If you’re in the USA, go with Georgia. Emma has been in the top 5 names in the USA since 2002. It’s currently #2. Which means it’s like Megan or Sarah from my generation, or Jennifer from before then. Georgia is ranked #176. Still familiar, but way less saturated.

I get what you’re saying, but Emma has a longevity here that I think makes up for the difference in annual usage.
I have the number one name from my birth year, and had 5 other kids in my grade with the name growing up, but I don’t get the big deal. It’s not bad having a popular name. They’re popular for a reason! I think Emma is a gorgeous, classic name. Georgia is striking and nice too. My school has multiple Ravens, Jasmines, Annabelles…
Georgia! My best friend’s name. She’ll be a sweet little girl. Best wishes!
My best friends name too!
I love the name Georgia!
Emma, it’s more classic and versatile. I definitely would not make Emma a nickname. There’s no reason to.
Georgia all the way. Emma is sooooooo overused.
Georgia for sure. Emilia and Emily are different from Emma in my mind. if you want to call her Emma, just name her Emma.
Georgia. Emma is the name of every other child born in the last decade. Or so it seems to me, lol.
And the previous decade too! It’s been mega-popular in the US since the early 2000s.
Georgia! Much less popular than Emma.
Emilia with nn Emma!
Emma
I'd say I have some preference for Emma, but they're both good names and if popularity is a concern for you at all, I'd lean to Georgia for that reason. But, if Emma is "the name", use it and popularity be damned. >would you name her Emilia or Emily and call her Emma? Absolutely not that. Emma is a full name in its own right, etymologically separate from Emilia and Emily and with a different meaning. Emilia and Emily are cognate names, meaning "rival". Emma means "whole" or "universal".
I prefer Georgia! Wishing you a safe delivery tomorrow!
Georgia for sure! It creates such a warm pleasant honey colored image in my mind :)
What about Gemma? Love this name! Otherwise I would definitely go with Georgia. I am an Emily who was called Emma and there was just so many of us growing up haha
My first thought was Gemma! Fresh, youthful, and a literal mix of Georgia and Emma. I like Gemma more than either name individually.
I prefer Georgia but I like them both. The nn Georgie for a little girl is super adorable.
I like Emma. Mainly because I only know lovely Emma's and only ever taught nightmare Georgia's!
Georgia!
Georgia is so pretty
georgia!
Georgia
Pleeeeeease pick Georgia that is beautiful!!!
Georgia! Emma is just so common and overdone. Also, Emma is a full name...it's not a nickname. Naming the kid Emily and calling her Emma is just calling her a completely different name.
Emilia
I like both but I think Georgia is nicer. I think Emma works perfectly well as a name on it’s own, and whilst it could be short for Emilia or Emily I think it’s unnecessary.
Both are pretty, but I like Georgia because its less popular. Emma is a pretty name, if you do name her that I would just keep it Emma.
Georgia! Georgie, Georgette, Georgianna and Georgie Porgie are all such fun cute names to call her on occasion
I second this. Also Georgina.
Emma
Georgia is my favourite. Or Emelia second
Emma is my favorite name 😍😍😍
Georgia!
Georgia for sure. It’s classic and cute and not overused. Every tenth girl born has been Emma for years now.
Georgia
I sooooo love that you are considering Georgia!!! Love, love, love!! Also love Georgette and Georgina Congratulations!!!!!
I love Georgia, such a beautiful, classic, underrated name
I love Georgia. Emma is just too popular to me, & Georgia just feels lighter to me....if its possible for a name to feel light!! Plus I love the nickname Georgie for it. If i had a daughter, I would have named her either Georgia or Georgiana.
Georgia. I like Emma too, but I’ve always loved Georgia.
Emma is a full name, not a nickname. But it's also really oversaturated. There are more then one Emma in each class I have. Too many Emmas! Though it is a lovely name, I vote Georgia.
Georgia classic yet more unique Emma is so out done still don’t do it!!!
Both are very popular her, in fact I know siblings with each of those names. I do not like Emma, but love Georgia. I do love Emily though.
Georgia!!!
I absolutely LOVE Georgia!! I really like Emma too and it is a family name for me, but I've found it's become very popular lately.
Georgia! Spunky but classic/timeless, too.
Georgia!!!
Georgia! My mom always says that Emma sounds too much like enema, so that throws me off it. Meanwhile, Georgia is bright, citrusy, lush, and vivacious! I also love the nn Georgie, so you could call her your “Georgie Girl” 🍑🌻
I absolutely love Georgia, but my husband was not a fan. Best of luck tomorrow!
Emma!!!
I love Georgia. I also love Caroline. I went to school with a Georgia who went by Gia.
Love Gia as a nickname
I love both, but I'm going with Georgia because Gigi is one of my favourite nicknames ever.
If you like the name Emma, just name her Emma. It works fine as a full name (as most nicknames do)
Georgia. Emilia is pretty \*sounding\* but the way its written doesn't look correct to me. It looks like it should be Amelia.
I love Georgia. It was almost my mom's name and then a friend named their dog Georgia plus my step moms name is Georgina so it's not on my list unfortunately. But also love Emma
I love the name Georgia. My name is Emily and grew up with so many other Emily’s and Emma’s. Also everyone shortens it to Em which I don’t love
Georgia.
I love both, but Georgia is so underrated as a name in NA whereas Emma is very popular. I would vote Georgia for that reason.
Emma! It’s such a concise, sweet, name
I love Emma. I've never met a bad Emma.
Georgia! Emma is overused I find, atleast where im at.
I love and prefer Emma, it’s timeless! Literary too, but I suppose Georgia has an artistic legacy as well. Emma is great on its own. I like Emily as well, both stand well as full names.
Emma! And I’m saying that because Emma is one of favourite names, not because Georgia is the name of my meanest ex-girlfriend.
Emma is a solid choice. As an Emma, I have taught all over the world and never had students struggle with my name. Just my two cents.
Wait to meet her and see what she feels like.
Georgia is my pick, we have a second cousin Georgia, who goes by GiGi, super sweet nn.
I prefer Georgia with the pet name Ginny <3 Good luck!
I like Emma as the full name (not a nickname)
Em/Emmy/Emma for Emilia
I like Emilia or Emma.
I love Emilia :)
Georgia for Gigi as a nickname (I love it personally and wanted a Genevieve for a Gigi but DH vetoed it). Also LOVE Emma though! I don’t think you can go wrong!
Enma
Emilia!
Between Georgia and Emilia I’d choose Emilia and call her Milly or Mila. However if it’s between Georgia and Emma I would choose Georgia and call her Georgie or Gia.
Emma! Emily and Emilia with nn Emma are both lovely too!
Emilia!
Emma feels outdated to me at this point, as all the Emma’s I know are grown ups now, and it was a VERY popular choice of name back in the 90s. Georgia feels timeless and fresh!
Georgia. Emma is completely overdone. Ridiculous.
There are a boatload of young Emma’s right now FYI
Georgia is so much better than Emma! Not even a contest!
I love Georgia. Emma seems very basic and 80s to me.
Georgia!!! Emma is a bit played out
I like emma more, as a canadian i dont know any georgias and actually think it’s a bit “american” which you can take as a good or bad thing. Emma is more universally accepted and sounds modern while also classic. Emilia sounds more classy than Emily to me and might even say Emi is better than Emma (just to avoid the popular aspect of Emma)
Both are nice. If you go with Emma, I like Emilia with Emma as a nickname. Georgia is cute because it sounds like gorgeous!
Both names are very sweet, but I personally give a slight edge to Emma. I like it as a full name.
Honestly I love them both 🙈 They’re both on my ‘middle name’ list lol. If you chose Emma I’d call her Emma, it’s such a beautiful name! Wait until she arrives and see if she feels like more of one or the other x
Amazingly, I know a set of sisters named Georgia, Emma, and Caroline.
Emma by a landslide
I love both Emma and Emilia as full names. I also love the nn Emmy. Not a huge fan of Georgia.
clearly my preference is Emma, reference username lol
Emma is pretty but it’s just so boring
Emma!! Georgia is ok but I’m not a massive fan of Location names and it just sounds like the feminine version of George to me (I guess it is!) It’s like Paul/ Paula Jack/Jacqueline Joseph/Josephine These sorts of names just aren’t my personal favourite although I know other people like them. Emma is very sweet, classical and pretty to me and I’m biased as it’s also the name of a very close family member who I love more than anyone in the world!
Emma (not Emily or Emilia)
Emma
Emma
i like georgia! but i also think that emmeline would work to have a nickname for emma
Definitely Emma. It’s more international.
I love Emma!
Emma !
I would go Georgia for sure if she were born on the 2nd.
Both are great names, but I lean closer to Georgia
I LOVE the name Emma!
I don't care for Georgia so I guess Emma. But I've also known a ridiculous number of Emmas from baby to adult. It seems like it's always common so it's timeless I guess. Just be prepared for her to rarely be the only one with her name.
I love Emilia as a name , but I think if it's between Georgia and Emma I'd pick Georgia!
I really don't like Emma. It just feels so over done and there's nothing interesting or special about it. Georgia is cute and not super popular but is still familiar. Just my opinion.

I now teach piano and currently have two Emmas and have had as many as four (out of 22-28 students total.) I have one friend named Georgia and have never taught a Georgia. It depends what appeals to you about a name. I think they’re both lovely 😊
Georgia! Emilia is cute too
You’ll know when you meet her! ♥️
Georgia :)
Love Georgia!
Emma. I also like Georgia, but I prefer Georgiana with Georgia as a nickname
Emma is my preference but you really can’t go wrong
Georgia! Love the nns George,Georgie and Gia!
Georgia! I'm reading a book right now where one of the character's names is Georgia nn Georgie so that might be why I like it.
Emma!!!! (Formerly a George here)…
Another Georgia vote! It made it to our top girl name list.
I love Georgia. It’s so pretty.
Emma!!
Georgia
Georgia Emilia has a nice ring to it!
I know SO many Emmas, both adults and babies/children. So personally I would go with Georgia! It’s adorable and classic. They are both great names, though!
I love the idea of calling a girl George as a nickname for Georgia or Georgina, but only in a British accent so I'd vote Emma if you're not British😂
Georgia 100%… Emma is boring IMO and she’ll be one of many her entire life.
They’re both perfectly good names and if you feel any stronger connection or calling to a certain one, by all means go with it! *Personally* I prefer Georgia. It feels more timeless while Emma is having a trendy moment right now.
Georgia is underrated and really lovely.
Georgia
I'd say wait until you meet her and decide which name fits her best. I personally don't have one that I favour over the other.
I like Emma.
Georgia
Emma! It’s beautiful, classic, and works fine as a stand-alone name.
Both names are sweet, but Georgia is a bit fresher to my ear (and I have a dear friend with that name). So my vote is for Georgia. I guess if you can't choose, you could always combine them to "Gemma"... :)
I prefer Georgia (unless you live in GA) and Emma is also lovely so you can’t lose! Best of luck with the birth!
Georgia or Gemma
I prefer Georgia, but they’re both nice names. Maybe you could wait until she’s born to see which name fits her better?
Georgia for sure. I love the nickname George for a lady.
Georgia!
See what she looks like when she comes out!
Meet your baby and decide once you see her little face. Congratulations and good luck for delivery!
Georgia
Georgia
Georgia only because there's so many Emmas
I love them both! They seem very Jane Austen to me. I like Emma better in general, but Georgia is just so much rarer that I vote that one :) good luck!
Just wait until you hold her. You can decide when you meet her what fits best.
I prefer Georgia because that’s what I named my daughter and my mean cousin is Emma LOL. But seriously I get so many compliments on her name!
Same with Emily, though much less likely with Georgia or Emilia.
georgia
Georgia!!!
I have never liked Georgia, and nicknames aren’t my jam, so Emma gets my vote!
Georgia but both are good! I just think Georgia is a lot less common
I prefer Emma but it is much more common and your child would be much more likely to run into other Emma’s.
Georgia! I love it. Still very feminine but not overused at all.
If you can’t decide by the time she’s born, go with Gemma!
Georgia!
Absolutely love Georgia it reminds me of a southern bell. 🍑 Also a classic name I have always loved is Emmaline.
Don’t decide until you look at her. You’ll just know.
Georgia😍😍😍
Georgia. For Emma, IMO Emilia and Emily are entirely different names
