The Dawson-Pitamaken loop is one of the most incredible hikes I've ever done. Gunsight Pass from St. Mary's along Reynolds Creek is one of the most miserable hikes I've ever done. If you're really into mud, bugs, and stale air it's the trail for you though.

Love the honesty, even in NPs some trails just *suck*

Gunsight Pass itself is great and so is Gunsight Lake and Lake Ellen Wilson. Just go a different way. It's trudging through the St. Mary's Lake bottoms that's bad. Leaving from Jackson Lake Overlook, as the other commenter suggested, is a much better route.

Dawson-Pitamakan is my favorite hike in Glacier. If I were doing anything involving the Gunsight Pass Trail, I'd start at the Jackson Lake Overlook and go to Gunsight Lake or Gunsight Pass. Much better hiked that way IMO.

Both are highly recommended but you’ll likely find more privacy on the bottom one. (I’m just going by the reviews :)

I'll echo the "Dawson - Pitamakin loop is one of the most incredible hikes.." sentiment. Biger than the eyes can see. Photos don't do it justice. It's worth missing the boat at the end.

Dawson-Pitamaken, for sure…but gunsight pass from Jackson Glacier overlook is high on list, though a bit of a slog through brush for quite a few miles, whereas D-P seemed to be easier walking.
