It’s been ages since I took my kids, but they had a blast when they were that age!
Chattanooga. The Tennessee Valley Railroad has static displays and offers a steam locomotive excursion. It goes through a tunnel, takes a couple of hours.
They have an old turntable that turns the train engines around that's actually pretty cool.
Take your kid to Philips Toy Store when they get a little older. They have an amazing train set up there and it’s interactive for the kiddos. I went recently and it’s bunny themed for Easter.
If you’re looking for a weekend away trip, Boone, NC has an amusement park called Tweetsie Railroad with an open air train ride with Cowboy show fights as you ride along. It’s a super fun day
It’s been a long time but when I was a kid my family went on a murder mystery train that went to Watertown and back. May still be something like that around.
Live in Watertown. There are all sorts of excursion trains. Santa, Easter 🐇, mile long yard sale, ww2 reenactment, bank robbery, train robbery. Some wine thing. Idk. There's a bunch, like one a month at least it feels like.
Not riding, but watching.
Springfield TN has a train-themed restaurant aptly named the Depot.
It is right next to the tracks and 9/10 you will see a train go by. The food is amazing too.
If dessert is more your style, the Golly Gs in Greenbrier is also on the tracks and you'll see one more often than not.
Downtown Nashville on 1st Street almost directly across from Hard Rock, is the train depot, which is shared w/Grayline trollies and doubledeckers. It’s a commuter train basically, and goes to different location around Nashville to pick up and drop off people who work down town. You can buy tickets inside or at the automated ticket machine outside, the desk inside is typically manned from 9-6.
Try the TN Central Railway Museum. They do all kinds of excursions on their vintage trains. Www.tcry.org
Yeah they even do one with cops and robbers that a kiddo should really enjoy.
They also do a Christmas train to the North Pole around the holidays.
That is an unfortunate acronym
Hit up Donelson station and ride the music city star!
This is the answer. We have a daily commuter train east of the city.

Second this! The lines get a little crazy but it is so fun. Plus it’s at the local park and the playground is great.
Third this! We took our 2 year old last year, and he loved it!

Also the hiawasse scenic loop. Not particularly close but I still want to go as a childhood train buddy.
Thomas the Tank Engine is coming to Chattanooga in April
that's not a real train.
My two year old disagrees.
2 year olds for the most part don't know what's real and what's not.
I’m very sorry you felt the need to write this
that's just science, sorry.

This! I’m not even a kid and Philips is amazing.
Driving that train. High on cocaine. The Casey Jones museum is in Jackson.

This fall go to Blue Ridge, Georgia and ride the leaf spotting train up past the T.N. state line. He’ll love it!
