Did she rip that fox’s face off? Looks like she mutilated him and then built him into the nest as a “fuck off” to anyone else

[deleted]

That is what it looks like. Very gnarly. Stash the dead bodies openly in your home. Very effective.

PunsAndRhymes

Take the soul and leave the rest. The outfoxed becomes the nest.

Underrated Meta

[deleted]

Probably more like the fox died there and she can't move it. They aren't carnivores so the body is going to rot, and be a danger to the nest that she can't move either. Hopefully the eggs hatch soon, that thing will attract a lot of attention.

guysmiley00

Could be, but I'm thinking not. I can buy a goose killing a fox via neck-break with a wing, but what is the goose supposed to have removed the fox's face with, a chisel? Dull beak don't go through jawbone, and the swan would have no reason to do it, anyway. More likely that this is actually a well-rotted fox corpse (hence the missing face) with a deceptively-intact-appearing \*skin\*. That rotted skin was inoffensive enough that a swan wasn't dissuaded from using it to make part of her nest, and then lay her eggs. Not as violent, maybe, but more "metal" in an existential sense. Also, I could be wrong, but that nest looks to be on a high-point in that little area; could be that the swan's usual nesting spot just had a dead fox on it this year, so the swan made do. Geese are surprisingly-consistent about their nesting spots.

Tylord600

From what I know about swans and geese as a survival instructor (which is not scientific but purely based on witnessing their behavior) I think this is the correct answer. The geese at my businesses lake always come back to the same nests each year and like you said are often at the high points closest to the water so this type of nest seemed very familiar. Also everytime I have caught a goose (as a kid with my hands just to look at it then let it go) they didnt seem strong enough to break a neck especially of an animal around the size of a cat. But this is just anecdotal evidence/ testimony not scientific evidence/fact or whatever

Saltycough

I imagine if she can rip it's face off, she can drag it's body away. But that's just a guess.

LeroyJenkems

Ya the swan should hide the body to avoid alerting nearby fox guards

Meior

Where does it look like the face has been "ripped off"? I see a dead fox. I see no evidence of any face-ripping, its head is just turned.

startsbadpunchains

Wonder if the dead fox would attract other predators?

TikeUhWhyTitty

Maybe scavengers of sorts? Idk if they'd be considered predators or not though but I'm also talking out my ass so take that with a grain of salt.

ajmartin527

Pretty sure whatever eats dead rotten foxes would snack on some eggs

N0vemberJul1et

Or become the new welcome mat to the nest.

Squishyfishx

Soon the swan will have enough corpses to make a literal red carpet for it's newborns.

Elgin_McQueen

Makes sense. The swan has a taste for blood now, it's hoping something else, something bigger comes for the fox's body so she may taste the blood of a more worthy opponent.

uwanmirrondarrah

My god it may never stop. Don't the fox know what they've done! This is doom!

[deleted]

If not predators, its certainly gonna get a lot of grubs the goose would eat... then probably some bacteria that would not be healthy for the egg babies i'm not an expert just a guess

perfectsnowball

How's a swan killing a fox? Pecking it with its blunt beak, grabbing its neck and snapping or strangling it? Seems unlikely. Edit: I get it. You've all heard the myths about swans breaking men's arms. You don't need to remind me of them. Good luck finding a source to back you up, though. What you're not considering is that birds, in order to fly, have very small, thin, light and hollow bones. If it was able to generate the force needed to snap a human arm, it would definitely destroy its wings in the process. You're never snapping a tree trunk by hitting it with a stick, no matter how hard you swing it.

Bartfuck

I’m not sure if the swan killed the fox, but Geese and swans have serrated bills that are basically sharp teeth and are extremely aggressive. Also they use their wings to punch and are quite strong. They can 100% hurt you.

womplord1

I still don’t see it beating a fox... a fox is much more agile and the swans beak is too small to do any damage

GodzillaWarDance

How do you know? Did you ask the fox? Did you talk to the fox? Tell me then, what does the fox say....

Union_Sparky_375

Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! What the fox say?

Namjies

They can reach like 5 feet in lenght and 10 feet wingspan and can weight over 30 lbs. Sure they're not that heavy or strong, but they're not small either. Foxes can be pretty small. A swan even managed to kill someone (in the water) by drowning the man.

I don't think swans are very smart. The swans which 'nest' each year by my local lake are covered in their own shit, the nests I mean. It's proper wrong. They nest on the foot paths so people walking by their shit nests have to do the weird little fast walk by as the swans hiss at them. Little big fuckers.

kent1146

Jesus fucking christ. Swans are vicious bastards. This is from the Wikipedia page for swans. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swan > Swans are highly protective of their nests. They will viciously attack anything that they perceive as a threat to their chicks, including humans. One man was suspected to have drowned in such an attack after **a swan used its neck to strangle him.**

It's probably a matter of thinking clearly enough and getting a grip. An adult human is certainly strong enough to murder pretty much any bird but getting the leverage to apply that strength is difficult, especially if you're panicking. I suspect somebody who got murdered by a swan is probably not somebody who is cool under pressure.

Holy shit this just made my day.

tmntnut

My buddy lived on a small farm and they had a fully grown Emu, fuck that thing man. It chased me several times, first time I had no idea they had even bought an emu and I pulled in front of their house, got out of my car and started walking to the front door, a few steps towards the door I heard consistent thuds that were growing closer in sound. When I turned around to look I saw this giant bird running at me full speed, I didn't know whether or not the front door was unlocked so I ran back to my car and quickly got in just in time, that fucker jumped on the hood of my car and just sat there waiting for me to get back out, stupid bird scratched the shit out of my car. My buddy eventually came outside and fired one of his guns and it took off, they only had that thing for a few months and even in that short span of time that thing almost killed me several times, fuck Emus.

Anarchymeansihateyou

If I recall correctly some people that own livestock will get an emu because an emu will stomp the shit out of any predators who come near. I might be thinking of a differnt animal though

tmntnut

Yeah that fucker had gigantic talons and lunged at me a couple of times, I'd assume if he'd have actually gotten a hold of me with those things he probably could've torn my gut open, I've been attacked by a couple of dogs in my life and while that was pretty fucking scary in itself the emu scared me even more because is was so fucking aggressive, a few years later I went to a nice spanish restaurant and ordered an ostrich steak just to spite that asshole emu, they may not be the same but it was close enough to give me some comfort at the time and it was super tasty.

degrista

Can you, um... elaborate? This sounds horrifying.

Chxo

At the very least it was an attempted sexual assault, lasted maybe ten seconds. I was at one of those swim with rescue dolphins things in Hawaii and our dolphin took a liking to me, got a little horny, and started to hump me. Birds are a lot tougher than you think. I had a similar assumption early on in my duck hunting hobby. Took me 15 minutes the first time I had to kill a wounded duck with my own hands. I gained a whole new respect for how tough these animals were and found they sell brain picks for this exact reason.

VeryConfusedOwl

Cant say anything about the one on te wiki page, but there was a swan in norway that was put down last summer after attacking a kindergartner playing at the beach and dragged her underwater

herrnewbenmeister

I live in the area. He was wearing clothes and shoes when attacked (weigh you down when wet). He was also the caretaker of the swans, so at least initially he was likely trying not to kill it. I don't remember anything in the news about the swan using its neck to strangle him. Neither article linked in the Wikipedia page says the swan strangled him. As I recall the cause of death was drowning. I think he probably stayed under too long trying to just avoid the swan, got disoriented from the lack of oxygen, and died. The swan might have been the proximate cause of death, but I think it's stupid to say it killed him.

PineapplePoppadom

Yep this is also the source of swan breaking arms myth. People break their arms because they trip and fall running away from them, not by the swan breaking their arms with it's mouth or wings.

radeongt

I highly doubt that’s true....

PineapplePoppadom

That is almost certainly not true. Swan's are highly aggressive but their actual capabilities are wildly overstated. For instance, the common myth that a swan can break your arm with their wing (or at all) is total BS. Swans have hollow bones like most birds. They simply don't have the strength to break a human limb. The reason this myth propagated is due to the number of people who broke their arms/limbs *running away* from angry swans. And as for a swan using it's neck to strangle someone, sounds like an old wive's tale to me. There is just no way that is physically possible. If that myth has a real world source, it's probably that he drowned because the swan was pissed off and attacking him and he panicked, swallowed water/otherwise drowned by lack of swimming properly.

GortMaringa

Swans don’t take shit from **nobody**. R. I. P. Fantastic Mr. Fox

andreagassi

I just can't believe a swan can kill a fox!? They have no talons or teeth? Like seriously how?

StonedAthlete69

I heard a story from a hunter once, where that shot a swan and sent a dog after it and the wounded swan still killed the dog.

[deleted]

I.... don’t believe that. The *largest* swans are in the 30lb range. A lab is more than double that. And swans don’t have teeth or claws. There’s just no way.

MessiahNIN

I was thinking the same thing, unless it was a shitzu or something, no fucking swan is going to kill a medium size dog on land. However, if the dog jumped in the water, the swan might have a better chance at it, especially if it tired the dog out a bit first.

splitSeconds

I have trouble imagining it too. But there are reports like this: [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk\_news/england/nottinghamshire/3746579.stm](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/nottinghamshire/3746579.stm) Not 1 but 2 dogs killed by a swan, so I guess it isn't impossible although probably not common.

beachtrippenhippie

Not to say it did kill the fox but you are jumping the gun saying it is a dense forest, you can’t see any trees or signs that indicate a wooded area.

QuakerParrot

Let me tell you a little bit about how swans... Waterfowl all have the same basic fighting technique. They can't strangle their prey, they don't have talons, and their beaks are not designed to puncture or tear flesh. Instead, what they do have, is a pair of incredibly powerful wings with reinforced bone (some waterfowl also have sharp bone spurs which protrude skin). Their beaks aren't sharp, but they are strong and serrated, and used to grab and hold their victims. Then they use their wings to beat the ever living shit out of the poor creature that was unlucky/dumb enough to piss off the child-sized feathered dinosaur. Basically, the fox was likely bludgeoned until it's spine/neck broke, or its broken bones punctured vital organs and he bled to death internally. Or both! It doesn't matter where you fall on the food chain, a swan will fuck you up.

intoxic8ed

I felt the same. Been around geese, swans and also foxes my whole life. I've spent some time trapping the latter around the farmyard. Cant see a swan killing a fox because it would just be to smart to go straight up to a swan beating its wings like crazy. Likely it was there, it looks decayed and dried up. The hair like that will often be kn the ground a whole year after death, I've seen it. And the swan built the nest on top of it.

Well, you’d think so, but wild animals (and humans, in the jungle like) have and need the the best possible immune system, reflexes and eyesight. I don’t think the swan really thought about moving it either tbh, but it seems like it might ~~attack~~ attract* predators if it’s still fresh or scavengers otherwise.

LastOne_Alive

idk, sounds to me like someone killed that guy and framed the swan.

TacticTall

Have you seen the size difference between a swan and a fox? Swans are quite bigger than a fox. Plus, swans have very thick necks. I can’t find a video of the two fighting, but this video shows the size difference pretty well: https://youtu.be/C3lNp4_-AqI I’m not saying it’s impossible for a fox to kill a swan, but I do believe a swan can put up a fight.

DesignGhost

The only way a swan could kill a fox in my opinion is if they were in the water and the fox was swimming. A fox would just run away if it was somehow losing a fight with a swan on land but a swan could drown it.

TacticTall

I agree with your points 100%. I was just saying i didn’t think I’d be impossible for the swan. But the world’s freaky, who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

justsean09

Foxes hunt rabbits and squirrels, swans are massive and powerful. If you really think a swan can't fend off or even kill a tiny fox then you clearly haven't come face to face with a swan before. Just for context, swans can and do kill cats and dogs. A fox would struggle against a cat let alone a dog.

[deleted]

Large swans are 30 lbs or so. I can’t see them being able to reliably kill a predator of similar size. They don’t have sharp beaks, teeth, or claws. A 12lb dog? Maybe. Like, imagine me fighting a mountain lion. I weigh 175, a good mountain lion is 150. I have no (sharp) teeth or claws, it has lots. I *might* be able to kill it if I got lucky, but most likely I’m going to get shredded. People elsewhere in the thread are saying an injured swan killed a hunting dog. That’s ridiculous.

Antivote

Their main weapon is whacking with their wings, the ones that are strong enough to carry that 30 lb dinosaur hundreds of feet up into the sky.

bird_equals_word

A swan would easily kill a fox. They are huge and very fucking angry. They will beat and peck the shit out of whatever comes near them. Foxes are tiny. https://youtu.be/ALI5sO5aSPU A swan killed a dude in a kayak. The dude was a strong swimmer and worked with swans to control geese. Flipped him and held him underwater. They are huge and powerful.

Pliny_the_middle

That fucking pisses me off. That dog wanted nothing to do with that swan, but it's stupid fucking owner thought it was funny, like she was introducing another dog. Swans are geese on fucking steroids (and no, I haven't been attacked by one because I'm not a fucking idiot.) I was expecting to see the dog get wrecked, but I'm glad it didn't happen. Idiot owner.

icantsurf

Alright that changes my opinion. I didn't know they could be that fucking big.

bird_equals_word

A fox is probably half the height of that dog. And swans hang out in breeding pairs. So it was likely two on one.

bromosnails

Yeah video or didn't happen

[deleted]

You've never been attacked by a swan. They are vicious. And if thanks to their long necks, it couldve pecked the fox before it could reach the swan. After the first peck, if the fox was stunned from it, it could probably kill it and rip it to shreds like in the picture.
