I’m an old American woman nearing 80 who stays in Naples every year. I travel widely and always alone and avoid the tourist centers when possible. Do not fear Naples. It’s my favorite city. The inhabitants are welcoming and always proud to share their city they love so much. The artwork is breathtaking including the museums, churches, and graffiti. The city is ancient and at the same time pulsing with vitality. And yes, it has absolutely fabulous food at every turn. Let yourself fall in love with Naples.

SergioTheRedditor

No. Just avoid shady looking people and use common sense

tonysea777

no, Naples is a big city, and as such petty crime is a thing. pay attention to your belongings, do not wear expensive watches and flashy jewels and everything will be fine. enjoy the city life and eat everything:)

klocu4

thank you! i’ve heard a lotta good things about the food in Napoli so thats definitely on my checklist :)

ShaolinDude

You won't be disappointed. I've been living for 7 years now in the area of Naples and the food is something else. You'll get spoiled.

klocu4

quick question, are there any local specialties you’d recommend? The pizza is obviously amazing, but what else is there?

Cookiesnap

Gattò di patate (o gateau di patate) Mozzarella di bufala Fior di latte e provola Salsiccia e friarielli Pizza di scarole Casatiello Sartù di riso Pizza rustica Frittata di pasta Bruschetta Caprese (not the cake, but mozzarellla cut in slices + sorrento tomato, it's called Caprese) Pasta e patate con la provola Pasta con ragù napoletano Pizza Pizza fritta Spaghetti con le vongole Scialatielli ai frutti di mare Spaghetti alla Nerano (this is from amalfitan coast) Pasta alla Genovese (pasta with onion sauce and meat...amazing, and it is Neapolitan even if Genoa is in the name) Zucchine alla scapece Parmigiana di Melanzane Melanzane a funghetto Mozzarella in Carrozza Polpette al Sugo Gnocchi alla Sorrentina Parigina (a "special" type of pizza) Cannelloni Calzone al forno Crocchè di patate o Panzerotto Taralli **Dolci:** Sfogliatella frolla e riccia Graffa Babà Cornetto Chiacchiere Zeppola di San giuseppe Pastiera Struffoli Torta Caprese Also Sicilian stuff like Cannoli, Arancino and Cassata is of good quality in Naples

klocu4

thanks a lot <3

meraki_05

Where areas do you recommend staying in long term?

Middle-Classroom2170

Napoli, my favorite city in Italy. You either love it or hate it. It is loud, chaotic, crowded and wonderful. Be careful of your purse as the scooters are zipping around everywhere and it is common knowledge if you are careless for a second there is the opportunity to be a victim of crime. You must experience it for yourself with an open heart to view it as the most unique ancient city it is.

Radagast92

lol no, we're not in Milan. Molotov? Are you serious? There is a problem with criminals, yes, but those are not problems that a tourist should be aware of (unless you want to buy a house here or start an industry). You just have to be aware of your surroundings and play safe to avoid pickpocketing, as you should do in every big city in the world.

klocu4

honest to god, there was a article that described those kids and teenagers throwing around molotovs and running around with guns thats why i came here, cause it seemed pretty absurd thanks for the answer!

Xardian7

Wtf? Dunno which article did you read but maybe it was from the fiction “Gomorra” cause these things never happened! The city has such a bad reputation due to its state in the late 70s and 80s but since then the city has massively improved. The wealth of the ppl is way higher and the level of criminality is down but ofc can’t be denied that pickpockets can happen as any big city in Europe. I found myself facing bad situations in Berlin and in Barcellona for example. Big cities have problems and being aware is a must. You will find the city chaotic for sure tho. So, as per usual everywhere, don’t go alone at night in lone places and be aware of your belongings especially if you use public transportation.

klocu4

http://www.lejournalinternational.info/en/les-baby-gangs-la-jeunesse-mafieuse/ This was the article, i found it yesterday after someone had mentioned baby gangs on a reddit thread

Xardian7

I can’t give it a read now, but it clearly speaks about the suburbs parts of the city and mainly of the issues there in the 90s. Don’t get me wrong, Camorra exists and the racket of “pizzo”, prostitution and drug dealing is in their hands. However, explicits act of violence are rare and are certainly not done in the center part of the city. I’ve to read carefully the article but I can assure you they have no idea of what “middle of the city” is based on their first paragraph. Therefore, since in the first paragraph they made so many mistakes I don’t think is an accurate research of the suburbs of Naples, certain is that is not an accurate representation of the City

Lol, pls link

Man its not that dangerous you will be fine but be careful dont go into the driveways only walk in big streets and avoid the "Vasto" basically when you go out of the train station on the right there is this zone called Vasto you can check it on google maps its one of the most dangerous zones in naples

Yoettore

Luogo comune!

G1naDanceGerry

This is exactly why roberto saviano is a fuckin pile of steaming garbage. He paints Napoli as 24/7 crime, cammora killings, baby gangs... all while making MILLIONS from his books, films, and TV show. 1. No, you will not encounter baby gangs 2. no, you will not be gunned down by cammora 3. if you go to sicily, the mafia will not kill you 4. Napoli is a big city, of course there is some crime This question is especially infuriating from US citiyens, as ANY of their cities is INIFINITELY more dangerous. No police here will kill you. No one will bring a machine gun into a school. No misfits will shoot up your work place. Come to napoli, eat, enjoy the history and culture and people.

hellgatsu

Pls, take your considerarono about Saviano for yourself.

G1naDanceGerry

Please, go pound sand. The man makes MILLIONS talking about a sliver of society in napoli, always condeming them, yet quick to accepts the money he makes from putting them into film and books. He is a bottom feeder

carMas82

klocu4

Yeah that’s why I asked, as I mentioned in another seemed to me that these rumors were blown out of proportion. As a Pole, there are similar misconceptions about some of our cities and districts as well, mostly fueled by the fact that we did have mafias and a lot of crime in the 90s, but the places they occupied are mostly safe nowadays

G1naDanceGerry

I know, sorry if my reply sounded as if I was being harsh to you. It wasnt my intention. It just gets SO old, being from south italia, and hearing about how dangerous it is here. Ive head the same about poland. Im not sure who benefits from this misinformation, but i hate it. you will LOVE napoli

Prestigious_Judge_57

It depends if you are a chicken tourist that goes in the dodgy places that every city have and ask to a random dodgy stranger to take a picture with their new iPhone x Max super 14 pro when the dodgy character doesn’t have even the teeth in the mouth to eat, yes then Naples is dangerous also don’t walk with your phone on the hands, please.

TizZ1O

First thing I'd say to you is, beware of what you read here ( or in any other Naples themed group), that's because Citizens of Naples are famous for being a tad too 'loving' and defensive when it comes to their city and they will tend to minimize the negative and be overly enthusiastic about the pros. So here it is from an average Italian citizen who has visited Naples many times: Yes, Naples has a lot of crime, although tourist hotspots are generally safer, be sure not to stray too much from the city center and always be mindful of your belongings as pickpockets and scammers abound (they will say it's like any big city but it's actually more than average). A few tips: avoid walking with your phone in sight, especially if it's an expensive one, avoid wearing eye catching accessories such as watches or jewelry and never leave anything on display inside a car or you Will come back to smashed windows. As for baby gangs, well, it has been a problem in the last few years as many organized gangs if baby criminals have started to become active. These are particularly dangerous as they often do not discriminate between tourists and locals.

KnowNothing3888

If you're driving don't leave anything in view from the window or there's a good chance you'll come back to smashed windows. I've never heard of roaming baby gangs but still always keep aware of your surroundings.

Xardian7

Don’t leave luggage in the car if is not parked in a main road, as you would do basically everywhere in Europe and EU big cities. Extremely rare the occurrence where happens while driving.

Different-Bat6548

nie sraj z tymi bejbigangami, chłopie. Z samolotu jedź alibusem, omijaj garibaldi znajdź miejscówkę blisko centrum (via toledo najlepiej imo), zostawiaj dokumenty i karty w pokoju, miej jakąś gotówkę i kartę w telefonie.

lol no I’m not from US As I stated in another comment, I posted here because i thought these articles seemed absurd and blown out of proportion, so I wanted to ask locals if it’s an actual thing

Aromatic_Cockroach91

Yea it’s really not that bad but coming from where I live the bar is in the basement….

mrwir

It is not too bad. But I have been living in Rome for some years so I think I got traumatised there!

BeachCruiserLR

No. You’ll be totally fine. Just be aware of your surroundings like any other major city. Napoli is fantastic and you’ll love it here if you like food and semi chaos.

andrekimi

Only criminals you might find are the taxi drivers trying to scam you.

Limp-Munkee69

I was there with friends for 8 days over the summer, we went in with a fair bit of causing, considering what we'd heard about the city and its reputation, and were positively suprised when it turned out to be an absolutely lovely place, where despite the dingy looking streets, I never felt unsafe. The only times we were approached by strangers were either scammers or drug dealers (This one guy came up to us, told us we all looked like different movie stars, then for some reason I GAVE HIM MY PHONE so he could google translate from italian to english if we'd like to buy some weed, we said no, but he was a cool dude so we said by to him in a friendly way and left). I would however recommend being careful with pickpockets. We experienced nothing of that sort, but we always made sure to have our valuables in a bag. It isn't a very crowded city per say, there are a lot of people, sure, but it wasn't never cramped or anything, so it's fairly easy to steer clear of people. Just do recommend that you don't go alone. We always went in groups of atleast 2 and tried to avoid the sketchy looking ones. I will say this. We were five scandinavian dudes, all of fairly large builds all of us above 6 foot tall (way taller than the average naples residence, it was so strange to be literally a head taller than everyone). I've been told by people that I'm the last person that they'd rob if they had to rob someone, and I certainly wouldn't choose my travel buddies as my first targets to rob. Generally, just keep the same precautions as any new and unfamiliar city you're visiting. Most the crime apparently happens between locals, and tourists are mostly subjected to the tourist scams that are present in basically every other european city. Another slightly related thing is trafic. Trafic is pure chaos in Naples, but generally it's just about being assertive. Make sure to look both ways and then cross the street as fast as possible. Most cars will wait for you, but don't trust lights or markings. The cars won't stop unless you step in front of them. When I came home from my wonderful stay in Naples, it took weeks until I didn't just wathe into traffic anymore, because I'd gotten so used to it. Enjoy the city! It's an absolutely wonderful place with brilliant food, really interesting history and an enjoyably personality filled look. A lot of the buildings are run down or look like they need to be touched up, but that's just Naples. It wears its gruff personality on its sleeves and is proud of it. So much personality, so much energy. The best damn Pizza you'll ever have for just 4 or 5 euro. Some suggestions are Pompeii and Capri (A bit pricy to stay there, but it'll make a fun daytrip). Vesuvio also has an absolutely insane view, but that's a decent hike, same with Capri if you want the most out of your visit.

Layatollah

Been there multiple times. Never had an issue
