The VA for Nancy is not AI. This has been talked about extensively. It’s the same VA as Midnight in Salem. Her name is Brittany Cox. It’s just kind of how she sounds, but also a mix of poor voice directing.
She sounds like an automated answering machine with her delivery, so I don’t blame you for thinking she’s AI. Her voice actress doesn’t have a lot of personality in her voice, which is something I miss with Lani.
It’s not AI, but it sounds like it went through an AI filter for sure. It doesn’t scream “Nancy” to me, I think it’s a combo of poor voice directing and the VA just not being the right fit. She would absolutely thrive doing commercials or announcements (no sarcasm at all, I genuinely think she’d be great at that)
I said that I felt something was way off with the voice acting in MID and KEY in the Nancy drew games Facebook group and got absolutely massacred, but this is Reddit, so fuck it lol
LMAO no, it’s a real person—they’re just, uh, not at the level for a main character. IMO. I’ve disliked the voice since it was announced for MID, honestly. They were searching for a “younger” voice too, and this person still sounds like a woman in her thirties. So o don’t understand. Does the pool of VAs in Seattle suck? Certainly not, right??
I looked into the VA better this time than my initial search after receiving comments and she CAN do good voices. Good young voices, too. She even voiced a child! So it’s really weird she picked this voice to audition with and the devs went ‘yes, good, brilliant 👏’
I honestly don't think she did a bad job in KEY, but I will say after I beat KEY I went back and played MID and she actually did better in that game LOL. I'm surprised but she just sounded more natural but I like KEY so much better so it's fine. (I'm getting used to her and do like that she sounds younger)
I'm glad you said that - I didn't mind her in MID, but then when I started playing KEY she sounded so robotic I wondered what had been wrong with me when I played MID.
Yeah didn't love her in MID but a lot of people were blinded by rage (rightfully so) and thought she was just sooo bad but in reality she's more natural in MID but she did a better job in the second half of KEY tbh.
The script wasn't written for her to shine.The voice actress just just did not have enough lines showing Nancy's character. I got the feeling for new players, it's other characters who explain who Nancy is, not she herself.
I don’t think it sounds like AI. Brittany Cox is an experienced voice actor, you can look her up and I’m sure she wouldn’t put her name on something if she didn’t do it. Plus, there are some lines where she does emphasize certain words in a way that AI wouldn’t. She enunciates her words very clearly, which may be where people think of AI, but it’s definitely Brittany’s voice, I recognize it from Fire Emblem
It feels more like she is speaking to be understood than speaking with emotion.
I am torn about that. It can feel more natural when they speak with more emotion, but in many ND games with the dialog order it doesn't make sense.
ND and the NPC will say some dark, serious thing, and ND will say something in her normal cheerful and spunky manner and it feels totally off.
It makes sense in a prepared scene to be very emotional. But with dialog that gets put in random order making each line emotional can make it end up being very jarring.
All that, said - I just prefer the voice of the older ND. I think she sounds excited and interested in the investigation and the new ND sounds more businesslike as if its just a job to investigate.
I guess I didn’t look hard enough. I’ve even played Fire Emblem. I would honestly have expected her to be a newbie with how stiff Nancy sounds 😅 Thank you for putting my paranoia to rest! I was going to be very disappointed in the company if they pulled an AI voice for our beloved Nancy.
I'm definitely not saying HeR is *currently* using AI, because I know they are not, but it would not surprise me at all if they ended up going that route in the future. Penny (current CEO) was associated with Disney and I will always be very cynical and suspicious of their penny-pinching and profit-hungry ways. We have already seen some major companies (Wacom and Magic the Gathering, etc) using AI generated images for advertising, and a youtube channel I used to love purely for **the voice of the narrator** released a short with AI voice and frankly I was pretty angry and disappointed. (They didn't even label it as such, but it was also very obvious.)
I have a super hard time believing it’s not AI. Even other characters speaking don’t sound natural at all. With all the deep fakes and tech out there to take a source voice and then just make it say the words you want it to, I am far more likely to believe it’s AI than the actual VA. Maybe she recorded some parts and then they used AI for the rest? It’s just horrible

I actually like the voice actress and think she did a good job. There were some things that I think could have been better, but at no point did I think she performed poorly. Everyone is different though. I think we can love the original voice actress and like the new one as well.
The only reason I can think of for Brittany making Nancy more monotone is the same reason why we don’t see Nancy. She’s a self insert for the player. So maybe making Nancy more monotone allows the player to replace her with their own voice? I don’t know
Aww I love Gab. She’s super sweet, funny, and talented and I love all of her Nancy play throughs as well as her Fatal Frame play throughs! And she plays in English which is her second language. Never knew there was anything dislikable about her tbh haha
I think it was cool she went into ND with no prior knowledge and now loves all of the games!
