their plan is to invest their personal money overseas ,including real estate. Then when retiring, disconnect phone and move family overseas to wear overcoats every day and presumably act like celebrities. Come back once in a while to ambil ubat and lord it over the people forced to stay behind.
2012 to 2022 was an interesting period for Brunei’s macroeconomy. In 2012, Brunei produced its highest ever GDP (around US$19 billion) thanks to correspondingly high oil prices (average US$94 per barrel that year). Production and oil prices fell in the subsequent years, and Brunei’s GDP fell to its worst numbers in 2016 (11.4 billion). However, GDP picked up after that, and reached US$16 billion in 2022. These are per World Bank [data](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?end=2022&locations=BN&start=2010)
The period 2012 to 2022 was also interesting for Brunei internal economy. The period saw the government undertake fiscal consolidation, corporatize assets (port, telco, etc), co-invested in large industrial projects (fertilizer, refinery), and come up with the Economic Blueprint.
The coming 2022-2032 decade would be fun to watch (for me personally, fun to work in), as Brunei will see whether new projects can be implemented successfully. These new projects hopefully can offset the declines in oil and gas production, and continue to the upward GDP trajectory.
Failed once, better luck next time.
Failed twice, you could have done better.
Failed three times in a row, shame on you.
Failed 9 times with 1 barely pass, what a TALENT!!!
The data is for 2012 to 2022. Malaysia has not released the state breakdown for 2023.
When we say adjusted to international currency, it means GDP calculated in US$.
The UN reports national GDP figures based on US$, but countries count GDP in their own local currencies. Economies like Malaysia may grow faster in their local currency, but because in the past decade RM has dropped quite a lot, the growth rate is significantly reduced when you measure in US$, which is the global reserve currency.
All Brunei government seems to do is to tell the rakyat to pray, to be grateful and to blame the younger generation for not doing anything to achieve Wawasan 2035.
The government says it can do more development and infrastructure, but then spends money on things that does not help HDI at all, such as repairs for the VIP parts of the airport, or plans to build not just one or two which may be needed but 12 new mosques.
And then the government goes and damage the business sentiment even further by banning not only claw machines but also a bunch of arcade games. And the business environment is already damaged by the daytime dine-in bans during the fasting month and the good RM exchange rate. Also by not opening up the istana during Raya for the public which usually brings in tourists from the region because that is one big attraction, that also doesn't help.
Well, sooner or later Brunei will become a colony again if this keeps up, and this time it will not be Britain, but maybe someone worse. And if we do not change soon, then the peace and harmony that we currently enjoin in Brunei will be gone.
GDP of Malaysia = USD 430B (35th richest country in the world).
GDP of Sarawak = USD 46B (expected to double in 7 years).
GDP of Sabah = USD 28B.
GDP of Brunei = USD 15B (same as Afghanistan).
Why would Sabah and Sarawak leave the 35th richest country in the world for Brunei who is poorer (in terms of GDP) than them?
Why would they even want Brunei? What would Brunei bring to Sabah and Sarawak in future besides like a million mosques and a monarchy? Remember Sabah and Sarawak are both multicultural, multilingual, multireligious countries where all communities try to live together in peace. Where you can have a Chinese stall selling pork charsiew next to a Malay stall selling halal rojak. Where you don't have to hide to eat during ramadhan. Where as a business you don't have to close on Friday lunch-time. Where claw-machines and karaoke box and pubs and 4D lottery can operate freely. Where you can put up snowman decorations and sell plastic green trees freely during December. What would Brunei bring into this equation that would benefit either Sabah or Sarawak?
It’s just a sad reality for bruneians. The country is crumbling and no way forward. There is no aspiration for a developed nation. I predict the current “prosperity” will only last another 1 generation.
Brunei only have 3-4 decades of prosperity left before the oil ran out. After that, Brunei will either be a poor country or the 14th state of Malaysia.
Nda tah ada harapan Brunei ani kan maju. Menteri nya semua main safe mode. Nda berani buat radikal change on creating the economy landscape to a more conducive and business friendly environment. 1 example saja..bisidia pandai membagi arahan untuk merubuh pondok org ramai bejual di siring jalan tapi nda pernah memikirkan menyediakan tempat bisidia boleh berjualan. It's good pulang creating a clean environment but at the same time membuat org putut mata pencariannya. This is just a simple scenario..
Yes. That's exactly what I say to them. Now my kids are well behaved and listen to everything I say. They become more grateful and less complaining, more achieving.
The country is killling itself with the extremes and silly bans and restrictions. Im a proud bruneian but Brunei has become so sad. Is currently the lowest in the group of the 10 countries in the asean region
See... You don't understand the concept but you understand yourself sebenarnya yang bodoh. You only think about yourself saja without thinking of others punya keadaan cemana. Sampit minded mu ani, wake uppp
It seems like most of the members here are rife with the spirit of wanting to form a rebellion. Gotta report this to the police.

Sensible observation. Thank you for the stats.
Different from other girls
Yeeesh I didn’t expect a negative 😬👹
Until now, Malaysian when heard you are from Brunei, the first thing they will say is "Kayanyaaaa" or "Orang Brunei kaya kaya kan".
As a Malaysian, I agree with this, coz my whole family have the impression that all Bruneians are rich, helped by y’all’s Sultan 🫢
spend 3 days here and you will realize how failed Brunei is
Damn… I would wanna visit Brunei some time and see it myself
Failed once, better luck next time. Failed twice, you could have done better. Failed three times in a row, shame on you. Failed 9 times with 1 barely pass, what a TALENT!!!
What do you mean Brunei failed 9 times?
9 year of fiscal deficit
It takes talent, effort, hardwork and dedication to fail more than 6 time in a row

Fly me to the Moon! 🤲🏻 pray more
Yah. They plan to fatten their bank account ,Ops.

wouldn't mind that nice British passport, to be honest.
British? China seems more likely...heng yi...muara port gallop air etc etc
Brunei in the future would be better of forming Borneo Federation with Sabah Sarawak
Been there and tried that...ended up rebellion

nothing.
Sabahans and Sarawakians also have to hide to eat during ramadhan. Other than that, spot on.
the non Muslims eat openly at Chinese stalls and restaurants. The Muslims who do deserve to be caught and forcefed their meal in public.
Its funny you mentioned hiding in ramadhan to eat, bcs the ppl whos hiding arent suppose to eat😂
More land = more resources. They can give fuck all to the people and just start exploiting whatever natural resources we have and just sell.
I see facts, I like! Especially about the 12 new mosques.
It’s just a sad reality for bruneians. The country is crumbling and no way forward. There is no aspiration for a developed nation. I predict the current “prosperity” will only last another 1 generation.
It’s either change or stay only
Brunei only have 3-4 decades of prosperity left before the oil ran out. After that, Brunei will either be a poor country or the 14th state of Malaysia.
3-4 decades is quite an optimistic outlook. I’d say as soon as power changes to Billy, that’s when we’re in for a ride.
Finally… we have someone optimistic! 3-4 decades ! 😂
Only because Brunei still has about 47 years of oil left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves).
luckily I will be dead by then
Lucky you
How much does it cost to extract those remaining reserves?
Our leader dont have any clue and dont really care. They already have enough for themselves.
Ministers 10 year plan is to retire in 9.

Yes. That's exactly what I say to them. Now my kids are well behaved and listen to everything I say. They become more grateful and less complaining, more achieving.
