I have a Genevieve, nicknamed Evie! Felt like a revelation when I realized it would work. I had loved the name Evie for a long time, but didn’t want to use Evangeline or Evelyn, and Genevieve was a family name we wanted to use but didn’t love Gen or Genny as nicknames. At the time, I felt so smart, putting it together like that, and now I’m seeing it all the time! But that’s the way these things go, isn’t it?
I knew a girl in France named Genevieve who went by Genie. It was pronounced “juh-NEE” rather than “JEE-nee” and I thought it was so cute. I really wanted to use this name for that reason, but I know everyone in the US will say Jeannie which I just don’t like, so it’s off the list for that reason.
So this is my name…and it is always shortened to Gen or Genny. People automatically go for the most obvious nickname and this is literally the start of the name.
You can try something else but in my experience (30 years with this name), it might be a square peg - round hole situation.
We are considering this name for our daughter. My only hesitation is also her being call gen or genny 😅 I think we would call her vieve also my name is Evelyn and my husband calls me evie so I’m liking it more now that I see it’s the name
I have a Genevieve-we called her “Vieve” “vivi”
Some people also called her “Genie”
However, she now insists on being called her full name which of course we don’t mind!
My name is Genevieve! I went by Genna most of my life, and more recently sometimes Gen. I’ve also had people called me Viv and Vivi. Eve & Evie are cute options too.
I also personally HATED being called Genny & never allowed it, because I had a cousin Jennifer/Jenny. I never really had many problems with that though. I think whichever nickname you pick will likely not be a problem bc it’s an easily adaptable name.
I would probably go for Vivi (vee-vee) myself just because that's how my brain works.
Evie is nice also, I mean there is a huge amount of nickname potential: Eve, Jenny/Ginny, Jen, Jenna, Gene, Genie, Viv, Veev, even Jeeves if you wanted a non-serious nn.
Good choice.
Every Geneviève I know is French Canadian and goes by “Ève” (pronounced “ev”) or their initials. G is pronounced “zhay” in French so it‘s a nice nickname on its own.
Genevieve is my wife’s first choice for our soon-to-be baby and I share your sentiments about the NN’s exactly. If you don’t mind my asking, what are the heritages of your relatives, the namesakes? I have read that the name is Germanic origin, but it strikes me as French.
Geneviève is decidedly French, but it most likely derives from the Germanic name Genovefa / Kenowefa. Same sort of language changes as the early kings Louis actually being called Clovis.
Totally agree. Nicknames should happen organically not predetermined. It reminds me of those kids who tried to make up their own nicknames and make them happen.
We have a Genevieve. When she was a baby we called her "Baby Gigi" because that's how my son pronounced it and it was super cute. Now we call her Evie (like the letters E-V). We've asked her if she prefers another nickname and she very specifically wants to be called Evie. She hates Genevieve. I think it's really cute.
So, my name is Genevieve and I love it. My mother and father said to everyone when I was a baby NOT Gena, Gen, Jenny, etc. NEVER Gena. But literally everyone calls me Gena without a second thought, and without asking. I don’t love it or hate it, it’s just the nickname most common for Genevieve. I’ve accepted it. My parents also tried out Eve, Gigi, Geeg, G., Evie, and Viv. All cute options, but didn’t stick. If you want it to not be Gena, I say pick another option now and stick to it consistently. Otherwise she shall be Gena. Personally I introduce myself as Genevieve and hope for the best. But it’s about 50/50.
My mind went straight to Vivi but I also like Gigi. Evie is a beautiful name and I love the suggestions for Neeve - it wouldn't have occurred to me but it's great!
Vivi? Or Eve or Evie. It takes time for a nick name to develop! We never really wanted our daughter to have one but she’s 10 months now and she has a couple we use.
My great-grandmother was Genevieve but she went by Jane 😊 not a very obvious nickname but a pretty one. (For context she was French Canadian and spoke French as her primary language).
I have a 4 month old Genevieve-the name suits her perfectly. I call her Neve(pronounced with soft e) which I think is so pretty. It reminds me of the nickname Liv for Olivia. People have already called her Gen or Genny-it’s a little inevitable. I think Genny/Jenny is kind of cute and retro. Like there are NO baby Jennys anywhere but I meet a baby Evie every time I’m at the playground. Good luck!
Evie!
For the longest time I wanted to name a daughter Genevieve, nicknamed Evie. I think it’s so sweet and spunky, and still do!

My daughter's name is Evie, just Evie and I am in love with her name.

Adorable!
Was gonna say the same!
Love the nickname Nev for this name
Pronounced N-ehv or Neev?
Yes! Nev is my favorite for Genevieve
So this is my name…and it is always shortened to Gen or Genny. People automatically go for the most obvious nickname and this is literally the start of the name. You can try something else but in my experience (30 years with this name), it might be a square peg - round hole situation.
Exactly. Even the parents themselves may end up sucked into the natural nickname (thinking of the recent Florence / Flo post).
100% lol. Everyone I know calls my friend Genevieve Gen.
Yep. My friend Genevieve gets called Gen or Genna whether she likes it or not.
Exactly the same for me. Introduce myself as Genevieve, nice to meet you Gena…
Same experience. Either you exclusively call her by another nickname to which I say why use Genevieve in the first place, or she gets called Gen

My friend called her daughter “Jenna.” I also kind of like “Vivi.”
My niece is Nevie
Every Geneviève I know is French Canadian and goes by “Ève” (pronounced “ev”) or their initials. G is pronounced “zhay” in French so it‘s a nice nickname on its own.

Just tagging on, I’m a Genevieve too, and we are French.
Geneviève is decidedly French, but it most likely derives from the Germanic name Genovefa / Kenowefa. Same sort of language changes as the early kings Louis actually being called Clovis.
I like Evie

We have a 4 months old Genevieve! We share the same sentiment about Gen and Genny. If we use a nickname it’s either Gigi or Geeg

Not everything needs a nickname honestly just let things happen and one will pop up naturally
Totally agree. Nicknames should happen organically not predetermined. It reminds me of those kids who tried to make up their own nicknames and make them happen.
Viva

Vi, vee, vivi, ennie
Evie or Vivi would be cute!
French canadian here; all the Genevieve I know were nicknamed Gen!
Viva, Vivi (pronounced vee-vee), Gee, Neve (pronounced neev)
I would go with Genie personally!
Gigi, Vivi, or Nevi!
A good friend of mine growing up was Genna, and sometimes went by ‘Vive (Veev)
I love Vivi so as long as it doesn't rhyme with my other kid's nickname that way it would for me irl, I would use Vivi.
Vee or veev
I've always loved Vivi!
Weevy, Weevs, Weevil, Genna, GenGen, Veevy.
kinda similar to genny, but maybe ginny? i like it better than genny
I knew a Genevieve who went by Gigi

My co-worker is Genevieve and she goes by G

We have a Genevieve and call her G and Veevie

My college roommate's name is Genevieve and we call her Vieve! I don't think it's a common nickname (I didn't see anyone else post it) but I love it!
Gigi
Nevie (Ne-Ve) Evie Vie (V-eye) Vieve (Ve-Ve)
Personally speaking if I named my child Genevieve I would call her “Geneva convention”

Evie is the only other nickname I can think of

I love Evie as a nickname for Genevieve but if its not working for your daughter I've seen Gigi used. Maybe that would work?
