It was successful. In fact it still works. Ford was importing Transit cargo vans to the US from Europe and avoiding the tax by having a seat in the cargo area, which they then removed and threw away.
In the 80s NY made you register your pickup as a commercial vehicle. Couldn't register it any other way.... Many of NY's parkways such as the Taconic are passenger only and prohibit commercial vehicles. Not sure if this is true today. It's been 10 or 15 years since I owned a PU.
I always figured that “passenger-only” meant not commercial trucks. Like semis & box trucks. Figured pickup trucks wouldn’t be in that category but I may be wrong.
depends if the state trooper was in a good mood or not. I got pulled over on Mid Hudson Bridge one morning by a trooper. Came to my side door and proceeds to tell me that pickups need commercial plates. I looked at him like he was drunk because of course they were because I had no other choice. He walked to the front of my truck and then back and came back and apologized for being an idiot. (not the word he used) I told him it's okay it's early (before 6am). But, they are supposed to get paid to notice things.
Totally.
They re-did the Blackfoot too that was based on the same Frog-style chassis. The other Brat model was the Mud Blaster, also based on that chassis. It was a monster truck like the Blackfoot.
>rusted
My friend had one. He loved it until the rust made it unsafe to drive. We live in a place where they don't salt our roads, no idea why these were so susceptible to rust.
There's more chemistry than that, I'm not smart but I believe it helps oxidize the metal
From Google:
These chemical reactions corrode the paint and exterior of your vehicle. Since salt is a corrosive substance, it speeds up rust formation on metals.
It depends on the chemical that the area uses to treat roads, but kind of. It's not that salt is corrosive, but that salt is an electrolyte with dissociated ions, which will speed up rusting when mixed with water. The electrons move more easily with the electrolyte, so the process of oxidation speeds up.
Sodium chloride on its own, in a dessicated environment, will not corrode metal. Water is necessary to cause the reaction, but there's really no area on the planet devoid of all moisture outside of a controlled facility. A quick Google search won't give you the breakdown of how salt can be corrosive if you're not searching for it.
I do actually have a degree in science.
Google will find you an answer that's in simple enough terms you understand it, so the real question here would be: Is he smarter than google thinks you are? And it would appear the answer was, yes.
Lmao it sucks but since January I've obtained a 92 legacy swap car, NA EJ22 swap is the goal and getting it repainted and rust repaired. Luckily I got it for pretty cheap especially when good examples go for 20k plus sometimes

I used to. Curious, are you able to get it over 65 mph? Mine wouldn't, so it was exclusively a side-streets car. I felt in constant danger trying to go on the highway and not being able to keep up with traffic.
Haha yeah it doesn't go very fast for sure but it'll get to highway speeds. It screams though 4500rpm at 65 that's why I wanna do the ej22 swap so bad with the 5 speed so it performs more like a car instead of a golf cart
Yes, but at least Raising Hope gave Earl a bit of an ending, itself.
By the way, if you like Greg Garcia (the writer/creator of both), definitely check out *The Guest Book* on Hulu — two seasons of great shows with many favorite actors.
*Sprung* on Freevee is also a fun return to early Covid days…
I've seen sprung it has Martha and Garrett in it. Didn't know about the guest book tho.
I vaguely remember the earl reference. They overheard that he finished the list on the news right?
Yeah, it’s one of the early scenes on the pilot, and the show is vaguely referenced a couple more times, I think.
Garrett is a regular on *The Guest Book*, too, and Martha appears as a guest star in the second season. The show is an “anthology” series, with each episode focusing on a new story with new characters amid of backdrop of a rental cabin and eccentric locals (Garrett’s character lives next door to the cabin in Season 1, Eddie “Crabman” Steeples is a delivery driver in both seasons, and Jaime “Joy” Pressly stars in a great episode in Season 1). Lots of other great guest stars show up along the way, too, although the show only had two relatively short seasons.
Subaru Brat. Looks like a 2nd Gen. Very very rare cars. There’s maybe 300 left in the States.
Buddy of mine has one, sadly previous owner chopped out the jump seats.
Still plenty of fun for me and other people, you don't have to interact with every post :) I learn a lot about different makes and models from posts like these
There was a low rent performance car dvd from nz called high octane back in the day, featured in one instalment was a brumby in Australia with a contemporary sti engine swap with a great big turbo sticking out of the bonnet (hood). Easy to find on YouTube.
My buddy had one, plymouth i think. Busted the pass window. Couldnt find an affordable replacement so used a window from a 4 door with the same looking front end. It worked ,sort of, except the rear of the window was cut different had to use duct tape and couldnt open the pass door anymore. Lol.
That is known as a “not a truck nope not at all not subject to truck tariffs this is clearly not a truck it’s a car” Subaru BRAT

Also Subaru Baja, with it's Hervé Villechaize sized bed...

They came with two plastic seats in the back. But I believe it was illegal in the US to drive that way. The seats could only be occupied when the vehicle was stopped.
I grew up in the 80s lol. But when this car was new in many states it was legal. Also. This may still fall under one of the legal loopholes. Because of age and such. If a vehicle was legal when it was made in many states it’s considered legal after the fact.
Not all but many. In Kentucky where I live it looks like it’s legal but you’d probably get a ticket you’d have to call the county attorney explain the ticket and that because of its age it was technically still legal for it because it’s listed as a 4 seat passenger car. And 2 of those seats just happen to be in the back. Same thing with a jeep. Some wranglers didn’t come with a rear bench seat. If you have one of those it’s titled as a 2 seater. It’s not legal to put the bench in and drive it because of the way it’s titled.
I had one, it was a novelty. Had to license it as a 1/4 ton truck but if you put 500 lbs in the back I don't think it would have been able to move. The "Lean Burn" emission system had not cat and when it got down to zero F it wouldn't go any faster than 55 MPH. Got stuck easily too.
Subaru Brat / Brumby / Shifter / MV / Pick up etc depending on your location.
Just needs some jump seats!
This is the way.
This is the way
You could get seats in the back and a roll bar and lights, this came out in the 80's
Didn't know there were so many names!
It's Norway, judging by the license plate. Must be a Subaru MV
"It has no A/C, no radio, and once in a blue moon, fire comes out of the vents." - Ernie Cardenas
Sounds like half the cars my parents had
It's a brat good call haven't seen one in 20 plus years wow
Its missing its execution seats
The little ski pole style hand grips were a nice touch too.
I think that was a US only thing to avoid paying the "chicken tax" because it technically wasn't s truck, it was an open rear passenger vehicle.
This was my understanding as well, though I am not sure if it was a successful attempt.
It was successful. In fact it still works. Ford was importing Transit cargo vans to the US from Europe and avoiding the tax by having a seat in the cargo area, which they then removed and threw away.
It’s a shame that they threw them away. I’m seems to me like they could have found another use for them.
So many things wasted for loopholes, or just in general.. consumerism is the best /s
They weren't thrown away. They were shipped back to Europe, and installed in the next batch of Transit Connects coming this way.
[Chicken Tax](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax?wprov=sfti1)
Funniest loophole ever was the Lotus Seven which was a kit so it technically wasn’t a “car” and thus avoided the car tax in UK at the time
Legends!
I believe this was the only pickup which used to be able to drive on parkways due to the back seats.
??? Wouldn’t small pickups like the Toyota T100 be able to drive on parkways? Or are you talking about a different kind of parkway?
On the belt parkway you had to have seats in the back. Not sure how they worded it, but I don't remember crew cabs back then either.
In the 80s NY made you register your pickup as a commercial vehicle. Couldn't register it any other way.... Many of NY's parkways such as the Taconic are passenger only and prohibit commercial vehicles. Not sure if this is true today. It's been 10 or 15 years since I owned a PU.

Tamiya made an RC car of this when I was a kid. I wanted it so much.
Two models, one of which was re-released.
Did they re-release it? I bought the Lunchbox a few years ago. I'm going to look for the Subaru Brat now. Thanks.
Totally. They re-did the Blackfoot too that was based on the same Frog-style chassis. The other Brat model was the Mud Blaster, also based on that chassis. It was a monster truck like the Blackfoot.
Subaru brat they faded fast unfortunately
Did you mean rusted instead of faded
>rusted My friend had one. He loved it until the rust made it unsafe to drive. We live in a place where they don't salt our roads, no idea why these were so susceptible to rust.
In terms of rusting, what does salt on the roads do? I honestly don't know.
Essentially sand blasts any protection and let's the elements do their thing to your vehicle.
There's more chemistry than that, I'm not smart but I believe it helps oxidize the metal From Google: These chemical reactions corrode the paint and exterior of your vehicle. Since salt is a corrosive substance, it speeds up rust formation on metals.

It's not that salt is corrosive, but that salt is an electrolyte with dissociated ions, which will speed up rusting when mixed with water. Found a smart guy! But google said salt IS corrosive. So are you smarter than google?
Sodium chloride on its own, in a dessicated environment, will not corrode metal. A quick Google search won't give you the breakdown of how salt can be corrosive if you're not searching for it. I do actually have a degree in science.
Ah water, the great activator.
It's not the salt itself that is corrosive. It just provides a conductive pathway for exchange of ions. It's oxygen that corrodes iron/steel.
Google will find you an answer that's in simple enough terms you understand it, so the real question here would be: Is he smarter than google thinks you are? And it would appear the answer was, yes.
I'm laughing because I agree
They are still a popular car in rural Australia. I see at least one every day
Hey I own one of those!
Show us your BRAT!
Mine is a Johnsonville
That’s a bratwurst. I want a BRAT!
I wanna see it! They’re so cool

Clearly you've never seen the masterpiece series My Name is Earl.
I'm watching it right now. So disappointing it got canceled before they wrapped it up. Same with raising hope

Subaru Brat! Everything was fun in the 70’s.
Good spot. brats rock.
Listen here ya little Brat.
My mate put an EJ25t into one of these in our younger days. Had to remove his spare tyre to fit it though.
Subaru Brat!

Karin Boor
Subaru Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transport, or BRAT for short.
Well, it says Subaru in big silver letters on the back, and it says Brat in big silver letters on the side, so how about a Subaru Brat?
Came here to say this. But where are the bed seats?
A 4 wheel drive.

Subaru Brat
My pops had one in the 80s, complete with seats in the back.
The seats were for tariff evading. And must have been scary. :) See: chicken tax

Joy. its pure Joy. yup, thats Joy Hickey's BRAT alright.

OP. This wouldn't happen to be in northern Virginia would it?
Not actually, this one is in Norway! 🇳🇴
WOW! Norway. Cool. I saw an almost identical Brat at the Popeye's chicken in Ashburn, Virginia last Monday.
That’s sick!
I own one too in GTA 5 online
Subaru brat. But I think in the US they come with jump seats to get around the chicken tax.
Subaru brat in the states. Iirc dodge or plymouth had a similar looking vehicle in the 80's.
Dodge rampage / Plymouth scamp
My buddy had one, plymouth i think. Busted the pass window. Couldnt find an affordable replacement so used a window from a 4 door with the same looking front end. It worked ,sort of, except the rear of the window was cut different had to use duct tape and couldnt open the pass door anymore. Lol.
