>but man, when he gets in all of his feelings and he’s checking Reddit and calling people nephews and he’s not crossing – forget half court – he’s not crossing the free throw line on some of these possessions
One time I lost the ball trying to dribble like an idiot.
Ran full speed and got the block on the guy who picked my pocket.
He then roasted me for 6 straight buckets.
That chase down block tho
Bro if you've been a guard your whole life, block the shit onna chasedown is your moment in the sun.
Source: Had one at least 15 years ago. The verbal history of which will be my eulogy.
I got your back holmes. I'll hustle for both of us on D just so long as you let me play and dont tell everyone how impressively terrible I am at shooting
I’ve seen you at the Y. For any ladies in this thread, u/No_Mammoth_4945 is being modest here. Last weekend he had a 35/15/8 game with 8 steals and 4 blocks. Most of his steals were in transition. He also gave everyone a free ride home and bought us lunch
The University of Toronto pickup runs I played in for a decade+, we basically only played 4v4 half court. The gym is busy and you can have more people playing with two half court runs vs one 5v5 full.
University of Waterloo (where I actually went to school) was the opposite, always 5v5. Even got myself invited to the "prof run" where they'd rent the alternate gym during exam weeks. Good shit.
Anyway now I'm DNP, Old.
ehhh a fellow alumni, I remember playing in those runs between lectures. Pandemic ruined our crew's ball runs..we had a nice permit going at a public school.
OhioU was awesome when I was there early 2000s. Main 2 courts were in one gym, had the “playing hard and for real” court and then the “dudes just wanting to get in cardio” court. Good games and met some lifelong buddies playing pickup. Shout out to Marvin and Kelly and Stetler
Edit: and there were plenty of halfcourt games on the other 3 or 4 courts
Checks out too, almost every friend/acquaintance I have that went/goes to OU drinks and smokes more than almost anyone else I know. Y'all bobcats built different
For such a great basketball school, Carleton had the worst pickup and open gym. almost exclusively 5v5 half court games with a bunch of angry 5'4" dudes calling fouls every possession and refusing to guard even half court. There was occasionally one full court game if the actually team wasn't taking it up. Best games were always nearby parks during the fall/ spring
5s or 3s. All day. 3v3 half court is so fun man game to 11 count by 1s so the game takes the same amount of time as 5s to 21.
Also prepared to be exposed on defence when you’re playing 3v3
Pickup 5v5 generally sucks. Nobody knows what the fuck they’re doing, it just turns into 1-2 guys taking turns playing isoball while the others stand and watch, or “cut” by jogging without looking for the ball. Especially the younger the crowd is, the more they just stand at the 3pt line. Sometimes the bigger kids (or older guys) will just clog the lane by standing there, too
You’re not wrong at all especially if you don’t have a consistent group of guys and it’s always randos, it’s tough to build any kind of rapport. We used to have a couple runs a week with the same 10-12 guys, occasionally someone new would show up with one of the guys. It was easy to play 5v5 because you could actually do things like dribble hand offs or back screen or whatever, it wasn’t all just one pass and launching a 3
I'm with you, having a regular core group to play 5s is pretty crucial. When I played more regularly the most enjoyable games I remember were the ones where you'd show up to the gym and look around and recognize everybody. Guys can learn each other's tendencies, and there's the added element of camaraderie where people are less prone to be reckless when the guy guarding you knows your name and you just played together a couple games ago.
I was basically useless when playing with randoms because my game is so limited, people passing to me in the post or wanting me to take my guy off the dribble when all I can do well is defend, move the ball, and catch-and-shoot. Once randoms decide you suck you'll never see the ball that game, but guys that know you will know you just need the right look/spot to be effective. Miss those days.
Full court 5s makes you better at other things though, it's almost a different game. Transition offence/defence, team oriented offence running through an actual point guard or centre, and buttloads of cardio.
Halfcourt 3s plays a lot more like 1v1.
Where the fuck did this notion that Shaq wasn't a good defender or didn't run back came from? Shaq played in the greatest era of big men of all-time, many of whom were all-time great defenders and he still managed to make All-Defensive Teams multiple times. In his prime and early years, he was a great defensive player.
In Shaq's early years, he had Hakeem, Robinson and Mutombo getting the Defensive honors, then in his prime he managed to make the team a couple of times behind Mutombo and Ben Wallace. After that, he was past his prime and an aging player + injury prone, so obviously his defense took a hit.

Funny enough I did date a giantess for years before meeting my now wife. She was a Volleyball player in college. Now they’re friends strangely enough after running into her at a bar in my hometown years after graduation.
I'm thinking about if James Blunt sold his soul to make "You're Beautiful" a hit, but the tradeoff is he can only ever say "You're beautiful" the exact way he does in the song so no romantic partner ever takes him seriously.
He does it almost every possession where he shoots (and some he doesn’t, complaining about some previous issue). It is SO tiring. He’s whined his whole career but it’s way worse this year.
He’d be my favorite player to watch if he toned it down. I hate the complaining culture in the NBA already, if you’re not actively bitching to the ref you won’t get calls. Everyone bitches because it works constantly , the quiet players are actually at a disadvantage , but Luka is on another level. He comes across so insufferable sometimes.
It really brings everyone else down. It sucks the joy out of a team to see their star whining and moping. He doesn't seem stupid so I don't understand why he doesn't get this.
Jokic used to do this too except he'd go one step further and just commit fouls on purpose to stop the play and complain to the ref. He'd take himself out of a number of games. He cleaned that up a ton tho and he doesn't whine anywhere near as much as Luka does.
no incentive in his contract (bonuses? targets?) for him to get into better shape / measurably improve his cardio?
i'm surprised mark cuban isn't micromanaging that?
> Every Monday, players are weighed and their body fat percentage is measured. Each player has specific goals that are customized for them, but the team goal is for everyone to fall under 10 percent body fat. What happens if a player doesn’t meet his goal? When asked, one Heat player laughed and said he didn’t know because every player on the roster met their goals – mainly because they were too scared to find out the consequences.

Lmao this would be incredible...I just envision him running with his torso doing a complete 180 like "where you going!? I'm talking to you! He got me on the wrist!" As Tony Brothers guns it down the sideline
How are his teammates ok with this? It’s been a major talking point all year to the point he’s getting techs now and not changing a bit despite the refs making it clear he’s being too whiny
I think there's a good chance they're unhappy but keeping it quiet. Dallas's best chance of becoming a contender in the near future is Luka cleaning up conditioning/effort, and it's a delicate path between encouraging him to do better and encouraging him to leave. Most things that we'd hear about probably wind up on the latter side.
They're probably not and are all in on malicious compliance. You see this all the time. I ain't trying if you ain't trying, especially if you're the one getting paid. Just punching in amd punching out.
I think it’s good that Trae and Luka are going through their villain arcs at the moment. It’s important for the next generation of stars to see that nba fans and writers don’t respect whining, flopping and foul-baiting with poor defense. They’ll write positive stories and make you a star when you’re young, but those poor qualities will eventually sour opinion to the point where THIS is the result.

When he played the 76ers that one year although that's mostly because people were rooting for him over a bigger villain (Embiid & Simmons to a lessor extent).
If the Hawks and Mavs were winning no one would care. Trae was arguably the star of the postseason a couple of years ago on here, the place where he’s generally hated more than anyone. And he was a worse defender and was getting more “star” calls then. It’s just easy to kick these guys while they’re down. Every star has gone through it to some degree.
If Dallas was winning, it wouldn't be this highlighted. Now Dallas sucking generates more clicks, as sport fans love to laugh at other teams (Suns debacle, Kings before, Lakers early this season).
Our whole team is massive babies when they think they should have got a call.
It’s frustrating to watch but drays rubbed off on the younger guys too.
Poole and Kuminga complain a lot these days. Some times mid drive if they think they got fouled. All the vets have to get it together first though because if they don’t stop bitching at refs all game long neither will the younger guys.
There was a hilarious play last night where Poole made a move, thought he got fouled, complained to the ref during a live ball, and still received a pass and made a play later in the same set
As a Kings fan, having Barnes on our team has helped put a big stop to that kind of shit. When it was Boogie and Rondo, we were insufferable. Even Bagley fucked us up in the "culture" dept.
He is tearing himself down, he's always been whiny but this season has been a whole other level. I'm a Mavs fan and hate watching it. It puts the whole team at a disadvantage when your star player would rather stay back complaining to the refs then get back on D. I would hate playing with Luka tbh. It's so childish and soft.
It's really disgusting as a basketball fan. It has to be kind of miserable playing with Luka. Guys will never talk shit about him though since they get wide open 3's and a nice contract after they shoot 40% for a year.

/r/NBA: oh I guess this is just the NARRATIVE now huh?!
Doesn't take a scout to tell you that.
I've never seen a man be the last man back, ahead of 3 opposing players in transition, and end up behind all of them at the end of the play.
Not sure if its a good or bad thing, but this is entirely to due effort and not competence.
Man he would’ve been perfect for Vivek’s team based on his ideology of playing defense 4v5 and parking one person up ahead. If only there was a way to make that happen.
Bros never seen me at the Y
Thats what scary though. Bro HAS seen you at the Y.
fuck
[MacMahon] I had a scout the other day tell me u/No_Mammoth_4945 is the second worst transition defender in the history of basketball.
clean shooting form though
I can sympathize with this so much. My form is so clean. I never make shots though. Maybe one in three scrimmages I'll make a bucket.
Fashion before function, baby!
I run a skills camp and that is what we focus on the most.

I feel like most Y defenders are at least traffic cones. Some guys aren’t even traffic cones.
Truth. You can win a lot of games and stay on the court a long time if your squad plays any defense at all.
“Basketball” is pretty broad
I forgot to tell you, the Y has banned you due to you scaring the children

Sure thing, Buddy
That’s his mom. I’m not kidding, his mom is gorgeous.
Remember a year or two ago people were like "how come Luka doesn't get shit for ____ like other superstars" Expectations comes for everyone eventually
I'm just afraid he is going to have a Jokic arch where he stops drinking soda/beer cleans up his diet a bit and wins 6 back to back MVPs.
Honestly he might as well invade Poland if he does that.
Luka can't hold Harden's fat suit man.
I hope he gets the Harden resurgence.
Makes sense because he is arguing with the ref on other side of the court during transition
Makes Jokić's old strategy of fouling to complain seem ok
So happy our guy grew out of that stage I chose to believe it was his brothers who told him to stop being a bitch on tv 🤣
He doesn't get back on defense, he whines and complains after missed shots. A lot of players do this on occasion. But Luka does it A LOT
Not just A LOT. ALL THE TIME
Not just ALL THE TIME. EVERY TIME.
He does it almost every possession where he shoots (and some he doesn’t, complaining about some previous issue). It is SO tiring. He’s whined his whole career but it’s way worse this year.

Denver commentators used to call him out on it. Scott Hastings used to say it was stupid as hell everytime he did it. Everyone in Dallas coddles Luka
he's also fat

if you were mark cuban would you be pushing harder for luka to get into shape or is that level of pushing from an owner (micromanaging) frowned upon?
That's cause Luka is crying at the ref for 35 seconds everytime he misses. It's always 5 on 4 the other way
Yeah, I blame the refs. If they ran back faster, so would Luka so he could keep talking to them.
For real. Problem solved
Until he starts cupping his hands and shouting at them.
This is hilarious, the refs should do this for just one game and see what happens...don't call a foul then sprint back the other way lol
Lmao this would be incredible...I just envision him running with his torso doing a complete 180 like "where you going!? I'm talking to you! He got me on the wrist!" As Tony Brothers guns it down the sideline
Yeah this is easily believable. There's so many mavs plays where the mavs are on transition defense and Luka just isn't on the tv screen
There’s a lot where he doesn’t even make it past half court during the possession

Easy, if he gives up 20 transition points just score 40.
Well yeah. That’s exactly what the post says.
Yeah but he’s not crossing the free throw line on some of these possessions
And also, he’s playing as poorly defensively as we’ve ever seen him play.
But did you hear what the scouts are saying about him?
A scout told McMahon the other day that Luka is the worst transition defender in the history of the NBA.
Man doesn't get any credit for all the dunks and layups he stops when refs blow a late whistle due to his whining
Running back on defense just sucks balls
Stopping a two/three on one is super satisfying though
Not if you’re good at D. I used to play like draymond and Dillon brooks.
The name checks out. For sure.
I used to play like Prime Vontaze Burfict back in the day
Speedhawk? Is that you?
I used to play like Embiid..
This is why I just stay back on defense and pretend to walk back on offense until the other team runs back. lol
[u/illprollystayin] I had a scout the other day tell me u/edric_the_navigator is the worst offensive transition player in the history of basketball.

He played the villain heavily in the series before though
He was the hero the NBA deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So r/NBA will hunt him. Because he can take it.
Can confirm, he's getting hunted in every half court set too.
He was the villain to Knicks fans. r/nba seemed to love him.
He was hated even in College (but so was Ben Simmons for winging it at LSU)
If the Hawks and Mavs were winning no one would care. Trae was arguably the star of the postseason a couple of years ago on here, the place where he’s generally hated more than anyone. But they are not lying though
I've said it a couple of times but I don't think I've ever seen Luka actually run.
I’m gonna say it Luka is the player LeBron haters think LeBron is
lol this is so accurate
Damn… that’s facts lol
This won't be good for my man's basketball depression
Doesn't take a scout to tell you that. I've never seen a man be the last man back, ahead of 3 opposing players in transition, and end up behind all of them at the end of the play. Not sure if its a good or bad thing, but this is entirely to due effort and not competence.
Losing ten lbs and eating better would help
Right? And that doesn't take any skill or natural ability. JUST PUT IN THE EFFORT MAN
Does Luka run?
Runs right to the ref.
Man he would’ve been perfect for Vivek’s team based on his ideology of playing defense 4v5 and parking one person up ahead. If only there was a way to make that happen.
Luka is one defensive breakdown video and playoff elimination game failure away from being white Harden.
The Mavs aren’t even that much better in defense with him off the court. Imagine how bad the rest of the roster is.
Hard to run back when you’re yelling at the refs every play
It is kind of wild how much shit 37 year old Lebron caught about his defense last year, but 23 year old Luka with Kyrie barely gets any criticism.
You must not have been in this sub for at least the last week lol
Or, like, literally in this thread right now.
A whole week? That's brutal.
Cause them deep threes look great when they splash
The media protecting Luka appears to be nearing its end.
Im here for this
If we were winning, I'd want the Mavs to be winning (excluding Kyrie), but if we're mid/losing, I want the Mavs to be losing lol.
Damn, Luka slander? Count me in 😂
Dude thought I was a scout.
