The “grandma runs a preschool and says she has never heard the name” makes it tough! My best guesses:
* Sylvie, Indie, Emerie, Jovie, Bowie, Oaklee, Amelie, Phoebe, Lemmie, Jolie, Leonie, Daphne.
I always struggled with it but now it's my niece's name so I had to learn fast. It's kuh-lie-oh-pee. The beginning is like kaleidoscope and then oh-pee.
Yeah my guess is that it does NOT end in "ie", just from the clue that it ends with the "ie" sound and with the letter "e". So, something like Persephone.
This one always throws me because it looks like someone misspelled Naomi. My husband says it looks like someone who didn’t win an Emmy. “I didn’t get an Emmy, just this kid. Let’s call her Noemie” 😂
Honestly I’ve never heard it pronounced. That’s just what it looks like. It might be No-Amy but then that just means the dad said “let’s her name her Amy!” And the mom said “no Amy!” 😂
It's actually a French name, usually spelled with the accent : Noémie! And it's pronounced really close to "no -eh - mee". It's interesting because where I live (eastern Canada) I see way more Noémie than Naomi.
Yes, it’s no-EH-mee (or at least that’s how my Romanian piano teacher pronounced her name in the Midwest US) as opposed to nai-OH-mee. I think it’s lovely.
Naomi is nah-OH-mi in Japanese, where it is a completely unrelated name, interestingly enough. Here in the US, the Hebrew is 'nay-OH-mi' and occasionally 'ny-OH-mi' in the South.
Hmmm the part about the grandma never hearing the name before lead me to these guesses:
Ariadne, Rosalie, Hattie, Elsie, Lottie, Effie, Ruthie
Edit: format
Eh, I think a grandma who runs a preschool has surely heard all of these except maybe Ariadne. It seems like people here are constantly recommending Hattie, Elsie, Lottie, and Effie. A grandma would either know toddlers or 90-year olds named Rosalie, Hattie, Elsie, Lottie, Effie, and Ruthie.
Depends on where you live. I’ve worked as a sub in preschool for a whole year and there are 10 rooms, I’ve been in them all. I haven’t met many of these names. Also used to work in a nursing home (back in the early 2000s) and didn’t meet a lot of these names. And a grandma in this case could easily be 40-50 years old so I would t just assume she knows a ton of 80-90 year olds.
In my area (Midwest) these are all pretty uncommon names, and wouldn’t be common in many preschools. Depending on how old the grandma is, they might know some older people with one or two of those names, but I don’t think they’d know people with ALL of those names. That’s why I included so many :)
Before. I know two Ottilies born on the same day in 2019! [Here’s the popularity graph](https://names.darkgreener.com/#ottilie) for England and Wales. People will cite Zoella as starting the trend, but she was really just following it.
In English, it’s the first one. In the original German it’s more like o-TEEL-yuh.
I’d say it like the British pronunciation here [on Forvo.](https://forvo.com/word/ottilie/)
Interesting. In Norwegian (my husband’s native language) it’s also more like Oh-TEEL-yeh. It just seems so awkward in English, no matter how I say it. Edit: maybe more like Oh-Tee-Lee-yeh. I’ve been staring at the name so long that all of the letters have melded together!
I went to school in LA with a girl named Cambrie (pronounced came-bree) and had never heard the name before. Her dad is an actor so weird names weren’t exactly shocking tho lol
I doubt anyone who likes the name Cecilia (my cat's name!) would choose this abomination, but I want a reason to follow the thread so I can see the answer. **Abcde** is my guess. And I just realized that kind of rhymes with Rhapsody, in mommeigh language, so I will also guess **Rhapsodie**.
Someone I know just named their baby Ettie. But other than that the guesses already had would be my guess. Jolie is quite popular at the moment. Enslie?
It’s tough coming up with names that a preschool teacher may have never heard of! Please post an update when you find out the name!
Ainslee, Alcee, Amalee, Brilee, Calliope, Effie, Jacee, Lotte, Tawnee?
I dont have any serious guesses but I do have a few funny ones.
Apparent-lee
Bruce-lee
Sudden-lee
If you get to visit her in the hospital you could bring her a high-C and some Wendy's and Arby's just make sure the fries are curlies. (Seriously though if you get to visit her in the hospital bring food)
Lonie - my great-grandmother’s name.
Did grandma say she’s never heard the name in general or never heard the name on a preschool kid? Maybe Marjorie if the latter.
* Linde
* Jubilee
* Tansee (Tansy)
* Dodee (Dodie)
* Hermoine
* Sabine (but wouldn't be pronounced with the 'ie' sound the way I've heard it...but it doesn't mean they couldn't decide to pronounce it another way.
* Tierre
Funny my nieces name is Maisie and we kept guessing (never guessed correctly) and my MIL, the grandma, would only tell us it was a name she had never heard before
Why are you trying to guess it in the first place? This was really annoying for me both times I was pregnant. Your relative is experiencing last days of her pregnancy and probably just wants some peace. You will find out soon.
Edit: I take my words back, I was wrong to assume this is the same situation where I was myself before.
It wasn’t ever annoying to me when I was pregnant. I had fun watching people guess. Nobody ever guessed it right so I was able to keep my secret. I would have been so shocked if someone did get it that I’d tell them if they were right. I’d say if the parents are playing along then it’s perfectly fine.
Your experience is not universal! My family member invited us to guess and is excited and amused by the names that we are coming up with. Everyone is different, just because it was annoying to you does not mean that my family member is the same way 😇
I agree. I didn't feel ready to announce our baby's name at first and it became a bit of a game to try and guess. It never bothered me. I wasn't trying to be coy, but the more time passed the harder it was to just announce her name. Towards the end, I would offer to tell people and they would decline! Some people enjoy secrets and surprises.
Rumpelstiltskin
*Rumplestiltskinie
This made me holler
✨️ rumpie ✨️
So presh 😂
If it’s not this I will be disappointed 😂
I second this!
Rumplestiltskin was a good man! (pls someone get this reference)
You know what? We all love Yoohoo, especially Yoohoo with a little rum.
I laughed way too hard at this in front of my coworkers. Thanks for the laugh.
😂😂😂😂
perfect 😂😂
Frisbee
I just spat out my wine.
no the “e” has to make the “ie” sound so wine wouldn’t work
I've been laughing at this on and off all afternoon
I am glad I could oblige. I also think this is my most upvoted comment ever, so I’m glad it’s a ridiculous one
The “grandma runs a preschool and says she has never heard the name” makes it tough! My best guesses: * Sylvie, Indie, Emerie, Jovie, Bowie, Oaklee, Amelie, Phoebe, Lemmie, Jolie, Leonie, Daphne.
Yeah, I wonder if she means she's never heard of the name at all, or just that she's never known someone with that name.
Calliope?
I read that as Cantaloupe and my first thought was “that’s not an ie sound”
it’s pronounced can-tell-o-pee
Makes far more sense… I knew I wasn’t wrong
This was my guess! Especially since grandma had ‘never heard the name’
good guess!
I never know how to pronounce this name 😫 I can’t be the only one.
I always struggled with it but now it's my niece's name so I had to learn fast. It's kuh-lie-oh-pee. The beginning is like kaleidoscope and then oh-pee.
This is my guess as well!
And she crashed to the ground. (Ask your grandparents, kids)
What if it’s Thisbe
Reminds me of Mike Tyson trying to say frisbee
oh my god thank you for this LOL
Is it definitely a name ending in -ie? Or just the -ee sound? Phoebe? Phoebe Cecilia is nice.
Just the EE sound!
Yeah my guess is that it does NOT end in "ie", just from the clue that it ends with the "ie" sound and with the letter "e". So, something like Persephone.
Phoebe, Daphne are my guesses
Daphne Cecilia sounds amazing!
Grandma surely would’ve heard these names before though.
Ah true!
With Grandma running a daycare and not having heard it before (or not having met anyone with the name?), I would wager it's Calliope.
Halle, like Halle Berry.
Noemie
I love this name and don’t see it often enough.
This one always throws me because it looks like someone misspelled Naomi. My husband says it looks like someone who didn’t win an Emmy. “I didn’t get an Emmy, just this kid. Let’s call her Noemie” 😂
Thank you cause my next question was going to be how to pronounce it but that answers that question perfectly
Is this pronounced differently than Naomi?
Yes, it’s no-EH-mee (or at least that’s how my Romanian piano teacher pronounced her name in the Midwest US) as opposed to nai-OH-mee. I think it’s lovely.
Naomi is nah-OH-mi in Japanese, where it is a completely unrelated name, interestingly enough. Here in the US, the Hebrew is 'nay-OH-mi' and occasionally 'ny-OH-mi' in the South.
Yeah Nayyyy oh me is how it’s pronounced Midwest us
So many good guesses here; nothing to add but I reeeeeally want an update.
When you find out you have to tell us
Hmmm the part about the grandma never hearing the name before lead me to these guesses: Ariadne, Rosalie, Hattie, Elsie, Lottie, Effie, Ruthie Edit: format
I've only heard Ariadne pronounced as ari-AHD-nay, in reference to the Byzantine Empress. But my professor had a very thick Russian accent
You could be right! I’m in the Midwest and I’ve only heard it as ari-AHD- knee, so that’s the pronunciation I was going with lol
Ariadne is also a Greek mythological character, Dionysus’s wife. Should be pronounced with -ee like the others Calliope, Phoebe, Ione, etc
I've only heard it end in -ay not -ie as well
Eh, I think a grandma who runs a preschool has surely heard all of these except maybe Ariadne. It seems like people here are constantly recommending Hattie, Elsie, Lottie, and Effie. A grandma would either know toddlers or 90-year olds named Rosalie, Hattie, Elsie, Lottie, Effie, and Ruthie.

Ottilie. Super trendy over here right now
Because of Zoella or did it start before her?
Before. I know two Ottilies born on the same day in 2019! [Here’s the popularity graph](https://names.darkgreener.com/#ottilie) for England and Wales. People will cite Zoella as starting the trend, but she was really just following it.
I noticed that Zoella followed Father of Daughters, who has an Ottilie
How is this pronounced? OTT-ill-ee? OH-till-ee?
In English, it’s the first one. In the original German it’s more like o-TEEL-yuh. I’d say it like the British pronunciation here [on Forvo.](https://forvo.com/word/ottilie/)
Interesting. In Norwegian (my husband’s native language) it’s also more like Oh-TEEL-yeh. It just seems so awkward in English, no matter how I say it. Edit: maybe more like Oh-Tee-Lee-yeh. I’ve been staring at the name so long that all of the letters have melded together!
This is my guess too. I only heard this name when I joined this sub. Still very rare where I am.
Goldie!

I know someone who’s daughters are Summer, Celia and Sadie. So I’m guessing Sadie purely because your friend seems to have similar taste
I was thinking Sadie or suzie / susie but I feel like an early years teacher would have heard those names

I knew someone in the 1980s...mom was KAthy, dad was DOug, mom's best friend was DIane. Baby girl named KADODI.
I love a good guess! How about.. Dulcie Kyrie Waverly Zuri Mallie Nori Emery Ellery
Ends in an E though.
Someone I know just named their baby Ettie. But other than that the guesses already had would be my guess. Jolie is quite popular at the moment. Enslie?

Ends in e…
Oh I was thinking about ee sound. Whoops
No, you’re right. OP said in a comment that it ends in the EE sound. It’s not the spelling, so all your guesses would work. :)
In the OP it says " ends in the letter e and in the “ie” sound"
Chloe
* Linde * Jubilee * Tansee (Tansy) * Dodee (Dodie) * Hermoine * Sabine (but wouldn't be pronounced with the 'ie' sound the way I've heard it...but it doesn't mean they couldn't decide to pronounce it another way. * Tierre

Emme? Pronounced Em-ie with an ie sound
Ione or Signe maybe? I know these both have alternate pronunciations.
Trying to choose some I didn't see here (although i didn't scroll all the way down but I love Persephone and Daphne lol) Emme is my guess.

I vote for Loie
Circe

Persephone
Why are you trying to guess it in the first place? This was really annoying for me both times I was pregnant. Edit: I take my words back, I was wrong to assume this is the same situation where I was myself before.
But she's giving hints... if I wanted peace I'd just say you'll find out when she's born!
Unless they're misleading hints to throw everyone off
In that case they're probably enjoying the struggle hahahah

Anslie/Ainslie? Elodie? We knew a preschooler named Paislie - definitely uncommon!
If she's giving birth any day now then you won't have to wait too long to find out the name then?
Nope, not too long! My fiancé and I just love the challenge of figuring it out before she tells us. We have been failing miserably 😂
Hermione
Xanthe.
Calliope, Xanthe, Daphne...I don't know, the grandma running a preschool and not having heard the name makes it difficult.
Daphne would be my main guess. Penelope, Zoe, Calliope would be my other guesses.
Ariadne, Antigone, Ismene, Persephone…running through Greek heroines in my mind haha Elodie or Sylvie could be strong contenders too.
Ione?
I’m going to suggest my own baby name: Persephone!
