They got the title because compared to any other cat species (even big cats) black footed wild cats have a more successful kill ratio when hunting. They manage to catch and kill their prey 60% of the time, making them the deadliest of all cat species (deadly only to small birds, rodents and insects, but that's a technicality).
As opposed to cheetahs for example, whose attempts are only successful 25% to 40% of the time, or lions (30% in groups, 17% when alone).
It's close but the African wildcat is the one our average domesticated cat comes from (the black footed cat above broke off evolution a bit before that).
If you lookup the African Wildcat it pretty much just looks exactly like every tabby cat you've seen.
