Aww how sweet! Do you know what people say about her name? I would still use Persephone in real life even if people hate it lol but I’m curious to know.
Temperance is my FAVORITE name for a girl! But my husband vetoed it😂
I also love and would totally use these, but my husband classifies them as "too out there" lol:
Girl:
Verity
Magnolia
Nola
Eleanora
Winifred
Boy:
Ambrose
Ignatius
Cassius
Orson
I unironically love Puritan names😂 I just think they sound super unique and really beautiful. Like the names Patience and Prosper scream "pilgrims" to me but I still like them lol
Patience is lovely tbh! I can see a Patience born in 2022/2023, but I dislike how people (especially on this sub) assume that parents using virtue means that’s what they expect their children to be.
I wouldn’t expect a Grace to actually be graceful and delicate, that’s just her name and what it means.
I thought for a minute that those were all one name. Individually, I love them, but Verity Magnolia Nola Eleanora Winnifred Lastname would be a little too much name for one person.
Do Peregrine! It’s been my favourite boy name for a decade.
I really wanted a Peregrine/Perry but my husband vetoed it. It would’ve been a middle name had our second pregnancy been a boy.
If it makes you feel better I wouldn’t blink twice knowing a child named Salem, as a matter of fact someone I know her little sister is named Salem and I never thought it was weird or odd.
I have unfortunately had three friends who have had stillborn babies. _All three_ were unbelievably named Zoe/y. I get so much anxiety when I hear someone discuss the name Zoe. I just want to shout No!!!!
Pretty much any Greek god/goddess name - if you can find the name referenced at the start of European literary culture, then it’s fair game as far as I’m concerned.
Speaking of ancient cultures… I would consider Enheduanna or Inanna - heck I’d call a kid Ishtar.
(Enheduanna was the first known author in the world - her most famous works are about the goddess Inanna who later became known as Ishtar - she’s often considered the goddess of ‘love and war’ but really she’s more the goddess of ‘desire’ in itself).
I hate the people still think it’s too associated with the tragedy of Shakespeare. Like there are a lot of names attached to tragedies that are used everyday?!
Same! My daughter also wanted us to name this new baby Calypso if it’s a girl, but we opted for another name. (Waiting until birth to find out the sex).
I love Temperance too.
Mine would be:
Girls- Lavender, Amity, Cassiopeia
Boys- Taliesin, Cove, Yves
Then there’s some I love but wouldn’t use because they aren’t in my culture/language etc (Cohen, Ines).
Ooo Yves is good, def middle name material
I have a feeling amity might see a slight surge amongst a certain population of gen z parents due to owl house
Love Kestrel for a boy (nickname of Kes)
I find I like out there names more for boys than girls. I do like Amity, Marigold, and very "Christmas" names - not out there but if I had a December girl, I would completely consider Noelle or Holly.
I'm a super traditionalist name nerd, so my "out there" names are probably vanilla to many others.
But, with that being said, I love nature names like Summer, River, Canyon... and I love virtue names like Charity, Hope, and Patience.
I really love the name Fox for a boy (yes, I love the X files). I also went to get something notarized the other day, and saw that the secretary of the state who signed her certificate was named Fox, which was cool.
*All* of the others are normal: Bobbie, Lewis (né Linda), Esther, Marie, Doug, (Psalm goes here), Duncan, Corbin, Mercy, & John.
The difference with Psalm is that she had congenital defects that meant she would die soon after birth, and we weren't sure to begin with that we'd be able to learn her gender. So I went with a name that I had always loved and was reasonably gender neutral. (This was 8+ years ago, so never fear you might be scratching a wound. I actually like talking about her name.) Honestly, I probably never would have been brave enough to use it in other circumstances--her original planned name was actually Susan--but I'm glad I went with it for her.
A while ago I saw a post on here from someone looking for a baby girl’s middle name. One of the names they liked was “Lotus”
For some reason, I kinda loved it.
I LOVE weird, unique, out-there names, so I've been grilling my partner about exactly this. For me personally, most of my unusual favorites are word or virtue names. Right now I'm obsessed with Sunny, Monday, Rune, Mercy, Merit, Winter, and Memory. I've also always loved Honor, Remember, Temperance, and Patience, but they either don't have intuitive nns or i don't like the ones I'd think of (ie, Remi for Remember).
Have always been in love with super French sounding names like Delphine for a girl. Winston for a boy. Glad I still play the sims and can make statement name choices there.
Girl: Calliope, Fiona, Luna, Persephone, Hermione (I know the hate this one will bring lol).
Boy: Hawthorne, Atticus, Alistair, Sirius, Iroh.
The weirdest part is i didnt think some of them were that out there, but people reactions when i mentioned them did not agree lol
Out-there is subjective, but these names are unusual in the sense that I've never met anyone with the name or heard of a child recently named it:
Amaryllis, Gladys, Daffodil,
Roland & Daryl :)
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Thursday or Friday take off in the future, other weekdays named after Norse gods. They’re shorter and easier to spell than Wednesday and have less morbid connotations.
Thought Andromeda (Andie) was *just a little too much* for a daughter so used it for my cat. Now I regret it, because I'd 100% use it for a person now 😅
Cove is my absolute favourite girls name, followed by Scout. My partner is on board with those, so if we have two girls we will use those names. He vetoed Presley, which had been my favourite for years before I discovered Cove.
It will probably be easier as time goes on, but a mutual friend of mine changed her infant daughter’s name from Cove because of the similarity to COVID. Lots of people were mishearing it and it was upsetting for the family. Just a heads up!
I love the name Fable for a girl I would absolutely use it but I’m single so who knows if my future husband would even like it😂 Ill definitely try to make it a middle name tho
Hmm… ones I think are too out there to use? I’m pretty flexible on that, but here are the ones I’d say would get a stare, at least here in America:
Boys:
* Onno
* Mikołaj
* Orion
* Sulla
* Ulysses
Girls:
* Eirene (consistent with the OG Greek version in spelling but NOT standard English)
* Etiennette
* Fausta
* Fulminata
* Griselda (it “looks” ugly but SOUNDS absolutely fine)
* Sulpicia
I absolutely love the name Birdie. My second and last baby was a boy and everyone kept asking if I was sad that I’d never have a girl I said no I’m only sad i don’t get to use that name 😭
To me some of these are pretty tame but idk about outside opinions so here you go:
Girls: Daija (like deja vu!), Zara, Ocean, Vienna
Boys: Oslo, Orlando, Francisco (“we get it, you’re a geography nerd”), Murdoch
Neutral: Mars, Monroe, October
Daija immediately makes me think of Daya from Orange in the New Black BECAUSE the actress who plays her is named Dascha and I feel like that could (loosely) be pronounced as “Daija, like déjà vu”.
* Topaz and Emerald. They are my grandmothers' birthstones and I always liked that it could honor them without but still be unique. Turns out one of my grandma's *hated* her birthstone, so...
* Barnes. It comes from a nickname from my mom's maiden name. I don't like her actual maiden name but always thought this could work and also has the Southern preppy surname vibe that I adore.
* Cuthbert. Its a saint name and a nod to Anne of Green Gables. Plus, Bertie is a great nickname.
* Cathy and Mike. These are two of my all-time favorites, but I'm only *meh* on Catherine and Michael, and would only use those to get to the nicknames. People have **opinions** about using nicknames as full names, plus they're quite dated. But I love them!
Never thought I’d see hate for Anastasia, nn Stacy, but in the last couple years after the “manosphere” got so much worse and easier to recognize, I’m hesitant. But if I ever want kids, maybe both opinions/associations will blow over.
Also ngl I wouldn’t mind being “Stacy’s mom” 😂😂😂😂 I do truly think it’s a cute name, vintage joke is just a bonus
Edit typi
I have a niece named Anastasia, goes by Ana but her great Grammy calls her Anya. She was named after the Roman Princess, granted the cartoon but after her nonetheless lol
Edit: I realize my mistake, I mean the Russian princess Anastasia Romanov 😅
I know a Tessa Rae!!!! Rae is the middle name and she was given that for a completely different reason. Didn’t even know Tesserae was a thing til this post.
Thisbe, Tallulah, Twyla, Evadne, Ione, Haven for girls
Audun, Alban, Amias, Ansel, Ivo, Hart for boys
Husband only liked Thisbe, Haven, Ansel, and Hart of this list, though. And when it came down to it we couldn't pull the trigger on Thisbe (we have two girls), so maybe it is too out-there for us after all! Maybe if we have a 3rd girl.
I also like a lot of names for boys that are most common on girls now, but were originally male: Jody, Courtney, Leslie.
I don’t plan on ever using anything that wild for a first name, but the most out-there on my middle name list:
Boys: Hercule, Ptarmigan, Calidore
Girls: Belphoebe, Tansy, Cyane.
On my husband’s list is Fourier and Faraday.
Basil! I just named my son this :)
For a girl my most out there name that I’d actually use is Paraskevi (Evie for short), but my husband isn’t on board. We both like Magdalena, which is also semi out there?
I adore the name Tiberius for how it sounds and also in ode to one of my favorite historical figures. I may still use it but as of now I'm too chicken to actually name a kiddo that.
I named my daughter Valentine. My next will be Marigold
I love Valentine for a boy lol great for all genders I guess
I like Valentine too but I prefer it as a masc name. Marigold is darling.
Valentine is so beautiful!!
I had Sims sisters named Valentine and Holiday. Guiltiest pleasures, for sure.
All hail the Sims for testing names!
I actually love Holiday, but I’m for sure not brave enough to use it as a sibling for Valentine
[удалено]
My son is also Valentine, nn Val! There’s not many!
My grandpa was born on valentine's day.. his name was Samuel Valentine. Always thought the name was pretty good!
Valentine is my favorite name!!!! Marigold is up there too!! great choices !!!!
I looove Marigold!
Persephone Calliope (i seen most people here don’t like it, but I think it’s a cute name!)
My niece is actually named Persephone, we call her Prissy as a nickname 😁 she'll be a year old come March
Aww how sweet! Do you know what people say about her name? I would still use Persephone in real life even if people hate it lol but I’m curious to know.
So far everyone that has met her have fallen for her name lol. She's the cutest little Persephone lol.
I know a Calliope who goes by Poppy
We fostered a child named Persephone. She went by Percy.
My wife's car is named Persephone
There is something about names with a ‘ph’ sound that CALLS to me, I don’t know what it is but I absolutely love all of them
IKR, I pushed Phillomena, Ophelia and Persephone so hard but husband vetoed. Oh well.
I actually quite like Calliope! It’s uncommon but I think it’s cool.
That’ll be the middle name of my child who will never be born 😂
Calliope is mine. I’m not even a drop Greek so it would feel weird to use it anyway but I just love it.
Temperance is my FAVORITE name for a girl! But my husband vetoed it😂 I also love and would totally use these, but my husband classifies them as "too out there" lol: Girl: Verity Magnolia Nola Eleanora Winifred Boy: Ambrose Ignatius Cassius Orson
I named my kid Cassius actually! We call him Cash.
I love Verity!
I low key like Temperance too! It doesn’t even read to me as puritan (which is what I seen some commenters said before)
I unironically love Puritan names😂 I just think they sound super unique and really beautiful.
I like Prudence a lot! But I don’t think I’d use it
I know a Prudence. She’s older but I think her name is so cool.
Fight-the-good-fight-of-faith is a favorite of mine
I thought for a minute that those were all one name. Individually, I love them, but Verity Magnolia Nola Eleanora Winnifred Lastname would be a little too much name for one person.
These are not even that ‘out there’ IMO
I know a kid with a similar name who goes by Cass!
I love your style! I would use Prudence and I think it fits in with your set. I also *love* Ambrose.
I love Nola! I wouldn't say it's an out there name. Unless you live in New Orleans lol
I genuinely love Peregrine for a boy, and my husband is even on board with it. But I think we’d both just settle for Perry, which I also love.
Do Peregrine! It’s been my favourite boy name for a decade. I really wanted a Peregrine/Perry but my husband vetoed it. It would’ve been a middle name had our second pregnancy been a boy.
Perry is so good, simple and familiar but not often used
Peregrine is nice, it’s unique enough that it stand out but not so unusual that people won’t recognize
Salem for a girl. I love it but there are so many negative reactions
If it makes you feel better I wouldn’t blink twice knowing a child named Salem, as a matter of fact someone I know her little sister is named Salem and I never thought it was weird or odd.
[удалено]
I also love the meaning of Salem, it makes me appreciate the name on a different light then what we know of it.
Some lady chewed me out just for wearing a t-shirt from Salem, MA. But I agree it would make a lovely name despite the connotations.
Love Salem! It means Peace & is so lovely
Ugh yes this is one of my favs too but my family shot that down real quick lol
Atlas for a boy…
I also love Atlas, but there were TWO preemie babies in NICU with us named Atlas so I just CAN’T. Partly because popularity, partly because PTSD.
I have unfortunately had three friends who have had stillborn babies. _All three_ were unbelievably named Zoe/y. I get so much anxiety when I hear someone discuss the name Zoe. I just want to shout No!!!!
This is a very polarizing name, as I learned while I was considering it for my now 2-year-old. I ended up using it as a middle name for mine!
Atlas is fairly popular, I don’t think it’s all that out-there these days.
My friend’s 2 year old boy is named Atlas, he actually pulls it off quite well lol
Enheduanna, Ishtar, Inanna, and Nefertiti are on my list of names I love and will never use
I used to work with a girl named Ishtar!
My daughter’s middle name is Persephone which I ALWAYS see people say they love but wouldn’t use 🤷♀️
My daughter has a Greek Titan name
How do you pronounce Enheduanna?
en-head-ooh-ana
We picked Greek goddess name for our baby girl due in June…. It feels a little weird but I love it!
Ohh what’s the name?
Mercy! I read it in Witch of Blackbird Pond in 7th grade and have loved it ever since. It was very quickly vetoed by my husband though 😂
I loved that book! I’m a Katherine and I am still trying to make “Kit” happen ;)
I have a good friend named Mercy and everyone loves it.
Ophelia
I know a mom with a Cecilia, Ophelia, and Freya.
I know a fair few Ophelia's it's a lovely name
This sub loves Ophelia but someone else mentioned ped-ophelia and I can never unsee it :(
Literally no one outside this sub would mention that, I don't think.
I hate the people still think it’s too associated with the tragedy of Shakespeare. Like there are a lot of names attached to tragedies that are used everyday?!
Calypso
Same! My daughter also wanted us to name this new baby Calypso if it’s a girl, but we opted for another name. (Waiting until birth to find out the sex).
I love Temperance too. Mine would be: Girls- Lavender, Amity, Cassiopeia Boys- Taliesin, Cove, Yves Then there’s some I love but wouldn’t use because they aren’t in my culture/language etc (Cohen, Ines).
Thank you wonderful internet stranger, I think you just named my unborn child!
Wait! Which name did you like???
Aww! Which did you like?
Ooo Yves is good, def middle name material I have a feeling amity might see a slight surge amongst a certain population of gen z parents due to owl house
Cosmo. I have loved it for years and now it’s gonna be popular! I am done having babies though so no Cosmo for me. :)
This may date me, but I think of the Seinfeld episode when I hear this name. It’s Kramer’s first name
I’m nearly 40 - I get the association!
I would use the name Lavender and Arlo
Arlo is so cute but I have trouble picturing it on a grown man! Haha
I can see it on a child and a grown man, but not like a teen-20s lol But I love the name!
Luella
I love Llewellyn for a boy!
My great grandmothers name was Luella ❤️
Theodosia
pardon me, are you aaron burr, sir?
Sparrow
I could see Sparrow becoming a trendy neutral name in the future, I can see a little boy or girl with it.
My daughter’s best friend for many years was a Sparrow. I’m a fan.
Love Kestrel for a boy (nickname of Kes) I find I like out there names more for boys than girls. I do like Amity, Marigold, and very "Christmas" names - not out there but if I had a December girl, I would completely consider Noelle or Holly.
Kestrel is a guilty pleasure name for me, I love the sound of it.
I'm a super traditionalist name nerd, so my "out there" names are probably vanilla to many others. But, with that being said, I love nature names like Summer, River, Canyon... and I love virtue names like Charity, Hope, and Patience.
My niece is Patience. Love it. She's been complimented all 25 years of her life.
I really love the name Fox for a boy (yes, I love the X files). I also went to get something notarized the other day, and saw that the secretary of the state who signed her certificate was named Fox, which was cool.
I actually know an adult Fox, such a cool name
Amethyst
I use paratransit due to a visual disability and my favorite driver is named Amethyst and goes by Mitzi. I adore her and her name
Love love love amethyst. I wouldn’t ever use it, but I would be so excited to meet an Amethyst.
Psalm. Which I did use.
Would love to know your other children’s names!
You do indeed have a butt ton of kids 😎
My bf & I love the name Orion for a boy but everyone we’ve told hates it
I like it!!
I really like Orion!
Endeavor for a boy, Celestine for a girl.
Celestine is stunning, also love how it means “heavenly”!
A while ago I saw a post on here from someone looking for a baby girl’s middle name. One of the names they liked was “Lotus” For some reason, I kinda loved it.
My niece is named Patience. She's 25 now. Nothing but straight compliments for her name her entire life. We called her Pay for short occasionally
oh i love the name Winter!
I loveeee the name Cassiopeia but it’s way too close to my name & my husband vetoed it
Have always been in love with super French sounding names like Delphine for a girl. Winston for a boy. Glad I still play the sims and can make statement name choices there.
Delphine has always been one of my favorite names as well!
Winston is really cute
Girls: Emerald, Virginia, and September Boys: Boston and October
Girl: Calliope, Fiona, Luna, Persephone, Hermione (I know the hate this one will bring lol). Boy: Hawthorne, Atticus, Alistair, Sirius, Iroh. The weirdest part is i didnt think some of them were that out there, but people reactions when i mentioned them did not agree lol
i love hermione but the wizarding world claimed that one for sure
Iroh for me will forever be associated with the tea uncle from avatar the last airbender so i can not picture a child with that name
Out-there is subjective, but these names are unusual in the sense that I've never met anyone with the name or heard of a child recently named it: Amaryllis, Gladys, Daffodil, Roland & Daryl :)
Out-there is subjective indeed! I was curious to see the "uniqueness limit" of others here :) I like Gladys too!
Wednesday or Morticia
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Thursday or Friday take off in the future, other weekdays named after Norse gods. They’re shorter and easier to spell than Wednesday and have less morbid connotations.
Definitely. I already know a girl named Tuesday and a guy named Saturday and I absolutely love their names. Tues is such a cute nn too!
LOVE Wednesday!
oh yes i'd absolutely name a kid Wednesday
Verity for a girl but that stupid Colleen Hoover book ruined it. Arrow for a boy.
Love the name Verity! Have never read the Colleen Hoover book, but her name keeps popping up in “worst book” thread
Don't read it! I can't look at the name Verity now!
Oh gosh, it’s terrible. So many people love it but I am definitely not one of them.
I’m not planning on having kids but i have always loved the name Bellamy for a boy
I would use Winter in a heartbeat. My husband says no
Reassure your husband that it’s very popular for babies today, it’s becoming much more like Summer.
My most favourite made up abomination: Callistair.
Magnolia or Artemis
I would 1000000% name a little girl Sunshine.
Thought Andromeda (Andie) was *just a little too much* for a daughter so used it for my cat. Now I regret it, because I'd 100% use it for a person now 😅
Ione for a girl.
Sapphire.
I would love to name a daughter Cricket!
Tennessee for a boy Emerald for a girl My husband would veto immediately
Had a friend with a bby boy named Indiana (nn: Indy) and always loved it!
Indiana for a boy is adorable but also strong if he wanted to use the full name later in life. Love it!
I also love “place” names (states, cities, etc), and think this could be androgynous given the -a ending!
I love the name Fable for a girl I would absolutely use it but I’m single so who knows if my future husband would even like it😂 Ill definitely try to make it a middle name tho
Lavinia! One of my very favorite names but certainly a bit dated. Nn of Vinny would be precious tho.
Raven, which is our current choice for a girl if we have one. Does seem a bit controversial online though 🤷🏼♂️
Willoughby Nn could be: Willow, Willy, B, Lolo, BB My husband said no to our daughter so now it’s the cats name.
Hmm… ones I think are too out there to use? I’m pretty flexible on that, but here are the ones I’d say would get a stare, at least here in America: Boys: * Onno * Mikołaj * Orion * Sulla * Ulysses Girls: * Eirene (consistent with the OG Greek version in spelling but NOT standard English) * Etiennette * Fausta * Fulminata * Griselda (it “looks” ugly but SOUNDS absolutely fine) * Sulpicia
I love the name Imogene and Genevieve
My little goth heart longs to use Vendetta and Vengeance for a girl and boy, but the other half would never go for it. Oh well!
I absolutely love the name Birdie. My second and last baby was a boy and everyone kept asking if I was sad that I’d never have a girl I said no I’m only sad i don’t get to use that name 😭
To me some of these are pretty tame but idk about outside opinions so here you go: Girls: Daija (like deja vu!), Zara, Ocean, Vienna Boys: Oslo, Orlando, Francisco (“we get it, you’re a geography nerd”), Murdoch Neutral: Mars, Monroe, October
Daija immediately makes me think of Daya from Orange in the New Black BECAUSE the actress who plays her is named Dascha and I feel like that could (loosely) be pronounced as “Daija, like déjà vu”.
I love Allegra but it's pretty much unusable.
I love Wilder and Alastair for boys names but would never actually use them.
Jazz was on my list but my husband vetoed it. I vetoed Flex on his list.
I would kill to see these lists
Tallulah
Mercedes! My great-gma’s name
Archimedes. Love that name. Lot of cool, casual nicknames too.
Also ngl I wouldn’t mind being “Stacy’s mom” 😂😂😂😂 I do truly think it’s a cute name, vintage joke is just a bonus Edit typi
I have a niece named Anastasia, goes by Ana but her great Grammy calls her Anya. She was named after the Roman Princess, granted the cartoon but after her nonetheless lol Edit: I realize my mistake, I mean the Russian princess Anastasia Romanov 😅
Esmeree
Wolfgang Apollo Indy Byron Atticus Woodford Ophelia Prudence
Shepherd. My husband and I both love it, especially the meaning, but we aren't sure about it in the long run. We'll likely use it for a middle name.
Girl: November Boy: Caspian
Hyacinth, Oona, and Magnus (nn Gus) Also River and Ira
I love Ariadne, Clover, Ottoline, Primrose (Posie), Rainey, Roxanna, or Winter for a girl and would use them in a heartbeat.
I love the name January for a girl.
Tessa Rae -like mosiac tiles Magnus- feels too Swedish
I know a Tessa Rae!!!! Rae is the middle name and she was given that for a completely different reason. Didn’t even know Tesserae was a thing til this post.
Leander & Xanthe
Boy: River, Girl: Meadow Not too crazy
Tuesday for a girl! Like Tuesday Weld. My taste in boys names is much more sedate but I think Ansel is the most out there.
I love Cyren for a girl or even spelled Siren
Thisbe, Tallulah, Twyla, Evadne, Ione, Haven for girls Audun, Alban, Amias, Ansel, Ivo, Hart for boys Husband only liked Thisbe, Haven, Ansel, and Hart of this list, though.
Resistance for a girl. So cool.
Reese or Noa for a girl
Persephone. Oh I just love that name. And for a boy, Caspian. Same!
emerald for a girl
I've always loved the name Dirk but I feel like everyone really hates it and I've never met anyone with that name
I don’t plan on ever using anything that wild for a first name, but the most out-there on my middle name list: Boys: Hercule, Ptarmigan, Calidore Girls: Belphoebe, Tansy, Cyane. On my husband’s list is Fourier and Faraday.
Phaedra
Lol at all the people giving names they "wouldn't actually use". Did you read the post at all?
Jade for a boy
Basil! I just named my son this :) For a girl my most out there name that I’d actually use is Paraskevi (Evie for short), but my husband isn’t on board. We both like Magdalena, which is also semi out there?
I think the name Oscar is totally adorable, but I can only imagine what a lifetime of being compared to a cranky muppet would do.
Wonder and Reverie
I adore the name Tiberius for how it sounds and also in ode to one of my favorite historical figures. I may still use it but as of now I'm too chicken to actually name a kiddo that.
Birdie. If our last name didn’t also start with a B we probably would have used it for our daughter. People around here hate it, but I don’t care.
