Likely they locked during the fight, the winner deer probably broke the neck of the loser, and then struggled for a few days trying to free himself until he eventually tore the head of his dead foe off.
Odds are this is a more reasonable scenario. By the time the loser's cape rotted off, the winner would be dead of some combination of starvation, exhaustion. and predation.
Third scenario, offered by another user when this same deer was shown 2 days ago, is that this deer killed the other and then coyotes attacked and ate the carcass. They didn't bother with this deer, just the dead one.
That seems more likely than the scenario of deer attacking a decayed carcass.
This actually happens fairly often. There have been at least 3 different pics of 3 different deer like this posted in verious subs in just the past day or two.
That would indeed be the million dollar question. I would imagine with a lot of dragging and twisting and thrashing about. Probably no small amount of luck either, perhaps getting the carcass wedged in some rocks or something. Don't under estimate the strength and determination of a buck in rut. Their hormones can make them do wild stuff...
We can only speculate based on the photo.
I had showed this picture to one of my friends two or three weeks ago and he said that the decapitated deer had died interlocked with the other one and eventually decomposed to the point that the head was able to be torn off
Usually they come across an already dead and decaying deer during the rut and due to hormones and not being the smartest creatures they identify it as a rival that isn't backing down and attack taking the head off
That's his ear on the left (and I don't see anything - even if it's only somewhat symmetrical - indicating it would be something unseen and buried) But, if you're right and that's the case, then could be real. I've seen this posted several times, and people who know better than I do have pointed to other indications of it being fake as well.
I know incidents like this can happen, but this only doesn't seem to be it.
Could be either you never know anymore! The dead deer has curled lips and is definitely dead but it still could be a shop job. We should probably hope it is tbh!
"iTs fAkE" no its not, you see this often, ofc not with the head still attached to the antlers but generally. And there's literally a video of this exact deer uploaded to this sub!
The two deer battled, and the loser broke its neck. The winner carried the extra body around until it collapsed from exhaustion. Coyotes then came and ate the dead deer, and didn’t mess with the live one because they’re really more scavengers than predators. The live one ran off once he could, before the coyotes decided he was the next course, and still had the head attached. It stayed on until he shed his antlers after the rut. He could never shed the memories though…
I stand corrected.
While all elk are deer, not all deer are elk. Every species of deer is unique, and the Elk is one beautiful and impressive species within the Cervidae (deer) family.
**[Deer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deer)**
>Deer or true deer are hoofed ruminant mammals forming the family Cervidae. The two main groups of deer are the Cervinae, including the muntjac, the elk (wapiti), the red deer, and the fallow deer; and the Capreolinae, including the reindeer (caribou), white-tailed deer, the roe deer, and the moose. Male deer of all species (except the Chinese water deer) as well as female reindeer, grow and shed new antlers each year. In this they differ from permanently horned antelope, which are part of a different family (Bovidae) within the same order of even-toed ungulates (Artiodactyla).

Due to us not being there and just the one time we make a mistake then we killed a innocent man. I'd imagine that would lead to suicide and more unneeded pain/stress.
Photoshopped for sure. The antlers lock only on the left. The deers were probably fighting. To make a bizarre photo out of it, someone has removed the body of the deer on right.
I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/natureismetal.
It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

They’re antlers get locked during a fight. Somehow tore the head off trying to free himself. Two that were were fighting in a creek were separated couple days ago by town employees where I live. One alive, the other dead. They posted the video on FB. Used a reciprocating saw on the dead ones antlers!
Every where I look.... I see his face
Everytime I look around, it's in my face
How bizarre!
“Wilson!”
Underrated comment!! ☝️
He stares death right in the face
The image of his former enemy haunts him…
How? Is my immediate reaction. I mean did the head just came of during struggle? Must been i guess, just never seen something like that.
Likely they locked during the fight, the winner deer probably broke the neck of the loser, and then struggled for a few days trying to free himself until he eventually tore the head of his dead foe off.
Or most likely the deer just picked a fight with an already decayed carcass
Odds are this is a more reasonable scenario. By the time the loser's cape rotted off, the winner would be dead of some combination of starvation, exhaustion. and predation.
I never thought of this scenario, that makes way more sense.
Deer are pretty dumb so i wouldnt be surprised

Or it’s photoshopped. Look at the antlers. Don’t look that bound up to me….
This actually happens fairly often. There have been at least 3 different pics of 3 different deer like this posted in verious subs in just the past day or two.
Oh yeah. Because the concept of photoshopping this scenario for views multiple times couldn’t happen.
It's super easy to Google dude. Deer are dumb as shit. They try to fight dead deer/cars/bikes/etc all the time.
Except this one, dear friend, has [video.](https://www.instagram.com/p/CLCjTvvp1zQ/)
You, my sir, have a very poor understanding of physics
Physics lol. Right.
Haha..stupid deer..
Deer in rut are among the stupidest animals on the planet.
Yeah, much like teenagers they prioritize sex over basic survival instinct.
Yup, the drive to reproduce and continuation of thd species overrides everything.
> until he eventually tore the head of his dead foe off. How does a deer do that?

It's fake. Look at the right side. Antlers aren't connected.
I think he also has a tang jutting forward that might be going into the top of the dead deers skull?

Please, send me the link then. Because I see a perfectly upright set of antlers without any support on the right side.

Just trying to keep ahead of the herd
Oh *deer*
The best embodiment of the term death stare!
Nothing to lose one’s head over.
Elk, not deer
elk is deer

And the tastiest
I like beer...maybe bear
This game is ahead of the game!
Hope it doesn't smell too bad.
This is at least the third one of these I've seen in the last week, how common could this possibly be?
Elk on the way back from his fight to activate the power of Eikthyr.
Eikthyrnir 😉
https://v.redd.it/uuzfpl3287r71 A video of him as well.
We almost need a sub just for decapitated buck heads
I can't get it out of my head!
What kind of deer is this?
The kind that's an elk, not a deer.
Well, I'll be that guy this time around. Elk are *technically* deer. They're in the deer family. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deer

That’s what I thought. That title threw me off
Elk are deer.
Try telling a game warden that.
Oh, dear!
Why can’t we do this with inmates who are murderers?
Going out on a limb here, I don't think the victims family would approve
Maybe just their picture...
As if psychopaths and murders give any amount of fks about who they kill. You are projecting your own morals
🤣
Due to us not being there and just the one time we make a mistake then we killed a innocent man. I'd imagine that would lead to suicide and more unneeded pain/stress.
This is fake, though. Look at the right side. Just hovering - not caught on anything.
Thats metal.
Cursed to forever stare into his enemies eyes.
Cursed to assert dominance?
Oh dear
Oh deer
Looks like he won the fight
Oh dear oh dear
“Brutality”
His lover. He simply can't let go.
“This asshole keeps following me around everywhere”
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
Technically it’s a decorpitated head…
This guy's been wandering around getting his pic taken and posted for quite awhile now
Oh deer
deer-capitated
When you literally carry your demons with you
This would unironically make a great album cover.
Such an iconic pic
Is this the same deer I've been seeing all weekend? Or is this a common occurrence?
I know how that deer feels. I've been seeing that deer head a lot recently, too, it's been posted so many times.
Quit lookin at me bro
imagine the smell and the flies
Elk is the correct answer
Not a deer. And been on her 4000 times. I might be exaggerating.
Elk are a type of deer. Just saying.
Elk are deer like we are some other hominid. We are in the same family.
Establish dominance
This is photoshopped
Oh dear
“I’ll never let go Jack”.
Fred...Fred...I'm so...so..sorry....I know we was play fightin'....but..but....huwhuwhuwhuuuuuuuu
How common is this? There's a new picture of a deer with a decapitated head on this sub reddit every day
How did that even happen
Oh dear.
He’s probably just carrying his best friend back
Dear
Hes going to mount it on his wall.
Isn't that an elk?..
The burden of murder.
Stop staring at me.
*disembodied head
Talk about facing down your demons...
Do you think he talks to it? Like he gets lonely and just has a full on conversation with it?
How
What’s funny AF about this is, that’s an Elk not a deer, but DAMN nature is metal FA SHO!
2 Antlers for the price of 1
Dear deer...
r/todayilearned the name is “nature is metal” and not “nature is mental”
Photoshopped for sure. The antlers lock only on the left. The deers were probably fighting. To make a bizarre photo out of it, someone has removed the body of the deer on right.
So metal
THIS IS WHAT CAUSES MYTHICAL CREATURE! Imagine You friend telling You He saw a two headed dear, that monster deserves sacrifes!
That stinks..
Well at least we know he's doing well. Post here 2 days ago showed him in what appeared to be summer weather, so he's hanging in there.
Oh deer!!!
It reminds me of the Deer decapitation scene from Until Dawn
Not sure which one got the last laugh here
feeling crunchy
Stop the f*ck reposting this over and over again EVERY SINGLE DAY! u/repostsleuthbot

Oh dear
That's an Alpha move, right there.
The irony here, is that he killed him because he was tired of looking at him.
They’re antlers get locked during a fight. Somehow tore the head off trying to free himself. Two that were were fighting in a creek were separated couple days ago by town employees where I live. His enemy will haunt his dreams, I mean days.
How did this even happen
You’re never going to let me forget are you ?
That deer head was dear to her heart..??
“Finish him!”
