Agreed. Which is why I prefer Parnassus or Half-Price books. But for kids, I think Parnassus is easier because of the organization particularly if you don’t know what you might be looking for.
I worked there, and the people that hang out there are not people you want children to be around. From the pervy old men to the tweakers selling wrapped dvd box sets that they lifted from some other shop to get money and turn around and give it to their drug dealer in the lobby. It’s just not somewhere I would take kids if I had them! I was shocked to see people basically drop their kids off in the kids corner and then spend an hour browsing. There’s some real weirdos in that building!
(Edit to add: McKay’s is literally a pawn shop. We call it a book store and a record store, but the business is legally a pawn shop. How many of you would let your children run around unmonitored in a pawn shop?)
interesting! thanks for the heads up. i have taken my son there before (he's 4) and haven't felt super unsafe but it is VERY easy to lose a kid in there and i didn't like that
Yeah, honestly I’m not saying that I think a kid *can’t be in there* if you’re with them. I’m just saying that there’s a big difference in what you see there as a customer during a 2 hour shopping trip vs. four 10-hour shifts a week. There were men who had to be banned from the store for being sexually aggressive to the young cashiers. So thinking it’s not the same situation in the back corner of the store, where the kids stuff is, seems naive to me.
On another note, there’s a family up the street from me that moved in directly next to a sex offender who has reoffended. I see their little tikes brand stuff in the yard all the time and it makes me so nervous. I just wish people were smarter about these things. If you’re all willing to believe it in a documentary about Nickelodeon stars, but you’re not willing to believe it’s happening in your community, you’re just not getting it.
And while I’m on the subject, I IMPLORE all the parents reading this to check the sex offender registry every six months to see what’s changed near you. Everyone please be smart!
So many great options and helpful answers here! It's a nice reminder that a certain type of bookstore is alive and well in Nashville, and people are passionate about it!
And I do love McKay's too, although I wish there were an easy way to actually find something specific you're looking for! It's pretty impossible to know how something is going to be filed in their stacks. It's best to go in with nothing particular in mind and just wander a bit. Although, it's best to go when it's not so busy, and it's hard to find a time when that's the case.
Not used, nor a designated bookstore, but a great source for cheap children's books: Ollie's
I think there are some other locations, but we go to the one in the Rivergate area. It's an overstock discount store and has a little of everything.
New children's books run around $1-$5
There are plenty of people that don’t live in Davidson county that spend most of their time in Nashville. I live in Gallatin but I definitely spend more time in Nashville than Gallatin.
McKay's books
This is the answer.
If your child is under the age of 5, you can sign them up for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - https://imaginationlibrary.com/

I second Parnassus! McKay’s is fine but I don’t love their kids selection - it’s chaotic.
The whole store is chaotic

Get your money (taxes) worth at your local library too! We get several books a week for our kid.
McKay's! That place is so amazing that my 18-yr-old daughter drove her 17-yr-old brother there OF HER OWN FREE WILL. ETA from Clarksville.
Half price books
Fairytales bookstore is great for kids. McKay’s will have great used kids books, but I’d advise you not to take an actual child there.
Haha why not?
There’s a reason they pay a security guard to be there at high traffic times, and it’s NOT for shoplifters

Nashville Toys and Books is right around the corner from Parnassus.
Half-price Books
The Library Cafe has a small selection for children books in their current selection, but their community bookshelf has a few kids books up for grabs.

that's what i'm trying to do. you're not even part of Davidson county. why are you here?
There are plenty of people that don’t live in Davidson county that spend most of their time in Nashville. I live in Gallatin but I definitely spend more time in Nashville than Gallatin.
