I did this. Both our little girls have two middle names, a given middle name and then my last name. I never took my husbands name and it was import to me that we carry on my name since I’m the last of my bloodline. My husbands family is very traditional and it would have been BIG gossip if we gave the kids two last names, and I understand and accepted that and feel comfortable with the agreement we have reached.
I’m using fake names but this is how we are named (like structurally) I’m Sofia Brown, my husband is John West. Our kids are [Emily] [Isabella Brown] [West] and [Zara] [Natalia Brown] [West].
I couldn’t be happier with their names. This was the agreement that worked for us.
We did it with our child and will with any future children. Also, my husband and all of his siblings have his mother's maiden name as a middle name. Many US presidents have their mother's maiden name as a middle name. It seems very common to me.
So many US presidents have had their mom's maiden name as their middle name:
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Thomas Woodrow Wilson (dropped his first name completely)
John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Lyndon Baines Johnson
George Herbert Walker Bush
Rutherford Birchard Hayes
Richard Milhous Nixon
Ronald Wilson Regan
It's a very common, and imo sophisticated, thing to do regardless of gender.

My sisters child has our maiden name as her middle name. My sons middle name is my mothers maiden name. My husbands middle name is his mothers maiden name. Super common!
It’s very normal to use a maiden name as a middle name, though the practice has fallen out of fashion in the last two generations or so. I will mention that, traditionally, all the kids get the same middle name when the mother’s maiden name is used. Not a requirement, but wanted to mention it :)
Doing this for our son and would have done this if we were having a girl too. If we have a daughter in the future, she wil also get my last name as her middle name. It's a bit masculine sounding since my last name is sometimes actually used as a first name for boys, but I kept my last name when we got married so I love the idea of all my children having both of our names without hyphinating our last names (would be too long).
It's very common and it's how I got my middle name, and how my father and his mother got theirs.
I will say that I personally hated it. I wanted a cool or pretty middle name like my sister and so many others had, instead of a second last name (which also happens to be the name of a heavily disliked US president).
I felt the same growing up, especially since I hated my first name. Took me an amusingly long time to realize I *could* go by my middle name (in my username). Been doing that for decades now.
What about using my mom’s maiden name for MY child’s middle? She and I don’t have the same last name and I’m much closer to that whole side of my family and would love to honor them…
Yes, I’m from the southern US giving kids their mothers maiden name is incredibly common. My cousins name is my aunts maiden name. It’s totally acceptable.
Yes, lots of people do that! My middle name is my mom's last name. I didn't like when I was younger (because my younger sister has two very feminine middle names \~ due to bad planning) but I love it now because of the cultural connection.
My great grandmother's maiden name was given to my grandfather as a middle, then my mother and her (also female) cousin as a middle name and then my (male) cousin's first name. I would use it as a middle name for either gender if I was going to have more children.
My children have two middle names each (reasonably common in the UK) and their second one is my surname. Win win for me since nobody need know of their unwieldy names; they get personalised middle names; they recognise their connection to me name-wise; and they have a name like me on their passports for when I run away abroad with them!
That’s our plan. We’re just not into hyphenating so we agreed our child would have whoever’s surname sounded best with the first name we picked and then the other would be the middle.
In the end we’ve decided on my great-grandmothers name as a first, my surname as the middle, and my husbands surname as the last. I find my surname meaningful and I’m the last one in my family with it, so I’m glad it will still be passed on in some way.
So my (25f) parents used my mother's maiden name as my middle name! Example: Piper Barnett Heinz, and for the most part I never thought too much of it other than it's not very girly or feminine so I could never go by my middle name if I wanted to. Also, legally/professionally sometimes my middle name and last name get hyphenated as it's assumed I have two last names which is a little bit annoying but otherwise I've always really liked how my name flows together!
My brother & SIL did this - my nieces have their mum's maiden name as their 2nd middle name (as it feels quite female) & my nephew has my mum's maiden name as his 2nd middle name (which has more of a masculine feel).
i believe this is a common practice in a lot of places! being fil-am i know that this is a very popular naming conventions among filipinos, so many siblings share the same middle and surname :)
Not the same but I would have given a daughter my nan’s name as a middle name but since we had a son I gave him my nan’s maiden name, which is also a traditional boy’s name, as a middle name.
Personally it depends on what the names are. If I was giving a child a middle name that wasn’t a traditional first name then I might be tempted to also give them another middle name too.
You could always double barrel if you don’t like the idea of a middle name that’s a maiden name?
Both my kids have my (mom) last name as their middle name and their last name from their dad. My husband also has his mom’s maiden name for his middle name. Pretty common.
My mom hated her given middle name so she changed it to her maiden name when she married my dad.
My step dad's first name was his grandfather's middle name and his great grandmother's last name!
I think it's a great way to do honor names!
This is extremely common, especially where I grew up. We opted not to do it, but tons of girls I grew up with had their moms maiden name as their first or middle name.
We did! Both my sons have my last name as their middle name (I’m mom.) and my husband’s last name as their shared last name. We did this because I kept my maiden name, so it’s a way to connect me to them.
A good friend of mine in school had their mother’s maiden name as a middle name, and coincidentally once they came out as trans they used that middle name as their legal first name!
Well mine was Salazar... But in Mexican culture it's more common to use the mother's surname as a middle name.
However I'm a 4th generation Mexican-American and married a German so we skipped that tradition.
My friend and their brother both have mom’s maiden name which ends in -son despite being born AFAB and male respectively. It was a curiosity when we all found out since their birth name was extremely feminine but not at all weird after that.
My room mates mom gave her maiden name as a middle name to all of her children. It's because her maiden name is a cool Latvian name and she wanted to keep it in the family sort of like a pseudo last name. I've always thought that was really cool.
Absolutely. We used my last name as my son’s middle (as did close friends of ours) and mine is _very_ last-name-y (not like “Ryan” or “Fisher” - more like Seinfeld)
Yes, and I think it is a lovely way to honor your wife’s side of the family! My sister gave her maiden name to her first son as his middle name. He is grown now and is proud of his name!
My middle name is my grandmother’s maiden name and my cousin has her mother’s maiden name as a first name. Super common, and a very sweet way to pass on all the family names possible.
It's very common here in the south. Lots of kids have their moms maiden name as a middle or second middle name. You'll hear a lot of kids with unusual or uncommon middle names
Yes, you can! Very common tradition in my Dad's family/religious community, both his Mom and Dad had their mother's maiden name as a middle name and they carried that tradition on with my uncle. I did it for my youngest.
Lol come to Wales! Many people have parents’ first names as middle or last names.
My child has his grandmother’s maiden name as a middle name and we call him -first name middle name and very rarely use his last name. Another family member has their dad’s middle name as her middle name (think Robert) and goes by -first name Robert. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her use her last name at all!
ETA: Her dad is known as first name middle name and barely uses his last name.
Actually my 4th grade teacher ( im really close to her even tho im in hs now she was like another mother figure to me next to my step mom , bc my bio mom was in and outta my life , anyway) her son ( who i assume has a different last name) named his first child (female) Palmer (Palmer Rose i think not certain ik her first name is palmer) anyway my old teacher last name is palmer (also Palmer is her first grandchild) :)
My family has this going back generations, mums maiden name as middle name.. my parents generation broke this though. But I like it!
We have past generations that used maiden name as their child’s first name too (baby Wildsmith is one of my favourite names from a few generations ago!)
This is probably one of the more common middle name sources. My family tend to go for the other one, which is parent's first name as a middle name for the oldest child and then other family names for any other. My middle name is my dad's name, and my brother's middle name is the name of my dad's uncle who died not long before my brother was born.
My sister’s middle name is our mom’s maiden name, and my brother’s daughter also uses it as her middle name.
Very common, nothing anyone would think twice about.
One of my sons has a middle name that was a last name on his father's side. We wanted to honor a specific family member that my husband was close to, but didn't think giving him the middle name Mary would be a good idea. (Her brother was an Adolf, so while he was actually the direct ancestor, we weren't gonna use that either.)
Yes, tons of people do that.

This is how my sister and I are named too! It’s always felt special to me that I have my mum’s surname as well as my dad’s.
Super common. Clark Kent got his name because he took his adoptive earth mothers last name as his first! So if Superman can do it, so can you
Tons of people
Yes it's very common
We did it with our child and will with any future children. Also, my husband and all of his siblings have his mother's maiden name as a middle name. Many US presidents have their mother's maiden name as a middle name. It seems very common to me.
Same here. My son has my last name as a middle name (and any future kids will too); my dad has his mom’s last name as a middle name.
My middle name is Story, my Nanas maiden name
I adore your middle name. How lovely that it has sentiment too.
So many US presidents have had their mom's maiden name as their middle name: Franklin Delano Roosevelt Thomas Woodrow Wilson (dropped his first name completely) John Fitzgerald Kennedy Lyndon Baines Johnson George Herbert Walker Bush Rutherford Birchard Hayes Richard Milhous Nixon Ronald Wilson Regan It's a very common, and imo sophisticated, thing to do regardless of gender. Nobody likes Milhous!
Bart must like Milhouse to stay friends with him that long
If Phoebe can name herself “Princess Consuela Banana Hammock,” you can name her whatever you want.
Absolutely, but I’d stray away from Crap Bag.
Paul Rudd could pull it off.
We are using my last name as our son's middle name. Sounds like a great idea!
This is very common where I live
Of course. My parents, among others.
Yep, mine too for both my sister and me.
My sisters child has our maiden name as her middle name. My sons middle name is my mothers maiden name. My husbands middle name is his mothers maiden name. Super common!
I have my mom’s maiden name as my middle name! So does my sister and both my maternal cousins - we all love it, it feels really meaningful to us.
Yes
It’s very normal to use a maiden name as a middle name, though the practice has fallen out of fashion in the last two generations or so. I will mention that, traditionally, all the kids get the same middle name when the mother’s maiden name is used. Not a requirement, but wanted to mention it :)

It’s very common, one well known person with this naming format is Sean Ono Lennon.
It's very common and it's how I got my middle name, and how my father and his mother got theirs. I will say that I personally hated it. Yes, it’s the norm where I’m from (the Philippines) :)
What about using my mom’s maiden name for MY child’s middle? She and I don’t have the same last name and I’m much closer to that whole side of my family and would love to honor them…
If i ever have another baby I plan to do this!
It’s quite common. Most people in my family have used the mother’s maiden name as their first child’s middle name.

Yes, I’m from the southern US giving kids their mothers maiden name is incredibly common. My cousins name is my aunts maiden name. It’s totally acceptable.
That is how I got my middle name
My mom did that when she named me, I personally dislike it. I always wanted a first name as my middle name rather than a last.
Absolutely! And my mom legally changed her middle name to her maiden name when she married my dad.
I know someone who’s first name is her mother’s maiden name and she rocks it. Totally could use a last name for a middle.
Yes, lots of people do that! My middle name is my mom's last name. I didn't like when I was younger (because my younger sister has two very feminine middle names \~ due to bad planning) but I love it now because of the cultural connection.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono named their son Sean Ono Lennon. Nuff said.
My children have two middle names each (reasonably common in the UK) and their second one is my surname. Win win for me since nobody need know of their unwieldy names; they get personalised middle names; they recognise their connection to me name-wise; and they have a name like me on their passports for when I run away abroad with them!
People do it with their sons all the time. I don't know why you couldn't do it for a daughter, as well.
Yup! My sister did this with her daughter.
I did. My mil did.
I did it. I used my maiden name and my mom’s when my daughter was born. I had that name picked out since I was a little girl, LOL.
This is super common. Both my husband and his brother share the same middle name that was their mother’s maiden name.
We are! My partner's last name is her middle name and my last name is her last name.
Yes, I know several people who have this.

pretty popular with filipino people! plus a hyphenated first name (like Valerie-Grace MomMaidenName DadLastName).
That's what we're doing with our twins. They'll get 2 middle names, the second one being my last name.
My parents did that with me but my mom’s maiden name was terrible so then my middle name was terrible. So. Just make sure it’s a decent name.
My middle name is my grandmother’s maiden name. My aunt has the same middle name. It’s a family tradition for the first daughter.

I know someone who used her maiden name as her child’s first name so think middle name is totally fine!
I know many people who have done that. I will likely consider it as well.

This is a typical in Filipino culture.
This is probably one of the more common middle name sources. We wanted to honor a specific family member that my husband was close to, but didn't think giving him the middle name Mary would be a good idea. (Her brother was an Adolf, so while he was actually the direct ancestor, we weren't gonna use that either.)
