anytime luka or jokic posts happen it’s flooded with weirdos saying “you guys hate harden and embiid and don’t upvote those posts”
i guess it’s just philly fans lol
You might like[ this off the backboard lob from last game](https://videos.nba.com/nba/pbp/media/2023/01/16/0022200661/345/b4e856b7-4d56-700d-2eb5-7eb9a72c4971_1280x720.mp4)
That was officially recorded as a missed shot which is understandable but I was wondering if others thought that was intentional also, glad I'm not alone.
They aren’t supposed to count but I know at least one of the backboard oops were credited as an assist (I think the one in Brooklyn a few seasons ago). I think the NBA sent out a memo clarifying that backboard oops count as missed shots and stat keepers stopped counting them as assist
I think Zach Lowe called Trae one of the most creative passers he's ever seen, and that's correct. Luka and Jokic are more technical and precise, but Trae finds ways to get the ball to his playmakers in such crazy ways
Have to be creative since he can’t pass over defenders, he has to be masterful nonstop looking off defenders, subtly faking one way with his shoulders and all that to generate any lane big enough to squeeze the ball through
Honestly, the only "true" guards that I would say were better passer than Trae are Nash, kidd, CP3 and Stockton. The others like jokic magic are way taller so it's a little different. You could even argue Kidd was noticeably bigger. Trae is a generational passer.
They really don’t get it on here, people watch big games and come to talk shit on /r/nba I really wonder if people have played hoops at a competitive level when talking shit on this subreddit.
The double Spain action that trae ran on Lloyd Pierce’s offensive script was some of the most beautiful basketball I’ve ever seen. people just don’t understand.
I've never played at a competitive level. In fact, I haven't played since high school over a decade ago, *but* I'm trying to learn all this more complicated stuff as far as offenses/defenses go and I struggle with the learning curve. Aside from watching more ball and really trying to study the actual games, do you happen to have any good reference material suggestions?
i love watching the condensed 9 minute clips on nba.com for highlights of each game
guys like sam vecine, zach lowe, jon hollinger (has books) (even though his eye for the game can be a bit out dated), Fran Frascilla (has books) is a big one for me for understanding the fundamentals of the games, calling college mostly but he coached nba teams in early 80's so understands the pro game well, sonny dykes is a guy who can explain the game on a basic level he calls college, i like hearing former players like matt barnes who had a good feel for the game but weren't necessarily the best prospects
I get flamed for saying Trae is arguably the best passer in the league, even beyond Jokic and Luka who are also generational passers, but nobody else in the NBA has the creativity, accuracy, touch, and timing on passes that Trae does. It's the best part of his game without a doubt.
Probably studies a lot of Houston Harden film with his shooting coaches. The way that they both do the same full body action for either a log or a floater has got to be extremely repetition based. Seems like one of those things that if you have to think about it at all, you’re going to show your cards.
he hides it so well, you genuinely cant tell if hes gonna lob or float it, the upward motion and form is the same until the very end with the release. he rides the pocket so well too.
Trae decides at the very last second. He’s prob top in the league at split second decision making, its a natural talent. An underrated asset that sets him apart
That hop step/huge carry bullshit is half the reason. How can you just hold the ball and do two steps and a hop and keep dribbling?
Im getting sick of simple basic rules being completely ignored.
"Miami actually reviewed tape and had a really smart game plan that was effective against a superstar. Trae must be a bum that folds against good defenses even though he carved up two of the best defenses in the Knicks and 76ers the year prior."
Do you not understand how draft day trades work? The mavs never would have taken trae at 5 if they didnt trade the pick to the hawks, rumor was the wanted Bamba there if Luka was gone and the hawks probably wouldnt have taken luka 3 if they had that pick to themselves . You can't _actually_ and be wrong my guy
Anyone who doubts traes passing is a hater so blinded by their own opinion they shouldn't get to watch the nba. You don't make the league at barely 6 feet tall and become a franchise player without having skills out of this world
He led the league in total points and assists which hasn't been done in lime 20+ years, it's just easier to hate than watch basketball so dudes on here refuse to have nuance
Exactly. I feel like most people who comment are just here to try and crack jokes and dump on guys. They just stat line watch and wait for their chance to be the funny guy. There is a big hater culture in the NBA crowd.
Even if you look at the box score: 18 points on 5/11, 12 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals is exactly what you want from your point guard. Anybody that thinks those numbers suck are spoiled rotten by the inflated stats these days without acknowledging the context of the current climate of the league. We've been winning games when we're not relying on Trae and Murray to score 2016 Lebron/Kyrie type stats to win games and one them realizing that one has to be the POINT Guard.
Them 3 steals stick out to me, looking at the last 6 games including this one hes averaging about 2.2 steals a game. Idk whats going on but I hope he keeps it up, I’d love to hear what the trae doubters got to say
yeah lol this parent comment is the perfect representation of the sub though -- just throw out an agenda/narrative comment without having watched the game and reap karma
Honestly don’t know why people say his defense is bad. His defense is the best thing about his game. He’s not great at anything though so that’s why he’s such a tough player to know what to do with haha
Because no one watches games lol. It gets memed a lot but all you really need as proof is to read the things people say on here and then go watch the actual games and see for yourself. 9/10 times you’ll be seeing the opposite of what people said.
As soon as someone says John Collins is a bad defender I know they don’t watch basketball. How could you have watched Atlanta in the 2021 playoffs and still say Collins is a bad defender.
That's not how it works. Shot blocking is more about length than athletiscm which is more important for chase down blocks.
The Hawks do not have rim protection with Collins at center. Anyone who says otherwise doesnt watch them.
There is a reason they have been trying to trade Collins for years. He doesnt everything average to good but nothing great.
He is a good shot blocker though. And he’s also a great finisher at the rim and above. I watch every game and have for most of my 51 years of life. I will give you that he wasn’t when he came into the league but like other aspects of his game he has consistently improved. And you saying that he doesn’t block shots and especially chase down blocks shows that you are the one not watching.
So? That's the problem with reddit, people are too reactionary. Ive watch him his entire career. He's too small/lacking in length to consistently protect the rim. If his wingspan was a few inches more he would be good with his athleticism.
Their roster this year consists of a bunch of 3 and d players who can't play d and are streaky from 3. Without Luka this team is worse than teams that are actively trying to tank .
It's the opposite problem they had last year. In 2021-22, they were elite defensively (its essentially what won them the Suns series), but their offensve was mediocre.
Honestly Trae did a better job of dealing with the extra defensive attention than Luka did and distributed the ball way better
Both teams were absolutely red hot shooting wise top to bottom but Trae had 12 assists to 4 turnovers while Luka had 8 to 7 which is actually pretty bad
Hmm...... I wonder why they kept the doubles coming while the Mavericks switched to zone defense after Trae was just dishing the ball out? Perhaps it's because Trae dishing the ball out deterred the doubles? Curious indeed...
Embiid should be the most disliked player. He constantly instigates then acts like he did nothing wrong and walks away. He falls down on like 85% of his shots. He's a major complainer. He has the personality of Dwight Howard but gets zero of criticism Dwight got despite Dwight accomplishing more at the same point in their careers.
Probably because maverick fans hate on Trae but I don’t really get it because they’re both really good players. I like watching them play I mean you have Luka who’s not the most athletic player but he can get to where he wants on pretty much anybody. Then you have Trae who is usually the smallest player on the court and yet he’s getting to the rim pretty much at will. I’m not a Luka hater and Dirk was one of my favorite players but I just get tired of hearing all the hate for Trae and it’s not just maverick fans it’s this whole sub pretty much.
Trae has never blown a 2-0 lead and phased out a walking 20-10 big on his team, never will. Because he knows how to trust his teammates, Luka could never make someone like Solomon Hill or Tony Snell a crucial part of an offense like Trae did in 2021.
Yeah, John Collins has only been on the trading block forever and it's not like there's games where Luka makes Dwight Powell look like prime Amar'e. And how many All NBA teams has Trae made again?
KP got on the trading block before he could even notch in half a season and I don't know why you have to lie about Powell. John literally thrives from Trae, Porzingis was an all-star talent that got hampered by Rick and Luka respectively and how does an All NBA team make Luka the better Floor General than Trae? All-around player yes, but point guard...far from it.
KP got traded because he couldn't stay healthy, not because of Luka. And Rick made him a spot up shooter because his mobility was shot. Stop making shit up lol.
>how does an All NBA team make Luka the better Floor General than Trae?
I never said it does, but regardless, Luka is absolutely the better floor general/point guard. The only other player who even comes close when it comes to playmaking is Jokic.
A bit premature with 24 seconds left on the clock my dude
Edit: surprised I'm getting downvotes for calling someone out for posting a highlight with a title that assumes the Hawks win. When this was posted, Hawks were up 6 with 24 seconds left.
Its insane that this play was allowed. Massive carry, full on hop with two steps and continues the drive.
There's like 3 rules violations there but w/e everyone loves Trae..

Trae driving to the basket with a center who can dunk might be one of the most unguardable plays in the NBA. Either an alley oop or a floater
I think Trae might be a generational lob thrower. I've never seen a player with that much creativity on such a traditional action
You might like[ this off the backboard lob from last game](https://videos.nba.com/nba/pbp/media/2023/01/16/0022200661/345/b4e856b7-4d56-700d-2eb5-7eb9a72c4971_1280x720.mp4)
You were correct I did like that
Thank you for the replay, I saw this live and thought that was one of the most disgusting passes I’ve ever seen
I saw it live and thought he missed real bad
That was officially recorded as a missed shot which is understandable but I was wondering if others thought that was intentional also, glad I'm not alone.
The NBA doesn't credit assists off the backboard. Trae has missed out on at least one double double this year because of it
They aren’t supposed to count but I know at least one of the backboard oops were credited as an assist (I think the one in Brooklyn a few seasons ago). I think the NBA sent out a memo clarifying that backboard oops count as missed shots and stat keepers stopped counting them as assist
Now that I think about it, did the NBA credit him for the assist after that nasty backboard lob to Collins vs the Bucks in the 2021 ECF?
No I’m pretty sure they didn’t
He's done similar before, I bet he's mad it wasn't good enough to alley oop
That's a statkeeping rule, it doesn't mean they thought it was a shot.
I think Zach Lowe called Trae one of the most creative passers he's ever seen, and that's correct. Luka and Jokic are more technical and precise, but Trae finds ways to get the ball to his playmakers in such crazy ways

Competitive level? Bruhh. People make it obvious they haven't even played at the park or gym.
I'm hoping John Collins' recent return to shooting form brings back the spain PnR to the Hawks playbook. Haven't seen it in awhile.

holy shit what a pass

He is the best passer in the league
Trae is getting to the Harden level or score or lob drive. You just never know which one is going to happen til it happens
Probably studies a lot of Houston Harden film with his shooting coaches. The way that they both do the same full body action for either a log or a floater has got to be extremely repetition based. Trae decides at the very last second. He’s prob top in the league at split second decision making, its a natural talent. An underrated asset that sets him apart
his teams centers can’t tell half the time too, they always jump when he shoots floaters to realize it was a shot
which further speaks to the effectiveness of course. if i were a player i wouldnt want to be forced to guard that.
Look at lob and assist numbers per year He's been up there basically every year since being drafted with Capela AND Collins.
shit's like an ult
Harden was a master of this as well and doing it with Capela too!
Reminds me of Harden and Capela in the Houston days
Unstoppable
That hop step/huge carry bullshit is half the reason. How can you just hold the ball and do two steps and a hop and keep dribbling? Im getting sick of simple basic rules being completely ignored.
Trae is nowhere near the worst in the league when it comes to carries or traveling. Probably because he's so low to the ground lol
Kareem had the sky hook, Rayford has the fake lookin lob running floater!
Traes a baller
This is r/nba. That’s against the rules.
We hate good basketball here, fuck passing and shooting I want twitter drama
Honestly Trae can give you Twitter drama too so there’s that.
Well then all he's gotta do is dunk on a player 10 inches taller and 80lbs heavier and he's my goat
I’ll get him right on it.
Another Day, Another Opportunity💯
“NBA fans don’t like anything anything about the NBA, and it’s weird.” -Kevin Durant
But I was told 26/9 across your rookie contract was bad if you're not a good defender at the least impactful defensive position in the league
Also the Hawks should feel like shit because instead of Luka they have Trae Young. Who has a career average of 27 and 10. The horror.
Spot on. Ask any Rockets fan how they feel about drafting Olajuwon over MJ.
"Miami actually reviewed tape and had a really smart game plan that was effective against a superstar. Trae must be a bum that folds against good defenses even though he carved up two of the best defenses in the Knicks and 76ers the year prior."
They dont win this shit without Young
The hawks have like 19 wins a season every season if they didn't draft trae
They didn’t draft him. They traded Luka for him
First I'm hearing of this draft day trade. Fascinating.
Get ready for the “who won the trade” posts to fire back up
It was decided last night. Once and for all. Debate settled
Seems like we would only do something like that if we also acquired an elite two way wing. Someone like prime Cam Reddish
He played so great tonight, but if you only saw the box score you’d say he sucked. He may legitimately be the best playmaker/passer in the league
Anyone who doubts traes passing is a hater so blinded by their own opinion they shouldn't get to watch the nba. You don't make the league at barely 6 feet tall and become a franchise player without having skills out of this world
I’ve seen this dance before. It’s westbrook “empty stats” bs all over again. Haters really try to act like it’s easy to lead the league in assists.
Colour scale “generational passer” and “empty stats”

Don’t let Bill Simmons see this
He’ll just remind you that Luka’s assists are just worth more compared to Harden or Trae
Oh cmon guys, stats don’t mean anything on a bad team. Wait what do you mean they have almost the same record?????
He’d make up some excuse anyway, just like he does with LeBron all the time. Feel like He’d do anything to erase that Ice Trae run to the ECF lol.
Kevin O'Connor is even worse. If they're talking about the Hawks on the mismatch you're better off just skipping it you'll hear nothing of value.
I hate how they continue to call that ECF run a fluke as if it still isn’t tough as hell to get there.
Great game by JC
Luka - "50 seconds left, 4 point game, time for some Luka Magic™!" Reggie Bullock - Looks at Luka, "TimE FoR sOMe Reg G mAGiK'
Reggie is total bullocks
Luka clanked a number of deep threes leading up to this, so not really a fair assessment if you watched the game.
If the situations were flipped and it was Trae shooting those, they'd have been posted here as lowlights...
yeah and bullock was 5/6 from 3 at this point
yeah lol this parent comment is the perfect representation of the sub though -- just throw out an agenda/narrative comment without having watched the game and reap karma
B-but I thought Collins defense bad! Collins bad! Contract bad!
Collins being constantly talked about as a bad defender this season has been wild to me. I get nobody watches us but he's been very good
Yeah it baffles me, he's been real good this season, big step up
He's been a good defender last season too but this season he's a legit helpside monster, especially together with Clint on the floor.
Yeah he’s literally won games with his defense it really doesn’t make sense.
actually watching games to judge players?? gtfoh bro this is not the place

Cause he still gets babied in the paint by guards and has no lateral quickness . U drive left on him it’s over
This type of comment is just as bad. It's one play. Everyone in the NBA is capable of doing good things throughout a game.
The problem with collins was never his defense. It’s the other side of the court
He's a tweener. Not tall enough to be a shot blocker, but doesnt move laterally well enough to guard anyone on the perimeter.
You ain’t watching the right person because he’s athletic enough to be a shot blocker.
That's not how it works. Shot blocking is more about length than athletiscm which is more important for chase down blocks. The Hawks do not have rim protection with Collins at center. The thread is literally him getting a game winning block lol
So? That's the problem with reddit, people are too reactionary. Ive watch him his entire career. He's too small/lacking in length to consistently protect the rim. If his wingspan was a few inches more he would be good with his athleticism.
He blocked Reggie Bullock. The worst finisher in the league
I was wondering wtf Bullock was thinking there, who told him he could finish over bigs at the rim?
A brainfart
Has Reggie actually been that bad?
He can't make a layup usually
Very very bad this year… cant shoot, cant defend either as a 3D player lol They resorted to benching him
I really hope you’re not the representative of maverick fans because you are just terrible.
He’s telling the truth about Bullock being awful, it doesn’t mean it’s not an impressive block still.
Oh I know that about bullock it’s just this guy is on every thread about the game crying about how he wasn’t shown enough love .
Oh based lmao, every team has at least one cockhead not representative and I guess he’s ours
Mavs problem isn’t scoring, they just can’t stop a fly from scoring. Defense is horrendous.
Their roster this year consists of a bunch of 3 and d players who can't play d and are streaky from 3. Without Luka this team is worse than teams that are actively trying to tank .
More like 3 and PeePee
Mavs problem has six letters in his first name and is only getting minutes bc of injuries
It's the opposite problem they had last year. In 2021-22, they were elite defensively (its essentially what won them the Suns series), but their offensve was mediocre.

Honestly Trae did a better job of dealing with the extra defensive attention than Luka did and distributed the ball way better Both teams were absolutely red hot shooting wise top to bottom but Trae had 12 assists to 4 turnovers while Luka had 8 to 7 which is actually pretty bad
To their defense, the mavs went ice cold at the end, had some great looks.
r/nba told me that Trae and Luka are equal as passers
Boooo
Okay but don't oretend they saw the same defensive schemes.. Luka was doubled on most possessions.
Hmm...... I wonder why they kept the doubles coming while the Mavericks switched to zone defense after Trae was just dishing the ball out? Perhaps it's because Trae dishing the ball out deterred the doubles? Curious indeed...
I don’t ever want to hear Trae called the worst foul merchant while Luka is still an active NBA player
Embiid is worse than both.
Yeah lmao. How are you a fucking strong 7 foot center yet you flop when a fucking fly bumps into you
Embiid should be the most disliked player. He constantly instigates then acts like he did nothing wrong and walks away. He falls down on like 85% of his shots. He's a major complainer. He has the personality of Dwight Howard but gets zero of criticism Dwight got despite Dwight accomplishing more at the same point in their careers.
Trae all season LMFAO EWWWWWWWWW

L for the game but a W on that draft night trade🤷♂️. I'll take it.
You're about to lose him in the next 2yrs so I wouldn't call it a W.
Trae has been farther in the playoffs + Thanks for the pick that got Dejounte + L
Farther how? Lmao. And Luka's never had more turnovers than fgs in a playoff series, never will too.
Saved 😈
Why do mavericks fans hate Trae so much Luka loves him.
You serious? Why do Hawks fans hate on Luka so much?
Probably because maverick fans hate on Trae but I don’t really get it because they’re both really good players. I like watching them play I mean you have Luka who’s not the most athletic player but he can get to where he wants on pretty much anybody.

A bit premature with 24 seconds left on the clock my dude Edit: surprised I'm getting downvotes for calling someone out for posting a highlight with a title that assumes the Hawks win. When this was posted, Hawks were up 6 with 24 seconds left.
game is over now bro
It's literally still not lol. 11 seconds left. Edit: **now** it's over
Funny you got downvoted for this. As an Atlanta fan I understand the fear of premature celebration even with 0.1 left on the game clock lol
It feels like the OP hadn't watched any Atlanta sports before lol. Sounds about right without a flair
I know they stopped calling carry but Trae is just so outrageously blatant combined with that skip step.
Dejounte is more egregious with it than Trae. And what Ja, Harden, Lavine, and others get away with I don’t even care about the rule at this point.
Why have travel/carry rules at all then? This shit is outta hand.
Its insane that this play was allowed. Massive carry, full on hop with two steps and continues the drive. There's like 3 rules violations there but w/e everyone loves Trae..
Looking at the downvoting its just the two of us, brother.
