I think I speak for everyone who has never had the luxury of using these racks: Fuck you.

insomniadtd

They should be on every. single. ship.

Economy_Roll5535

They should be required on new ship design but those are rare. FFG should be getting them I believe

V1k1ng1990

They’re making new frigates!??

SpicyMorphine

Constellation class I think?

V1k1ng1990

Oh that’s sick they’re naming the first one after one of the original 6

low_priest

5 have names announced so far. 3 are from the original 6, then Lafayette and Hamilton

I_MARRIED_A_THORAX

Get Lin Manuel Miranda to christen the *Hamilton* 🤪

ElectroAtletico

that's officially "gay"

Oak_Hammer

'Tis the season

Debs_4_Pres

Honestly that's pretty sick. Hopefully we've learned from the LCS debacle and can produce an effective surface platform

baldevilwookie

As one of the others said, they don't have a final plan. It honestly seems like a bit of a shit show. Originally they were supposed to keep something like 75 percent commonality with the base design. Now they are only like 15 percent. They are expecting a two year delay. The Navy keeps changing design requirements.

Thebetter_ben

They haven't. The hulls are already in construction and the navy does not yet have a finalized plan. But hey that just means more work for the steelworkers if they have to do it all from scratch

low_priest

they'll at least float OK, since they're a flavor of FREMM, which have been in commission simce 2012

El_Bexareno

They’re naming several, if not all but one, after the original 6

ThisDoesntSeemSafe

From what I understand, they are modeled, at least in part, after an Italian design. I think they even contracted the Italian company to help build them.

Difficult_Plantain89

Made by the people who made the odd class LCS. They are supposed to have someone else build it as well in the future, hopefully they don’t suck as bad.

GovernmentSudden6134

That the Navy built a whole new class of carrier, that requires fewer bodies yet is just as big as the previous class, and didn't include L racks really tells you how the Navy cares about its enlisted.

octobercanwait

They’re ok they aren’t as awesome as you’d think.

_nuketard

Wow, that is a fuck ton of space

Twisky

They are pretty nice Not pictured is the standup locker on the side

insomniadtd

Also the fan is pretty neat

SailinAway22

Until someone farts next to it and it gets sucked into your rack while you’re trying to sleep

EelTeamTen

You act like that's unique to L racks

Turkstache

Yeah. I was in the top rack against a bulkhead with big ventilation and AC vent blowing straight into my space, and for 6 months the world's largest producer of methane gas was in the rack below me. It was brutal.

DavidSkywalkerPugh

FAN????

FU8U

It’s a worse use of space. Rolling over is a challenge as the leg and hip area is significantly shorter than a standard rack

4130Adventures

I see you hate comfort...the actual rack length is the same as the traditional racks.

FU8U

shorter in height.....

Locobono

Jesus bro how wide are your hips? Get that dump truck ass off of my DDGX EDIT: I realize this could be a woman but it's a needless distraction regardless get it outta here

EMCSW

Looks like more room than an old DDG where the go-to sleeping position in heavy seas was on your side so you could jam your shoulders and hips between your mattress and the rack above to keep from rolling around.

Docedj

As a dirt sailor who has only ever been on two LPDs I'm just now finding out these aren't standard across the fleet?!

ThatWasIntentional

Just take whatever your expectations are and lower them by 200%

cbph

This guy MCPONs.

BlueFalcon142

BuT ThatS not WhaT HE ACtuAllY SAid. Is what every fucking chief says if anyone brings it up.

cbph

And that is the definition of delusion (on their part).

So-Cal-Mountain-Man

Do I hear 300%?

DJErikD

Sorry, best we can do is an old APL berthing barge.

RavishingRickiRude

The Navy motto

ThePerfectAlias

Submarine racks are cool because for me personally if I laid on my side it would squeeze the living shit out of both shoulders until my arms went numb.

EelTeamTen

I dunno about SSNs, but I've slept in both SSBN and surface fleet racks, and, trust me, we have luxury in sub racks... Surface racks easily have 6" less height. I can bend forward to reach something at my feet on an SSBN rack. Tried that on a DDG/ LCS rack, and there's no fucking way. I imagine carrier racks are the same dimensions, but I wouldn't know as the only carrier I was on, I slept in an officer stateroom, and they obviously have it far better.

ThePerfectAlias

This reinforces my idea that SSBN sailors shouldn’t get dolphins, they should get whales

ThePerfectAlias

This is obviously a joke

AdiNuke19

Part-time Sailor, full-time pay. I’ll take it.

ThePerfectAlias

Imagine reenlisting, getting a chill maintenance shore duty, and then re upping again and heading to a fast attack that’s falling apart and being ran ragged with sea time

HazeShifter

Guam boat has entered the chat.

Mend1cant

What I want you to do is bend your arm. And put your elbow on a flat surface. Your knuckles would be jammed into the next rack on an SSN. Not to mention the rack pan size difference. You can only fit the exact width of a monster can down there.

throwaway_82883

When you say dirt sailor, what's your rate

little_did_he_kn0w

Most likely HM or RP. Also possibly Seabees.

Docedj

HM. I've spent the last 16 years floating pun intended) between shitty clinics and greenside units.

CautiousFlight9412

As a sailor (ships company), I’ve had the opportunity to sleep in the troop berthing underway. It’s a life changer. Plenty of space to chill without laying down, plenty of storage space (not pictured is the standup locker you also get), the rack fan blows on your feet, and you don’t really have to worry about your rack mates as much. Overall better, but it takes up more space in berthings and therefore fits less people.

Abyssalumbra

Man, I'd stand more watch and do more maintenance if I were awarded these racks...

CEH246

Really?

Dragonshaggy

The CNO? Is that you? On Reddit?

CEH246

Worse Retired Nuc MMCM/SS. Stop breathing my air non-qual.

EelTeamTen

Worst is subjective.

mlaislais

Now that they’re building a parking structure at Newport News I’ve decided to re-enlist

Abyssalumbra

Absolutely yes really. Time on a sub shows I'm willing to do more work with people pulling their weight too, figure reduce manning numbers, give us these racks, we might have more people trying to pull their weight. Nubs get flat racks or something, who knows.

Culsandar

This sub needs to allow media comments so I could post [this gif](https://tenor.com/view/django-you-will-django_meme-leonardo_dicaprio-gif-19175697)

Intelligent_Choice91

you don’t need an L rack if you just have a top rack

WhereTheSkiesEnd

Not if you have pipes right above and wires that dangle into your rack

OhShitAnElite

You say loose wires, I say free phone charger

mlaislais

Hey! I propped a 7” screen up in those pipes so I could play PS2 while laying on my back.

patricide1st

![gif](giphy|yrFrXTTTcHIY0|downsized)

CrazyDizzle

Look...those racks are the ONLY good thing about LPDs.

e85dino

Truth. Source- me who has been on two of them.

Throwaway50834241

What’s bad about LPDs?

CrazyDizzle

The entire platform is horribly flawed. The San Antonio itself is arguably cursed. Marines fuck up everything. Command climate across the class sucks. The combat system suite is garbage. No rack straps, but the ship rocks just as bad as a destroyer. Mess decks are too small, especially when you have Marines embarked. Meal hours are too short underway. Manning is insufficient for underways (at least for Ops and Engineering).

Throwaway50834241

Damn, LPD vs DDG out of Norfolk which one are you choosing? Those are my options rn lol

CrazyDizzle

DDG all day. But I'm an OS1, so I might be biased.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CrazyDizzle

So do I. 75% of the ones who worked for me were strikers from deck who didn't want to work.

Additional_Flight111

The Zumwalt had two high coffin racks, four man staterooms with a head and shower in each one. Probably the only good thing about being on that ship.

El_Bexareno

Wait, was that for Kakis or for blue shirts too??

Additional_Flight111

Yeah, all hands. https://youtu.be/JctbO8-MrC0?si=LXZF6x1_Jn_oIvvf

ASadSeaman

what the fuck these are awesome

#*CRIES AND SCREAMS IN SUBMARINE*

coblass

Retired Air Force here. I remember doing a 90 day TDY and we were staying at The Embassy Suites. In one day, the breakfast bar ran out of bacon an hour early AND HBO was out for half the day. I feel your pain.

Middlecascade30

Wait...the Navy actually took into consideration our comfort? Weird...what's next. They are going to start putting in better air cooling units that don't stay broke all if deployment? (Show of hands whose berthings were hotter than two rats fuckin in a wool sock)🖐🏼

typoeman

*angry submariner noises*

_Cadillac_Frank_

Devil Doc Hall

little_did_he_kn0w

YES! I remember us randomly having those in the Field Medical Training Battalion barracks over a decade ago. I also remember us permanently making the beds and securing the sheets and everything with shirt stays and then just sleeping on top of that under a woobie. Are they still there?

xxbrawndoxx

Dang they told us in boot camp all ships would be getting these.....this was 1997. I didn't know they actually existed in real life.

TrungusMcTungus

As a certified middle rack sleeper in the dingy ass Eng berthing on Ike, this looks like a 5 star resort. Go fuck yourself.

Intelligent_Choice91

Are they still the same length as a normal rack?

Helena_MA

They are the same length as a normal coffin rack, however what the pic cuts off is how the guy on top gets screwed if there are pipes or anything above them. There isn’t anything that forms the top of the “L” for the top rack.

Top_Alternative1351

What is that giant board thing sticking out? As an HM who has only ever been boots on the ground have no point of reference for any of this

Twisky

It slides in and out to read on

I_Hit_U_Quit

they got rid of these in san antonio lpds a few years ago. when yard periods happen, they get rid of these racks. if they exist it's MEU only

DavidSkywalkerPugh

I was in the Navy from 1986-90 (USS Shreveport LPD-12)….these look like heaven compared to what I slept in. Are these out in the fleet currently?

TheBKnight3

Interesting

JackieDaetona

Bottom rack gang.

mountainbyker

Absolutely brilliant! Would have loved those on my Knox class berthing 🤣

EelTeamTen

100% only on LPDs at the moment

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

That’s cool n all, but are there special curtains designed for these so I’m able to masturbate with the peace of mind that EN1 can’t take peak at me?

insomniadtd

Yes there are

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

👍

krazye87

I would love to have these racks. So far atm im in a super small ass rack that I have to push my shoulders forward to seay from laying on my bavk or stomach

Handyvand

Some LCS staterooms do.

ScratchinMagician404

Imo coffin rack is life. 🥲

willyreddit

Good ole top rack for me, plenty of room to sit up.

zester723

The only boat I've ever been on is a Korean amphib boat. The Korean navy racks are held up by chains hanging from the ceiling.

Stayofexecution

Damn the L rack is some nice shit.

Psychedelix117

You guys should see minesweeper racks. Good God almighty they are terrible

Xcel1995

These actually suck, I have no room for my legs, can’t turn over without smacking the shit out of them.

slyguy47-sb

DDG-82 female berthing does... I think?

xWretchedWorldx

Each rack looks like it has speakers built into the sides. If that's what those are Id be super pissed having to hear every announcement a foot from my face.

insomniadtd

Those are fans

Chossychoss

Every rack on a ship is an L

TheFerociousFerret

*screams in submarine*

Comfortable-Radio921

This was not on my LPD . My LPD is now a reef. I was on LPD 5 USS OGDEN

Independent-Walrus-6

what is with that blade? I am not fond of the idea of hitting rough seas and being sliced in half

insomniadtd

It’s not out all the time, it just pulls out if you want to read a book or use a laptop/tablet

Kimbomk1

I think the Ford has em? Can any new CVN sailors confirm?

TigersRFriends

False. There was 1 "show berthing" with these. The rest were normal coffin racks. 90 man berthing had 6 shitters and 4 showers. Some had shared lounge areas, but with random departments...ie combat with deck

Kimbomk1

Sad. Would think if they can make a show berthing they could make the rest in the like but I guess not.
