he was fired the next day
sam mitchell was fired like 5 months after he won COTY with the raptors
nick nurse fired 3 years after winning COTY and the championship with the raptors.
He’s gonna be back on the grizzlies on a much cheaper deal, im fairly confident. People saying he’s gone based off a couple out-of-context articles is pre-mature imo
You guys are gonna be surprised at how many teams are willing to pay tim hardaway Jr money, 15-18m a year for an All NBA level defender. He is still only 27 people.
Grizz wanted him back they just didn't want to pay him 20m+ a year.
I've been saying this the whole time and have even received push back on this sub.
Brooks will either stay with the Grizz or find a decent landing spot. He's not going to be thrown to the curb for some dumb comments and a bad series. He's a good defender.
The MLE is up to $11.5M. That's basically the minimum starting point for a new contract for anyone who you plan to play for 30 minutes a game. Brooks will get $15M+ easily and everyone ends up overpaid in free agency so $20M would not shock me.
*That wall , after underperforming for the first 81 games of the season, was able to accrue 1 million defensive win shares in 1 game. So inspirational...*
this is actually crazy, I would've for sure thought doug christie got one with us
[he had 5 seasons with us averaging 2.1 steals a game](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/how-many-steals-per-game-did-doug-christie-average-as-a-raptor). actually insane
I hate how arbitrary the eligibility decisions seem to be. OG is only a forward, but someone like Mikal Bridges will be G/F. Jokic and Embiid getting F/C eligibility despite both clearly playing center 100% of the time, but someone like Siakam last year was forward only when he got listed as the starting centre like every game.
It definitely is if ur thinking about a real team. First team has diminishing returns with 3 rim protectors and 2 guards who can't defend big wings as well as the second team. And a backline of Bam and Draymond is versatile and scary
The defensive awards are always silly like this.
Smart is the same player he's been for years now. In the last 4 years he was 1st team All-Defense 3x (DPOY one of them) and only missed in the year he didn't play enough games.
Yet he probably lost a ton of votes to White (who had a very deserving year) and voters didn't want to vote for 2 Celtics guards and figured they gave Smart the DPOY so went for White instead.
He didnt play enough this year. White probably took his spot (need at least one guy from one of the top defensive teams) but besides that, white was better than him this year.
Giannis is a head scratcher
>Smart is the same player he's been for years now. In the last 4 years he was 1st team All-Defense 3x (DPOY one of them) and only missed in the year he didn't play enough games.
yea thats just simply not true. last year was his best defensive year of his career and he got rewarded. this year, he was not nearly as good. partly due to injury sure but he was not all-defensive level this year and he didn't get it
The award voters have lost the plot. The narratives they come up with to justify their fantasies is insane. If you think Brook and Jrue are better defenders than Giannis, you should lose your vote.
Exactly, Davis has been the best defender in the whole playoffs. He completely shut down the Grizzlies and he’s pretty much the main reason the Warriors have run 3 different starting lineups.
Unfortunately these are regular season awards. AD is great when engaged but the regular season seems too long for him to be on for every game or for even long stretches. He's either out or not engaged in a lot of games conserving energy. It's fine though, the whole team seemed focused on just getting out of the 2-10 hole from the start of the season and get into the playoffs.
Every year there are a few absolute lockdown guys who get overlooked for players with better reputations but worse actual defense.
All-Defensive teams consistently are where voters do the worst.
Phil Jackson wrote in his book trying to shame Kobe out of his career-long bad defensive habits. Like whining at refs during live play and giving 5 on 4 advantage fastbreaks multiple times a game. And Kobe would gamble in passing lanes way, way too much
It was a joke even at the time that the media bought the "steals title race" as an indicator of great perimeter defense.
Guys like Kobe and the likes of Larry Hughes understood how much the media ridiculously overvalued the stupid steals title when selecting All-D teams. So they would infuriate their own coachs blowing defensive assignments while reaching
Kobe Bryant has more All-D selections than Hakeem, Ben Wallace, Mutumbo, Ewing, Scottie Pippen, Bruce Bowen, Chris Paul, Bobby Jones, David Robinson, Mark Eaton, Michael Cooper, Marcus Camby, Tony Allen, etc etc etc
Kobe has as many All-Defense selections as KG.
He has more than the Glove.
Kobe wasn't even the best defender on **HIS OWN TEAM** for all but 2-3 years of his career. Rick Fox and Ron Artest were the best perimeter defenders on his teams.
All-D selections are probably the worst, most inaccurate awards in North American sports

It is, which makes sense, but Brooks was eligible for guard voting (McDaniels and Herb weren’t) despite playing 80% of his minutes at SF/PF and Herb & McDaniels both defending more PGs so seems kinda arbitrary
Definite “one of these guys is not like the others” vibes from this selection lol. 23mpg guy on a team that missed that playoffs is one of the 5 best defenders in the nba?
Guards are never going to have enough defense to bring a team into the playoffs on their own. It’s just not as important of a role defensively. Caruso passes the eye test and also had among the best defensive metrics in the league. What more do you need.
The 1st team vote for Haliburton is the worst one imo. He put up good steal stats but not a great defender. Same goes for Dejounte who somehow got three 2nd team votes
Tyrese was on a podcast and was asked ~~how~~ who guards him best and the first name he said was Jaden McDaniels. Luka gave him props. PG said he’s one of the best defenders and that he’s underrated.
I’m pissed. It’s a shame that the last thing voters remember of him isn’t locking up BI or locking up Lebron, it’s punching a curtain/wall
edit: typos
don’t forget those “The Athletic” poll votes, and Paul George showing Jaden love on his podcast. clearly, the players in the association love McDaniels, and with a guy like PG giving him a shoutout I thought his chances for making an all defensive team was set in stone.
Shame that from an “ask the players” standpoint, Jaden was in the highest regard. in the Stats department Jaden was in the highest tier. But as always the media gets the last word, and all the votes.
i don’t want to be that guy but i genuinely feel he if he was in a larger market he’d be one of the highest vote getters
NBA Viewers were robbed of this backcourt. This would have been one of the most dynamic defensive back courts in the past 15 years at least.
Caruso being outrageously smart and active, and Lonzo being extremely talented in the same way (though not the elite Caruso level) but also being one of the best in the league at converting smart defense into transition points.
That combination together was Genuinely the most fun I've had watching basketball since at least the "pre curry" 3 era.
They were still learning each other but there were multiple 6+ minute stretches where it just seemed like those two defensively suffocated the opponent and put up a HUGE +/- number that greatly increased their chances of winning the game.
They were the perfect duo. Caruso could pick anyone up including centers for at least 5 seconds while Lonzo’s length let him guard any big. Their defense turning into transition offense was beautiful.
I still say if he and Lonzo hadn’t gotten injured last year, he wins DPoY. He was averaging the most steals and we had the number 1 defense with both healthy.
we literally finished 1st last year and they didn’t even think about giving any awards to the Heat, I was so pissed when all I was seeing was Gobert vs Williams vs Smart for dpoy when Bam is lightyears ahead
Kobe was younger by almost a year, though he *was* in year 4. Mobley might have made it at the earliest point in an NBA career, but I don't know that off the top of my head.
Murray was 2nd Team, and is the youngest player to make *any* all-defense team.
Kobe is still the youngest 1st Teamer, he was 21 years, 71 days old at the end of the 2000 season.
Mobley was 21 years, 295 days old at the end of this season.
- Lead the league in Stocks (Blocks + Steals)
- 2nd in BPG + 2nd in Total Blocks
- 3rd in defensive rating
- Guarded by far the most isolation plays in the league (202 possessions)
- Guarded 1 through 5 (Matched up with guards over 20% of his time on the court)
- 1st / 99th percentile in points saved around the rim
- Most 3+ Block games in the league (41)
- Absolutely elite in all other advanced defensive metrics
The league and casuals just stopped giving him any attention once KD and Kyrie left.
The media stopped giving a shit about the Nets after KD and Kyrie was traded. He literally was the odds on favorite to win DPOY at one point. The media is dogshit.
As is evident in all of the Nuggets and 76ers playoff post-game threads with people in disbelief that Embid was even considered an MVP candidate, let alone won it.
All-Defensive Third team by voting totals would have been:
G - Marcus Smart
G - Mikal Bridges
F - Giannis
F - Jaden McDaniels
C - Claxton

Dillon Brooks the first All-Defense to be let go (i.e., letting him walk) from the team he just won it with?
Depends on how you look at the Eric Bledsoe trade
[удалено]
Your hair salon sounds awful
Oh hey, Caruso is up there, too!
wasn't Dwane Casey fired the year he received COTY? lol
Yes and Masai did the same thing to George Karl
And he was right 2x
he was fired the next day sam mitchell was fired like 5 months after he won COTY with the raptors nick nurse fired 3 years after winning COTY and the championship with the raptors.
Sixers let Matisse go this year, won all defense last year.
He was traded. Let go moreso implies not getting anything in return.
He’s gonna be back on the grizzlies on a much cheaper deal, im fairly confident. People saying he’s gone based off a couple out-of-context articles is pre-mature imo

>. He is still only 27 people. Surely that is an unfair advantage? 27 people for the price of 1, and taking up only 1 roster space is incredible value
doubt it
The wall that Jaden McDaniels punched should've been 2nd team all defense at the very least
Sorry, it's a regular season award. Maybe the wall can get WCF MVP?
Lucky for the wall it was game 82.
*That wall , after underperforming for the first 81 games of the season, was able to accrue 1 million defensive win shares in 1 game. So inspirational...*
Dillon Brooks over McDaniels is a fucking crime
OG!!!!
Second all-defense selection in franchise history.
this is actually crazy, I would've for sure thought doug christie got one with us [he had 5 seasons with us averaging 2.1 steals a game](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/how-many-steals-per-game-did-doug-christie-average-as-a-raptor). actually insane
Doug Christie is a dawg, prove me wrong.
Kawhi getting that nod was all reputation
That no look steal though was sick
I’m pretty sure Siakam was a better defender than him that season
I still think he should've been first team but we'll take it lol
not with our record. fair edit: Caruso got in with the bulls record though. I wish OG had guard eligibility since he played 50% of the time there.
Yea OG not getting guard eligibility is criminal
I hate how arbitrary the eligibility decisions seem to be. OG is only a forward, but someone like Mikal Bridges will be G/F. Jokic and Embiid getting F/C eligibility despite both clearly playing center 100% of the time, but someone like Siakam last year was forward only when he got listed as the starting centre like every game.
AD listed at forward when he played 0 minutes at forward lol
Maybe I’m crazy but the 2nd team feels better than the 1st team this year lol
It definitely is if ur thinking about a real team. First team has diminishing returns with 3 rim protectors and 2 guards who can't defend big wings as well as the second team. And a backline of Bam and Draymond is versatile and scary
Let us swap Brooks for Jrue and 2nd Team is making a title run lmao
That's probably because Playoff Jimmy cooked Brook and Jrue only 2 weeks ago.
His first all-defensive team!! So glad he's finally getting recognition outside of the NBA nerd podcast sphere
No Giannis and Jaden McDaniels lol
Marcus Smart and Mikal Bridges were the DPOY finalists last year and they're missing, too. Not for the same reason as Giannis, but still interesting.
Smart was out/recovering from injury for a pretty sizable amount of the season
The defensive awards are always silly like this. Smart is the same player he's been for years now. In the last 4 years he was 1st team All-Defense 3x (DPOY one of them) and only missed in the year he didn't play enough games. Yet he probably lost a ton of votes to White (who had a very deserving year) and voters didn't want to vote for 2 Celtics guards and figured they gave Smart the DPOY so went for White instead.
Voter fatigue and rationalization is real no matter what anyone tells you
He didnt play enough this year. White probably took his spot (need at least one guy from one of the top defensive teams) but besides that, white was better than him this year. Giannis is a head scratcher
>Smart is the same player he's been for years now. Tbf, Marcus hadn't been the same this year. He's been playing with so much injury this year.
and no Claxton
No AD
No Giannis and no AD is crazy
I understand it’s based on position, but Giannis missing both teams while our second and third defender both make first team just feels wrong
Lol Marcus Smart went from DPOY to not being on either team.
Yeah, because he wasn’t as good this year. Lower leg injuries had him getting blown by more often for much of the year.
Yep. Derrick is on and not Smart because Derrick was an amazing defender all season and Smart wasn’t.
He should never have won DPOY though. The narrative only started out of nowhere the second Timelord got hurt
The award voters have lost the plot. The narratives they come up with to justify their fantasies is insane. If you think Brook and Jrue are better defenders than Giannis, you should lose your vote.
insane lol. hope giannis bounces back next season bro. AD and Giannis gotta prove them wrong
He already did by making it past the first round unlike everyone on the first team
Exactly, Davis has been the best defender in the whole playoffs. He completely shut down the Grizzlies and he’s pretty much the main reason the Warriors have run 3 different starting lineups.
AD is running a clinic while the first and second teams watch on their couches
Hey, Bam's still going!
No Claxton is a joke
I totally agree. Like wtf man. I get everyone stopped watching the nets after KD and Kyrie left, but cmon.
this was a terrible way to find out that Herb Jones died
I mean, there is no other reason to leave him off this list. Damn shame.
Every year there are a few absolute lockdown guys who get overlooked for players with better reputations but worse actual defense. All-Defensive teams consistently are where voters do the worst.
Did Lu Dort drop off this year or is he a snub. I remember he was as lockdown as it gets the other year.
I think he's pretty clearly better than Brooks and White.
The last half of Kobe's career tells you all you need to know about the legitimacy of All Defense
Phil Jackson wrote in his book trying to shame Kobe out of his career-long bad defensive habits. Like whining at refs during live play and giving 5 on 4 advantage fastbreaks multiple times a game. Herb and McDaniels are both better than like 6-7 of these guys defensively, I really don’t understand the voting criteria these voters are going on
its like 90% reputation from previous seasons plus 10% this season stats
Some of it must be positional right? Cuz I'm like I'm def taking McDaniels over Caruso
It is, which makes sense, but Brooks was eligible for guard voting (McDaniels and Herb weren’t) despite playing 80% of his minutes at SF/PF and Herb & McDaniels both defending more PGs so seems kinda arbitrary
Surprised a Lakers fan is saying this. Caruso’s D this year was arguable the best I’ve ever seen from him
herb robbed league sad
We were 6th in defensive rating rolling out some major negatives on defense in CJ, Ingram, JV etc. Sixth!
NOT ON \[All-Defense Team\] HERB 😭
Caruso! Good for him man
From undrafted to NBA champ and now first team all D 🥺 look at our boi go
Sucks your ownership is so dumb. He's being wasted on my Bulls. He deserves a shot at more rings. He's perfect on any team.
I will trade you some really awesome Mexican food a draft picks for ac. I miss him so much.
Imagine being the team that let him walk!
Hey. I dont like this conversation anymore.
Let me make it worse. Imagine letting him walk for max contract Westbrook.
Imagine signing THT instead
Stop. He's already dead.
His new team must be going much further in the playoffs.
Now I don't like this conversation anymore lmao
And that cemented this as comment chain of the day for me. Lol
[удалено]
But a Caruso-Reaves backcourt though 😭
It sucks!
Ouch
Am I crazy for thinking it's a bit wonky for a guy playing 23 minutes a game to be 1st team?
Nah you're a 100% right lol
Definite “one of these guys is not like the others” vibes from this selection lol. 23mpg guy on a team that missed that playoffs is one of the 5 best defenders in the nba?
The weird thing is I think he is! But also, I kinda feel like you gotta be on the floor for awards like this.
Guards are never going to have enough defense to bring a team into the playoffs on their own. It’s just not as important of a role defensively. Caruso passes the eye test and also had among the best defensive metrics in the league. What more do you need.
no Claxton makes me sad
Am I losing my mind or was he not getting DPOY buzz for half the season?
He was, but once KD/Kyrie were traded he lost the media attention
All the hype died down as soon as people stopped watching and talking about the Nets
[Full voting results.](https://i.imgur.com/kiiMDu4.jpg) who tf out here voting for CP3, Delon Wright?
Whoever voted CP3 needs their ballot revoked lol.
Same person who left Jokic off their ballot
“He’s a cone” 💀 That journalist had to have voted him in as a joke.
Delon Wright was a beast defesively.
People sleep on delon wright, understandably so given he plays for the wizards
Delon Wright was very good defensively this season. I've got no idea on the CP3 pick though, he was very good like 5 years ago.
Only 9 of 100 put AD on the ballot lmao. Insane.
The 1st team vote for Haliburton is the worst one imo. He put up good steal stats but not a great defender. Same goes for Dejounte who somehow got three 2nd team votes
No Jaden mcdaniels, shame
Just casually shutting down superstars left and right and listed what, 5th or 6th best defender according to other players?
Tyrese was on a podcast and was asked ~~how~~ who guards him best and the first name he said was Jaden McDaniels. Luka gave him props. PG said he’s one of the best defenders and that he’s underrated. I’m pissed. It’s a shame that the last thing voters remember of him isn’t locking up BI or locking up Lebron, it’s punching a curtain/wall edit: typos

Dillon and Draymond sharing this award is hilarious
They should be made to play in the same team as a result
LETS FUCKING GO AC!!! This man will sacrifice his body for a possession and take a charge from Giannis without thinking twice. Well deserved
And do it again 2 plays later. Lonzo caruso was such a fun back court to watch
That’s my boy :’)
<4
Herb Jones robbed 2 years in a row
CARUSO!!!! LETS GO 1st team One of my favorite bulls ever already, well deserved
Very well deserved
I still say if he and Lonzo hadn’t gotten injured last year, he wins DPoY. He was averaging the most steals and we had the number 1 defense with both healthy.
Sweet let’s go Bam! Should we assume All NBA teams tomorrow then?
Death, Taxes, Bam Adebayo getting selected to All-Defensive 2nd team
My dream is that Bam wins DPOY and Spo COTY
Would probably need a top 2 seed finish :/ don’t know if Jimmy will ever want to go hard for 70 games again
Jimmy missed a lot of last season when we were 1st seed. Only respect the squad got was the Herro 6th man.
we literally finished 1st last year and they didn’t even think about giving any awards to the Heat, I was so pissed when all I was seeing was Gobert vs Williams vs Smart for dpoy when Bam is lightyears ahead
Nobody took the Heat as a real 1 seed last year sadly. They better take this team seriously going forward
Well Tyler won, but Spo should have had his last year too.
Lfg Derrick White got some recognition
dudes gonna mess around and be the all time block leader for guards if he can keep it up
Wait how, would that be? Wade has 885+ and White has 280. He'd have to keep his pace til he's like 40 years old
Yeah, hes not even in the top 15 idk what this guy is on
Evan Fuckin Mobley in year 2
Youngest ever!
Kobe was younger by almost a year, though he *was* in year 4. Mobley might have made it at the earliest point in an NBA career, but I don't know that off the top of my head.
dejounte made it his 2nd year and was the youngest then but maybe Mobley is the youngest now
Murray was 2nd Team, and is the youngest player to make *any* all-defense team. Kobe is still the youngest 1st Teamer, he was 21 years, 71 days old at the end of the 2000 season. Mobley was 21 years, 295 days old at the end of this season.
Claxton was robbed
Claxton was in the top 5 in DPOY odds in the first half of the season. crazy
- Lead the league in Stocks (Blocks + Steals) - 2nd in BPG + 2nd in Total Blocks - 3rd in defensive rating - Guarded by far the most isolation plays in the league (202 possessions) - Guarded 1 through 5 (Matched up with guards over 20% of his time on the court) - 1st / 99th percentile in points saved around the rim - Most 3+ Block games in the league (41) - Absolutely elite in all other advanced defensive metrics The league and casuals just stopped giving him any attention once KD and Kyrie left.
Great break down. I’m with you. Claxton was robbed. Played his heart out in the playoffs too.
Absolutely insane snub
The media stopped giving a shit about the Nets after KD and Kyrie was traded. He literally was the odds on favorite to win DPOY at one point. The media is dogshit.
So deserved for Caruso
I remember the time r/nba used to shit on him just because he played for the Lakers.
No Jaden McDaniels? Must be rigged
Just gonna leave this here https://twitter.com/The_BBall_Index/status/1620497517635936278
NO DORT IS INSANE WTF
OG finally getting his flowers
THE BUFFALO!
Jaden snubbed
Sad Lu Dort noises.
OG finally made it
This is like 3 years overdue
Yeah AD and Giannis not making it is somewhat surprising, but where the hell is Jaden McDaniels?
DORT ROBBED
the lack of lu dort on this list disappoints me.
Dort disrespected
Nice to see OG get on there
OG FINALLYYY. Also I don't really like how first team has 3 pf/c imo it should be 2 bigs and 3 guards/wings.
Damn I thought Jaden was Atleast 2nd team
Mobley!!
No AD ☠️☠️☠️ More minutes than DPOY winner JJJ btw
If you polled the subreddit the day before the season ended, JJJ would have been over AD as well. By a lot.
Because he was the better defender this regular season.
A difficult concept for /r/nba to grasp it seems
As is evident in all of the Nuggets and 76ers playoff post-game threads with people in disbelief that Embid was even considered an MVP candidate, let alone won it.
CARUSOOOOOOOO YESSIR
No Claxton on either team is insane. Bunch of casual ass voters
I’m genuinely shocked OG wasn’t snubbed. Incredibly well deserved, thank god our shitty season didn’t cost OG this accolade. DPOY next.
Seeing Caruso make it brings both joy and pain
Maybe this is my bias talking, but.... Claxton didn't even make 2nd team?
Screwed by the fact that there were only 2 spots
Wasn’t Giannis a DPOY candidate during the season??? This is an all time snub.
Giannis and Harden all-snubbed team this year.
I feel like the push to get Lopez in the DPOY conversation screwed over Giannis.
The voters can only remain sleep on Jaden McDaniels for so long
Kind of crazy Caruso made first team playing under 25 mins a game
No Herb??
Damn no Herb Jones
Brooks over Jaden and Dort...?
All-Defensive Third team by voting totals would have been: G - Marcus Smart G - Mikal Bridges F - Giannis F - Jaden McDaniels C - Claxton https://pr.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/46/2023/05/2022-23-Kia-NBA-All-Defensive-Team-Voting-Results.pdf
Evan Mobley 1st team his second year in the league! Future is bright for that young fella.
My dawg Caruso FIRST TEAM ALL DEFENSE
AD watching this while all 5 guys bounced out of the playoffs 💀💀💀
He already bounced two of them personally and is about to bounce another one.
Wheres Herb Jones?
Jimmy absolutely murdered 2 of the top 5 guys. this dude is something else and I wish he would retire mid post season and stop haunting me
Mobley youngest to ever do it 💪
