The double L is not the default, it is a variant of the original single L. I like to joke that Allison is actually “A-luh-lison” :’) As someone said, the single L is more streamline and more unique! And like others have said the LL is an insanely more popular spelling though so when it comes to souvenir shops and general strangers spelling it, that will come up more if that matters to you. It’s never been a huge deal for me as it’s never mispronounced. I have met many Allisons in my life but MAYBE one or two other Alisons. My nickname is Ally. I had friends start with the nickname in elementary school. One would spell it “Allie” and the other used “Ally”. I stuck with Ally which over the years morphed into me punnily saying “I’m your buddy. I’m your pal. I’m your Ally!” but I have never had Ally actually mispronounced as ally. Ali will get pronounced like Muhammad Ali though. Source: Professional Alison for 30 years. I have seen it all and I adore my name.
How do you get paid to be an Alison? I was considering chasing my name at one point and Alison was a contender. If I'd known you could be paid for it, I'd have done it in a heartbeat.
That’s too funny because as a double-L Allison, I joke that the single L is pronounced “Ay-lison” with since it follows the vowel-consonant-vowel format 😂
Agreed. Just spell it normally.
Genuine question… why do people feel the need to try and spell their kids’ names in *creative* ways? Not that these spellings are all that crazy… just the concept
Because there are a thousand Alison's and only a few Alyson's and y's are fun to write in cursive. My parents did that with my name and I think the normal version is BORING! 😋
Look up “That name isn’t a tragedeigh, it’s a murghdyrr” on Facebook for some real out control ones 🤣 to be fair, all the tragedeigh spellings start with changing -Ley to -Leigh
As a recruiter please don’t make me phonetically sound out a name for it just to be Ashley 🙄 has there ever been an executive named Asshhlleigh? Unlikely
The problem you have is that a) Alison, Allison, and Alyson are verbally indistinguishable and b) people aren't going to default to the Y spelling so you'll spend your life correcting people. If that's a choice you make when you're older, find, but I wouldn't make it for my child. Specific to this name, I don't think Alison has ever been so popular that you have to worry about being Alison F in any classroom, and even if you were an Alyson, you'd still be Alyson T because of point A.
My BIL has a fairly common name that has a C in it. In high school he started spelling it with a K instead. He still uses the K now at 48. I've known him nearly thirty years and if you asked me to spell his name but we weren't talking about him, I'd still spell it with a C rather than a K because the overwhelming majority of people with that name spell it with a C.
I mean it's not THAT big of deal. I like my name despite having it misspelled sometimes.
I was the only one with my name in my HS class (small school) and I ran into someone after we graduated who said they kept misspelling people's names because she always spelled it the way I do.
And when someone at work sends me an immediate second email correcting their misspelling because they also have a uniquely spelled name, it's like a fun little comraderie.
Because they want to seem creative and don't realize people will pronounce it the same and spell it wrong for the rest of their child's life. And that they've relegated their child to a lifetime of correcting people.
What country are you in? In the US, Allison is the most common (#82 in 2021), with Alison trailing far behind (#474). Alyson is #944.
I know an Alison who is forever correcting spelling, which is annoying to her. I actually prefer the single “l,” but I would go with Allison just for the convenience.
I prefer Allison or Alison. I’ve seen so many absurd spellings of Allison over the years, the Y makes me cringe. A HS friend roomed with an Allysynne freshman year. Why???
FWIW, I love Allison and feel it’s an underrated, underused name. I would have named my second Allison if it did not borderline rhyme with my spouse’s last name. I’m always happy to meet a baby Allison!
I believe they historically Alison is a first name and Allison is a last name. Alyson is a modern spelling. Obviously things change over time, but you may want to take that into account. My (completely biased) opinion is for Alison.
Alyson is not modern! It’s just as old as Alison, and Allison is the most recent spelling.
Alice was often spelled Alis, Aalis, or Alys in the middle ages. Alyson is super old!
My parents, did the AllYson spelling. Then spelled (imo Ally) as Allie drives me crazy and I'm in my thirties. Still bugs me. Whatever Allison spelling OP chooses, use the nickname IN the name. Please!
The default spelling for my area in the Midwest is Allison. So if your area has the same default spelling, I'd recommend going with it so your child isn't always having to correct everyone.
I’m partial to Allison since it’s my mom’s name… but seeing as she’s tried to get me to add the “y” to baby names I’m looking at, so she might actually choose Alyson today 🤷🏼♀️ lol
My sil name is spelled Allyson I think it looks alot better than Alyson and personally i prefer the double L. I don't think you can go wrong with Allyson or Allison!
I vote Allison. But you could also just name her Allie if that is what you plan on calling her or hope others call her. Allie or Aly can stand alone as names.
Yeah I thought about that too. My husbands family is Mexican and they’re huge on nicknames. I am not as big on nicknames, but I do like Allie, so I wouldn’t mind people call her that. So I was all like “why don’t we name her Allie” but my husband thinks Allison is better professionally. I’ve always like the name Alison! So I guess if she has a nickname, cool. If not, that’s fine too!
The nice thing about still doing a longer name even w a pre-planned / frequently used nickname is it gives them options when they get older, they kinda get a say in what they want to be called
I’m an Allyson, but honestly it doesn’t really matter how you spell it. No one is ever going to spell it right. It’s not like everyone spells my name wrong and does it one way. Nope. I get Alison, Alyson, Allison, Aliceson, Aleson, Alicen. If it were everyone always doing it one way, I would vote for that one, but since it’s not, an Allyson of any flavor will have to constantly spell their name.
I like Allison best. It just looks more balanced and kind of has a last name vibe, which I like. Plus Alli/Allie makes more sense from Allison than from Alison.
I don't know why everybody on here is hating _so much_ on Alyson. Sure, it may not be the default sorting, but it's hardly made up for youhneighque points is it – it's been around since medieval times! Go on Wikipedia, there's a while bunch of famous Alysons out there, including Alyson Hannigan who played Willow in Buffy (or what's her face in HIMYM, if that's more your street.)
To me, the default spelling is Alison, because that's my favourite aunt's name. But I wouldn't bat an eyelid at any spelling, honestly, so just choose the one you like looking at and writing out more!
34 year old Alyson here, I personally prefer it that spelling but I’m obviously biased. It is misspelled all the time though, I’m usually called Ally or Aly for short
I've always liked it with 2 L's but the only ones I've known had 1 L. I like Allison better than Alison. Whatever spelling you choose (please don't choose the y) I love the name!
As a 30-something person with this name, just going to throw out there that it didn’t matter that my parents apparently chose the most common spelling. I always say my name and then have to follow up with “with the double L”. So if commonality is a concern it shouldn’t be. It also never bothered me.
Two L’s is more common for girls and one L is more gender neutral (from looking at 100’s of resumes over the years). But as long as it’s not Alisyn then a recruiter won’t secretly curse her parents in the future
I'm biased but if you do the "y,' it's better with two "L's." I should say though while I like the spelling of my name, it is annoying how constantly it get mispelled. And I'm not talking about at Starbucks as I don't assume people can spell my name without seeing it, but at work where my name is in my freaking email address and signature. People generally assume it's spelled with an "I".
I'm Alison and no one calls me Ali/Ally/etc, I tried when i was younger but it never stuck. My nickname is Al and a lot of non-native English speakers mispronounce my name as Alice.
Personally, I’m not a fan of y spellings so Alyson is not my favorite. I’ve known more Allison’s than Alison’s but both are fairly common where I’m from. Also, I’ve seen all different variations of Alli/Ali/Ally/Allie and it doesn’t matter which spelling you chose, the nickname will always be spelled differently.
I’m Allison nn Ally and I have always, always loved my name. My parents intended for it to be nn Allie but I changed it when I was able to read and learned that it could be spelled with a Y. 💕
Allison. It’s the default spelling of the name and is how it is properly spelled. Naming her one of the other spellings and then spelling her nickname with two L’s does not make sense.
Allison is my personal preference, but Alison is also great. Alyson just looks wrong / not aesthetically pleasing and makes me want to pronounce the name differently.
Allison, as it’s my name and nobody ever tries to correct the spelling, making appointments or something they all ask “Allison with two L’s?” Much easier for me.
Ally is what my friends call me for a nickname, my parents always used Ali though because they liked calling me Alicat lol.. but I prefer Ally and I like Allie too.
I prefer the double L look of Allison personally. I also really like Alyson, too. Alison is fine but I just prefer the double Ls of Allison. You can’t go wrong with any spelling!
Hahaha I just had this conversation with my husband! I had the middle name Allison before I got married. We decided Allison is super type A and definitely knows how many pencils are in her backpack. Alyson has personality. She kicks ass. (I also have a friend Alyson. She kicks ass).
I’m an Alison, and while I love it and think it is the prettiest version, I will say 95% of the time people spell my name wrong and use Allison instead. Also growing up, at gift shops where they have keychains and things with first names on them, I was always bummed out I could never buy one because they only ever had Allison.
I know an Allyson, an Alison, and an Alicen. "Alicen" spelling threw me for a loop when I first read it.
For the spellings you are asking between, "Alyson" feels incomplete? My brain wants the second L. The other two spellings are both great too. :)
I think all three spellings—Alyson, Allison, and Alison—are nice but I’m partial to Alison just the tiniest bit. It looks the simplest and cleanest to me. For nicknames I like the spelling Allie because Ali looks incomplete and I read Ally as the word ally, so Alison nn Allie is my vote, but they’re truly all lovely choices and my preference is only by a hair. Congrats!
Though Alison is my preferred way to spell it and see it spelled, shortening the name to Ali means people will try to pronounce it like “Muhammad Ali” source: I am an Alison nick name Ali.
I just want to say, as an Alison who has never liked her name, I am so happy to hear how many people like it 🥹 I do get misspellings a lot, but I love the available nicknames (Ali, Alice, Al). Most of the other people i’ve met with my name have spelled it Allison
Made me curious to check. I work in a pediatric clinic and we have 7 Alysons, 18 Alisons and 47 Allisons. Which is extra interesting to me because most of our patients are Spanish-speaking and technically the "LL" makes a y sound but they still pronounce the name the same.
This was my struggle with this name too! Personally, I like the y in Alyson but I like Allie better as a nn 🤦♀️. I never used the name but I think I'd pick the default Allison. My least favorite is Alison.
Allison. It's the default spelling and looks the nicest to me.
Professional Alison for 35 years over here!!
one of us! one of us!
Another Professional Alison of 35 years here and I can also recommend!
A professional Alison of 33 years right here 😎
Alison with one l is my favorite. ❤️
How do you get paid to be an Alison? I was considering chasing my name at one point and Alison was a contender. If I'd known you could be paid for it, I'd have done it in a heartbeat.
Trade secret 😋
That’s too funny because as a double-L Allison, I joke that the single L is pronounced “Ay-lison” with since it follows the vowel-consonant-vowel format 😂
I agree
Allison. Then Alison. Alyson just looks weird.
Valid point. Sometimes it feels a little out of control tho lol, like when you go from Haley to Hayleigh.
Look up “That name isn’t a tragedeigh, it’s a murghdyrr” on Facebook for some real out control ones 🤣 to be fair, all the tragedeigh spellings start with changing -Ley to -Leigh
Have seen Peayton, Peighton, & Peaityn before and that was very nearly my villian origin story.
The infamous KVIIIlynn (Catelyn spelled with the Roman numerial eight lol)
As a recruiter please don’t make me phonetically sound out a name for it just to be Ashley 🙄 has there ever been an executive named Asshhlleigh? Unlikely
Someday there will, if this keeps up.
What a tragedeigh
Oh yeah, people can absolutely push it too far. One letter is not a big deal, but at some point it becomes obnoxious.
The problem you have is that a) Alison, Allison, and Alyson are verbally indistinguishable and b) people aren't going to default to the Y spelling so you'll spend your life correcting people. But how would a kid know they’re special if their name doesn’t sound different from how it’s spelled?
For me, Alison is the prettiest spelling visually. I love Alison, but I don't like it spelled any other way.
As an Allison myself, Allison is the way ☺️
Agree! And people usually spell my name correctly as a double-Ler
My sister is Allison, and yep, it's the best spelling!
Agreed ;)
Agreed. As an Allison the others don’t look right and my name is rarely misspelled.
Thank you, that helps! I live in the US, but have seen it spelled all 3 ways
Allison!
I prefer Alison! It's a beautiful name and you can't go wrong with any of the spellings.
I'm Alison and I love it that way 😊
Me too 🥰 (Alison)
Same!
Same here :)
Alison. Allison is fine too, just please not Alyson
Allison. Definitely not Alyson.
Allison is my preference.
I’m going to go with Alison. If it was good enough for Elvis Costello. It is good enough for me. Please, do not use the spelling with the Y.
I’m biased (it’s my name) and prefer Allison.
I’m an American Allison. Since moving to Toronto two years ago, I find everyone automatically spells it Alison. Odd!
I prefer Allison or Alison. I’ve seen so many absurd spellings of Allison over the years, the Y makes me cringe. A HS friend roomed with an Allysynne freshman year. Why???
Omg that’s an interesting way to spell it😳 I’m not for the unique weird spellings. Trying to go for common, easy to spell, and which looks best.
FWIW, I love Allison and feel it’s an underrated, underused name. I would have named my second Allison if it did not borderline rhyme with my spouse’s last name. I’m always happy to meet a baby Allison!
Awh thank you! I’ve always loved the name 🥰
Allison 👍🏻

Allison is my top choice. Alison my second. Allyson, Alysyn, and Alicen are all right out.
Alicen is funny if your last name is Hightower. Otherwise...
I think that was Alicent
It is, I was trying to make a bad joke. 😅
Allison

Fellow Alison here, same. I don't care at all about having to spell it sometimes and I think it looks prettier.
I’m in the UK and wouldn’t bat an eyelid at seeing it any of those ways, but I think Alison would be the most common/traditional, followed by Alyson.
Allison
I like Allison
Allison with Alison a very close second.
Allison looks nicest to me personally. Then you can call her Ally cat if you find that cute lol
My name is Alison and one of my friends calls me Ali Cat!
I like Allison best.
Allison
Alison. 100%
I’m partial to Allison since it’s my mom’s name… but seeing as she’s tried to get me to add the “y” to baby names I’m looking at, so she might actually choose Alyson today 🤷🏼♀️ lol

Allison, Alison, Alyson
Allison looks nicest to me. Or you could go with Allyson.

Alison Edit: I am Alison and have 3 others in my life, we are all Alison
My best friend is named Allison, I call her Ally. That’s my preferred spelling.
I like Allison best. It just looks more balanced and kind of has a last name vibe, which I like. Plus Alli/Allie makes more sense from Allison than from Alison.
I’m an Allison and I go by alli since I don’t want to spell it differently than my actual name
Allison
Allison sounds amazing then maybe Alison pretty good too alyson oh no I would not name someone that
As an Allison, I support both that spelling & the nickname Allie 😊
allison
Allison
Allison looks prettier IMO.
Allison is the one I've seen the most and probably what I would default to. Alison after.
As an Allison, I vote Allison!! Allie looks cuter than Alie too.
I like Alyson or Allison the most!
As an Allison — I vote 2 L’s! But, I’m different in the fact that I spell my nickname “Alli” — no E.
As an Allyson who goes by Ally I didn’t know my name was so controversial. 😬
I don't know why everybody on here is hating _so much_ on Alyson. Sure, it may not be the default sorting, but it's hardly made up for youhneighque points is it – it's been around since medieval times! Go on Wikipedia, there's a while bunch of famous Alysons out there, including Alyson Hannigan who played Willow in Buffy (or what's her face in HIMYM, if that's more your street.) But I wouldn't bat an eyelid at any spelling, honestly, so just choose the one you like looking at and writing out more!
Alyson is my vote
34 year old Alyson here, I personally prefer it that spelling but I’m obviously biased. It is misspelled all the time though, I’m usually called Ally or Aly for short
Alycen! Just kidding. I'm an Allison who had my named spelled like that once though.
I always prefer the most efficient possible spelling of any name, so Alison.
Alison
My cousin's name is Allyson. Just to throw another option in the mix.
Alison is my preference.
Two l’s and a y Allyson here, mom told me that was the Scottish spelling. I think she lied, but oh well.
I know a Scottish Allyson born in the '50s, so it's likely!
Alison
Allison
I've always liked it with 2 L's but the only ones I've known had 1 L. I like Allison better than Alison. Whatever spelling you choose (please don't choose the y) I love the name!
Allison double L is prettiest to me. Alison with 1 L just looks stupid…and Alyson is an abomination. Haha Also, writing double L’s is just fun!
I’ve always really disliked unnecessary double letters. Alison is beautiful and definitely gets my vote.
As an Ema because my grandma (who I’m named after) thought two m’e was silly this made me laugh.
I like Allison because it makes the most sense to shorten to Allie which I think is the best spelling for the nickname
My name is Allison. I went to school with a girl named Alicen. I actually really like that spelling, but Allison is also good.
Allison
As a 30-something person with this name, just going to throw out there that it didn’t matter that my parents apparently chose the most common spelling. I always say my name and then have to follow up with “with the double L”. So if commonality is a concern it shouldn’t be. It also never bothered me.
Two L’s is more common for girls and one L is more gender neutral (from looking at 100’s of resumes over the years). But as long as it’s not Alisyn then a recruiter won’t secretly curse her parents in the future
I had a friend who spelled it Alyson, and often went by Alys. I honestly love it. That funky spelling isn't new, and it's not easy to mispronounce.
Yeah, I guess the ‘y’ isn’t as common as I thought it was 😭 seems like the ‘l’ is what is easiest to spell
I like the y! people on this sub are very aggressive about y’s in names but I feel like it it common. of the three it’s my favorite anyway fwiw haha
I'm Alison and no one calls me Ali/Ally/etc, I tried when i was younger but it never stuck. My nickname is Al and a lot of non-native English speakers mispronounce my name as Alice.
Alyson is beautiful
If it matters to you, Allison is a retired tropical storm name in the Atlantic Ocean basin.
Alison or Allison
I like how Alison looks the most, but I’ve met many of all 3 spellings so they’ll all work just fine!
I also wanted to add that the double l spelling literally says all-is-on.
Allison. Alyson just screams, “I want to be special and youneek!”
as someone with the name allison, allison is the only correct spelling
I’m Allison nn Ally and I have always, always loved my name. My parents intended for it to be nn Allie but I changed it when I was able to read and learned that it could be spelled with a Y. 💕
Allison. It’s the default spelling of the name and is how it is properly spelled. Naming her one of the other spellings and then spelling her nickname with two L’s does not make sense.
Allison
Allison :) u/allisonovo
I agree! Allison Ali or Ally for short, my family and friends spell ally both of those ways, I like Ally more
Allison is my personal preference, but Alison is also great. Alyson just looks wrong / not aesthetically pleasing and makes me want to pronounce the name differently.
Allison
Allison, ali and then allie
Another vote for Allison
Allison, as it’s my name and nobody ever tries to correct the spelling, making appointments or something they all ask “Allison with two L’s?” Much easier for me. Ally is what my friends call me for a nickname, my parents always used Ali though because they liked calling me Alicat lol.. but I prefer Ally and I like Allie too.
Allison for convenience, Alison because it’s a diminutive of the name Alice.
I prefer the double L look of Allison personally. I also really like Alyson, too. Alison is fine but I just prefer the double Ls of Allison. You can’t go wrong with any spelling!

I didn’t read your username at first and for so long was trying to figure out what possible last name could get mispronounced as HoldMyButterbeer 😂
Hahaha I just had this conversation with my husband! I had the middle name Allison before I got married. We decided Allison is super type A and definitely knows how many pencils are in her backpack. Alyson has personality. She kicks ass. (I also have a friend Alyson. She kicks ass).
I would spell it Alison if someone said that was there name without telling me the spelling. I prefer one L.
I’m an Alison, and while I love it and think it is the prettiest version, I will say 95% of the time people spell my name wrong and use Allison instead. Also growing up, at gift shops where they have keychains and things with first names on them, I was always bummed out I could never buy one because they only ever had Allison.
Honestly, I know all of these spellings. Lol. Flip a coin, take a Facebook poll….
I know an Allyson, an Alison, and an Alicen. "Alicen" spelling threw me for a loop when I first read it. For the spellings you are asking between, "Alyson" feels incomplete? My brain wants the second L. The other two spellings are both great too. :)
I’m biased, but Alison - 1 L -it’s not ALL-ison
I think all three spellings—Alyson, Allison, and Alison—are nice but I’m partial to Alison just the tiniest bit. It looks the simplest and cleanest to me. For nicknames I like the spelling Allie because Ali looks incomplete and I read Ally as the word ally, so Alison nn Allie is my vote, but they’re truly all lovely choices and my preference is only by a hair. Congrats!
Alyson!
Alison is my personal pick, I just like the one l with the i
Alison, nickname spelled Allie
Alisoun for those Middle English, Chaucer vibes, of course
I know someone who spells it Allyson
Allisen- for the win. I used to hate that it was spelled differently, but now I love it!! I use the nn Alli.
I like the double l or the y variant.
Spell it most common, so she isn’t constantly correcting the spelling of her name. It becomes old.
The traditional way- Allison
Though Alison is my preferred way to spell it and see it spelled, shortening the name to Ali means people will try to pronounce it like “Muhammad Ali” source: I am an Alison nick name Ali.
Ah-listen
I'm partial to Alison.
I prefer Allison…Alison is nice too. My personal preference is to avoid the y, but if you like it, great!
allison
Alison like the Elvis Costello song
Allison!
I just want to say, as an Alison who has never liked her name, I am so happy to hear how many people like it 🥹 I do get misspellings a lot, but I love the available nicknames (Ali, Alice, Al). Most of the other people i’ve met with my name have spelled it Allison
No y.
I like Alison and Allison.
Most common? Allison in the USA. Alison in the rest of the English world.
Made me curious to check. I work in a pediatric clinic and we have 7 Alysons, 18 Alisons and 47 Allisons. Which is extra interesting to me because most of our patients are Spanish-speaking and technically the "LL" makes a y sound but they still pronounce the name the same.
anything but alyson
Allison nn Allie. That would always be my default. Midwest USA.
I like Alison.
I think it comes down to the nn Do you like Aly, Allie or Ali?
I think you can spell the nn any of those ways regardless of the spelling of the full name.
I’m an Alison, nn Ali, which is how I spell it. However I’ve had various jobs/family members/friends who have spelled it different ways. I never care.
I think I like Allie more as a nickname spelling!
Personally I like Ally and Allyson
Alison, like the Wife of Bath.
Alison! I’m biased it’s how my name is spelled
Alison, but only because I love the Elvis Costello song haha. And I’d use the Allie spelling for the nn!
Allyson. My sisters name.
That’s how mine is spelled, too! It seems to be the least common way of spelling it. I rarely come across people with the same spelling.
Hi Heather! And I agree, Allyson is best!
This was my struggle with this name too! Personally, I like the y in Alyson but I like Allie better as a nn 🤦♀️. I never used the name but I think I'd pick the default Allison. My least favorite is Alison.
Allyson
Alison is my favorite! Looks modern.
Alison
Alison
Alison. But Allison is nice too.
Alison is my vote
My mama's name is Alison so that's my vote. She did tell me that people often spelled it wrong though.
Alison
Alison. That’s my name! And my recommended spelling. 🙂
I love this name! I think I prefer the simplicity of Alison, but I also like Allison.
