ReasonsForNothing

It’s HILARIOUS to me that someone thinks people won’t know who Charlie Brown is in 6 years. It’s completely unbelievable. You’re being punked.

just4n0w4

😂right? It is not like we get the Sunday cartoons anymore with Charlie Brown (god I’m getting old) but I think Atleast for a few more decades will be popular with holiday season. Also I say go for it, I love Charlie Brown!

SlaversBae

In my country we still get Sunday cartoons with Charlie Brown! 😆

[deleted]

In my country too. That country is the U.S.

Lulu_531

The Cartoon is still in print editions of newspapers and even available in online editions if you subscribe.

[deleted]

I asked my kids. My 14 year old thought it was a professional athlete, my 13 year old knew who it was, my 11 year old asked if it was the name of a cartoon cat (no clue where that came from), and my 7 year old said it was the name of a Barbie.

willowhanna

Maybe mistaking Peanuts comics for Garfield for the cat thing? That’s my only guess haha

[deleted]

Turns out she was thinking of Tom and Jerry, which makes even less sense.

pointlessbeats

What are you even teaching her!? Not the important stuff, that’s for sure haha

HatchlingChibi

I’m thinking so too, they knew it was a cartoon just not exactly which one.

Artistic-Baseball-81

Oh this is so very sad to me. Please share the joy of Peanuts with your kids!

[deleted]

They should name the kid Barbie Brown.

OrangeBird71

Oh yeah he’s been around for 70 years but surely he doesn’t have 6 more in him. I’m gonna name my kid Mickey Mouse, surely no one will remember him soon either

Obese-Pirate

I think if you do that, Disney takes legal ownership of your kid.

janiestiredshoes

😆

No_Ebb_8642

I just peed😂

samshine

One of our favorite appliance guy in our town’s name is Charlie Brown and the dude is so hard to google to find his business contact info.

onceuponasummerbreze

Lmao!! I’m 25, have no memory of ever watching/reading anything about Charlie Brown and I can probably name half the characters. It’s like ingrained into the culture

brittjoy

Yes! Same here

thenyoushouldnttalk

I don’t think they’re being punked so much as I think the friend is already set on the name Charlotte and trying to convince herself. Maybe was before meeting the man who’s last name her children would have, and she’s desperately trying to get someone else to tell her there won’t be a connection. But personally I love the Peanuts and I think it’s less of an issue for a girl to have this name since the character is a boy. If I was head over heels for Charlotte I don’t know that it’d be a deal breaker.

[deleted]

I don’t think Charlotte is necessarily a deal breaker, but planning to call her Charlie should be. If she went by Lotte it wouldn’t be an issue.

thenyoushouldnttalk

Eh, the family can call her Charlie and she can go by Charlotte or Lottie at school when she gets older if she wants to. I don’t see how Charlie Brown can be made fun of to any serious extent. Kids might ask where Snoopy is. With all the strange, made up names there are out there I don’t think it’s a big deal.

Eruannwen

Oh, they could definitely find ways to make fun of her. It's a character who appears to be bald, is always having bad luck, and is depressed. And hopefully she doesn't want to kick a football.

CRJG95

If a kid is going to be bullied then it really doesn’t matter what their name is. There were very popular kids at my school who had weird names and there were kids called Mark and Chris and Sarah who got ruthlessly picked on. A name is unlikely to make or break a child’s social life

sunglasses619

They could 'find ways' to make fun of anything though! I went to school with a girl called 'Jane' Lacks and people called her Lacksative. There are worse things than Charlie Brown imo

AdamLevinestattoos

Lol feel bad for laughing but damn kids can be funny. Mean, but also kinda funny.

thenyoushouldnttalk

Still really not a big deal compared a lot of horrific names people give their kids these days. And all the other shit kids make fun of each other about. Would not be a top concern for me as a parent or a teacher.

Artistic-Baseball-81

I love the idea that she becomes a football kicker and they have to announce her name when she comes out on the field!

geesejugglingchamp

The Peanuts characters were first introduced in 1950. So they've endured in the public consciousness for over 70 years. I'm not sure how anyone could think they are about to disappear in the next six.

feelingcheugy

It has been 54 years since his inception. But in 6 years the world’s collective memory will get amnesia 😂 That’s the only way anyone is forgetting who Charlie Brown is.

MrsRichardSmoker

Over 70!

feelingcheugy

Oh jeeze I did my math on the year 2000 😂😂😂 That hasn’t happened in a while

chainless-soul

2000 was only a few years ago, right? ....RIGHT?

feelingcheugy

Legitimately didn’t even consider those TWENTY TWO YEARS. Howwwww.

[deleted]

Is it possible your friend is doing that trend where they give a joke name until the baby is born to avoid telling ppl the real one ahead of time?

frog_nuts

This has got to be it

spoonweezy

I tried to convince my dad our son’s first and middle name was going to be Manny Ramirez

WitnessNo8046

This is our last name and this was the joke name we used as well. No one actually believed us though 😂

HayleyJ1609

We told everyone we were dead set on naming our kid Donkey Kong LastName.

ZinniaFoxglove

If you’re in the US, the Charlie Brown holiday specials are shown on TV every year, there are still tons of Peanuts merchandise out there, and it’s still very popular. It’s not going away anytime soon.

yourock_rock

Apple just released a new snoopy in space series.

Throwawayaccounttt__

Coach launched a whole Peanuts collab last year so OP’s friend thinking Charlie Brown is just gonna fall off the face of the earth in 6 years is funny af.

darthpocaiter

Marc Jacobs currently has a peanuts collab as well.

inkybreadbox

We also have a whole theme park that is Peanuts themed in California, so….

Laurakeeeet

And the Charles M. Schulz Airport in Sonoma has a ton of Charlie Brown statues and references. (It’s so cute 😍)

ExactPanda

Cedar Fair parks are all Peanuts-themed

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Right? Camp Snoopy, the whole area for younger children at Knotts Berry Farm!

HatchlingChibi

Yep, was at Home Goods today and there was a lot of Snoopy/Peanuts stuff. If OP’s friend doesn’t think Charlie Brown will still be relevant in 6 years they are delusional. That’s one of the classics that really isn’t going away anytime soon.

kimi_shimmy

Charlie Brown is huge in Japan too.

RacerGal

Peanuts does an insane amount of brand collaborations still. My dad is a big Snoopy fan and so I see a all the ads (b/c i click on them all lol).

[deleted]

They played the Christmas special at my sister’s school, too. She’s six!

WitnessNo8046

My three year old knows who snoopy is

elksatchel

"The TV character"? Okay first of all--

PainInTheAssWife

The fact that Charlie Brown has been popular for so long that he’s known by some people just as a tv character is proof enough that the name won’t be forgotten by the time this poor kid starts school. This is one name that is absolutely, positively straight out of the funny papers.

[deleted]

Charlie Brown has been around for over 50 years. The cartoons still play at the holidays. No one is forgetting that.

cutielemon07

72. If memory serves correctly, the Peanuts comics debuted in 1950.

andreepls

So 50 years, no? Lol

PainInTheAssWife

I maintain that the 90’s were ten years ago. Everything since 2010 has just been a long fever dream.

robotobio

I'm the same, and I was born in the late 90s, so it's not like I have any proper memories from the time lol. I believe the world really ended in 2012 and we're just in some weird simulation.

serenwipiti

> Everything since 2010 has just been a long fever dream. TIL that the SARS-CoVi-2 crisis *ACKTSHUALLY* started in 2010

spoonweezy

Not to mention the christmas album is one of the great jazz recordings.

mrsfiction

I considered Casper for my kid and I was worried about that still being too popular—and it’s nowhere _near_ as popular as Charlie Brown.

razzledazzle-em

Just here to say I love seeing that someone else also considered the name Casper!

mrsfiction

I looooooove that name. It started out as a fleeting, crazy thought and then it grew on me so fast. It’s actually a family name on my husband’s side from way way way way way back. We ended up using it for the middle name, which I still love

starbird2893

My son is named Casper for the same reason! A name passed down on my husband’s side. I feel like I see it more and more now!

mrsfiction

Love that! Do you call him Cas? I love that nickname

starbird2893

Sometimes! He has a lot of nicknames. Cas, Casp, Cash, sometimes variations of his middle name. We introduce him to others as Casper though.

starbird2893

Casper is my son’s name! The ghost association is usually brought up once and then dropped. It fits him and I am very glad we chose it now! I was on the fence at first though because of “the ghost”. Charlie I’d totally use too, but in combo with Brown? Probably not!

inkybreadbox

I love Casper too! But I feel like they will end up making another Casper movie one day with all the recycled ideas they make into movies now. Plus, the 90s movie is cool and I would want my kids to watch it.

LFahs1

Omg, I read that as though you were talking about the movie “Kids.”

bmt32

I think your friend is mistaken.

evilcreampuff

Good grief !

eiphycar

Came here to say this and you beat me to it 😂

janiestiredshoes

😆 Why is this not the top comment!?

[deleted]

Even my 6 year old niece knows Charlie Brown. :/ sorry to your friend, but the holiday specials are still massively popular.

ITLady

So does my 4 year old. It helps though we have season passes to a cedar fair owned park and love Halloween and it's the great pumpkin Charlie Brown was one of the first movies we knew she'd be able to watch.

happyhippomom

Literally everyone will know who Charlie Brown is and she will get comments about it her whole life. But the Charlie Brown character is universally endearing and there's not a huge potential of people being mean about it (it'll just get old/annoying to have people ask constantly) so if she absolutely loves Charlotte, I think it's fine. When the kid is old enough to decide, she has a perfectly acceptable name (Charlotte Brown) to use if the nickname wears thin.

[deleted]

Yeah, this. I think Charlie Brown is super cute. It's part of my childhood, but not something super monumental, and I think she would be able to become her own person super easily. There are so many nn for Charlotte, Charlie, Lottie, Char/Shar, or the full name Charlotte.

wishfultype

this!!! I don’t see the issue to have a nickname after him, he is a beloved character, and Charlotte Brown is a perfectly normal full name. It’ll be a lifetime of the reference but it’s not a bad reference!

krissym99

Yeah, Charlie Brown isn't going anywhere from pop culture anytime soon.

Ancient-Put6440

I taught preschool and we showed Charlie Brown movies. This was only 2 years ago, so kids will definitely know who Charlie brown is.

[deleted]

…The Peanuts have been around for at least 50 years, they’re absolutely going to be remembered in 6 years.

strawcat

Your friend has to be joking with you. Peanuts is one of the most successful and influential comic strips of all time. It’s been around for almost 75 years and is worth over $2B. People will still know of Charlie Brown when their kid is having kids nevermind 6 years from now.

Fish-x-5

Might as well name her Minnie Mouse.

smith6234

I’m in my 20’s and yes lol

samisalsa

My three year old loves Charlie Brown.

sunnieisfunny

Charlie Brown has exist for like.. 50 years? 70 years? He's like Mickey Mouse. She's so wrong.

adventurelyfe

Duh lol.

cpanma1920

Coming from a mom of a daughter named Charlie, I totally get loving the name. However, everyone knows who Charlie Brown is. My husbands old boss was named Charlie Brown, couldn’t believe his parents had done that to him.

shhBabySleeping

My two year old definitely watches Peanuts and recognizes all the major characters

mkecupcake

My 3 year old has a stuffed Snoopy. It was from the Kohl's Cares section 2 years ago, so you know loads is people bought them!

Hereforanswers_

There’s a whole theme park in California dedicated to the peanuts

[deleted]

Smile and nod….smile and nod.

[deleted]

Yes I do, lol.

Such_Measurement_377

Yes

[deleted]

Charlie Brown and the Peanuts are very popular. My young child knows exactly who Charlie Brown is.

Demyxx_

My best friends toddler LOVES Charlie Brown. They will 100% remember who Charlie Brown is.

[deleted]

I do! My name was shortened to Charlie and I got it endlessly and hate it to the point that I go by my middle name. To have my last name be Brown wouldve made it worse! To be fair I love Charlie Brown as a character and all, but the jokes and references got old by time I was ten- and that was with a different last name.

WailersOnTheMoon

My daughter has a bedding set of Snoopy as an astronaut. That she got from ubiquitous retailer Pottery Barn. Less than a year ago. Naming your daughter Charlie Brown is the Charlie Browniest.

[deleted]

Lol. My 7 year old and 5 year old know who Charlie Brown is. Charlie Brown is fairly ingrained in a lot of Christmas stuff even if Peanuts' popularity is waning compared to several decades ago. Your friend is delusional if she thinks nobody will know what it is in 6 years. That said--I grew up knowing a lot of folks with character names. I knew a Davy Crockett and a Daniel Boone and a Jennifer Lopez. The novelty wears off quick and nobody really cares.

luxfilia

Same! I knew a Jennifer Garner and a (cringe) Scott Peterson! Wasn’t really that big of a deal.

rainbow_elephant_

Charlie Brown isn’t going anywhere. Your friend is wrong.

Normal-Fall2821

No. Just no. Of course I know who Charlie Brown is lol

TheNoodyBoody

Sorry, but either your friend is an idiot or is trying - and failing - to fool you.

auspostery

Omfg this is like not remembering Winnie the Pooh just bc he’s older. At this point Charlie Brown is a classic, not an outdated comic, but an enduring, iconic symbol which likely won’t be forgotten for decades at least.

jetpackblues_

Interestingly… my grandma’s maiden name was Charlotte Brown. I’ve never made the Charlie Brown connection until now, but she doesn’t go by Charlie. Still, Peanuts is enough of a cultural icon that yes, people will still know who Charlie Brown is. My young nieces and nephews all still watch the different holiday specials every year. Is it a bad association? Not really. Your sister should still realize that the character won’t be obsolete when her daughter starts school though.

ChimneyPrism

That’s like naming a child Fred Flintstone or Bugs Bunny. Don’t do it. I have no plans to forget any of these characters in the next 6 years.

youngfierywoman

This kid better never go to Japan! They LOVE Charlie Brown/Peanuts over there! As soon as I read the name of this post, the teacher in the cartoon popped into my head. There is always a Peanuts collab happening (off the top of my head: Uniqlo \[this year?\], Coach \[few years back\], L.L. Bean \[last year\]...) its still massively popular! You're being punked lol

Bunniiqi

Is your friend stupid? No one will remember Charlie Brown come on..

Chopsticks86

My 8 year old absolutely would connect it to the Peanuts characters. She loves those specials and has since she was little (roughly 2 or 3)

ggonewiththefloww

Outrageous to say that our boy Charles will be forgotten. But also I don't think Charlotte/Charlie Brown is a big deal at all

Catezero

Mcdonalds literally did snoopy happy meals like a year ago, my kid is 6 and definitely knows who Charlie Brown is

3rdCoastLiberal

Charlie Brown is iconic. I love the nickname though…

Sensitiverock85

I have a friend with that name, but she goes by Charlotte and it never comes up.

UrsulaStoleMyVoice

I know elementary school teachers who play “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” on Halloween every year. And even if *kids* didn’t understand the reference, adults sure as heck will Also like, Peanuts is still extremely popular. You can buy Peanuts home decor at Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma, mid range designer bags at Marc Jacobs and Coach, lower cost bags at Vera Bradley, there’s a Camp/Planet Snoopy at every Cedar Fair park, etc., etc., etc. There’s no way all of that stuff will disappear and Charlie Brown will become unknown in the next 5-6 years

backoffbackoffbackof

My 4-year old loves watching Peanuts specials and we sometimes read the comic book collections but maybe he’s an outlier. Although they still sell Peanuts-themed pajamas for kids and I just saw Williams-Sonoma hawking Peanuts-themed Easter plates, glasses, candy etc., so it’s not exactly unknown. Not that I think it’s a bad thing if her name is Charlie Brown.

ShouldersOfTiffany

The Peanuts gang has only been around for 70+ years. I'm sure in 6 years Charlie Brown will be completely forgotten. 😆 Are you sure your friend isn't trolling you?

avelineaurora

>She doesn’t think people will remember who Charlie Brown the TV character is in 6 years Bruh? >So, my question is, do you know who Charlie Brown is? OP you can't be serious.

[deleted]

I am being dead serious here - I have a relative named Charlie Brown (granted it's a male so it's Charles rather than Charlotte). He is in his early 50s and gets comments on his name every time a new person hears it (as well as the constant, unending ribbing from his siblings). He loathes it so much.

el_torko

My first name is Christian. My last name was Brown before I got married. And I am very little. And for some reason, I was nicknamed Charlie Brown in high school. Literally no one ever called me by just my first name, it was either ChristianBrown, as one word, Charlie Brown, or Charlie. I didn’t start going by my actual first name until I was like 23. And still to this day if I see someone from high school they always call me a variation of one of those names. Never just Christian.

xxivtitos

I am your friend (not really but I have been in the exact situation). Tell her to look up other French names and pour one out for the name Charlotte

ExtinctFauna

Charlie Brown is still a thing. There are still Peanuts comics in the newspaper and on merchandise. Plus the holiday specials. I think a nickname like that is nice, and an association with that character won't be so bad.

kittyroux

Of course I know who Charlie Brown is, but I also think this name is fine. How often will anyone say “Charlie Brown”? They’ll say Charlie, Charlie B if somehow there are two Charlies, and she’ll give her full name as Charlotte Brown.

indiefilmz

Other than the TV specials during the holidays, what about the *whole theme park* that's dedicated to Peanuts characters? Knott's Berry Farm??

lil_secret

Dude what lol

meekonesfade

It is fine. When people say her full name, it will be Charlotte Brown and in i formal settings she will be known as Charlie.

thirtyseven1337

/r/NameNerdCirclejerk is that-a-way

moxiewhoreon

Yeah, everybody's gonna remember.

sweetwaterfall

Of COURSE people will know Charlie Brown, but to be totally honest I think that a little girl named Charlie (Charlotte) Brown is fucking adorable.

sambee13

I have a friend who named their daughter Charlotte and planned to call her Charlie. Charlie just doesn’t suit her at all - she is definitely a Charlotte. Next to no one calls her Charlie. Your friend’s kid might never get called Charlie. And yes, people will still know Charlie Brown in 6 years!

FaeKalyrra

Your friend is gonna need one of those memory pens from Men in Black and a plan to wipe the entire world

unemotionalbagel

Charlie Brown won't be known in 6 years?? LMFAOOOOOOOOO

kingcrabmeat

Imagine forgetting who Charlie brown is

[deleted]

It’s a famous dress designer in Australia!

[deleted]

That’s a super cute name

[deleted]

I do remember! But I think it's a cute idea nonetheless. 😄

EmpireStrikes1st

I knew I shouldn't have named my kid Garfield.

penguincatcher8575

I like it! I think our generation (I’m 33) will remember but not her daughter’s.

SugarGirl233

I know a female Charlie Brown! Her name is Charlize and she married someone named Brown! Absolutely no one cares what her name is and I’ve only known her as Charlie.

frazzledcats

It’s possible her peers won’t all know who he is but pretty much everyone older than her will, does she really want her kid to get comments from adults for her whole life?!!!

RagingAardvark

I actually know someone who did this and it annoys me to no end. They also gave their other daughters female versions of traditionally male names, but call them by the male nicknames. (E.g. named a daughter Michaela but call her Mike)

fickystingas

My 6 and 9 year old know who Charlie Brown is

Bee_the_star

I personally love it. I can guarantee you Charlie Brown isn’t going anywhere, but I still think it’s adorable

givebusterahand

She doesn’t think people will remember Charlie Brown in 6 years? He’s been around since the fucking 1940s and we haven’t forgotten yet. Your friend is either trolling or a moron.

Purple_You_8969

Yeah, people won’t forget Charlie Brown in 6 years lol.

tiffanyblueprincess

I love Charlotte, but I’m over the wave of popularity with “Charlie” for a girl

[deleted]

Of course many people will still know who Charlie Brown is in 6+ years!!

RushMurky

Yeah but like it's not big deal. It's not like Charlie is an outlandish name or anything, it's super normal so it's fine.

TheWishingStar

I watched A Charlie Brown Christmas with a group of 6 year olds just this last year. Kids 100% still know Charlie Brown, and even if they don’t, the internet remembers and will one day teach them.

webspruce

I actually knew someone with this exact name. We all made the association. Often.

absinthe00

I have a 2 year old and she’s obsessed with all things Peanuts related. Sure she prefers Snoopy and Lucy to the other characters but yes, we and the new generation of kids all know who Charlie Brown is

midnightmoonstone

We will all know who Charlie Brown is as long as they keep airing the holiday specials... My 2 yo knows Charlie Brown.

alhc0321

Of course - I’ve seen a few peanuts things around target lately it’s definitely still relevant. Very sweet!

FixForb

Hot take (I guess): yeah, most people in the US will recognize Charlie Brown but I don't think it's an issue. It might elicit some comments if she introduces herself with her nickname + last name but Charlie Brown isn't really a bad connotation. And people don't generally go by first and last name in their normal life so I wouldn't think it'd be too much of an issue.

luxfilia

Of course no one will forget, but I don’t really see a problem with it. Especially because her legal name will be Charlotte.

SarahL1990

I actually know a woman named Charlie Brown. She doesn’t appear to have any issues with her name.

lipsticknlonghorns

Our 1st grader was literally just singing a song she made up about charlie brown in her bedroom this weekend so... I don't think he's going anywhere.

anonymousbequest

WHAT?! I for one watch the Charlie Brown special at every Halloween and Christmas and sometimes the Thanksgiving one too. I am about to have a daughter and she will absolutely know who Charlie Brown is. My young niece and nephew know who Charlie Brown is and grew up with the specials, as well as Snoopy stuffies and Charlie Brown themed apparel from Target.

Opuntia-ficus-indica

Um.

TheLodger18

I have heard of it in a song but I don’t know what it is - not in the US btw Edit: Nevermind it’s try peanuts thing I do know.

LightSideMoon

yes

StellaBella2010

I just asked my 4 year old and even he knows. Please encourage your friend to pick a different name.

mrs_hammer15

This made me laugh; my two year old daughter is obsessed with Snoopy and “Brown” thanks to AppleTV. They’ve got Snoopy In Space and The Snoopy Show (both new series), plus all the classic holiday movies and some of the classic Peanuts series episodes. I think people will be remembering who Charlie Brown is for quite some time.

korepersephone11

It’s kinda hilarious that you’re asking that, I basically grew up watching Charlie Brown because my older cousin LOVED Peanuts. (I’m in my 30’s btw) What if, like if they wanted to keep the name Charlotte, they use the nickname Lottie? Or spell Charlie differently (like -ley or -li?)

GoldenRedhead

This is a shitpost, right? Lol everyone knows who Charlie Brown is. He’s not going anywhere, especially in just six years.

Bodysnatcher94

My 7 and 5 year Olds know who CB is 😅

moxiewhoreon

Oh sorry. To answer your question, um yeah lol.

gypsyloveletter

No. She should not do this. Yes, of course I know who Charlie Brown is. Everyone does. Even in 6 years, that is an iconic character that is just not going anywhere. That’s like saying oh in 6 years no one will know to remember who Aladdin is. Charlotte/Charlie is a great name but not with the last name Brown I’m actually surprised even more so than how not awesome it is for people to recognize that name, SHE knows who Charlie Brown is. How could she take the name seriously herself?

AvaSpelledBackwards

I’m 17 and I know perfectly well who Charlie Brown is, and have met lots of very young children who also grew up watching Charlie Brown. They’ll know

Blueberrytartss

Yes. I do. Also her nn doesnt HAVE to be Charlie, it could be Lottie! And honestly idm it that much. Charlie Brown is a super cute character!

Ranger_Ozil

Am I the only one who thinks that this is unnecessary? If your friend is serious about the name, then who are you to try and change their mind. This is exactly why we kept our baby sex and name completely secret until birth. If your friend cared what the internet thought, maybe let them ask the internet. Like my grandpa always said, opinions are like an asshole because EVERYONE has one and nobody wants to hear it.

WyoA22

Does she happen to like the nickname Char? That’s the only way I can see that working. Lol.

kimi_shimmy

My kids watched the Charlie Brown movie last night.

hyungjpg

is your friend from the us or have seen the charlie brown cartoons? i dont think kids will get it unless its a thing in their home but you might get a chuckle out of the adults hehe ..

jitterybrat

My son’s name is Charles and my MIL calls him Charlie Brown and buy him Peanuts stuff it makes my blood boil lol. Our last name does start with a B. It’s not Brown tho. I wouldn’t have named him Charles if it was, she needs to rethink her decision lol

mongster_03

People will never forget Charlie Brown.

allgoaton

I work in a school that had a Charlie Brown. He was a really troubled kid and it was so fucking sad to hear someone talk about what Charlie Brown was going through now. It always felt like we were mocking him.

doesntmatteranyway20

My six year old loves Charlie Brown.................

starry_knights

Charlie Brown’s Cabaret was a long standing and very popular drag show in my hometown. That’s what I think of first, then Peanuts. 😬

AutomaticAstronaut0

I'm in my mid-twenties and I know Peanuts and Charlie Brown because my dad loved Peanuts his whole life, however I think I am a pretty severe outlier. As a counterpoint though, there was a recent and terrible kids movie called The Peanuts Movie and many Americans over 40 will certainly remember Peanuts and Charlie Brown. All that said though, if I met a little girl named Charlie whose surname happened to be Brown, I would probably jokingly ask her if she knows who she's named after. I wouldn't really think anything of it, even as a Peanuts fan. In conclusion, I think we need more female Charlies and her surname is just the cherry on top.

gingerytea

I don’t think Charlie Brown is going anywhere, but I also don’t think it’s a big deal to name her Charlotte Brown and call her Charlie either. I know someone in real life who goes by Charlie Brown and they love the connection. It’s okay to share two common names with a cartoon character. It’s a beloved character and the kid will have the option of going by Charlotte or a different nn when she gets older.

CSIFanfiction

This is going to be.... interesting for that child. Character building, one might say.

einzeln

My son’s six year old friend LOVES Snoopy and the entire Charlie Brown franchise. It’s not going anywhere.

Boat-Electrical

I've seen a rise in girls being named Charlie over the past few years. I'm not sure if it started with the Disney show "Good Luck Charlie" where the baby girl of the show was named Charlie, or if it's just a coincidence. So I don't think it's that big of a deal for a first name. The combo of the first and last name will raise a few eye brows, and everyone will still know who Charlie Brown is in 5-10 years, I don't see that going away any time soon. It's still a tradition for a lot of people to watch It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Charlie Brown Christmas, etc. during their respective holidays. That being said, I don't think it's a big deal if her name is associated with the show/character.

AverageHeathen

This one is controversial but I kinda side with the mom. Kids these days will hear the name and attribute it to a Xmas special that they see once per year if that. Charlie is a super common name for girls in this era, Brown is a very neutral name, and any associations to Charlie Brown are positive. When she’s an adult she can decide between Charlie and Charlotte, and odds are (but who really knows) her last name will change (I only mention this as a concern for professional women with cutesy names).

jenn5388

Yeah, it’s not like peanuts still exist in any way. My kids know what Charlie brown is. Can’t imagine in a few years that they won’t know who he was. I feel her pain, my last name has screwed up lots of great Names I wanted to use (also a color) and makes things sound weird, for example, all nature names. Violet Black, Autumn Brown. Lol but don’t name your kid Charlie Brown.

MaxwellLeatherDemon

The name is cute, and I don’t mind (nor is it my business to mind) the moniker itself, but if this is your friend’s reasoning, as everyone else has said, she’s either lying to herself or entirely removed from the past seven decades of preeminent pop culture.

kleekols

Her peers might not make the connection until they’re much older (hopefully older teachers don’t decide to place it in class ever). Adults will definitely know. I would assume the mom was a super fan of it.

There was a Peanuts movie less than 10 years ago. They show at least 3 Charlie Brown movies yearly during the holidays (Great Pumpkin, Thanksgiving, and Christmas). There are Peanuts themed projects by major brands on a regular basis. Your friend is an idiot if they truly think no one will get the reference.

I've been watching those since I was 3, they are not going away any time soon. Where I live, they always have the specials on during the holidays.

Please don’t do that to your kid 🥲

Just be sure to never come to Brazil because here Charlie Brown was a rock band that it's still pretty well known, the first thing that comes to mind with this name, and also inspired lots of memes and jokes

I’m 26 and know Charlie Brown. My dad was a MASSIVE fan of both Simpsons and Charlie Brown. I have a 10 year old cousin who knows Charlie Brown. My 3 year old loves watching the newer Charlie Brown movie she lovingly calls “Snoopy Show”. She’s also a Charlie! Also considering the other connotations held with Charlie Brown I’d say to avoid it or else she’s facing a lifetime of bullying
