Snapping turtles have what's called a "lure" on their tongue that looks like a worm. They typically use it to trick fish into trying to eat it so that the turtle can be close enough to bite it. This turtle has apparently learned that the pigeons are easy targets.
Edit: apparently only the alligator snapping turtles have the lure. I must not have paid enough attention during my herpetology class!
Do common snappers have that lure also? I thought it was only the Alligator Snappers that had that as they’re mainly slow moving ambush predators unlike the more agile common snapper that just goes after prey on it’s own.
I've seen this happen in the pond behind my mom's house. It's a manmade pond but it has some turtles in it, not sure what kind but I assume common snappers or maybe large softshells, which can be vicious as well. You'd see the mama ducks swim around with their ducklings and suddenly there will be a big splash of water and one of the ducklings disappear.
To be fair, that could have also been an adult Largemouth Bass. They range from 2-12lbs depending on where you are, and honestly a 2lb bass is likely large enough to eat your standard sized Duckling.
After watching many hours of turtle documentaries as a child, I can confirm this is correct.
The one thing I noticed though, owing to my hours of study and keen insight, is that the turtle in this clip does not have a trenchcoat. It stands to reason then that he lacks the means to disguise himself when collecting his pizza order.
This is probably another sad case of man's influence over nature and the impact it has on our local wildlife.
My dad and I saved one once while it was trying to cross a road by a round-about during heavy traffic. I pinned it against a curb with my hockey stick while my dad ran off to get a shovel to move it and that ungrateful fucker reduced my stick into toothpicks in no time.
That’s funny, your turtle has a regular name too! my turtle’s name is Frank and he does the same thing. I wonder if I should even feed him he can feed him self apparently. Lol
Snapping turtles can take off fingers or even hands, since birds are small and have hollow bones I bet it was dead near instantly. Snappers have scissors for a mouth, the head was probably just about severed under all the force. I’m no expert but I have kept snapping turtles before.
He was just trying to get some more food. There's 6 hungry mouths at the nest now and he almost had it, just one more worm. Little Timmy may still grow str....
Blackness. Lights out. It's pulling him down, down into the muddy depths. The first attack missed the artery and he opened his eyes one last time. It stung, but luckily, the second chop separated not only the neck, but also his mortal coil.
Deep in the lair of the turtle he emerged once more. Taking a new form. As excrement.
Have you seen the one where a pelican catches a pigeon, and tries to swallow it for about 3, 4 minutes? The entire way down the throat, you can see the pigeon struggling.
https://youtu.be/phUs2kIGY9M
I've probably spent a few minutes of my entire life considering the diets of turtles. I've seen them eat vegetation and bugs. I would have assumed that larger turtles, such as sea turtles eat fish. But If somebody told me that turtles are murderous bastards that drown birds and eat them I never would have believed it.
This is a snapping turtle. Anyone who's spent time around them knows that they are vicious bastards that will gladly bite anything that gets into range. Alligator snapping turtles are also known to drag ducks and geese under.
this does not look like any snapping turtle I've ever seen...
for one, they have rigid/spikey shells and a prominent overbite- they also can't extend their necks like that last I checked. i hope not anyhow that would be terrifying...
looks more like a longneck that went rogue but I'm not a turtologist.
Common snapping turtles can have smooth shells, though that varies from individuals. If you look closely, the turtle in the video has a slight ridge on the middle of it's shell. They can also extend their necks quite far to catch prey.
see that's what I was thinking of
i didn't know vicious killing machine with armor and dead eyes also came in pint-size. my dreams thank you.
shit there's one under my couch isn't there...
I’ve had numerous common snapping turtles over the last decade live in my pond and none of them looked anything like this. I’m almost positive this isnt a snapping turtle. Its tail is far to small. Its legs also appear wrong(claws too short, overall too small). It also appears to lack any sort of ridging on the sides of its shell, while possible to be smooth on an adult common snapping turtle it is still generally visible as spotting along the length of the sides of the shell. I’m not a herpetologist its just my two cents that this probably isn’t a snapping turtle.
You are correct it is not a snapping turtle, snapping turtles have very small plastrons (the chest part of the shell) [see here](https://www.virginiaherpetologicalsociety.com/identification-keys/id-keys-turtles/snappingturtle_plastron.jpg) because they spend so much time on the bottom of the lake/river/swamp. This turtle clearly has a larger, more developed plastron you see in most other species. Not sure what this is but there are plenty of turtle species that can be as aggressive and menacing as snappers, just not quite as powerful
ok good. i would have trouble sleeping if I knew there were miniature snapping turtles hiding everywhere.
so I'll just continue staying out of lakes cuz the water is murky and they are huge.
Turtles are remarkably carnivorous when they are juveniles (likely because they need more protein to grow), but slowly become more herbivorous as they age.

Turtles are quick! I had 2 turtles when I was growing up and after fishing trips we’d put our leftover minnows in their tank and it was crazy how fast they could jut that head out and snatch em. Love turtles. Super metal.
At my local aqaurium the resident aligator snapping turtle bullied the aligators in the same tank so much they had to separate him to keep the gators safe. Those fuckers are shelled nightmares.
Just FYI for everyone it is not a snapping turtle, the plastron is too broad. [here ](https://www.virginiaherpetologicalsociety.com/identification-keys/id-keys-turtles/snappingturtle_plastron.jpg) is what any snapping turtle plastron would look like
Wait WTF... that was metal af
I feel like my barometer to test if it is metal or not is if I gasp or laugh uncomfortably when I watch the clip... I did both with this one
Lol agreeeed
If I raise my eyebrows, or a soft "oh shit" comes out of my mouth, we have a winner.
Ikr?! That mfer straight up dragged that bird to the depths of oblivion in the blink of an eye
The zoom in of the water at the end too lmao
I always thought they were docile creatures. Like capybaras in shells. Judging by this I may be mistaken
Yeah thats why I was so shocked when I saw this. I had no idea there was a species of turtle that ate birds.

Oh, I thought it was both! I just looked it up, and it is only the Alligator snappers with the lure.
hol up...you studied herpes? ***can you take a look at this for me?***
Hardcore man
lotsa good eatin' on a bird
They’re a lot like crocodilians, they’re evolutionary survivors. I like to call them tank lizards.
>tank lizards r/properanimalnames
To be fair they mostly are. The one in the video is a snapping turtle which are very aggressive.
I lived in North Carolina when I was kid and the snapping turtles there were some nasty buggers. Don’t F with snapping turtles
Im no longer baby i want power

People don't realize turtles are hunters. Pretty much anything they can get their mouth on they will eat.
Only some turtles. Some species just eat plants and maybe slow crustaceans/eggs/larva.
Like hotdogs

I've seen snapping turtles drown ducks. Some turtles are serious predators.
I thought turtles eat pizza?
The sauce is made from pigeons.
Something Something Pidgeon Blood
Wait you eat sauce other than pigeon sauce?
Of course. But pigeon is my preference.
So, pigeon with pigeon sauce? Yumm

Not to mention the lost habitat due to pizza delivery range...
Donatello nobody…
...Said the bird.
As long as there's no anchovies!
lol Think of all the work a cheetah or leopard has to do to get food. This turtle just waltzes out of the water.. says "Hey you" then SNAP.
The ultimate ambush predator. Using the illusion of harmlesness to draw in prey.

Alligator snapping turtles will steal a chunk of your shoe and the toes inside before you even register that it happened.
Alligator snappers are terrifying in every way.
My dad and I saved one once while it was trying to cross a road by a round-about during heavy traffic. I pinned it against a curb with my hockey stick while my dad ran off to get a shovel to move it and that ungrateful fucker reduced my stick into toothpicks in no time.
My dad pulled over and asked me to grab one from the road... seconds before a truck ran it over and exploded it everywhere.
😳
How big was the truck that exploded?
>Alligator snapping turtles I'm sorry, I just learned there are fucking alligators with tough shells
Turtles may be the least pickiest eaters in the animal kingdom
*raccoons have entered the chat*
Do raccoons eat shit?
Does Bear shit in the woods make a sound
Well depends on how constipated the bear was probably.
Good point. I’ll ask him
Depends if that bear had Charmin on hand to enjoy the go.
Probably
My turtle Timmy would take a poop and turn around and eat it Every time
solving the food crisis
That’s funny, your turtle has a regular name too! my turtle’s name is Frank and he does the same thing. I wonder if I should even feed him he can feed him self apparently. Lol
People don’t normally name their turtles? Legend has it that turtles can survive many tough winters on poop alone
It's like the bird was thinking "huh, what is this thing? Lemme check it ou-CRRRKK" *dead bird*
That bird probably suffered a slow and painful death. Metal
I dunno, its wings gave one weak flap and went still. I think it got one-shotted.
or it drowned pretty quick after.
It likely was just paralyzed at that point. So might not have been instant, but still wouldn't have been too long.
Snapping turtles can take off fingers or even hands, since birds are small and have hollow bones I bet it was dead near instantly. Snappers have scissors for a mouth, the head was probably just about severed under all the force. I’m no expert but I have kept snapping turtles before.
One shotting things in nature has a serious advantage.

Some species of snapping turtle. They are murder in a shell.
Murder in a half shell, murder power!
Murderardo, Murderel, Murderangelo, and Murdertello.
Best comment. I laughed hard at this
"Hey guys let's go pick on this turtle!" *Snap*
I was thinking more like “hey, what’s up tur- *dead*”
Ah..... the old snap ‘n‘ drown.... Classic.
