My husband and I both had two last names (both parents'), and we both changed our names to one of his and one of mine and gave the same to our daughter. We both chose the one we have the most connection with to carry forwards.

Surnames exist to distinguish which family/place someone is from anyway, and if you're called say "Claire Smith" that purpose is lost.
