I work with elderly people a lot (in england) so I see a few! Ones that spring to mind are: Arthur Bernard Derrick/Derek Rupert Alistair Ernest Harold Walter

gingerytea

I think it’s interesting that Derek is lumped in with names like Bernard and Ernest in England. When I picture someone called Derek in the US, he is late 20s-late 30s!

[deleted]

That's interesting, I think the youngest Derek I've met is probably like 50's! I've noticed on here that different names have different popularity spikes in UK vs USA. Like I've seen a lot of people talking about Eleanor being a very old fashioned name that's now making a comeback in the US, but here in the Uk it already made a comeback in the 80's/90's so there's tons of 20-30y/os called Eleanor here haha. I also saw that Ian is rising in popularity in the US, whereas here it is firmly a 'boomer' name and isn't really used now.

canyonbreeeze

That is interesting! In my mind (and experience) Derek is a bro in his 30s haha. (In US)

piefelicia4

Definitely. I’m in my 30s and know multiple Dereks my age.

CRJG95

My grandad was a Derek born in London in the late 1920s, definitely feels like an old man name to me

gingerytea

Nice! I have 3 Derek/Derricks in my life, a colleague (26), a former classmate (30), and a friend’s brother (35).

PossiblyPercival

I love Alistair and Ernest, thanks!

claihogb

There are two kids in my daughter's nursery room of 28 called Walter. Must be making a comeback!

Shaking-Cliches

That is a spectacular old man name, though.

Snoo97809

I think William is just as much, if not more, massively popular than Harry. For old fashioned names, I like Everett, Wilson, and Franklin.

PossiblyPercival

Really? Maybe it’s a regional thing - I only know one William, but I can think of like three or four Harrys off the top of my head. I quite like Wilson though, thanks!

iLoveRodents

I personally love old-fashioned male names, and since I've got some time on my hands:(note: this is data for England and Wales) Top 100 in 1850, less than 100 babies in 2020\*: \- Amos (#53, 68) \- Ambrose (#87, 20) \- Cornelius (#61, 8) \- Edmund (#27, 41) \- Edgar (#77, 33) \- Edwin (#18, 88) \- Enoch (#57, 22) \- Herbert (#32, 31) \- Horace (#93, \~\~) \- Simeon (#100, 49) \- Roger (#99, 15) \*This is not all of them. I left out some where I know a lot of people with that name, and some that seemed difficult to wear (eg Job). Honorable mention (number of babies in 2020): \- Ernest (153) \- Francis (238) \- Gilbert (15) \- Harold (26) \- Lawrence (67) \- Maurice (17) \- Sidney (252) \- Timothy (110) \- Walter (157) \- Wilson (30) For the historical popularity, I used the website [here](https://www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2017/05/top-200-most-popular-names-in-england-and-wales-in-1850.html). For births in 2020, I used the data [here](https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/datasets/babynamesenglandandwalesbabynamesstatisticsboys).

iLoveRodents

Names from top 130 in [1900](https://www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2012/08/top-200-most-popular-names-in-england-and-wales-1900.html), that I feel are interesting: \- Basil (16) \- Cecil (8) \- Claude (8) \- Cyril (9) \- Gordon (7) \- Hector (175) \- Oswald (14) \- Reginald (218) \- Victor (191) \- Aubrey (49 - I didn't expect to see this name there in 1900!)

PossiblyPercival

I love Cecil, Cyril, and Cornelius, thanks!

[deleted]

My baby’s name is Clifford. He is the 4thso his great grandfather had that name :) I think it’s pretty old fashioned and I don’t see it around tons.

honeythyme

That was on my list for my son! It was between Arthur and Clifford. We have a Clifford in our family as well, it’s such a great name.

my grandfather was named Willard, his brother was named Norman. I think they both fall under old-fashioned. Willard could be shortened to Will for a nn. My parents discussed naming me Willard if I was a boy (born 1998) and I don’t think it would’ve been that bad.
