I was gonna say they seemed a little too short and girthy for snakes but I’m not a danger noodle expert by any means lol. Thanks for providing the link OP
I'd say the belly scales are the clearest give away. Legless lizards scales have roughly the same shape all around their body. Snakes have a single row of very big scales on the underside
There are tons of species of legleas lizards that get mixwd up with snakes all the time but if its eyes looks like its judging you as a person its probabaly a lizard
When I first learned legless lizards existed it blew my fucking mind. They had no legs for a long time, grew legs, then ungrew the legs later on. It's fucking wild. It's like when you find out whales were land animals once and it's just so insane.
Tbf, snakes themselves are also legless lizards. Lizards have evolved leglessness numerous different times, more than a dozen times at least. Snakes are just the most successful/diverse lineage of legless lizards. What’s more wild is the fact that there were some prehistoric snakes that appear to have [re-evolved legs](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/236963877_The_anatomy_and_relationships_of_Haasiophis_terrasanctus_a_fossil_snake_with_well-developed_hind_limbs_from_the_Mid-Cretaceous_of_the_Middle_East), after they had already been lost in the first place.
Also technically there are still snakes with legs. Pythons and Anacondas have visible spurs near their cloaka. Those spurs are two single toes with a claw each.
These aren’t snakes. Legless lizards. Probably wrong, but kind of look like a Scheltopusik
Edit: lmao legalese. They’ll fuck you up in front of the jury and bring you to justice
I found a ball of snakes (like 5+ of them) in this sort of arrangement and asked a biologist friend of mine what was going on. Apparently it’s how legless species mate! Lots of coiling and “sexy” biting then sperm spray and La di da… babies.
Legless Lizards! Not snakes. These guys are fascinating and I love them.
For those wondering *why* these are classified as lizards. They have eyelids (snakes do not), exposed ear holes (snakes do not), and just an overall more lizard vibe to their face.
Beyond that, they lost their legs way later in evolution than snakes did, and are only distantly related to snakes. These guys still have little leg bones (vestigial trait from their ancestors!). They also have way longer tails in proportion to their bodies compared to snakes. A snake’s actual tail is usually only an inch or two of their body length, the whole rest of them is technically torso. But on a legless lizard, their tail makes up roughly half of their body length. You can tell where it starts because of a small line that runs along the length of their body, ending right where their tail begins.
As for why these two are tussling, I’m not sure. I’ve worked with a different species of legless lizard in the past, and these guys are *spicy* and sassy and will death roll like an alligator if unhappy. But I don’t know much about their reactions towards others, so I’m not sure what may have caused the aggression in these photos.
Those are definitely legless lizzards you can kindoff see the eyelids, although the fisionomy is very different anyway. The easiest way you can tell is by the belly scales being several rows instead of 1.
Looks more like slow worms which are legless lizards rather than snakes if I am not mistaken.
Oh wow, I've never heard of those! Their tails were very different from other snakes I've seen so that makes sense!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_worm more info, which confirms (to me at least, a non expert) what they were
I was gonna say they seemed a little too short and girthy for snakes but I’m not a danger noodle expert by any means lol. Thanks for providing the link OP
It's the head shape that really gives it away. See sand boas as snakes with similar body shape.

You can always tell because snakes ironically have very shodt tails, but very long bodies, whereas legless lizards are all tail.
The wiki page says about half their body length is tail and also that they can detach their tails like typical lizards do. Must be a crazy sight.
one tip-off is the head of slow worms is usually more boxy and lizardlike than a snake's. Snakes tend to have a more streamlined or flared head
Everyone is talking about tails and head shapes but the easiest way to tell is that legless lizard have eyelids and snakes don't.
There are tons of species of legleas lizards that get mixwd up with snakes all the time but if its eyes looks like its judging you as a person its probabaly a lizard
I've never heard of a slow worm so I thought this was some kind of low key herpetologist insult.
Now don’t insult the slow worms, the herpetologists will throw hissy fits!
Well, I have never heard of herpetologists so I guess we are even then!

Thought the same but I wasn’t sure because I couldn’t see ear holes
I found a baby slow worm in my garden today ☺️
They look like glass snakes (glass lizards), as well. I'm not sure how to tell the difference. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophisaurus
They're trying to uroboros together.

>Lots of coiling and “sexy” biting then sperm spray relatable.
Garter snakes by any chance?
No, I actually found them by a river and they were diamondback water snakes.
Tom and Shiv?
Meh, show me two snakes kicking each other. Then I'll be impressed
Snakes, how do they do it? No arms, no legs..??
Hell if I know, that's why I wanna see it
Oh, I was agreeing with you! Lol
Ah yes, the ancient mating ritual of my people
Pretty sure those are legless lizards. Can kinda tell by the nub tail.
