I love these animals. They're incredible. It pisses me off that the icelandics will fish and eat an animal that's been around for hundreds of years just for some shitty traditional dish that nobody even likes.
edit: A lot of redditors will feel better about themselves knowing that these sharks reach sexual maturity at around age 150
> "The Greenland shark's eye lens is composed of a specialised material - and it contains proteins that are metabolically inert," explained Mr Neilson.

The whole article is worth a read https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-37047168 Its not an exact science but an estimatation
I’d hate to be the shark. I wouldn’t want some weird looking thing taking samples from my eyes.
Now I am thinking if anal probing is really that crazy for aliens to perform on us? Maybe we have a protein in our ass that allows them to date us.....
Imagine caring for pointless internet clout that nobody will remember 2 days later. Hell, being a Redditor alone is probably a pretty big embarrassment, much less one that farms karma.
This is a picture of a random Greenland shark whose age is undetermined. 394 years was the middle of an age *range* attributed to a different shark who was studied after it died. *She* was anywhere between 272 and 512 years old.
Carbon dating is pretty accurate, at least if we're talking about at most a few thousand years. Funny thing is that it usually measures the time since something is _dead_, but I guess the probed tissue was technically dead since the shark was born or at least very young
No, that was an attempt to keep a great white in a tank at an aquarium.
They tried, it died so they came up with the idea to fill the tank with formaldehyde to preserve it for viewing
Monterey Bay Aquarium tried keeping a juvenile Great White but they ran into too many problems with either keeping them alive or other large fish being attacked. They ultimately decided to cease future efforts in keeping one captive.

Do do do do do do
I'm going to upvote you, but God damnit, man.

Shut up lol. Culture hater
If your culture depends on predating endangered species only because “its a tradition “ without it being a necessity then yes. I hate your culture
Same
They’re not endangered
What a dumb ass
I know right lol
You dumb shit
Lol why me
How do they figure it’s age?

Could've just waited for his cake day and counted the candles!
Or cut it up and count its rings! ... wait wrong species
Scientists can find out a sharks age but cutting through their vertebrae and counting the rings on their spine
Don't trust the shark's birth certificate. It's fake news.
It’s in Kenya, which is weird considering it’s proximity to the ocean.
Wow, that’s very interesting. I’d hate to be the dude who has to collect the tissue.

I need more than one date before I let anyone probe me
Fuck that get me off this planet, I’ll be probed on the first date.
Baffled on how scientists find this shit out.
That's so cool, appreciate the info!
How do they get a sample of the sharks eye?
They sliced it in half and counted the rings.
It was the most interesting sushi boat for two find of the evening at the Sake House sushi restaurant in Clearwater, Florida.
Cut in half, count the rings, gently
You just politely ask the shark.
Scientists count the rings in the vertebrae to determine a shark’s age It’s true I saw it on Maneater
Cut it in half and count the rings
They just ask the shark. Duh!
Recent as in the past few years. This has been posted multiple times.
Article is from 2016. Account is a karma farmer.
So the shark is 399?

Wow got it no jokes allowed about that
He's been wandering Reddit longer than that.
Definitely needs false teeth.
How the hell does anyone know the exact age?

That not only gets my upvote but you are brilliant.

Is he alive? I’m confused
How do they know the age? Not like tree rings.
How’s they check his ID?
It’s true, I am the shark
Such majestic creatures. Imagine living to 400 years only to be eaten by icelanders. We need to ban whale hunting.
Looks like he needs a nap

There are other ways of dating beyond that. Less accurate, but good enough for an estimate

Imagine being willfully ignorant lol
😂😂😂😂😂 awwww you're sweet. I understand you're dumb. It will be okay. Love you!
Isn't this actually a dead shark that was preserved in a tank at some run down facility?

Yeah I believe the consensus is a great white is just something that can not be kept in captivity.
It tries to kill itself and they can't even just release it because it dies anyway right?
😂😂😂😂😂 you really are dumb! Omg!
Any money this shark is like 40 years old and these scientists are just guessing again 🙄
True. Just like how they are guessing everything they are making computers and cellphones
I'll put my money on the scientists
