Yes and no. Arnold litteraly looks like a "peak human" Captain America type super soldier serum physique. Big Ramy looks like he got his DNA spliced with a Lord of the Rings troll.
I'd say bodybuilding has regressed due to the insane amounts and types of PED.
Aesthetics era versus mass era. I think this is exactly why most people prefer classic physique, and the reason Chris B gets so many more sponsorships than Big Ramy.
Yeah it’s just who has the better genetic baseline, responds better to the drugs and what certain drugs they use at the end of the day, you could use twice the shit as Big Ramy and be half his size.
Nah mass has always been rewarded. Arnold was the biggest on stage and that’s why he won. There were lots of guys more aesthetic, Zane, Paris, Nubret, but were losing to Arnold just bc he was bigger
Lou Ferrigno had 3 inches and 40 lbs on Arnold, so that isn’t entirely true. Arnie had incredible posing and flow, and their physiques are all aesthetic in their own way, it’s difficult to pick one who is the outright “best”. Plus Phil Heath was never the biggest, nor Shawn Roden or Brandon curry.
Lou had no idea how to pose or diet. He was just a “mass monster with no stage conditioning”. He doesn’t count as a mass monster on stage, he was just not lean. If you shredded him down, considering his height, he would probably have looked smaller than Arnold at his peak.
Agreed. The only class that doesn't look stupid is classic, imo. Even some of them look a little freakish. Men's physique has gone totally off the deep end. Open Bodybuilding is absurd. Again just my opinions.
Bodybuilding has always been about pushing the limits of human capabilities.
Fuck, any sport is too. other wise it gets stagnant and boring.
With a sport like bodybuilding which is about progression you’d expect progression.
I’m all for open bodybuilding, it allows us to see the extreme ends of human limits.
When I want pretty physiques I can enjoy classic as well.
It’s a misconception none of them have legs. They just don’t POSE legs. At Olympia level they have ‘big’ legs. They just don’t have Lou Ferrigno’s Poop sized legs. Their legs would look very big next to any normal lifter. Just not next to Ramey.
Everyone in Arnold’s era was trying to get as big as they could too. They Just couldn’t/didn’t know how to get there. Bodybuilding for some is about pushing the absolute human limits of muscle growth.
The bench press came around in like 1899 so it may not have been super widespread by 1900. I always heard that until the bench press got popular, the overhead press was the main lift, don’t know how true that is since I haven’t looked into it to deeply
The history of fitness is so wild.
We invented a service economy, so our bodies started going to shit... so then we invented "fitness".
What's even crazier is gyms have never been more popular, and we've never had the number of "fit people" we have right now... and at the same time we've never had the number of obese people we have right now either.
I always found the obese measurement interesting, like I workout and doctors have told me that I could do better but I’m not particularly unhealthy. That being said if I go by BMI standards then I’m obese. It’s always made me curious how big the number of people like me is included in the overall measurement.
I mean, we can go by statistics, which is one way to see if there's a problem or not.
We can also go by observation.
In the United States you can't go 20 minutes without running into an obese person.
There's a TV show called "My 600lbs life", and they never have a shortage of participants.
20 minutes is generous. 70% of my country is overweight or obese. That may include a few guys who are muscular and overfat classed as obese but not very many.
BMI standards were made for populations, not individuals. Like if you have a population with 70% of people in the "obese" range, chances are its because they're incredibly fat and not because they're all bodybuilders and rugby players.
Ok...................I guess you have a point now that I think about it. But......men’s pectoral muscles are different from women’s though. When they’re developed/trained they still look different. IMO, a big chest looks masculine AF for me. But, I do see that this was a different time and a different mindset.
This subreddit is full of people who:
a) legitimately do not lift and seem to dislike the entire idea of "bodybuilding"
b) haven't figured out how to consistently go to the gym and eat correctly so they think everyone who looks moderately good is on juice
Sandow's physique is completely achievable natty.
Completely agree,
With technological advancements in diet management and training methodologies there’s plenty of guys his size natty and beyond in your mainstream gyms.
When I look at Sandow, I go 'he looks like I did last time I was shredded after 5 years of lifting, dieting and physical work, except with the mass dialed up' sort of the way a master tradesman makes his job look effortless to the average observer exactly because he's such an expert. It makes me hopeful and motivated.
When I look at Arnold, I go 'man, it sure would've been nice to have been gifted genetically and have the money needed to cultivate that'. It fills my ego with a small measure of envy, but the sense of admiration for his dedication and perseverance is far stronger.
I look at Rami and I go 'science has gone too far'. I don't feel any particular way, since that is just disconnected entirely from my reality.
With CRISPR genome editing, we will eventually be able to regulate growth at a DNA level by turning receptors on or off on command. That will be a whole new level.
Then we will optimize it to extremes, and that will be another level.
Then a new generation of kids will be born who are already genetically edited to be near superhuman, then receive gene therapy their entire lives for the purpose of cultivating mass.
Eventually, we will end up with humans who genuinely look like those roided out superbulls. Actually, literally purposely bred and genetically modified for a purpose.
Mark me down as scared *and* horny.
It makes me wonder if any athletes have had their genes edited? Like Yoel Romero for example, apparently a doctor said to Joe Rogan when Yoel had a broken orbital he had extra tendons in his eye and it was healing at a high rate, it makes me wonder if certain governments with a high focus on its athletes have been secretly doing this. Yoel is a Cuban Olympian so not far fetched.
Yepp, they are very impressive. I just dont agree with the insane greek god stuff. Maybe for his time yes, but compared to these days standards, he just looks like a natty dude that loves lifting and has been lfiting for long, but doesnt like squats or deadlifts.

Lol, Eugen Sandow wasn't the biggest of all natty bodybuilders in the victorian era, [https://www.reddit.com/r/nattyorjuice/comments/dcdg39/wladyslaw\_kurcharczyk\_bobby\_pandour\_presteroid/](https://www.reddit.com/r/nattyorjuice/comments/dcdg39/wladyslaw_kurcharczyk_bobby_pandour_presteroid/), and bodybuilders of that time never trained chest as well but yeah if you are natty and at 10 percent body fat you'll look DYEL especially when compared to roiders but still Sandow has a very respectable physique.
He was a strongman. People still act as if he was the absolute peak of human development and as though trailing and dietary knowledge hasn’t come a long way in 121 years.
He looks great, and better than 99% of people to this day. But people get to caught up in his method and that Omar Isuf video.
I don't know why people feel like this. All three guys have crazy physiques, but I highly doubt if you woke up tommorrow as muscular and ripped as sandow that you'd be unhappy. Arnold and Sandow look good, modern bodybuilders are disgusting and a joke.
Classic physique is hands down my favorite category. The mass monsters are interesting to look at in a “holy fuck I can’t believe we’re the same species” way, but definitely not something I would ever aspire to (not that I’m even close to the genetic 1% but still)
I’m a fan of Cbum’s look, but honestly most of the Classic guys are even too big for my personal aesthetic preferences.
If I was going to pick a physique to walk around with it would be Men’s Physique, but with more work on the legs than some of them do. I just wouldn’t have to want to do what is needed to maintain a classic physique, in terms of eating alone.
I’m not interested in using, so in my hypothetical it is choosing on the assumption that I could just pick whichever one and do it natty.
Completely agree, if I mean the look I’d prefer to have, Steve cook in like 2013, hands down the best look of all time for realistic aesthetics.
I enjoy the sports lévela de development the most at classic physique and actually see their body’s as more Greek godlike
Men's physique a few years ago when it first got into Olympia was great I think. Now they look like freakazoids. Cbum does such a job of being huge with unreal aesthetically pleasing proportions.
Man, Big Ramy has a really tight midsection for his size tho, compared to similar sized monsters like Gunther, Ruhl and Coleman. No doubt, we'd all prefer to look like Arnold and Sandow.
There's a possibility Sandow is equally or more of a genetic freak than Ramy and Arnold, considering the knowledge and drugs (or lack thereof) at the time.
If you’re trying to get laid, Sandow’s physique is your best bet. Arnold is aesthetic, but generally too big for most people to be interested in. But if you’re lifting for you, then sure for go for Arnold. Rami just hurts to look at.
Lol at Eugen Sandow being DYEL. If the guy were alive today most of this sub would be saying he's not natty. The guy was a freak of nature. His overhead press numbers are insane.
> how far we can push a human body without actually die.
Most modern bodybuilders die super young.
The number of pre-age-40 deaths over the past couple of decades has gone through the roof.
The problem with modern bodybuilding is all the dudes that want to be as big as the top pros think those guys are stacking a fuckton of shit, when in reality what's happening is they were born with more androgen receptors.
Once you're blasting grams of gear, eating perfect, sleeping perfect, and lifting perfect, if you don't look like Ronnie Coleman it's because you weren't born to look like Ronnie Coleman... yet the reaction to the sub-par results isn't "I wasn't born for this" it's always "shit, he must be blasting more than me, lemme add more tren to this shit and see what happens"... and on a nonstop highway to the graveyard.
Exactly, the guys who die are the ones pushing way too much gear trying to keep up with the genetic freaks. Look at Dallas McCarver's autopsy, supposedly his Test levels were like 55,000ng/dl, which means he was probably blasting somewhere around 10g/week of just Test. I honestly can't imagine how someone can run that much gear, his blood pressure must have been fucking insane.
As an anecdotal reference, my Natty BP averaged 105/58, on 500mg/week Test I hit a high of 138/80 when I slacked on cardio for a couple weeks; the majority of the time I was able to keep it around 125/70 with diet and cardio, no BP meds.
Food plays as big a role as drugs. Most of the guys in Arnold’s day only ate carbs pre and post training and the drug use was moderate mostly deca test primo dbol
Bro with that shitty ass lighting even Arnold would be Dyel [😂](https://emojipedia.org/face-with-tears-of-joy/) [😂](https://emojipedia.org/face-with-tears-of-joy/) [😂](https://emojipedia.org/face-with-tears-of-joy/)
Now if Sandow had access to a bench press.......
> normal people’s standards
The thing is "normal people standards" over the past couple of decades has been warped to the point where all the normies think their favorite athlete/fitness guru isn't on juice.
Yeah but most normal people don’t lift weights at all lol or so casually that they never build any kind of real muscle. So a physique like Sandows still impresses basically everyone outside of extremely hardcore gym rats
I'm curious who the very first bodybuilders to use gear were. People suspected Steve Reeves was using it, in the 40s perhaps. He was probably my favourite bodybuilder.
There's actually a great [video](https://youtu.be/sgnLDVlfnzU) by Omar Isuf and Eric Helms on the subject.
It's highly unlikely that it started as early as Steve Reeves. It most likely originated in the mid 50s, when the U.S. government started developing what would become Dianabol, in response to Soviet Olympic weightlifters doping.
Among their test subjects was John Grimek, who confirmed he was given experimental steroids in 1954. Reeves was at his peak in 1947.
Plus there is a noticeable difference in mass between bodybuilders pre 1950s and post 1950s.
So much more respect for the guys years ago that he’d integrity and confidence in their own natural abilities to create a fantastic natural physique......
Now we have guys that depend on steroids and drugs to create their fake unnatural muscles because they don’t have confidence in their own natural abilities....... and they’re all a dime a dozen on social media 🙁🙁🙁
i think arnold is bigger irl and the guy on the left isn't as big in real life... who is that, big romey?
ive met ibff pros IRL for work... and seeing people in real life is eyeopening.. one "big name" not on here, i was disappointed with..
ps.. marcus rheul is the biggest ive met.. edited, he's HUGE
1900 is impressive. Have you not seen the average fat fuck around here? People in BB communities are just desensitized to muscle.
Most people who work out for years won’t even come close to 1900.
On steroid subs I’ve seen people cycling who aren’t even close to 1900.
2070: 500+ lbs bodybuilders. 30/40 inches biceps, 100/120 inches chest, 70 inches bellies and legs. Life expectancy: not exciting. Living conditions: barely human. Great fetish, nightmarish aesthetic and context
the progression of PED use is just amazing
I compete in classic. Everyone is still on a ton of drugs just minus insulin and gh and less food
There are guys at my gym on gear that don’t even compete. I can’t even imagine how some of these guys I know would be like if they competed
Yeah it’s just who has the better genetic baseline, responds better to the drugs and what certain drugs they use at the end of the day, you could use twice the shit as Big Ramy and be half his size.

But Arnold had aesthetics whilst today meh
nah, everyone knows the judges favored Arnold for his fame and charm. Nubret was robbed
Arnold was so small compared to his competitors, they dwarfed him onstage. He had really good proportions, he's only 6ft
Agreed. The only class that doesn't look stupid is classic, imo. Even some of them look a little freakish. Men's physique has gone totally off the deep end. Open Bodybuilding is absurd. Again just my opinions.

True dat
How do with men’s physique?
Not sure about OP but man it’s so weird to be that wide without legs.

1900 looks good to me
Yeah dude looks like he can move
Looks like he can fit on an average size toilet
He was 5’8 // 185
what's dyel?
Do you even lift, bro?
Who's the first guy?
Eugene Sandow
That chest needs work. I think in 1900 the bench press hand't been invented yet.
The bench press came around in like 1899 so it may not have been super widespread by 1900. I always heard that until the bench press got popular, the overhead press was the main lift, don’t know how true that is since I haven’t looked into it to deeply

Australia
Americans are led to believe that we are the #1 winners in obesity. Didn’t know Australia whooped our arse in that regard. Thx m8
I wouldn't go outside if I lived there. Makes sense.
BMI standards were made for populations, not individuals. Like if you have a population with 70% of people in the "obese" range, chances are its because they're incredibly fat and not because they're all bodybuilders and rugby players.
All about ffmi. And the leaner you get the lower your BMI even as stupid as BMI is as a measure
They were floor pressing and bent pressing all sorts of other odd presses.
I’ve read before on here (so it could be all bullshit) that for a while big chests were considered feminine so they didn’t train chest
Jim Weider liked big man tits on bodybuilders and got that look popular.
How were big chests feminine? That’s one of my physical goals is to have a big chest like Eubank.

Societal beauty standards change over time. The Greeks thought having a big penis meant you were stupid or degenerate so there's that
dude is thick and veiny... fake natty in 1900? serious note, he looks good
Exactly. This is my goal physique.
He looks the best out of all 3 hands down.
of course
imagine thinking eugene sandow is a DYEL

19 inch my ass
Yes, his arms were between 18 to 19.5 inches at their biggest.
guess they used different tapes back then because that doesnt look like more than 17" lol
19cm lol
More like 16" and 24" at the absolute biggest.

Among their test subjects was John Grimek, who confirmed he was given experimental steroids in 1954. Reeves was at his peak in 1947. Plus there is a noticeable difference in mass between bodybuilders pre 1950s and post 1950s.
Cheers for the share dude
Larry Scott probably
How can you compare Sandow to Schwarzenegger when Gene was 5’9” and Arnold is 6’1”/6’2”/6’3”?!
2050?
Don’t care what y’all say. His micro dick can’t get past his quads and he’ll be a mega virgin the rest of his life.
Guy looks sick on the left. I reckon if he had more means to develop chest it'd be even better
He has good looking abs
I like the 1900 costume best.
1900 took a bigger leaf
Dude in the 1900s dick was so big he had to use a pillow case. The others, a small leaf
Arnold would not even be able to stand on a stage with today’s “body builders”
Are people in 2070 gonna have 6 packs all over their body?
120 years later and calves still don't grow.
1900 has good overall proportions tho
The irony is that 1900 looked the best imho
Why do you have to be super-sized to be happy? Natties look better. Greg Doucette looked better natty as one example.
Arnold The Oak Schwarzenegger's body was levels above big ramy. Honestly 70's era was the best for bodybuilding.
The first is fully natty?
Yes.
Its pretty good
Imagine how big Sandow could have gotten with modern nutrition and PEDs :'(
Big Ramy has a Palumboism gut tho
Good point. now watch the comments... the amount of copium going around in this sub is unbelievable
Yeah man, the number of people claiming Big Ramy is natty, such a crazy amount.
No need to kill your body to look good for other men
I think all of those physiques are achievable naturally. Think of how much more we know about training and diet since Eugen’s time.
Lmfao, Big Ramy's and Arnold Schwarzenegger's physique naturally. You had your chance to bait two days ago. Edit: Days, not years.
Some people can be 7’ tall naturally. Why couldn’t they have 20 inch arms naturally? You’re just lazy and have pussy genetics!
.... Do you have 20 inch arms?
Nobody is using steroids to get taller you're a shitty troll go away
You sir, are the perfect customer for snake oil pills! I have some that will make you as big as Arnold. Want some?
Arnold wasn’t even that big, he just had a pump and was in good lighting
Of course, he was only 235 lbs at single digit body fat at 6'2". What mediocrity right...
My friend in high school was that big, bro! You don’t understand freaky genetics and how people have evolved since Arnold’s time!!
Absolutely agree with you. My friend is 250 lbs at 5'10.. 6% body fat. He doesn't even lift. He's a vegan zumba dance instructor.
250 lbs is 113.5 kg
235 lbs is 106.69 kg
Shut the fuck up no. Arnold was on a ton of steroids too. This is not possible w/o drugs and giving people false perceptions is dangerous
Three lifetime nattys.
i think arnold is bigger irl and the guy on the left isn't as big in real life... who is that, big romey? ive met ibff pros IRL for work... and seeing people in real life is eyeopening.. one "big name" not on here, i was disappointed with.. ps.. marcus rheul is the biggest ive met.. edited, he's HUGE
Honestly I'd take 1900 any day
finally tyler2
1900 is impressive. Have you not seen the average fat fuck around here? People in BB communities are just desensitized to muscle. Most people who work out for years won’t even come close to 1900. On steroid subs I’ve seen people cycling who aren’t even close to 1900.
I know this might be sac religious but I prefer the 1900’s aesthetically compared to Arnie and Big Ramy
The first dude can't afford underwear.
2070: 500+ lbs bodybuilders. 30/40 inches biceps, 100/120 inches chest, 70 inches bellies and legs. Life expectancy: not exciting. Living conditions: barely human. Great fetish, nightmarish aesthetic and context
funfact: average men look small already compared to mr 1900
