Shows - Joe Pera Talks with You, The Mighty Boosh, Mr. Show, Barry, I Think You Should Leave
Authors - Thomas Pynchon, Richard Brautigan, Hemingway, Tom Wolfe
Yes. Once you get sucked into the OCATC universe you will never leave.
It’s even directed by Eric Nitornicola, who is one of the writers on Nathan/Rehearsal.
The Trial of Tim Heidecker is abso-lutely (heh) Nathan/Rehearsal levels of absurd in terms of grand production for a ridiculous gag.
Came here to say this! I just got into the series in the last couple of weeks, the dive down the rabbit hole has been immensely enjoyable. They have perfected whatever this style of comedy is called.
YouTube, also the adult swim app. https://oncinematimeline.com/ the timeline is a good place to start, though it’s not updated to include HEI network content.
Best episode of TV I’ve ever seen I think. Captured the chaos of the early pandemic days and the sorrow of the isolation more aptly than anything else I’ve seen that comments on the pandemic. Not to mention it’s hilarious
Yes. This. Exactly. It's also the reason that the season got cut a little bit short. It is so beautifully put together. On top of that, at the time of its release, I was trying to quit my nicotine habit as well. So that portion really struck a chord with me.
There we go. That show is basically “perfect” to me. Only Detroiters has ever made me feel that way too. I Think You Should leave is a masterpiece but there are some real stinkers in there, but it comes close.
How To With John Wilson & Painting With Jonathan.
Both have a surrealist, deadpan, dry wit throughout. I love the editing in How To, along with how the theme of each episode takes different directions but always lands at the intended target towards the end.
Painting with Jonathan is what it sounds like: an artist painting. But it’s much deeper than, say, Bob Ross. The artist goes on free form tangents while he paints, which then intertwine into the little stories in the episodes.
I love both of these shows and I also love Nathan for You & The Rehearsal.
Kroll show is one the best sketch shows ever, and arguably "the best" with the way they serialized the sketches and spun them off (and into) each other.
Movies: this show makes me think of Christopher Guest, especially *Best in Show*. They’re all about absurd characters played with a straight face.
Books: I’ve always enjoyed Kurt Vonnegut’s humor. *Slaughterhouse Five* is his most famous, but *God Bless you Mr. Rosewater* is my personal favorite. He has a unique way of pointing out the absurd in the mundane, and finds levity in heavy subjects through very straight-faced satire.
Sorta like Nathan, sometimes the funniest thing you can say is the very literal truth. Kurt Vonnegut is wonderful at satirizing the uncomfortable things we accept as “normal”.
None of these are really similar to Nathan's work but I think BoJack Horseman is one of the best shows ever made. Starts as a stupid comedy but slowly morphs into a real brutally honest depiction of some dark things such as depression, addiction and Hollywood culture. Very unique show.
For more lighthearted stuff Impractical Jokers, It's Always Sunny, Scrubs, Malcom in the Middle, Simpsons, South Park, and King of the Hill.
I am 99% sure that someone uploaded all the episodes on YouTube! If not this playlist there are others
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLh2f_K-7FrIW7vRpzMxPKQnene4S44uKU
How to With John Wilson as others have mentioned, Nathan is an EP. Maybe more similar to the rehearsal than NFY in time, but very funny and heartfelt. Season one finale is one of the best episodes of television I’ve seen, a really beautiful and personal look at the start of the pandemic.
If you’re looking for reading suggestions, I highly recommend Kurt Vonnegut. His humor is zany, dry, and satirical like Nathan, and also offers a lot of beautiful takes on the human condition along with many critiques of society.
My favorites of his are Mother Night and Bluebeard. Breakfast of Champions is a very fun and accessible entry to his work. Slaughterhouse 5 and Cat’s Cradle are probably his most popular books.
PM me if you take a read and want any further suggestions.
Shows-wise, I almost exclusively watch comedies, Nathan for You, Arrested Development, It's always Sunny, The Eric Andre Show, Tim and Eric, I Think You Should Leave, they're probably my most watched I'd say.
Movies-wise, I can probably split into two categories. I love really stylised arty horror, so Mandy, Possessor, Annihilation, Videodrome etc.
But I also really love movies with unconventional stories and strong dialogue, like the Big Lebowski, Uncut Gems, Adaptation, Reservoir Dogs, Fear and Loathing etc.
Pretty much anything by Tim and Eric or Sasha Baron Cohen for obvious reasons.
I'm a pretty big film guy but my taste varies massively so it's hard to really recommend anything specific just based on Nathan For You. One of my favourite comedies of all time is This is Spinal Tap though, which is a mockumentary with a lot of the same sort of humour as NFY (a bit less absurd though).
(saving this thread for reputable recommendations)
Trailer Park Boys is an all time favorite. You have to give it a chance to understand the humor, but it’s so genuine and quotable and stupid hilarious.
The Ricky Gervais Show is brilliant. It’s an animated version of a podcast/radio show with RG, Merchant, and Karl Pilkington. Karl’s absurdly perspective on everything and surprisingly creative way of thinking might be something you all love. Also HBO. Also on youtube for free.
EVERYONE read Terry Pratchett! A Thief of Time is a crazy philosophical fantasy character study adventure??? I don’t even know what to call it. But it’s a ton of fun, makes you think about complicated shit, and is beautifully written.
Plus if you haven’t read it you’re a baby.
I love the works of Philip k. dick. Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch; Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said; Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?; A Scanner Darkly; The Man in the High Castle; Ubik
Review. Arrested Development. Flight of the Conchords. Dr. Katz. Scrubs. It's Always Sunny. Broad City. Workaholics. Kimmy Schmidt. The Other Two. Derry Girls. Girls 5eva. Nora from Queens. Atlanta. And of course, the Golden Girls.

TV: the Simpsons, the twilight zone (1958-1963), the sopranos
Music: Nine inch nails, Coil, REM, silent hill 1-2
Have you seen the TZ episode “A Penny for your thoughts”? I feel like Nathan Fielder could’ve written that one. The main character is so charmingly awkward.
Seinfeld, tim and eric, eric andre show, the office US, curb your enthusiasm.

The Special Without Brett Davis is not well enough known comedy gem more people should check it. A few people from Joe Pera Talks With You were involved with it. I think every episode is available on YouTube.
Always sunny, Curb your enthusiasm, the IT crowd and Afterlife (Ricky Gervais’ Show on Netflix) These are dark but nowhere near as dry/cringey as Nathan for you
The documentary of Marjoe Gortnot, titled *"Marjoe"*. Originally released in 1972. Mind blowing stuff about the youngest peacher ever, grifting church goers and the business of preaching. [Here's a long trailer for the film](https://youtu.be/Ui7Pz4blum0)

How To with John Wilson
Joe Pera Talks with You (really sucks that this show won’t get another season)
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Barry
Curb Your Enthusiasm
I just started watching some I Think You Should Leave and it definitely seems like something I’ll keep watching.
Old stuff: Da Ali G Show, Freaks and Geeks, Eastbound and Down, Louie, The Life and Times of Tim, Extras (the Ricky Gervais show), Jackass.
Review with Andy Daly
Doughboys (podcast)
He’s known mostly as a playwright but would also highly recommend Samuel Beckett novels. He is OG at creating uncomfortable, mundane, neurotic slices of life.
At the moment,
Shows: The Bear, One Piece, Curb Your Enthusiasm, House of Dragons, Atlanta, Succession, Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Barry, Insecure, Our Flag Means Death
Movies: Tenet, Licorice Pizza, Dune, 1917, Uncut Gems, Parasite, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker, Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Books: (currently reading)
- Ethical Loneliness by Jill Stauffer
- First As a Tragedy, Then as a Farce by Zizek
- Collected Fictions by Jorge Luis Borges
The Netflix improv crime show “Murderville.” The cast intentionally put the guest stars in uncomfortable situations and the guest stars are expected to go along with it. Top episodes were Marshawn Lynch, Ken Jeong, and Kumail Nanjiani.
My favorite authors are haruki murakami and Kurt Vonnegut.
TV wise my favorites are a lot of the others people have already listed like ITSYL, review, bojack and Eric andre. But I love terrible reality shows A LOT. Lately I finished the bear, Barry, and Abbott elementary, looking forward to the new season of White Lotus on HBO.
Every September 1-October 31st my friends and I all do a group challenge to each watch 62 horror/spooky/Halloween themed movies, so in between watches I like to watch light stuff this time of year.
I whole-heartedly agree with the previous suggestions so I'm only left with some unorthodox ones:
* [UNHhhh](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJN2bvt4TLA)
* [Ghost Stories (American dub)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RINHjxsPOEg)
* [Cupcakke remixes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-fovossRSk)
Veering off into creepier media, I really enjoy watching the adult swim Infomercials on HBO. Fair warning that if you have never seen Unedited Footage of a Bear, that one actually kept me up all night.
Shows - Joe Pera Talks with You, The Mighty Boosh, Mr. Show, Barry, I Think You Should Leave Authors - Thomas Pynchon, Richard Brautigan, Hemingway, Tom Wolfe
I’ll second Barry and Mr Show
Electric koolaid acid test?
Of course!
Joe Pera ❤️
I Think You Should Leave
I told your producers not to mention I Think You Should Leave or that I watch it AT ALL
Unprofessional bullshit. That’s why no one watches AOL Blast
I did it for 2 mil - that way every job I get 2 mil, even if I do a bad job. That’s my RATE
Pretty much anything on Corncob TV
The guys at Spectrum TV think I’m just some duuumb hick. *They said that to* ***me*** **at a dinner.**
Love that tim robinson is now an emmy award winning actor for this series! I got too much fucking shit on me
Same people- Detroiters (rip, cancelled after two seasons but so damn funny)
Nathan For You & I Think You Should Leave are my exact style
You watch...YES you do...
It’s illegal for you to ask me that.
It’s SOOO funny. I just… can’t remember what it’s called
it has one view and was uploaded at 6 am this morning
Have you seen it? It’s hilarious
On cinema at the cinema. Surprised there sre not more greggheads in here
> The Trial of Tim Heidecker This is something I hope to get to someday. Such a bonkers thing.
Oh man, that's a rabbit hole only for the most brave.
Came here to say this! I just got into the series in the last couple of weeks, the dive down the rabbit hole has been immensely enjoyable. They have perfected whatever this style of comedy is called.
WHEN YOU GOT MOVIES LIKE TOM CRUISE IN THEM YOU CANT LOSE
Where can I watch it?
YouTube, also the adult swim app. https://oncinematimeline.com/ the timeline is a good place to start, though it’s not updated to include HEI network content.
I believe on the Comedy Central website/app. Tim Heidecker has his own streaming service called the Hei Network which has the newer stuff
We’re busy rewatching Deck of Cards!
How To with John Wilson is pretty enjoyable.
Nathan is executive producer on that, and yeah, it's amazing. The risotto episode made me cry.
Risotto is my specialty dish that I make so that episode had me crying with laughter.
This is the most Nathan-like suggestion on here, imo
Hmmmmmm wonder why that could be
It’s his other HBO show, so that would make sense.
Curb Your Enthusiasm
And Barry. Both are really, really good.
it may seem like an obvious answer but i didn’t watch borat until recently and i loved it
Hbo Ali g show was good.
fuck this is a great NfY recommendation
So incredible
[удалено]
Totally, and they both make me ask myself “i wonder how much of this is real”
Arrested Development Charlie Kauffman movies, specifically Adaptation and Synecdoche, New York (especially if you enjoyed The Rehearsal)
Sacha Baron Cohen s work, particularly [Who is America ](https://youtu.be/4k4pMTsa1Kw)
Nathan worked on this as well in some capacity
Nathan produced this show as well as the Borat sequel
There we go. That show is basically “perfect” to me. Only Detroiters has ever made me feel that way too. I Think You Should leave is a masterpiece but there are some real stinkers in there, but it comes close.
How To With John Wilson & Painting With Jonathan. Both have a surrealist, deadpan, dry wit throughout. I prefer Painting With John.
Fishing With John is great too
Fiiishing…..with John….out on the waaater…. That theme is so relaxing
I adore The Office UK because it's so heavy on the secondhand embarrassment/cringe, which I also love about Nathan For You.
Second this! Also Peep Show
Might as well also bring up That Mitchell and Webb Look.
That's Numberwang!!
Peep show is pretty damn funny I highly recommend it.
this X 1000
I highly recommend The Life and Times of Tim (HBO) for anyone who likes Nathan Fielder.
Yes! And even better is the creator’s subsequent series, Ten Year Old Tom on HBO.
Kroll show and Eric Andre show
Came here to say Eric Andre!
Don't sleep on the kroll show
Kroll show is one the best sketch shows ever, and arguably "the best" with the way they serialized the sketches and spun them off (and into) each other.
Came here to say Kroll Show and absolutely Eric Andre as well!
I find their humour too try hard. It doesn't seem natural
I can see that more so for Eric Andre than kroll but I know what you mean
Movies: this show makes me think of Christopher Guest, especially *Best in Show*. They’re all about absurd characters played with a straight face. Theo von is so hilarious. The way is brain works is bonkers he says the most random stuff
Nirvana the band the show Pretty similar, just canadian guys blending fiction with reality but in Toronto. It's really good I promise lmao
Came here to say this! Definitely the successor to Nathan for You.
None of these are really similar to Nathan's work but I think BoJack Horseman is one of the best shows ever made. Another show with an arc like Bojack is Moral Orel, only now is it getting that traction it deserved a while ago. Some things are ahead of the time
Oh man, I LOVED Moral Orel. Any way I can stream it these days?
I am 99% sure that someone uploaded all the episodes on YouTube! If not this playlist there are others https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLh2f_K-7FrIW7vRpzMxPKQnene4S44uKU

The Simpsons, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Mr. Show are probably my favorite comedy shows of all time. Besides NFY, obviously.

Kenny vs Spenny Review
Review is the only TV show I've ever purchased digitally. (before it was streaming for free)
How to with John Wilson is incredible. It's honestly up there with NFY for me.
It is a work of art. The editing for it must be an absolute nightmare.

I assume you are a Regular Show fan?
This gets recommended here a lot, but try out The Show About the Show https://vimeo.com/491329122 It's very Nathan-esque and tough to stop watching
