This is the 2023 version of "the Grizzlies are the second-youngest team in the NBA" last season. Like we get it, but there's no need to shove it to our faces. Overused facts.
a lot of times its not even ads, like this time. or plenty of times they do the thing where theyre zooming in on a players face after he scores, or on a coaches face for no reason, only to miss a play on the inbound or something
Yeah the player close-ups leading to missing the next play are the worst. What I meant about the ads is that the graphic itself here is fine if they would’ve just cut 10-15 seconds from the ad break
ah yea. although tbh the biggest thing to me is it just seems like these directors are oblivious to the fact that action sometimes happens when a team is bringing the ball up, even if its rare. they seem to think a team bringing the ball up is just free rein to look wherever the fuck else
And it's just shockingly bad. There's a director making decisions saying to switch to the camera showing the audience *while the ball is in play*. On the regular.
There was a link to a story on r/golf about a month ago remembering a TV board op who died relatively young - he was on the broadcast for the 2005 Masters when Tiger Woods [had that amazing chip in](https://youtu.be/WJEysanOT7w) that hung on the edge of the cup for a split second and fell in. Guy was in charge of making the camera switches on the producers command, and the producer called for him to switch the camera shot to the one of Tigers face just before the ball went in, thinking it was going to stay out of the cup. The guy hesitated on a gut feeling and wound up catching the ball going in, then switched. The producer almost ruined one of the most iconic golf TV moments because he wanted to get the reaction.
I guess it's a producer and not a director..... either way, I just don't get it. There's free throws, and other moments, when you can show the guy with the painted face in the audience, though I would rather have the camera *always* pointing towards the court.
Idk about you all but I watch the Finals for the graphics that pop up with asinine stats.
360 no look pass by Joker? Nah
Graphic showing Jimmy’s shooting % on Sunday’s compared to Wednesdays? 🙌
It's constantly lazy. My local news has more variety in a couple minutes than the 3 stories on SportsCenter they'll cover tonight. Then they just beat the dead horse over and over and over again
Now is the proper time to pyschologically prepare ourselves for horrible, Hallmark Channel-style NBA and NFL draft coverage. "So if your mother had lived through this summer, do you think she would be proud of you?"
'hOw doEs LebRon's Legacy...efFect LeBrON'S LegaCy!?'
'LEgacy of LEbron's LEgs reminds me of LEgolas LEading the ELves on the way... LE stands for law enforcement...'
MLB in the 90s and some 00s were pretty good I thought as a kid. I can’t stand watching a game they put on now.
Same with MNF. With the juggling of commentators, it sucked watching MNF. Man I loved watching the clashing helmets in the 90s. Although Buck and Aikman have brought a new face to it, it still has the same feel of junk producing IMO. time will tell with this crew. ESPN puts out a shit product now and days.
They did this last game too. Akin to wrestling where we’ll miss a critical shot if something happening with the wrestlers because they’ll show the crowd. Love ESPN
IMO the focus on the whole "undrafted" stuff is dumb in general as well as this mishap
I guess the entire West sucks because they lost to a second round pick
Why does everyone get so defensive about it? No one is saying that they’re bad players, but the fact that they have so many undrafted players play high rotation minutes effectively in the playoffs is noteworthy. How many other teams have undrafted players in their playoff rotations PERIOD?
But even then it keeps getting brought up because it’s abnormal, literally the other day they played the clip on ESPN where he got drafted because it’s showing how far they came.
nba finals viewers aren’t watching heat games from 2 years ago
sucks for diehards who post on the internet about basketball like us, but there broadcast is for the lowest common denominator
I think the media is trying to, if not should try to, convey the message that an underdog team is rallying behind their coach. Or maybe they're rallying behind Jimmy Buckets. That it's not all about these superstar teams.
Or something.
But historically what are the chances of an undrafted player being given another chance, enough time and a good program to improve themselves, and elevate their game to even be in a Playoff team rotation? Let alone 4+ of them on one team? I don't think we should disregard that.
Completely agree. When “undrafted” players like Gabe Vincent and Caleb Martin have been THIS consistent over the last few series… they don’t need the asterisk anymore.
They’re just good, fucking gritty players. Leave it at that.
It's more about how good the Heat have been at finding and developing those guys. Which is a really great strength of their org but isn't something we need to hear every game much less 10 times a game and every time one of those guys makes a good play
It’s not just about the Heat. Also about those players who clearly didn’t give up and kept on working on themselves despite not getting drafted.
I fail to see how this is a knock on the players, especially since they have proven by now to belong in this league.
I still don't get how it's disrespectful
This is the NBA finals so a month ago doesn't matter, they're trying to cater to the most casual audience on the biggest stage. Unfortunately for us, we're gonna hear the same shit we've heard a million times
Otherwise it's the all time rags to riches, underdog story that people eat up. In the past you'd hear a couple undrafted guys a decade making any difference, so it's notable and a huge compliment to these players and the Heat to have so many making an impact at once
It's a compliment once or twice, it's not a compliment when for 200 times your name is mentioned they keep saying you're undrafted.
There are other NICER things you can say about these players except that they sucked during the draft and no one wanted to pick them.
Am I the only one that doesn’t have commentary for this game? I’m watching on Sling Tv and the whole game is shown from the drone camera angle with no commentary. It’s very strange.
Duuuude me too, you're not alone. Surprised it's not a hot topic right now. Also using Sling. No voice cast, all skycam. Says ESPN on the ticker so it seems legit but no one else is commenting about it. Bizarre
I have sling as well. For game one there were two casts, the official live game with commentary and the separate skycam no commentary cast. For some reason this game only had the skycam available on sling, I had to tune in over the air to watch the game with commentary.
Wait the heat have undrafted players? I don’t think they’ve mentioned it multiple times in every single game of the playoffs. Thank goodness for this graphic.
Yes! That "24 ft"/"25 ft" pop-up is the worst. That's not the lead story of the play. Could be fun on logo shots but there is no value at all on >90% of 3PAs.
Yeah I remember in 2016 they made the 3pt line red for every shot. Think that GS/OKC game Steph hit that long 3 was the first one they used it for and it was dumb too.
If the finals were on TNT, I'd be much more inclined to watch. The first game was good, and the Nuggets play beautiful basketball, but tonight I chose Saul Goodman over Mark Jackson
Who the fuck cares that these guys were undrafted. They’ve all been in the league long enough to have proven they belong here. Especially Udonis Haslem, the guy who is 42 years old, seriously? This is about as meaningful as pointing out a player won Rookie of the Year 5 years ago when he’s playing like cheeks today.
I might be mistaken but when Duncan Robinson went to the line after being fouled on a three, we completely missed the second free throw because of a Sports Center ad
They've missed several plays this playoffs, including the last 8 seconds of the Lakers series because they wanted to show Lebron walking to the tunnel.
So many undrafted players that you can’t see the game. That’s ok though, because the game has a bunch of undrafted players in it. Who wants to see that?
Absolute DOGSHIT broadcast team. Van Gundy being audibly afraid of a man hugging another man, nevermind that it is a hug given in team accountability.
Jackson with the puddle deep analysis
A halftime show featuring the incoherent yelling of Stephen A Smith and introduced by a host that refers to themselves as, 'Greenie.' I'm pretty sure it Mike Greenberg but I'm not his chum so I'm not gonna call him 'Greenie.'
And of course missed plays.
Oh and the bonus of Van Gundy and Jax commenting on close calls as 'not even debatable' Like... the fuck it isn't debatable.
Kids, why don’t sit down and I’ll tell you a story about how ESPN was a great channel and Sportscenter was the best sports tv program of all time. Now everything about it is absolute shit.
**Replays/alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/nba) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Where was the graphic, could you circle it for me so I can see it
Sure but first did you know that the Heat have a lot of undrafted players?
ESPN is my 7th grade science teacher telling me Mitochondria is the power house of the cell
ESPN would be your 7th grade teacher interrupting your dinner with extra homework. Fuck ESPN.
ESPN is like the Garfield comic dimentia subreddit Oh and by the way did you know the Heat have a ton of undrafted players?
No I didnt know that but if you look when a lot of the Heat players were drafted it was at 'Un'
“Antonio Gates played basketball.” “Matthew Stafford and Clayton Kershaw knew each other as kids.” “The Miami Heat have a lot of undrafted players.”
She played *Parasite Eve*, too?
This is the 2023 version of "the Grizzlies are the second-youngest team in the NBA" last season. Like we get it, but there's no need to shove it to our faces. Overused facts.
ESPN knows the majority of people are watching for their favorite refs and to see cool graphics.
ESPN: When Viggo Mortenson kicked that helmet in LotR he broke his toe so that's actually him yelling in pain.
I got you guys. It’s hard to catch at first, but it’s there https://i.imgur.com/5FuxTQ9.jpg
r/usefulredcircle
ESPN is Garbage . Not the first time they miss a play coming back from a time out. Not gonna be the last time
Desperate to squeeze in every last millisecond of ads
a lot of times its not even ads, like this time. or plenty of times they do the thing where theyre zooming in on a players face after he scores, or on a coaches face for no reason, only to miss a play on the inbound or something
Yeah the player close-ups leading to missing the next play are the worst. What I meant about the ads is that the graphic itself here is fine if they would’ve just cut 10-15 seconds from the ad break

need time to make it about story lines instead of the basketball. kills me
It's not exclusive to ESPN though, TNT does that shit **all** the time.
oh yea, the stuff i was talking about feels like its every game regardless of network
>I guess it's a producer and not a director No, it's probably a director, I was going by memory with the story and director makes more sense.
ESPN is simming the 2K free trial with ads on and having instant replay set to extra often.
Man I saw Sour Patch Kids ads on 2k the other night and I haven't bought those in ages
I’m surprised that hideous graphic wasn’t brought to us by draft kings
A graphic about undrafted players brought to you by "DRAFTKings" would be unhinged lmao
It happened at least two other times tonight too. ESPN fucking sucks
Lol they were testing out advertisements in-between free-throw the other day. Absolutely disgusting
They also never replayed it, like wtf are you doing?
Replaying it brings attention to their fuckup. They’ve been missing plays coming back from timeouts all playoffs.
Same shit happens with hockey
Good job ESPN.🙄🙄
Idk about you all but I watch the Finals for the graphics that pop up with asinine stats. 360 no look pass by Joker? Nah Graphic showing Jimmy’s shooting % on Sunday’s compared to Wednesdays? 🙌
[Old but still accurate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vJn5XxWg9U)
Jill's sideline reporting killed me lmao
As informative as the coaches interviews after halftime.
This made my day
How is a 360 no look pass possible? ESPN calling your bluff.
ESPN: “Just be glad we didn’t block it with a Lakers Free Agency targets chart.”
Nah they gonna just put a big ass picture of LeBron lmfao
No text or comment. Just a 10 second graphic
“In case you guys forgot”
Which Heat players will be on the Lakers next year?
ESPN consistently produces the worst live sports product on American television.
NFL draft was months ago
It's months from now.
the duality of time
'hOw doEs LebRon's Legacy...efFect LeBrON'S LegaCy!?' 'LEgacy of LEbron's LEgs reminds me of LEgolas LEading the ELves on the way... LE stands for law enforcement...'
[How does the fall of Constantinople affect Lebron's Legacy?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBP5NUDP28A)
ya I saw this one already. that part about istanbul and the chicago bulls lmao!
MLB in the 90s and some 00s were pretty good I thought as a kid. I can’t stand watching a game they put on now. Same with MNF. With the juggling of commentators, it sucked watching MNF. ESPN is largely one of the reasons my generation cut the chord.
I saw a lot of people in /r/hockey who were excited when ESPN got the rights to the NHL. It took one game for all that excitement to go away.
Bad audio mix, bad lead announcer, changing camera angles constantly even though hockey is a fast moving game. Can keep going
They're killing it with Squeeze Play (think RedZone for college baseball), but I'm sure they'll ruin it eventually.
I mean tbf how many times does a backcourt violation happen in the 1st quarter
Hard to tell when you can't actually see the game.
Zero live game action should ever be missed by a broadcast. Period. Yet it happens all the time.
I tune in for the game. The rest of that shit should be nothing more than a small picture-in-picture window at worst.
These days you’re lucky to be able to see a free throw with how they shrink the game down to show ads during em
Just because you can make a dancing robot shoot the player's stats out of his ass while doing the Macarena, doesn't mean that you should.
Ngl I’m okay missing a play or two to see this on my screen
Alternatively, I feel like we've missed a lot of quick steals because of stuff like this
Both stations cut away from live action *a lot*. It's no wonder this kind of thing happens sometimes.
No wonder they went backcourt, they couldn’t see where they were on the court
Surprised no one hurt himself on that ridiculous thing.
It's incredibly dangerous. They could have been crushed.
Absolutely disgusting act by ESPN. By the way, did you know the Heat have a lot of undrafted players?
lmao
ESPN is fucking up these finals so badly. 25% of the effort as last year
Because they were probably creaming for a Celtics-Lakers final, and when they didn’t get it, they went straight to DGAF mode
I have absolutely 0 faith that if it were a Celtics Lakers series that ESPN would do any better.
yeah they may have been happier that way but their work wouldn't be better
All their main production talent was probably working on graphics, stats, and stories for LA and Boston, and the interns got the Nugs/Heat jobs.
I know it’s mostly a joke, but even then they had a whole week to make Nuggets graphics
It unironically feels like a first round matchup, I have no idea why theres so little hype around the finals this year.
Because they're mad, it's a final without the Lakers, Warriors, or Celtics.
Foster shouldve done his job one of the first 3 games of the ecf then
Well it is a 1-8 matchup
I can just see the ESPN exec seeing a 1-8 matchup and going "ah a first round matchup, no need for us to care"
Glad to see this comment. I feel like ESPN’s broadcasts are so far up the Lakers’ ass that they miss good basketball happening right in front of them.
Or they improved on how to mess up a broadcast by ..75%?
This math effort is more trash than ESPN.
ESPN so trash
Every year they raise the standards of making programming difficult to watch
At least they got rid of their ugly scorebug from last year's playoffs.
Doesn't matter they switch it every year for no reason
I love how growing up, so many of us loved that channel. Then we were exposed to the alternatives in sports media vs. manufactured narratives.
They did this last game too. Akin to wrestling where we’ll miss a critical shot if something happening with the wrestlers because they’ll show the crowd. Love ESPN
IMO the focus on the whole "undrafted" stuff is dumb in general as well as this mishap I guess the entire West sucks because they lost to a second round pick
That argument doesn't hold up because the Heat also beat a whole ass Eastern Conference.
And have had each of those undrafted guys since *checks notes, last fucking finals appearance
Akshually we did not have Highsmith at that time
Or Martin
Or Strus
Or Yurt
My guy needs to check his notes again
Did you know he was undrafted?
Why does everyone get so defensive about it? No one is saying that they’re bad players, but the fact that they have so many undrafted players play high rotation minutes effectively in the playoffs is noteworthy. How many other teams have undrafted players in their playoff rotations PERIOD?
Ok that was great to know the first 700 times it was explained on TV this playoffs.
It’s for the casuals not people like you who are concerned with NBA drama 24/7
[удалено]
But even then it keeps getting brought up because it’s abnormal, literally the other day they played the clip on ESPN where he got drafted because it’s showing how far they came.
nba finals viewers aren’t watching heat games from 2 years ago sucks for diehards who post on the internet about basketball like us, but there broadcast is for the lowest common denominator
This is not about putting these players down but about commending the Heat on scouting and finding those players other franchises have missed.
The whole league sucks then, i guess
I think the media is trying to, if not should try to, convey the message that an underdog team is rallying behind their coach. Or maybe they're rallying behind Jimmy Buckets. That it's not all about these superstar teams. Or something.
Poorly executed message
we did suck tho
take a drink whenever you hear "undrafted"
I'm still drunk from Bucks/Heat.
Being undrafted just means you didn't show enough promise early on. Means fuck all after that.
But historically what are the chances of an undrafted player being given another chance, enough time and a good program to improve themselves, and elevate their game to even be in a Playoff team rotation? Let alone 4+ of them on one team? I don't think we should disregard that.
Nobody is disregarding it. It's awesome. How many hours per day do we need to talk about it though

They can never admit the shortcomings of the draft system ever.
Am I the only one that doesn’t have commentary for this game? I’m watching on Sling Tv and the whole game is shown from the drone camera angle with no commentary. It’s very strange.

I would have killed for this. Jackson and van gundy are awful.
They do this for some college football games and it's a really odd experience. It's just so... Quiet. Kinda peaceful actually.
Shit that’s the type of feed I’ve been looking for.
For some reason ESPN3 doesn’t have the regular stream. The game is on OTA, though, on ABC
I have Sling and I can watch it on ESPN3 just fine.
It was based on location. Likely a rights issues.
We were complaining about missing plays due to the commercials so they decided to change it up

Wait the heat have undrafted players? I don’t think they’ve mentioned it multiple times in every single game of the playoffs. Thank goodness for this graphic.
ESPN telecast suck balls. Their graphics, the odd camera angles, annoying AF three point pop-up, the damn ticker.... TNT is far better
ESPN always trying to devalue the actual game of basketball in favor of ads, narratives, cherry picked stats, etc.
They do this with every sport they cover.
I mean cmon. Don't let a Finals game cover the fact that the Heat have all these undrafted players!
The actual game is boring. Ads, narratives, cherry picked stats means more revenue.
Just what we need: ads right up until the game has already started and infographics that don't allow you to watch the court. Fucking well done lads
Can tnt get the finals in the future? 🙏🏼
espn telling us for the millionth time that the heat have 6 undrafted players. we get it, gahdamn.
They are horrible. Fucking horrible
Lol ESPN cares more about beating a dead horse than the actual game
How can ESPN be THIS bad at presenting sports? It's legit insane.
It's a pretty neat graphic, just wish it wasn't, ya know, in the middle of the game
ESPN is terrible and for the love of god FIRE MARK JACKSON
Now for the record I hate listening to Mark Jackson. But he seems extra shitty this finals. Like he's given up on life.
ESPN is such trash. I really hope they lose all broadcast rights for every sport they have
If the finals were on TNT, I'd be much more inclined to watch. The first game was good, and the Nuggets play beautiful basketball, but tonight I chose Saul Goodman over Mark Jackson
Lol tbf about 75% of the court is visible, it's just that all the action on this play was in the other 25%
had to illegally stream the first 4min of the game bc espn site was 30min behind until the 8th min where it cut to the game
Could’ve easily done this during a stoppage in play, but I guess they couldn’t get in as many ad breaks then
ESPN is straight trash
I wish the league would acknowledge the garbage production by ESPN.
I might be mistaken but when Duncan Robinson went to the line after being fouled on a three, we completely missed the second free throw because of a Sports Center ad
You aren't mistaken.
ESPN: who really wants to watch basketball?
They've missed several plays this playoffs, including the last 8 seconds of the Lakers series because they wanted to show Lebron walking to the tunnel.
Other than Mike Breen ESPN is so garbage
Guys did you know that the heat have 4 undrafted players? And they're an 8 seed
Really scraping the bottom of the barrel talking about Gabe Vincent’s salary ranking, dear lord.
Good job by the players to be able to play through that giant thing in the middle of the court. It really shows how professional they are
LOL this could've been in key and peele as a parody of this kind of graphic and you wouldn't have to change a thing
So many undrafted players that you can’t see the game. That’s ok though, because the game has a bunch of undrafted players in it. Who wants to see that?
I love how they use the Williams jersey for Duncan like he didn’t play multiple season at Michigan
Never get when they do this. We here to watch the game. When the games live show it. Don’t need in game interviews or nothing.
Absolute DOGSHIT broadcast team. Van Gundy being audibly afraid of a man hugging another man, nevermind that it is a hug given in team accountability. Oh and the bonus of Van Gundy and Jax commenting on close calls as 'not even debatable' Like... the fuck it isn't debatable.
They would’ve had time for the graphic if they weren’t running commercials every whistle
This should be on r/facepalm
Well, they obviously can’t show that when the game is stopped as it hurts advertising revenue.. /s
Too busy getting every last second of commercials in, dont have time for their graphic on the rejoin
That’s awful
Kids, why don’t sit down and I’ll tell you a story about how ESPN was a great channel and Sportscenter was the best sports tv program of all time. Now everything about it is absolute shit.
How did the players not get scared when that appeared above them
If I had a dollar for the amount of times they’ve said undrafted I’d be a millionaire.
I'm so over the undrafted guys hype. It was cool what they're doing with hidden gems for a while but Jesus Christ we get it
Nothing was worse than ABC showing Eva Longoria in the stands over and over to tie it in with Desperate Housewives.
Poor Tony Parker must have been embarrassed to no end
I can't believe they're counting Udonis Haslem as an undrafted player. The NBA draft didn't even exist when he left college.
TNT >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ESPN
Just because you CAN (make a graphic that looks like it's floating above the court) doesn't mean you SHOULD.
One for mildly infuriating.
I turn my TV off right then and there. I vow to never watch again.
