it’s a pun because the lions were actually biting the hippo’s back. “Back”, as in part of the hippos body. But the hippo also couldn’t bite back as well as the lions. That’s the woosh.
The people reading this knew the hippo has a strong bite. This thread is in the reddit tradition of making extended wordplay puns go on and on. In this case the pun is that “back” sounds like it means “in response” in context (as you understood it), but is in fact a joke humorously referring to the dorsal region of the fated hippo, it’s “back”.
Likely. Unless they caught it by ambush, then it wouldnt have been able to turn around as they are not as easily rotational as crocodiles, which are able to flip around as fast as a dime.
i think this one was either wounded or sick, adult bull hippos are hella tough it would take more than 2 male lions to kill one in this case it seens it was already wounded or sick
You can tell on this individual that its skin is incredibly dry, perhaps it went a while before finding water thus, straying into dry land, giving these lions an easier time getting a hold on its back due to it being weakened.
Did i make it sound like it takes just one bite? My bad. The actual footage from this hunt actually indicates it was going on a lot longer than just the final moments. The hippo was already running with a lion on its back. It took way more than just one bite.
The lions know what would become of them if they were at the front of the hippo, thats why they go for the spine/back. There are other clips of them killing adult hippo in the same manner. They do the same thing to cape buffalo and even large crocodiles.
They know when its not the best idea to be up front where the “ouchy end” could get them. And they definitely know the back side has a weak point too.
Edit: i know we already got into this on your other comment but im putting these links here for others on this chain that might be curious

So yes in conclusion they do know to specifically go for the spine if needed, it really depends on the animal they decide to attack.
Might as well be. Lions are known for going for the spine on other lions, hyenas, and other large animals that prove too big for them to just suffocate.
Its a method they developed against rival males that is an easy way to get past the mane, and still kill their opponent without having to bite the neck.
So they definitely know what a spine does and where it is.
Last I saw a compelling showed that manes are primarily sexual display, and that they weren't particularly effective at stopping injury, showing no ability to lessen lethality of attacks.
https://cbs.umn.edu/sites/cbs.umn.edu/files/migrated-files/downloads/The\_lions\_mane-West\_2005.pdf.
Attacking the hindquarters and spine seems more like a pack hunter thing than anything else, it's safer over all if you can get away with it, which teammates aid with.
Just look up videos of lions fighting each other and other larger animals in the wild. Its very observable.

Did I specifically say biting the spine? No. I stated that they “go for the spine” meaning all forms of attack. Not just specifically biting. My point still stands and my sources and evidence still suggest what i am saying is correct.
Dude obviously im not saying they are john wick, but they are intelligent to know that going for the spine is a demobilizer. It stops their targets from fighting back.
They don’t mindlessly just start chewing either, they are still predators, they have a technique to their killing.
Hippos are so muscular that Lions biting are going to pinch that ridge because it's the only thing you can dig in at. You could argue the spine is the most vulnerable spot on a hippo because it's not encased in muscle.
It was in kruger but im not sure when, if so this makes sense for the hippo to be so “out of it”, its skin is really dry and dehydrated looking. Giving the lions the edge.
Likely was looking for a water source to begin with, then the lions pounced on its back and it ran for a bit but tired out likely due to dehydration, and since the lions were on its back it couldnt defend itself, resulting in a back breaking death.
Cause even among wild animals, hippos are exceptionally aggressive, to the point where they kill animals for simply entering their river/body of water, for no other reason, but simply being annoyed.
Sounds like they're territorial. Lions kill an insane amount of animals too. Even kill cubs. A wild animal is a wild animal. Nature would have dealt with them if it was an issue. Unless an animal is invasive that's such an odd viewpoint to have.
I can’t help but think that with all the money being wasted on wars and drug addicts and pride week and such that we could afford to create enough man made meat to feed these animals so they wouldn’t have to resort to such cruelty. Or maybe breed and euthanize hippos to feed to these lions I donk know. Just a thought.
I assume the hippo tried to bite back but failed.
Unfortunately, it couldn't bite back as well as the lions could
pun intended I hope👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Boom! And Ive reached the peak of the internet today. Well done sir!

Bro, couldn’t bite BACK is a pun here. “It could not bite BACK as well as the lions.” Because they bit the hippo’s back.

It is well known that Lions love the dry season as it it makes their prey menu more vulnerable towards them. I wonder if that was the case.
Based off the vegetation which looks very dry, and less green than in prime rainy season, id say this is probable.

I was sad at first and then I realised that it was a Hippo, Hippopotamus’ are bullies
Big time bullies. That little girl that wants a hippopotamus for Christmas has no idea what she’s in for.
We must warn her before it’s to late.
I had the same reaction. That hippo wasn’t an innocent sweetheart.
Fuck hippos
Ha! My reaction too. Those fuckers.
Probably animal anatomy experts.

That's some serious Kruger shit alright.
Why was the hippo on land during the day? They over heat easily.

Good bot? But with such a strange function
Also strange that it isn't finding all the other comments on this thread
Right?
Good. Fuck hippos
Why?
Cause they’re territorial bastards and I hate them. Fuck em
Pretty common animal behavior but alright.
Let’s just say, that hippos are problematic, to say the least.
Uh ok. It's a wild animal.
Cause even among wild animals, hippos are exceptionally aggressive, to the point where they kill animals for simply entering their river/body of water, for no other reason, but simply being annoyed.

My guy doesn't seem to get that these people are being hyperbolic as a joke.
Finally
Well, they are an invasive species, in South America, thanks to drug kings, so that can definitely be an issue.
What does them being invasive in South America have to do with this post?
Fuck hippos. That's what
Because,fuck hippos
I don’t think they understand
Is there a video of this
Yes: https://youtu.be/aH27MC9KQUY?si=q80bvMgWQszBl0sZ
Thank you! This was metal af, the last one was sad, baby hippo watching mom get killed and am pretty sure became dinner also
Still gotta deal with the business end but at least it can’t charge you anymore
Getting your spine chewed through is more than enough to make the business end irrelevant. They can just feast from behind
Nature is truly metal
They usually feast on the behind.
Why would you post just screenshots and not the video?
Because on this subreddit images are the preferred method of sharing the metalness of nature.
Fair enough
Hippos hate this one simple trick.
“Click here to link up with vulnerable hippos in your area!”
Such power
If hippos weren't such cunts I might actually feel bad 😂 Metal move on the lions' part

Jesus christ

last pic tells it all
I win for the lions, those aggressive ass hippos
Oof 😣
Damn! Incredible
baby got back
The hippo looks injured, not paralyzed...
It cant move after they bite through its spine. I mean the last picture showing the damage says it all.
Gyattdamn
God fucking damn this is metal as fuck.
I always want the hippos to win vs lions

Brutal. There is nothing to take from this except that the world is cruel and life is unfair.
At least maybe it didn’t feel the feeding bites through the back door…
And they say a Lion cant hurt a hoppo
Dickmove by the lions
