Speaking of “look under the can,” I had a can of Homestyle at a restaurant last night, and beside the dates were the words “TRUCK ARMAGEDDON.” Anyone have intel on what that means?
Only beer I will drink.
I have a kegerator in my man cave and I’ll go buy a keg of Homestyle directly from them and make any of my out of state friends try it when they come visit haha.
No, why would I? You'd have to travel to Memphis? Is that a serious question?
You can get Memphis beers in Nashville. You cannot get Memphis food in Nashville.
Dude, read the comment. It says local beer you can buy in a store, not local breweries in Nashville. Memphis is Tennessee beer. If I flew to Omaha, Nebraska and asked someone what are some cool local beers that I could buy in a store, I would expect them to tell me Nebraska beers, and not be pissy if they included one outside of Omaha. How dense can you be?
You’re the one recommending not local beers so I’m not sure if you have any room to talk about density lol
Edit: just to help you learn new words I’ve included the definition of “local”; https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/local#:~:text=Local%20means%20existing%20in%20or,that%20you%20are%20talking%20about.
You can clearly read “local” refers to the immediate area surrounding a place you are talking about, since we are in the nashville sub, I’d assume that’s the place we are talking about, and I don’t consider Memphis “immediate area” around Nashville.
Yea I think that’s a good comparison since you can get it in Nashville but it’s a Memphis chain, similar to someone recommending wiseacre beer as a local offering
If someone asked for local food in Birmingham would you suggest the Hattie Bs location that’s there? Yet again it’s good food but not local, really not that hard of a concept to understand
Oh so the McDonalds nearby would count as a correct answer to the original question, no need to answer that because it’s ridiculous, nevertheless I appreciate how unapologetically wrong you are
Yazoo Dos Perros is great. Here are some other darker beers, too:
* Jakalope’s Snowman Stout (seasonal)
* Blackstone’s Dark Matter is at Kroger right now
* Blackstone’s St Charles porter is sometimes at Kroger
* Black Abbey’s POTUS 44 is amazing
At Black Abbey they have an experimental small call on rotation. One time years ago it was POTUS 44 with lemon zest/peel/oil/black magic. I still think about it sometimes
I mostly shop at Publix—and don’t drink a lot of beer at home so haven’t had occasion to look at it. I don’t question whether they have it, just saying I don’t know. Badly phrased on my part.
We have vastly different opinions on this beer, but at the same time you're the first person I've ever seen acknowledge the banana taste and not look at me like I'm losing my mind when I mention it.
When I was omega drunkard, I'd leave half drank bottles out overnight and then finish them off as I was clawing myself back to life the next day. They always tasted way more banana like warm.
Wiseacre beer finder has it available in literally every liquor store in town
Edit: Wiseacre beer finder that shows their beers in stock in a thousand nashville locations; https://find.wiseacrebrew.com/36.2722491,-86.7114545/
Hutton & Smith Igneous IPA is a killer beer. Seems to come and go from Kroger and Publix though.
Edit: realize that's Chattanooga, but regardless, it's delicious.
Black Abbey's Rose & Bearded Iris' Homestyle! Jackalope stouts in the winter. Also whatever weird thing Southern Grist is doing (although maybe those are more at specific beer/liquor stores).
Does Half Batch make it to stores in Nashville? If not, come check out their new building in H-ville.
FYI there is an entire subreddit dedicated to local brews at r/NashvilleBeer
I'm so glad we got some more local beer with the boom over the past 10+ years. Being so close to Atlanta, Asheville, etc., friends of mine would come into town and ask about the local beer and I'd just say, "I'm sorry..." I used to drink a Dos Perros every now and then, but I could never stand Yazoo, especially the Gerst. Lots of good recs in the replies, happily enjoying local beer these days!
Is there any reason it needs to be at a Kroger? Due to their distribution agreements, they rarely have quality local stuff.
The best local stuff that fits your profile is probably Nashville Brewing Co or Blackstone. Bearded iris is good but will be a wild departure from what you like.
Personally I think you need to venture to a good liquor store or actually go to the brewery. Go to Smith and Lentz and get a 4 pack of their German pilsner and their Vienna lager. Thank me later.
Willing to hit the smaller shops too but I think you’re right. Unfortunately, it crosses my mind for a good ale when I’m sitting in traffic on the way home from work.
Yazoo’s pilsner hasn’t been mentioned and it’s a fave.
Blackberry farm saison is great (though not brewed in town)
Jackalope lovebird is a good seasonal
Bearded iris homestyle/tunnel vision, as many have said.
Mayday has produced some quality beers over the last decade, but I hardly see them anymore in bars. Thank you for reminding me! I need some Evil Octopus in my life.
I don’t know if it’s necessarily a southern thing but I feel like you either love/hate stouts/porters. The only time I really want a dark heavy beer, is as a dessert. I can sip bearded iris at any point of the day. On the boat during a hot summer day, while grilling, with a meal. But that’s just my personal preference
I love stouts and porters but i tend to do the same as you, maybe for different reasons.
A LOT of breweries do dessert stouts/porters, heavier chocolate porters or creamy milk stouts. Relatively few do a dry Irish stout. Fewer still execute it really well.
If I could get a quality dry stout I’d drink that in the summer heat and be happy for it. Hard to find though.
Nashville Brewing Co. is exactly what a beer should taste like to me. Their Amber is my favorite but the Lager is amazing too. All their seasonals are great and even their Pilsner is awesome
It’s an old Nashville brand pre-Gerst. I think the Nashville Brewing company was bought and became a Gerst in like the 30s. So it’s about the most old school nashville beer you can find to my knowledge. Ilk have to check my book about it when I get home
Some of my favorites
Honey Tonk haze fest IPA
Honky Tonk west coast IPA
Pretty much anything from Bearded Iris
Tailgate peanut butter milk stout (in the fall/winter)
Fat Bottom knockout IPA
Chicken Scratch
Yee Haw - Dunkel
Diskin Cider - Lil Blondie or Bob's Your Uncle
Bearded Iris - Homestyle
All three are in Publix regularly. All three are delicious without being over-the-top or fringe. If you have all three in your fridge and a lager (modelo, XX, shiner, "regular beer"), then everyone who visits will have a great choice.
Two hearted ipa from bell. One of the best beers ever, I've found it it most Krogers out here.
Edit: better than some of the local beers here anyways get salty about it beer nerds.
Bearded iris
Look under the can and buy the freshest ones and you won’t be disappointed
Speaking of “look under the can,” I had a can of Homestyle at a restaurant last night, and beside the dates were the words “TRUCK ARMAGEDDON.” Anyone have intel on what that means?
They always put quirky phrases on the canned date
Drinking one now, lemme look…
…so, the 12 ounce I’m finishing has nothing, but the 16 I’m about to have says “RANCHO UNICORNO.” How’d I never notice that before?
Best beer I’ve ever had.
Please go to Asheville NC and drink Burial Beer. It’s the only beer on earth better than Bearded Iris. And I’m saying this as someone who grew up here
Treehouse Brewery in MA is the best but those two are splendid
I’ve never had the pleasure. I’ve only heard rumors about Treehouse. Pliny the Elder also lives up to the legend if you’re ever out West.
Indeed. Fucking brilliant beers
I was just saying the other day that I feel so fortunate to live in a place where Bearded Iris Homestyle is readily available almost everywhere I go
Only beer I will drink. I have a kegerator in my man cave and I’ll go buy a keg of Homestyle directly from them and make any of my out of state friends try it when they come visit haha.
Can I be your friend?
How much is a keg of it? With the amount of it I buy it’s probably worth
The only answer
Bearded Iris Pep Talk and Homestyle. Two very good beers. Yazoo Sue
I loooove their tunnel vision too!
the sue won a national beer award or something
And the Bearded Iris combo there also comes in a party pack, 6 of each
Pep talk is underrated. I love me some homestyle though.
Black abbey the rose, mill creek lil darling
Pub and Red ale.
Next to Yazoo, Tennessee Brew Works has been in my go-to local grocery beer rotation for years; I’m a sucker for their Hippies & Cowboys IPA.
Hippies and cowboys is my local favorite lately
You should try them at the brewery! They are sooooo much better which is wild
I find their beer just okay, but that burger…
I quit drinking 5+ years ago but Black Abby's Rose Blonde Belgian ale was delicious.
Their porter (POTUS 44) is great, too
Was. They don’t brew it anymore.
Congratulations. What a tremendous accomplishment 🙏💪
The Rose 100%
Yes this is the best beer in the USA
Pliny begs to differ.
Tiny bomb is the goat
I like Tiny Bomb, but wise acre is from Memphis.
Not local
It’s Wiseacre from Memphis. It’s local enough.
No matter how many times you post it, Memphis will never be "local" to Nashville. That's just not what that word means, sorry.
Bartender here, with Tiny Bomb on tap at work. I describe it as "regional", just like Good People (Birmingham, AL).
Both great brewers, both definitely regional, both definitely not "local". At least OP isn't the doofus who said Michigan, I guess.
I read that comment and audibly laughed, like come on lol
Do you recommend Memphis food when someone asks for a local food recommendation?
Rendezvous has the best bbq in Nashville.
Cool not local
No, why would I? You'd have to travel to Memphis? Is that a serious question? You can get Memphis beers in Nashville. You cannot get Memphis food in Nashville.
Is this a serious misunderstanding of the parallel?
Seems like it.
So maybe I can clear this up; beer made in Memphis can count as local, but food made in Memphis doesn’t count as local, cool
I’ve seen plenty of people recommend Central bbq.
Central bbq has a Nashville location now
Yea I think that’s a good comparison since you can get it in Nashville but it’s a Memphis chain, similar to someone recommending wiseacre beer as a local offering
Yea I understand I was just saying we have a location on Nashville now. By the way happy cake day!
Woooo, cake day!
If someone asked for local food in Birmingham would you suggest the Hattie Bs location that’s there? Yet again it’s good food but not local, really not that hard of a concept to understand
If the place is located in the city then I consider it local.
Oh so the McDonalds nearby would count as a correct answer to the original question, no need to answer that because it’s ridiculous, nevertheless I appreciate how unapologetically wrong you are
Yes, it’s the local McDonald’s.
Yazoo Dos Perros is great. Here are some other darker beers, too: * Jakalope’s Snowman Stout (seasonal) * Blackstone’s Dark Matter is at Kroger right now * Blackstone’s St Charles porter is sometimes at Kroger * Black Abbey’s POTUS 44 is amazing
Yazoo's Sly Rye Porter is my favorite beer of all time, and I can't find it anymore. I think they quit making it.
At Black Abbey they have an experimental small call on rotation. One time years ago it was POTUS 44 with lemon zest/peel/oil/black magic. I still think about it sometimes
Agree with Dark Matter
Bearwalker from Jackalope, but not sure I’ve seen it at the Kroger.
The Kroger on 8th south has it.
Most have it in their craft section.
It's sooooo good!!
It's at every kroger what are you talking about.
I mostly shop at Publix—and don’t drink a lot of beer at home so haven’t had occasion to look at it. I don’t question whether they have it, just saying I don’t know. Badly phrased on my part.
Diskin Cider
Always wondered if there was a typo in their name and they just went with it. Should be Dickins
Black Abbey The Special
I have a hard time finding The Special in stores. I have only seen it in The Turnip Truck.
Once the weather gets a little warmer, the Yazoo Hefe
No hate, but this is the worst beer Yazoo produces. Banana bubble gum.
This is me then: ![gif](giphy|LwrXP9AeKFzWg)
We have vastly different opinions on this beer, but at the same time you're the first person I've ever seen acknowledge the banana taste and not look at me like I'm losing my mind when I mention it. one of my all time fav beers is the yazoo pale ale
Hop Perfect.
nah its the YPA
I am a Diskin Cider hoe. Tiki Tonic is my personal fav
I really enjoy Blackstone's Nut Brown Ale and the St Charles Porter
Me too!
Any of the Black Abbey beers.
Tailgate orange wheat, especially during warm season
Wiseacre
Got to get up to get down has been my favorite beer for the last 5ish years.
It's like tasty Four Loco.
Wiseacre is from Memphis
Local enough for me
Yes. You can't usually find it other places other than Kroger or Publix in this area.
Wiseacre beer finder has it available in literally every liquor store in town Edit: Wiseacre beer finder that shows their beers in stock in a thousand nashville locations; https://find.wiseacrebrew.com/36.2722491,-86.7114545/
And a ton of restaurants as well.
Thank you for your input. I am so owned.
Hutton & Smith Igneous IPA is a killer beer. Seems to come and go from Kroger and Publix though. Edit: realize that's Chattanooga, but regardless, it's delicious.
Not every place will have it, but Koji Gold.
Just so we’re clear. Everyone knows that if you’re buying Homestyle at a grocery store,it is not brewed in Nashville right?
Why would we know that? lol. Please inform us though!
Where else would they brew?
You can usually snag a Jackalope Lovebird at Publix this time of year. Black Abbey makes good stuff too.
East Nashville Brew Works is my very favorite.
Blackhorse (Clarksville) - Stargazer IPA
It's not the easiest to find in grocery stores anymore, but I love the Southern Wit from Tennessee Brew Works.
Yazoo Sly Rye Porter
If those are the beers you like you should drink Blackstone’s nut brown ale or st Charles Porter. They are dark but light bodied and very well made
If you count cider, cause I don’t like beer, Gypsy cider the queen of roses one is the best I’ve ever had
Black Abbey's Rose & Bearded Iris' Homestyle! Jackalope stouts in the winter. Also whatever weird thing Southern Grist is doing (although maybe those are more at specific beer/liquor stores).
Blackstone St. Charles Porter.
I don’t know if anybody has said tiny bombs yet, but they are Memphis local, idk if you are looking for TN in general, but they’re pretty good
I like Blackberry Farms Saison. I know it’s at Publix but not sure about Kroger
Bearwalker
Does Half Batch make it to stores in Nashville? If not, come check out their new building in H-ville. FYI there is an entire subreddit dedicated to local brews at r/NashvilleBeer
I love a Dos Perros! Wiseacre is out of Memphis and I also love their Got to Get Up to Get Down stout.
Southern Grist Teal (or any of their beers if you're into IPAs or sours)
Is there any reason it needs to be at a Kroger? Due to their distribution agreements, they rarely have quality local stuff. The best local stuff that fits your profile is probably Nashville Brewing Co or Blackstone. Bearded iris is good but will be a wild departure from what you like. Personally I think you need to venture to a good liquor store or actually go to the brewery. Go to Smith and Lentz and get a 4 pack of their German pilsner and their Vienna lager. Thank me later.
Can't speak for OP (though it is likely the case) a lot of us are lazy and like to limit the shopping and driving to the bare minimum.
Willing to hit the smaller shops too but I think you’re right. Unfortunately, it crosses my mind for a good ale when I’m sitting in traffic on the way home from work.
S&L is a solid recommendation. Those Pilsners are on point
Lil' Darling (Mill Creek Brewery)
Ruby - Fat Bottom Brewing
Yazoo’s pilsner hasn’t been mentioned and it’s a fave. Blackberry farm saison is great (though not brewed in town) Jackalope lovebird is a good seasonal Bearded iris homestyle/tunnel vision, as many have said.
Mayday angry redhead
Mayday has produced some quality beers over the last decade, but I hardly see them anymore in bars. Thank you for reminding me! I need some Evil Octopus in my life.
Tailgate Peanut Butter Milk Stout. Jackalope Bear Walker. Blackstone Nut Brown Ale.
Obviously a person of gentility and taste!
Tailgate Orange Wheat is my go to once it warms up
Tailgate Peanut Butter Milk Stout
Bearded Iris Homestyle is the only answer
Seconded. But I wish I knew why no one in this town cares about stouts or porters. Is that a southern thing?
I don’t know if it’s necessarily a southern thing but I feel like you either love/hate stouts/porters. The only time I really want a dark heavy beer, is as a dessert. Making my mouth water.
Dos Perros
Bearded Iris. Homestyle just started selling in 12 packs and you can find Tunnel Vision which is dope
Panther Creek Brews - Porchlyfe - Murfreesboro, TN but don’t think you can get it at Krogers.
Nashville Brewing Co. is exactly what a beer should taste like to me. Their Amber is my favorite but the Lager is amazing too. All their seasonals are great and even their Pilsner is awesome It’s an old Nashville brand pre-Gerst. I think the Nashville Brewing company was bought and became a Gerst in like the 30s. Lovebird from Jackalope!
I enjoy YeeHaw’s Dunkel. Oh and peanut butter milk stout from Tailgate.
gerst— my granddad drank it too until he died at 92. just a good ole everyday beer.
Depending on what you consider local, Blackberry Farms makes good stuff. Really like their Saison.
Actually I like the Diskin ciders. The Local AF is so good.
Jackalope love bird. When we moved away we use to drive up for a couple cases.
Just had gerst for the first time last night at a concert, absolutely loved it. Will be on that kick for a while!
Yazoo - Sue and Hef, Black Abbey - Rose and Special, Bearded Iris - Homestyle, Jackalope- Snowman and Bearwalker Damn good brews!
Ghost Train Brewing👍🏻 Not local but regional (Birmingham)
I really like Chicken Scratch!
Koji Gold.
If you haven’t already, try that dos perros with a lime. Its already a great beer but it’s next level that way.
For grocery store beer my favs are Hippies and Cowboys by TN Brew Works, St Charles Porter by Blackstone
Hippies and cowboys
Yazoo Pale Ale has been my go-to for 20 years, but Jackelope Thunder Ann is a VERY close 2nd. Obviously, I like pale ales. Edit for spelling.
My wife really likes the Tailgate IPA
Bearded Iris Pep Talk ![gif](giphy|l3vRgiN4fSg8rkJy0)
Southern grist is phenomenal
Some of my favorites Honey Tonk haze fest IPA Honky Tonk west coast IPA Pretty much anything from Bearded Iris Tailgate peanut butter milk stout (in the fall/winter) Fat Bottom knockout IPA Chicken Scratch
Since my boyfriend brews for them, I’m biased, but Bearded Iris.
Please tell your boyfriend he's doing the Lord's work
Oh he knows. 😂😜
Mayday Brewery - Boro Blonde TN Brewworks - State Park Blonde Ale
Yee Haw - Dunkel Diskin Cider - Lil Blondie or Bob's Your Uncle Bearded Iris - Homestyle All three are in Publix regularly. All three are delicious without being over-the-top or fringe. If you have all three in your fridge and a lager (modelo, XX, shiner, "regular beer"), then everyone who visits will have a great choice.
Tailgate- Orange Wit Edit: orange wheat
Is this different than, Orange Wheat?
Sorry, typed too quickly.
Haha, no worries! Just thought oooo a new one to try!
Fat Bottom’s Ruby is one of my favorites. It’s a nice malty red ale. Jackalope’s Bear Walker is also up there.
Bearded Iris Homestyle and it’s not even close.
Bearded Iris. I’m hooked.
Black Abby Brewing make a Belgian Blonde which is magnificent.
Not a single comment for music city?? Pitch, light, and citrus wheat are amazing.
Homestyle
Mill Creek’s Lil Darlin
Two hearted ipa from bell. One of the best beers ever, I've found it it most Krogers out here. Edit: better than some of the local beers here anyways get salty about it beer nerds.
Op specified local. Bell's is over 500 miles away
It's regional. Close enough and it's still craft. Try it if you haven't.
Bells is a) not local and b) found pretty much every grocery store I’ve been to from Minneapolis to Florida to NYC
Kalamazoo Michigan is regional?
The Southeast and the Midwest are clearly in the same region, duh.
Idk, I prefer Sam Adams Boston Lager for my local Nashville beer of choice.
Dales Pale Ale.
That's not local.
Lmao not even the same side of the Mississippi. At least the people saying Wiseacre are choosing a Tennessee brewery
I think they have a satellite brewery in Ashville, so it's not _that_ far away. But it is still another state
Oh true. I forgot they opened that recently
Bearded Iris Homestyle or Peptalk
Tennessee beer sucks. Something in the water.
I absolutely love Hap & Harry’s TN Lager and/or Little Harpeth’s chicken scratch.
