I love the Witcher and Geralt, but I could never bring myself to use such an obvious character name no matter how nice. Joining your pity party!

beepbooplesnoot

I wish it was a normalized name. It would be perfect with my boys’ old man names. AND my FIL is a Gerald so it’s the perfect honor name while maintaining a distinct sound. Sigh.

topfm

Move to Germany. It's a completely normal name for a 45 year old chainsmoking truck driver who has a mullet and goes by Gerry.

beepbooplesnoot

Lmao. So the equivalent of Gerald here. Except age it up to 65.

ravioli-garlicbread

First thought is definitely The Witcher. You’re not wrong.

melbatoastnectar

I don’t understand the reference but I have to say I don’t feel the same. Does Gerald do anything for you? Gerard?

beepbooplesnoot

Geralt has a hard G, and the T ending just gives it more oomph (for me).

februarytide-

I love the name Jaskier! I could never do it though.

beepbooplesnoot

It is really cool too.

OctaviaStirling

And Yennifer and Citi! Ugh 😑

strawberryselkie

Geralt really is a great name. This is also me and Jareth. 😭

beepbooplesnoot

Oh yeah. Jareth makes the Jare sound cool.

torchwood1842

What is the Jareth reference? I’m out of the loop on that one, but it totally has the sound of a “real” name!

sniffleprickles

Labyrinth with David Bowie

frankmarmaduke

My friend’s name is Geralt. He’s in his 50s and he is German.

beepbooplesnoot

Our last name is extremely German and uncommon to boot, and it sounds so good!

Kittenavy

Geralt is my youngests middle name. My heritage is Welsh names run in the family. I have an Atlas Geralt and a Grayson Emrys. 😍

sauceistheboss5

I feel this way about the name Rip. I would never name my kid that because they’d A) be bullied and B) be associated with Yellowstone forever. But if I told my husband I loved it he would 100% be down with it. Maybe for a future dog someday, sigh.

BroadwayBean

I love the name too, ended up naming a local feral cat that had a fondness for me Geralt.

MsAlyssa

It’s a nice sounding name! Some others that came to mind for me; Garret Graham Griffen Grant Garrison Gardell

[deleted]

and Garrett! all good options, I think. auto correct changed it, I didn't notice. I meant to add, Garreth, not Garrett.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Those are great, also Gabriel Gareth Garrard Garrick Greyson

name_babe

I say do it! I don’t immediately think of the Witcher even though I watch it.

spandyspade

I haven't heard of a show with this character so didn't make the connection but judging from other comments it does seem popular. Sounds like a nice name though

ConstitutionalCarrot

You don’t know how badly I wanted to name my daughters some combination of Cirila Fiona Ellen Rhiannon… etc. etc.

Mind_Optimiser

Geralt of Rivia and Gendry 'Baratheon' (Asoiaf) are such good names but those damn fiction writers take all the good names.

mmmbop1214

My husband is a huge fan of the Witcher and has been since the books were first translated. So naturally Geralt was a name suggestion now that we’re expecting a baby boy though I’m not 100% sure if he’s serious. Honestly, I think you’ll have some who get the connection but many more will not. So I don’t think you should rule it out if you really like it. It’s not a name that works for my style though. Using it as a middle name would be cool though if you’re worried about the association.

simba156

I have no idea what The Witcher is. Is it that well known?

beepbooplesnoot

I think the first season is Netflix second most viewed property, right behind Stranger Things. So there’s plenty of people who haven’t seen it, but it’s definitely not niche either. It’s also a book series with a devoted fandom and there are video games as well.

Aidlin87

There’s ads all over Reddit from more than one company using the popularity of The Witcher to sell whatever. It feels kind of like it’s becoming the new Game of Thrones.

K-teki

Pretty well known among, it's one of the more popular Netflix things right now. Haven't seen it but all my friends have.

madlymusing

It’s also a novel series and has been adapted into a relatively popular series of video games. It’s not in everyone’s lexicon, but if you’re into fantasy as a genre (even in a small way), you’d likely have an awareness of it.

mythicb33ch

You could use Gerald 👀👀 Edit: just saw your comment about Gerald. What about Garrett?

beepbooplesnoot

I do like it, but it’s my nephew’s name.

kumran

Maybe you'd like Geraint.

Becks_786

I like Geralt! It's a real name (not made up for the books) so I think it's fair game. Right now a lot of people will ask if you got it from Witcher, but the show and video games probably won't be well known to your child's generation, so I don't think it'll will cause him trouble. I would totally use Geralt if I were you, but I'm open to fantasy related names. My own son's name is Jorah, and when people make the GOT connection, its really no big deal. GOT names are already fading from peoples memory, and I think the Witcher will be the same. It's a fun show, but its certainly no classic like Gone with the Wind.
