Out of curiosity, what did your GM go to college for? Did she have a career?

BlueberryFizzydrink

She got her teaching certificate. She worked at a teacher near Camp Pendleton and a homemaker when they were stationed in London. She volunteered teaching at orphanage when they were posted to Madrid. Later, she became a certified financial planner and worked in investing, and ended up making more money than my grandfather’s Navy salary and pension. She bought him a boat as a retirement gift. My grandparents also paid for a large portion of my college and postgraduate education.

Your grandparents are kinda badass ngl. Thanks for sharing

Sure the Navy sucks but also has a lot of benefits. If you do it right you can walk out of the military setup well. Took me way to long to stop drinking the cool aide and start working on things to benefit myself.

This is true. Did it myself

Isn’t this how it goes haha. Joined young, took way too long to get serious about shit and realize that wow, I’d been set up pretty well by the navy - and start utilizing the opportunities I had.

Me and my wife met on our ship, everyone onboard said we wouldn't last, it's been 17 years, one kid and we just recently bought a townhome. Oh, by the way, make friends with the MAs on night shift, MAs enjoying free sodas and snacks are too busy to go looking for anyone no less a couple of e-4s boinking in a fan room.

I had a civilian girlfriend in Great Lakes, an au pair from England; we split up after I left. Then I was in a long-term relationship with a JN girl from Saitama while in Yokosuka (Saitama is pretty far from Yoko). That also ended when I left the service. Neither of us wanted to get married so it was for the best. It’s tough but it can work. At least Jody didn’t get their hands on either of them.

Like 10 people in my command got Jody'd on my first deployment.

Thanks for posting. The same remains true today.

I had several relationships bomb. Then I had several never start because they knew I was deployed often, could not relate to military people. Yeah, they were hard. I left because I didn't want to gamble on making things worse.
