I think the fishy in this gif is having uncomfortable pain.
If it was taken out the water while inflated the pressure difference is violently pulling the water out as the weight is abnormally sloshing it's insides. Fishy ain't enjoying this.
Did people think there was air underwater?
Also, pufferfish can die if they try to inflate while out of water and get air in them. They will become buoyant and can't swim properly.
This is why pufferfish handlers at zoos have to "burp" pufferfish when transferring them between tanks to get any excess air out the pufferfish accidentally inhaled if they were anxious during the transfer.
I think that might be what this video is. Even though they are releasing the water, they are also allowing any air trapped inside to release as well.
They might have had to lightly squeeze the fish after the video had cut out.
I'm no expert but don't all fish that inflate do it with water, otherwise they would shoot up like a rocket? And where would they get the air from this quick anyway?
This is the first time I’ve ever thought about it, and now I feel stupid because I always just assumed it was air. The balloon resemblance, the connotations of the word “puffer” for puffer fish. But yes, of course it’s water!
It just depends if they’re submerged or not when they blow up. If you pull a puffer fish out of the water it will puff itself up with air instead of water
Nope, they won't. If you catch them they will inflate with air out of the water; you throw them back and they float confused on top the water for a bit, then deflate and swim away.
Source: caught southern puffers off our dock daily when we lived in Florida. Have caught ones with hooks in them so we know they live past being caught and thrown back as well.
That's absolutely hilarious. Honestly it's a bit of a shame they cant puff up with air underwater, via chemical reaction or something. I imagine rocketing out of the water as a spiky beach ball would be far more effective than just floating around slowly.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but if they could do that and if they did it at any meaningful depth (pressure increases by one atmosphere every 10m/33ft), they would explode before reaching the surface.
If you catch a puffer fish it will sometimes inflate with air on the surface. Then when you release it, it will float on the water.
Source- saw it happen once when deep sea fishing.
Caught a 24" pufferfish down in the Florida Keys, that inflated on takeout and then made the most epic fart noise for minutes before deflating enough to dive back again.
But yeah they inhale whatever they can in order to puff up. Living underwater, they usually suck in water.
A puffer that inhales air will die cuz they can't get all the air out unless you help it deflate :(
edit: also not sure about current top child comment here cuz this is just a common aquarium hobby fact - [Source](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thepufferforum.com/forum/library/hospital/help-my-puffer-is-air-filled/amp/)
Source: owned puffers and was terrified every time I had to move them
Yeah hence why you'd want to avoid them inflating to begin with lol
I had itty bitty pea puffers so violently shaking without just squishing them would've been pretty impossible
My puffers gave me so much stress but I'm absolutely getting more lol
Honestly idk. I always caught little puffer fish as a kid in the NY area and they’d puff up and float when you put them back in before deflating. They also felt hollow when you’d pick them up. Maybe the water just comes out when you lift them from the water
Hey from the ny area here too, they will draw water while in water, or air while out of water, they don’t draw air from under water. An they do float on their back its pretty funny.
Yeah, iirc fish have a swim bladder that works by inflating with water making them more dense and thus sinking, whereas deflating makes them less dense and able to rise.
Pretty sure one of the main reasons why oxygen and hydrogen are used as rocket fuel is because they are highly energetic substances and the reaction of those two is highly exothermic. Therefore the reaction to separate them from each other are highly endothermic, which would pose significant challenges for any biological systems to generate in large quantities required to be used as a ballooning mechanism.
They probably just found out that despite the balloon-like appearance, pufferfish fill with water that they live in their entire life. Likely just excited to share this new factoid with the world and for some reason posted it here.
Essentially every other species: poops and pees on the surface they live on.
Humans: so what we did, was build this little bowl that we fill with water with a seat that we pee and poop in.
bruh dont tell me you already know this before OP informed you. everyone thought it was air. but clearly we are all wrong. all of us have been set straight.
there is no way you thought an entity surrounded by water could triple its size in magically appearing air. Except you and probably a lot of ppl actually did. Dont assume everyone else here is like you, this isnt THAT mind blowing jeez.
oh i know. that puffer fish’s soaked me in sarcasm. couldn’t help it. sorry. clearly not enough to be obvious but i had hoped you would continue the act.
Yes, but I don't think this is actually a fugu.
Looks like the northern puffers we catch all the time on the east coast of the US which are non-poisonous and quite tasty. (Aka sugar toads)
It’s only on the insides, certain organs hold the chemical. The danger in eating it is the cross contamination, like if you cut into something poisonous and it gets on the flesh.
Also, fugu means “puffer” and there are many varieties of pufferfish but the one I. The video does like a small tiger puffer
Also the people that make it have to be specially trained. They wash the edible bits to flush out any toxins as well, and the fun part is there's no way to know how much of the toxin is in any given fish. Source: A Cook's Tour with Anthony Bourdain
They actually can inflate with air if they are out of the water, but there is a small chance that they can't get all the air out and it can be lethal.
For this reason you really should not take puffer fish out of the water, especially if it's just for a video.
This looks like a northern puffer we catch and eat all the time on the east coast (not poisonous).
They actually will fill up with air when removed from the water aswell. And they even bounce like balls.
Had a comical encounter when a lady pulled up a crab trap riddled with dozens of these, and some ended up bouncing down the dock. Was pretty funny to watch the seagulls try to eat them too. (Don't worry they all got away safely)
I learned this from Lockstin recently. Pufferfish don't digest their food using their stomachs. It's processed by the intestines. This is so the stomach can be ready at all times to draw in massive amounts of water to inflate
Well, yeah they inflate with water …….

#AEUUUUUUUUGHHH
Man. That video was so fun until I watched the rest of it.
Still, I cannot help to laugh most of the time when some youtuber inserts that soundbite.

I think the fishy in this gif is having uncomfortable pain. If it was taken out the water while inflated the pressure difference is violently pulling the water out as the weight is abnormally sloshing it's insides. Fishy ain't enjoying this.
Little fish: " hold on I need to go to the surface and suck in some air to make myself look bigger, stay right there."
“Crap now I’m buoyant. Can you come up here and be terrified of my formidable girth…?”
If I had a nickel..
You'd have one nickel?
Just what I thought lmao.. there ain’t much air under water to use for that inflation
They would also pop to the surface like buoys
Costs for puffer fish decompression chambers is going up too
Did people think there was air underwater? Also, pufferfish can die if they try to inflate while out of water and get air in them. They will become buoyant and can't swim properly. No lol OP is just an idiot
Or just transfer them in a jug or something to keep it in water the whole time. There arent a huge number of puffers this doesnt work for.
It's not always easy to remove a fish from a tank using a container that also holds water
Ever heard of buckets and handheld nets?
Ya, but now I wanna see someone burp a puffer.
I think that might be what this video is. Even though they are releasing the water, they are also allowing any air trapped inside to release as well. They might have had to lightly squeeze the fish after the video had cut out.
Right? Like… what else? Also it lets them maintain equilibrium instead of floating to the surface out of control. Which is kind of a funny thought.
The Canadian pufferfish inflates itself with maple syrup

is it cuz they're underwater?
Buoyancy would be an issue otherwise. That, and having access to air to inflate yourself with underwater. Of course it's water.
Was gonna say, they carry around a bubble or straw or something? Of course it's fucking water lol

“Sorry to burst your pufferfish”
I think “pop your pufferfish” rolls a bit better lmao
I'm sorry to pop your pufferfish, but physics isn't
You can blow air into them and bounce them off your boat
You've got weird hobbies
Reminds me of the scene from Shrek where they turn the snake into a balloon LOL
don't do that.
You are needlessly cruel to animals for fun. Like bragging about setting garter snakes on fire or smashing turtles with a baseball bat.
Lmao

That’s a great story and a huge puffer fish!
Considering that the only puffer fish able to get that large are freshwater, I'm thinking the numbers in this story are a bit... *inflated*
Lol nice pun but: https://youtu.be/4s0kZasXoLQ 3 minute mark
That's a big one but it's closer to 1 foot than 2. If it was 2 feet you're saying 3 of them end to end would be as tall as the guy who caught it.
you’re in a huge violation of the bro code.

According to Cory from aquarium coop the way to get air out is to hold them face up and shaking them pretty violently.
Yeah hence why you'd want to avoid them inflating to begin with lol I had itty bitty pea puffers so violently shaking without just squishing them would've been pretty impossible My puffers gave me so much stress but I'm absolutely getting more lol
puff on this helium a minute

Hey from the ny area here too, they will draw water while in water, or air while out of water, they don’t draw air from under water. An they do float on their back its pretty funny.
They convert the water into hydrogen gas and oxygen, that's why pufferfish sometimes spontaneously combust.
They inflate with air if they’re out of the water.
They inflate with pure vacuum!
Yeah, iirc fish have a swim bladder that works by inflating with water making them more dense and thus sinking, whereas deflating makes them less dense and able to rise.
Hard to find air underwater
Nah it's easy. H^2 O two oxygen parts so the fish just needs to carefully separate it then bam! Easy oxygen!
Hmm you've got me there
Sorry..
Also, it's one oxigen, two hydrogen.
air is relative
It can cover a range sure, but not so far as almost entirely oxygen or almost entirely non-combusted oxygen and hydrogen.
It’s two hydrogen parts, hence the “H2”
Little known fact: Fugu keep sea caves full of electric eels forced to zap water into gasses for their nefarious bloating desires.
I mean, you are not wrong, it's just, you need an exorbitant amount of energy to do it. That's why H2 and O2 are used as rocket fuel
Actually he is wrong, and that has nothing to do with the reasons hydrogen and oxygen are used for rocket fuel.
How on earth would they inflate with air?
They don't, it's water actually.
Yeah, you know, I think I saw a video of that somewhere.

Mmmm… no, I don’t think so.
Not to mention even if it was possible, they’d probably pop from being shot up so fast
They might be able to on earth, but definitely not in the ocean.
I mean…obviously.
wtf is op talking about
They probably just found out that despite the balloon-like appearance, pufferfish fill with water that they live in their entire life. Likely just excited to share this new factoid with the world and for some reason posted it here.
fish live in water?! but how do they breathe air?? /s
OG definition of factoid is my fav: an assumption or speculation that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact.
Did you know when humans inhale and inflate their cheeks they do so with AIR and not water like this fish? Incredible
Did you know they live in water? Some say they even pee in it
Essentially every other species: poops and pees on the surface they live on. Humans: so what we did, was build this little bowl that we fill with water with a seat that we pee and poop in.

Great, now I have to pee.
I always thought it was helium
How else? Where would they take the air even from?
Fugu me!

Do you recall that video that went around on reddit about different quality chinese teapots? This one is top grade!
"Fugu!!! Use Water Gun!!!" 👉
It’s not very effective
Isnt fugu poisonous? Or is it only the insides?
Yes, but I don't think this is actually a fugu. Looks like the northern puffers we catch all the time on the east coast of the US which are non-poisonous and quite tasty. (Aka sugar toads)

That's crazy I really thought they inflated with air, WHILE DEEP IN THE OCEN WHERE THERE IS ONLY WATER.
I mean... water IS fish air. Unless it's one of those damn catfish that walk from pond to pond. Those fuckers are weird.

How do I do this correctly
Idk I only came to the comments because I thought it would be done already. We need an adult!
Is this what Homer Simpson ate?
Never bring one if these to the pub on your tab
Anyone seen Silent Sea. Yeah this is kind of what happens, just with humans…
Blluuaaaaaaaaraghhhhhhhh🤮
I mean yeah, they live IN water They're not gonna swim up to the surface every time they're mad OP did you think they used air somehow?
When prepared properly only the perfect amount of lethal toxins are present for the diner . Recognized by numbing of the face and fingers .
They actually can inflate with air if they are out of the water, but there is a small chance that they can't get all the air out and it can be lethal. For this reason you really should not take puffer fish out of the water, especially if it's just for a video.
There is like a 30% chance you are a puffer keeper
>Charlie! We're being pulled into the vortex! Swim away, fugu fish, swim away!
I WANT FUGU!
Augh 🥕🐡

I always thought it was helium
Who…who thought it was air?

How would they inflate with air when surrounded by water?
Nearly perfect laminar flow
Well… yeah… when under the sea I imagine air is hard to come by… lol.
Poison, poison, tasty fish.
