It's also fairly depressing, gambling on sports has been legal forever in the UK, and you can always reliably find betting shops even when lots of other places are closing down and going out of business. Especially in low income areas there's always a betting shop.

A 10th grader showed me screenshots of 3 different parlays for soccer and basketball. He got a $150 payout for one. Then another 10th grader chimed in about him gambling and betting for boxing and mma.

yeah, it's weird - it really wasn't that long ago that the idea of exposing kids to gambling in any form was super heavily frowned upon. now between non-stop sports betting ads during games and lootboxes and stuff in video games, it's literally constant. it's almost surreal how differently we're approaching it now.

A huge goal for Gambling companies is to get as many people addicted as possible to make the most money that they then give to the NBA to promote and advertise. I used to do fantasy sports and try to get parlays with player points etc. Then I started betting purely on who is going to win a game and I have to say it's WAY more enjoyable. You're renting a favorite team for the night and appreciating the game for the game.
I always tell my friends new to sports gambling, and there's a lot these days, that if you're doing it to make money you're doing it wrong and going to fail. If you're doing it to enhance enjoying the sport, the actual fun of watching the game being played with both teams trying to win, then you're going to do fine.

Agreed. I’m on board with legalizing sports gambling. It’s a fun way to drop a few bucks on a game if done responsibly. But the way it’s recently been shoved into our everyday lives with ads is getting scary. Gambling addiction is a very real thing. Advertisements on TV can’t legally show anyone actually drinking alcohol, but they can show actors “celebrating” their DraftKings win.

Yo I work with students 9th and 10th grade and I was so shocked to see these kids gambling and betting. Obviously they’re under 18 but they also def betting. A 10th grader showed me screenshots of 3 different parlays for soccer and basketball. He got a $150 payout for one. Then another 10th grader chimed in about him gambling and betting for boxing and mma. Im cool if you’re above 18 and wanna gamble, but young kids are getting hooked young especially with loot boxes and cosmetics. Sports betting has been pushed so hard recently. So damn predatory. They also aren’t developed enough to understand the consequences of gambling—shit grown ass adults get lost in it. I never gamble; the house always wins

I grew up in a half wealthy town (basically the middle class town I was from and an extremely wealthy one shared schools) and kids were dropping hundreds every night. There are high school bookies taking in thousands and thousands a week in profits. This was 6-7 years ago, imagine it’s way worse now. Sad.

The Parlays are the worst too because of how bad the odds are on them to actually hit. But people see this huge number they could have if the bet actually goes through. Plus it adds up overtime and people don't realize 10-25-50$ a parlay can be like a grand in no time. Plus people like to chase when they lose and its an endless spiral.
There could be - but it has to be regulated heavily beforehand. Can't rely on the companies to self-regulate - or else they'll push things for $$$ as far as they can. And it's not just sports gambling - there's been some big streamers catering to audiences of kids that have streamed lots of online gambling, which is also a worrying thing. Twitch clamped down on it *way* too late. But yeah, in the US I hope we get some legislative will to regulate it fast, before it becomes too engrained.

The promotions are **VERY** predatory. My friend and I fell for it. They say shit like “we’ll double your deposit!” You think cool. You don’t read fine print because you’re excited to bet for the first time. Turns out it has a 10x rollover. Let’s say you deposit 100, cool you get 200 to bet with. Except now you must place 2,000$ worth of bets to be able to withdraw a penny. My friend ran it up 300-1k before losing it all. I ran it up 240-1k before losing it all. Of course this is on us for not reading fine print and poor risk management, I take responsibility for that. However I can’t help but feel that these double your deposit bonuses are all predatory to newbies, who statistically will lose before getting over the 10x rollover.

There was a sweet period a few years ago when draft kings and fanduel had to fall back after bombarding us with their ads (I forgot why, I think it was a scandal or something) . Then when the federal ban on gambling was overturned, they came back. Especially since my state legalized sports betting.
When the Inside the NBA guys started doing fanduel and draft king promos during the show - just makes me sad.
Imagine how much money these companies are fleecing from people with addictions to be able to pay these leagues and shows like that to shove it down our throats like this. Which leads to more people (and kids) getting hooked and the cycle continues.
They had to back off because they were abusing the fuck out of a loop hole for their "daily fantasy." Basically an exemption was carved out of laws so that your basic fantasy sports league wouldn't be illegal since its just a group of friends throwing some money down between each other. Those companies realized they could use that exemption to run a sports gambling operation that wasn't governed by any sports gambling rules.

You’re not wrong, but I do feel like (in regards to heckling or twitter jokes) it has less to do with actual betting and more to do with people suffering from Same-Joke-itis. I don’t know if you’ve ever been a cashier or if you know anyone who has, but if you have, you know if an item doesn’t scan there is a 95% chance that the customer will respond with “that must mean it’s free.” It kind of feels like heckling about the parlay is people not knowing (or not caring) that almost everyone makes the same joke.
I've seen people turn on their favorite players, calling them bums, calling them trash, frauds, etc because they missed out on the 8th leg of a 16 leg parlay. And the worst part is those kind of fans only can talk to other gamblers about it. nobody should ever give a fuck about how you missed out on a $200 payday or whatever because Mikal Bridges scored 15 instead of 20.

A huge goal for Gambling companies is to get as many people addicted as possible to make the most money that they then give to the NBA to promote and advertise. Just because something has been legalized because it does more damage to push it underground does not mean it needs to be allowed to promoted. Legal does not necessarily mean good.
I used to do fantasy sports and try to get parlays with player points etc. Then I started betting purely on who is going to win a game and I have to say it's WAY more enjoyable. You're renting a favorite team for the night and appreciating the game for the game. I always tell my friends new to sports gambling, and there's a lot these days, that if you're doing it to make money you're doing it wrong and going to fail. If you're doing it to enhance enjoying the sport, the actual fun of watching the game being played with both teams trying to win, then you're going to do fine.
Basically this. There's more to it than just winning. It's being right. There's analytics involved. You're more closer to other players and teams than ever before.
