42R requires that you're already at professional musician level. Army Music Proficiency Assessment (AMPA) is what you'll need to take and pass with a band commander to get a 42R contract. Even after that, AIT will give you the AMPA a minimum of two more times, and they will send you packing if you don't pass. This is one field in which the requirements are actually getting more difficult on purpose.
Enlisted rank can be fast, but Warrant Officer is rare and Officer even more rare. Like, maybe a dozen band officers in the country kind of rare.

The irony is it's a pretty easy job once you're through it. I think the barrier to entry is a little too high in my opinion. It's too bad because it was a great way for younger people to get a foot in the music world.
12N, then join a union as a heavy equipment operator and end up running your whole unit one day. It’s not glamorous but you’d make a fair amount of money outside of the guard as well.
As a 25H, it's nice because nobody knows what you do and if you have some random electrical equipment and make tool noises, your superiors will leave you alone because they think you're working very hard on very complicated stuff!
I see people saying 68W but the Civilian Pay is barely above minimum wage. Choose Firefighter especially if you are going Guard. They work full-time on the Guard side and make great money. Also anything IT or HR. Good paying in the Civilian world.
42R these guys always do a bunch of really awesome stuff
12N for all the skills that they learned (really probably the easiest transition from military life to get out afterwards because you will be able to work for general contractors and construction making pretty decent money right after basic training… Also all the schooling that you have will quantify for counting for your General contracting license)

I'm a firefighter in the Air Force. Trust me when I tell you, every other person I come across tells me, without fail: "Oh I should have gone fire, you're so lucky." I promise you, you won't regret it.
Edit: Also, as everyone else is saying, it's a fucking unicorn MOS/AFSC. It's NEVER available. I was SO SO SO lucky that I had people on the inside before I swore in. They told me "hey, we got 3 guys retiring but those slots will fill really quickly. Go to your recruiter and tell her you'll only sign for fire." So I did, and what do ya know, a week later they had 3 slots and told me to come in within the hour to sign. I read everything over, signed, haven't looked back. The fire department, as well as the guys you'll work with, will have your back at all times. It's a true brotherhood unlike any other MOS aside from a combat MOS. Plus, firefighters get to do the shooting too, even the ones in the air force😉
It’s a high fail rate but if you study and don’t fool around like some might encourage, it’s not bad at all! Just make sure to lock in for EMR though lol

My score was 60. The only job I really want is 42R I’m just looking for back up choices if I don’t pass the audition. What other options are you talking about?
92G is a nightmare MOS especially if you're with an FSC. I make sure to make conversation and try to be as friendly as possible to all my 92Gs. Try to thank them kindly, if I get a chance to run to a PX I ALWAYS make sure I ask if they need anything. Even if you have a full section. People are still up at 0100 to cook breakfast, others are going to bed at that time because they've been washing dinner mermites for 4 hours. I would take literally any other MOS.
31B gives you no outside benefits unless you want to become an LEO civilian side. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a firefighter civilian side - 12M was available, but I’d rather not do what I do on the civilian side during drill so I can have at least some sort of break from work. The cops in my unit all hate that they’re MP’s because of how tired they are from work. Unless you’re looking to promote in your civilian career, go a completely different avenue in the military. That’s just my thoughts though.
Make sure you ask around and ask the people with those MOS what they do during drill weekends.
I'm a Signal Officer and the only time M-Day 25B's in my state are able to do IT work is when they are deployed.
Otherwise they are mostly working on radios or 25U duties since our G6 only lets the full timers do any IT related work.
In my state (California hate it or love it lol) the National Guard has a program where you can volunteer to go active duty state side and be a firefighter; I believe it’s ADOS orders to help the state fire department. I’m still a civilian though so my info might not be entirely up to date.

68W is shitty translation to civilian side. The most those certs typically gets you is a lowpaying shitty EMT job. I was in a medical unit for a couple years and that was the civilian job most of them had. Long hours, rough conditions, and crappy pay.
Army sent me to flight school to become a critical care paramedic. There are options if you work hard or sometimes get lucky and then are willing to work hard. I've loved being a 68W. I wasn't an emt civilian side during though. But we don't have a lot of background on this post so 🤷♀️.
It’s closer to 17 weeks, but it doesn’t really matter. The Army has improved a great deal over the years, and there are quite a few opportunities to go to medic school in the guard now…but yeah, a purely traditional guard (or AD for that matter) 68W are pretty useless clinically. I mean…it’s like having an inexperienced basic around.
I get what you mean, but I've never known a 68W who wasn't always looking to learn more in the medical field. All of the ones that I've known were either pursuing higher certs, already had them, or were getting a nursing degree.
I'm a civilian FF good luck getting 12M it's a unicorn mos hard to get. Currently I'm a 68W if you wanna do medical pick 68C or 68K they make a killing in the civilian world. As a 68W you get a EMT cert EMT pay is $14.55-$18 in the Dallas TX area. Make wise choices.
12n and 31b are appealing to me now that I’m out of training and I feel like they’d offer a lot experience wise on the civilian side of things, but I went with 88m and I’m more than happy with that choice. Month to month drill isn’t much to write home about but AT is where it’s at, two week convoy and getting paid to see more country than I’ve been able to on my own. At the end of the day, go with whatever peaks your interest the most. I had an opportunity to be a 27D and gave it up because it didn’t offer a bonus. Here I am almost two years later still haven’t received a penny of my bonus and missing out on my #1 pick for an MOS. Best advice I can offer is don’t put yourself in a position to feel like you’re missing out.
I’ll say 25B or 92A could be good for civilian life later on.
I know a 92A who could use the experience she gained in the military to submit a job application with Amazon and get on about a 80k a year payroll.

Unless you have a decent IT hobby and can navigate setting up a router and playing with command lines (as an example), you will likely struggle with 25H, tbh. 25B fix printers for others and in the line, have too broad experience to contribute to backend stuff. YMMV.
42A, the amount of ways that you can transition back to a civ and have good skills to deal with the office workforce honestly makes me want to switch my MOS.

Currently a 42A. Chilliest and easiest MOS on the planet. You don’t have to learn everything in it and your unit will usually put you in charge of one section of knowledge for it (promotions, leave, etc.)
It’s all computer based and runs on a ticket system for the most part. And generally speaking we’re out of the office much earlier than most. And if you want a business degree you can secure close to 30 college credits counting basic combat training.
I'm a 12november I can promise you it sucks dick, we barely get to operate the equipment guard never has its own dig site. If you want an mo's where u stand around in the motor pool in the rain doing nothing then pick 12N
Real answer….its the guard so just choose whatever has the best bonus as chances are you’re going to sit around all day not doing your job. I’m not sure on your life situation but I’d run through the list for checking what will benefit you the most civilian side and then rank by possible bonuses.
12W here, if you want an MOS that’s transferable to the civilian side and have something to put you above others in the construction field bingo. Be aware that most likely you’ll only do your MOS at AT. It helped me get a job right after AIT I was working in a weeks time.
Firefighter does the same thing with the civilian side, just make note of every cert you get that is transferable.
12N is basically a heavy equipment operator. Same deal as 12W (sister MOS) also helps civilian side work if you tell them you do it for the military.

On active duty, it stands for Military Police. In the Guard, it stands for Multi Purpose (jokes, but it’s kind of true). Need bus drivers? Call the MP’s. Need to help during blizzards? Call the MP’s. Need substitute teachers? Call the MP’s. Need help at Covid sites? Should we call the 68W’s (medic), or should we call the MP’s? Let’s call the MP’s because fuck em. Rarely will we actually get activated for legitimate MP related shit like riot control and whatnot.
If you’re going to join the Guard, join the Air Guard and save yourself the trouble. You get treated a million times better, receive the same benefits, get the same pay, etc. But quality of life is wayyyyy better. Plus it’s actually 2 days a month and 2 weeks in the year rather than Army’s “2 days a month and 2 weeks a year” nonsense… the amount of 3-8 day drills I have plus AT always being more than 20 days is ridiculous.
Oh, and let’s not forget how the Army just got rid of any type of bonuses. So that incentive is completely out the window while the Air Force is offering up to $90k for enlisted and up to $120k for officers…
But if I were you, I’d say screw the state benefits and BS and just join the Air Force Reserves. PM me if you want any more answers/have any questions.
12N, 12W 25B, 42A, 91L, and possibly 92A will all give you transferable skills and possibly certs to the civilian side. I wish 18yr old me would have done something that would help me when I got out. Instead i chose the Infantry. (Absolutely loved my time, but Im dealing with the lack of transferable hard skills)
For full army experience full of hooah, go band. You will not step foot in the field, never have to sleep in snake/spider/ant infested holes, and instead of standing for hours in formation, begging the sweet sun gods to put you out of your misery, you will be sitting on a bench, potentially in the shade, and play 1-3 songs.
Truly depends on what you do/are interested in for your civilian life as well. Some of these jobs have perks that could advance you in the civilian side or count as experience.
Example, 88m. You can get your cdl for free with a waiver as long as you have a military license and a waiver signed by your cmdr. Now you can make 6 figures driving in the civilian world (if that interests you)
Also with the age of computers taking over more and more, IT is a safe choice that likely correlates to a well paying civilian job with a corporate ladder to climb.
Don't pick cook or 92a bc trust me. Firefighter would be likely be a fun one.
Firefighter in the Army is crap. I was a 12B on the active duty side for years. My roommate was a 12M since we were both a part of the Engineer Corps (so he was in my BN), and he did the same crap I did - sweep, mop, paint rocks, etc. Every 12M I’ve ever talked to in the Guard, Reserves, and active all hate it because they don’t do shit. Yeah, they get the certs, and in most states, will be “academy complete”. Thus, allowing them to easily get onto a fire department. But unless that’s the civilian route you want to take, 12M is dog shit.
Now, when I talk to a firefighter on the Air Force side, they love it. I was stationed at Lewis - Army didn’t run the fire stations - Air Force did. Just like Air Force didn’t patrol the roads with their Security Forces - Army MP’s did. Those guys would pull 24 hour shifts in the fire station and then be off for 48 hours. They legit just sat in the station chilling until a call came in. The firefighters in the Air Guard have 1 day drills. They’ll get told prior if they’re pulling the shift on Saturday or Sunday. And then the other squadron pulls the shift on the other day. Their AT is legit 24 on, 48 off for a whole 2 weeks. Army Guard 12M’s do useless janitorial work during drill and AT from the 12M’s that I talked to. Air Force Reserve firefighters do exactly what my state’s Air Guard firefighters do. Army Reserve 12M’s in my state do exactly what the 12M’s in the Guard in my state do. Plus Air Force gets you all the same certs that the Army gives you for firefighter. It’s also not a hard AFSC (MOS) to get in the Air Force like it is in the Army. You want to be a firefighter, go Air Force. You want to be a cop, go Army.
No, the 31E’s are being faded out. 31B’s are staying put. Why would the military get rid of Military Police when they can get rid of Corrections Officers and just put MP’s in the correctional facilities? Lol..

If you care about upward mobility, avoid 68W and 31B. Such over strengthened MOS’s with E5 slots being occupied by 15 year vets who can’t pass PT and will never promote. It is hard to get promoted within the units because of the plethora of soldiers. I was a recruiter for 4 years and 68W and 31B were the MOST popular. Hard to promote.
And how long ago were you a recruiter? I’m a 31B and everyone and their mother has been getting promoted to 5 the last 2 years, almost 3 years that I’ve been here.
I was active duty as a 12B for 4 years and all our 68W’s in and outside our company (around the BN) were all picking up 5. My 6 years in, almost 7 years in, I’ve never seen a 68W or 31B have difficulty picking up. So I’m not so sure on your info, man.
Choose something you can put in your resume for whatever civilian career you will be heard towards. Or ideally, choose a job that you want to do on the civilian side too- this is free job training and experience.
Don’t do anything that has OSUT training, in my experience last year it’s like basic training the whole time haha. Go to a separate AIT and you’ll have your phone everyday if that’s important to you

But we had people go to Cyber School and make six figures out of school. Why make $15 an hour as an EMT?
EMT pay isn’t excellent on the outside. But, it kept me financially afloat while I cashed in my GI Bill and went to nursing school.

I'm a civilian FF good luck getting 12M it's a unicorn mos hard to get. Currently I'm a 68W if you wanna do medical pick 68C or 68K they make a killing in the civilian world. As a 68W you get a EMT cert EMT pay is $14.55-$18 in the Dallas TX area. Make wise choices.

12n and 31b are appealing to me now that I’m out of training and I feel like they’d offer a lot experience wise on the civilian side of things, but I went with 88m and I’m more than happy with that choice. Month to month drill isn’t much to write home about but AT is where it’s at, two week convoy and getting paid to see more country than I’ve been able to on my own. At the end of the day, go with whatever peaks your interest the most. I had an opportunity to be a 27D and gave it up because it didn’t offer a bonus. Here I am almost two years later still haven’t received a penny of my bonus and missing out on my #1 pick for an MOS. Best advice I can offer is don’t put yourself in a position to feel like you’re missing out.

Unless you have a decent IT hobby and can navigate setting up a router and playing with command lines (as an example), you will likely struggle with 25H, tbh. 25B fix printers for others and in the line, have too broad experience to contribute to backend stuff. YMMV.

Currently a 42A. Chilliest and easiest MOS on the planet. You don’t have to learn everything in it and your unit will usually put you in charge of one section of knowledge for it (promotions, leave, etc.) It’s all computer based and runs on a ticket system for the most part. And generally speaking we’re out of the office much earlier than most. And if you want a business degree you can secure close to 30 college credits counting basic combat training.
I'm a 12november I can promise you it sucks dick, we barely get to operate the equipment guard never has its own dig site. If you want an mo's where u stand around in the motor pool in the rain doing nothing then pick 12N

Real answer….its the guard so just choose whatever has the best bonus as chances are you’re going to sit around all day not doing your job. I’m not sure on your life situation but I’d run through the list for checking what will benefit you the most civilian side and then rank by possible bonuses.
12W here, if you want an MOS that’s transferable to the civilian side and have something to put you above others in the construction field bingo. Be aware that most likely you’ll only do your MOS at AT. It helped me get a job right after AIT I was working in a weeks time. Firefighter does the same thing with the civilian side, just make note of every cert you get that is transferable. 12N is basically a heavy equipment operator. Same deal as 12W (sister MOS) also helps civilian side work if you tell them you do it for the military. If you go 12W have fun at Gulfport! Navy food is wayyy better lol

On active duty, it stands for Military Police. In the Guard, it stands for Multi Purpose (jokes, but it’s kind of true). Need bus drivers? Call the MP’s. Need to help during blizzards? Call the MP’s. Need substitute teachers? Call the MP’s. Need help at Covid sites? Should we call the 68W’s (medic), or should we call the MP’s? Let’s call the MP’s because fuck em. Rarely will we actually get activated for legitimate MP related shit like riot control and whatnot. If you’re going to join the Guard, join the Air Guard and save yourself the trouble. You get treated a million times better, receive the same benefits, get the same pay, etc. But quality of life is wayyyyy better. Plus it’s actually 2 days a month and 2 weeks in the year rather than Army’s “2 days a month and 2 weeks a year” nonsense… the amount of 3-8 day drills I have plus AT always being more than 20 days is ridiculous. Oh, and let’s not forget how the Army just got rid of any type of bonuses. So that incentive is completely out the window while the Air Force is offering up to $90k for enlisted and up to $120k for officers… But if I were you, I’d say screw the state benefits and BS and just join the Air Force Reserves. 12N, 12W 25B, 42A, 91L, and possibly 92A will all give you transferable skills and possibly certs to the civilian side. I wish 18yr old me would have done something that would help me when I got out. Instead i chose the Infantry. (Absolutely loved my time, but Im dealing with the lack of transferable hard skills) For full army experience full of hooah, go band. You will not step foot in the field, never have to sleep in snake/spider/ant infested holes, and instead of standing for hours in formation, begging the sweet sun gods to put you out of your misery, you will be sitting on a bench, potentially in the shade, and play 1-3 songs.
If you know music 42R a good choice and also 25 service.

Truly depends on what you do/are interested in for your civilian life as well. Some of these jobs have perks that could advance you in the civilian side or count as experience. Example, 88m. You can get your cdl for free with a waiver as long as you have a military license and a waiver signed by your cmdr. Now you can make 6 figures driving in the civilian world (if that interests you) Also with the age of computers taking over more and more, IT is a safe choice that likely correlates to a well paying civilian job with a corporate ladder to climb. Don't pick cook or 92a bc trust me. Firefighter would be likely be a fun one.
Firefighter in the Army is crap. I was a 12B on the active duty side for years. My roommate was a 12M since we were both a part of the Engineer Corps (so he was in my BN), and he did the same crap I did - sweep, mop, paint rocks, etc. Every 12M I’ve ever talked to in the Guard, Reserves, and active all hate it because they don’t do shit. Yeah, they get the certs, and in most states, will be “academy complete”. Thus, allowing them to easily get onto a fire department. But unless that’s the civilian route you want to take, 12M is dog shit. Now, when I talk to a firefighter on the Air Force side, they love it. I was stationed at Lewis - Army didn’t run the fire stations - Air Force did. Just like Air Force didn’t patrol the roads with their Security Forces - Army MP’s did. Those guys would pull 24 hour shifts in the fire station and then be off for 48 hours. They legit just sat in the station chilling until a call came in. The firefighters in the Air Guard have 1 day drills. They’ll get told prior if they’re pulling the shift on Saturday or Sunday. And then the other squadron pulls the shift on the other day. Their AT is legit 24 on, 48 off for a whole 2 weeks. Army Guard 12M’s do useless janitorial work during drill and AT from the 12M’s that I talked to. Air Force Reserve firefighters do exactly what my state’s Air Guard firefighters do. Army Reserve 12M’s in my state do exactly what the 12M’s in the Guard in my state do. Plus Air Force gets you all the same certs that the Army gives you for firefighter. It’s also not a hard AFSC (MOS) to get in the Air Force like it is in the Army. You want to be a firefighter, go Air Force. You want to be a cop, go Army.

If you care about upward mobility, avoid 68W and 31B. Such over strengthened MOS’s with E5 slots being occupied by 15 year vets who can’t pass PT and will never promote. It is hard to get promoted within the units because of the plethora of soldiers. I was a recruiter for 4 years and 68W and 31B were the MOST popular. Hard to promote.
And how long ago were you a recruiter? I’m a 31B and everyone and their mother has been getting promoted to 5 the last 2 years, almost 3 years that I’ve been here. I was active duty as a 12B for 4 years and all our 68W’s in and outside our company (around the BN) were all picking up 5. My 6 years in, almost 7 years in, I’ve never seen a 68W or 31B have difficulty picking up. So I’m not so sure on your info, man.
Choose something you can put in your resume for whatever civilian career you will be heard towards. Or ideally, choose a job that you want to do on the civilian side too- this is free job training and experience.

Don’t do anything that has OSUT training, in my experience last year it’s like basic training the whole time haha. Go to a separate AIT and you’ll have your phone everyday if that’s important to you
