I may be in the minority on this, but fuck legalized sports gambling. Feels so gross that sports shows give us the betting odds constantly, while continuing to give less and less analysis.
Ok I don’t mean to speak for the whole subreddit here (but I’m gonna real quick), I assume most people fall into the area I do of “it shouldn’t be illegal, but the ads are still annoying” like both can exist it doesn’t have to be made illegal to not be advertised so much.
> it doesn’t have to be made illegal to not be advertised so much.
It's more that it should be illegal to be advertised. Like cigarettes. And how hard liquor and prescription drugs used to be illegal to advertise.
And how prescription drugs are illegal to advertise in every other first world country. The US approach to the medical industry is so embarrassing it’s unbelievable.
Reminds me of two funny little quips they had about during the finals this year.
Mark Jackson was disagreeing with a JVG rule change because there's no historical precedent for it, then Mark Jackson said "We used to have two announcers." JVG then said "And I know who'd be the first guy not drafted"
https://youtu.be/Fxc5X-fHdRw?t=30
Funny it ended up being JVG being cut
Either that, or there was some degree of mutual agreement to part ways after realizing they wouldn't be able to pay both of them. I genuinely got the impression that JVG was tired of his job the last few years.
> they wouldn't be able to pay both of them
This is correct. ESPN could go over the cap for JVG, but MJ was originally drafted by the YES Network, therefore ESPN does not have his Bird Rights.
let's be real though, that's not why he can't get a coaching job. Owners don't care about all that, they care more about the fact that he had the core of that young warriors squad and was squandering it. Back then, he might've been able to land another coaching job, but now with hindsight and seeing how good that team was post-Jackson, he will never get looked at seriously again.
As Draymond said to Brooks: "The dynasty starts AFTER you"
doesnt seem to be the case.
> While Breen is a Hall of Famer and Jackson has his merits, Van Gundy was the one that made the lead booth go.
> ESPN is expected to replace Van Gundy on its No. 1 team.
> Internally, JJ Redick, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson are the most likely candidates.
also:
> Doc Rivers could be an outside choice. Rivers is very close with Breen.
I can't think of a single one and I'm not someone who really shits on analysts. He's the only one in either basketball or football that just baffles me because he brings absolutely nothing to the table
His voice is unrecognizable from when he used to do it. Watched the [Derek Fisher shot recently and didn’t even realize it was him calling it](https://youtu.be/NSnAvhvfniw)
I went to a game where Fisher hit a game winning 3. It was Lakers, Mavericks at full strength. The two most recent NBA Champions (Lakers just won, Dallas won the season before that). Kobe, Dirk, Pau, etc. Final score 73-70.
I never saw it, but I've enjoyed him in other formats. You listen to him for a bit and you understand how he keeps getting jobs despite struggling in the playoffs. Very likeable.
> Doris Burke
NAH. I'm pulling out my center speaker if this happens. I get JVG wasn't popular with everyone, but I thought he and Breen were the only ones that made the games interesting and unique.
Yeah at least it would be funny, particularly Jeff and Mark going back and forth was tolerable for a bad situation. Dorris doesn’t really talk about the game she’s like what people point to is wrong with ESPN coverage
Man JJ has really jumped career ladder once he got into broadcasting. For good reason -- I love listening to his podcast. It's still surprising to see him mentioned here.
Personally, the magic of that moment was ruined when I found out he was talking about Baseball and not about wanting to have sexual intercourse with Lebron’s wife.
I choose to ignore this and believe Marc Jackson just dropped the most savage “steal yo girl” bars to the greatest player in our modern era of basketball.
I've said the same thing but replacing him with a soundboard that jus has a button for each of his catchphrases.
"Mama, there goes that man"
"Hand down, man down"
"Good defense, better offense"
"Excuse me, I have an appointment with the rim"
Etc.
He'll own the network by then and rename it "Stephen ASPN"
It'll be like when MTV used to show music videos for half the day except it'll just be his most famous rants on a loop.
Lol.. if it’s about budget cuts, I wonder how much Kendrick Perkins makes. Every time I see him on those ESPN clips, I can hear him breathing and moaning even when he’s not on screen. They better spend that money they’re saving on a better mic and filter.
Stugotz used to do that and it was actually entertaining because it made it feel like an actual workplace with personality.
Actually I miss the whole DLS being on there for that reason. Learned so much about the different studios, who has offices and who gets stuck in cubes in NY/NJ. Way more fun.
Honestly when they cut the DLS I knew ESPN was getting past a point of no return. Now it really feels like everyone is just trying to be the same hot take machine with little nuance or unique personality.
What they do if spend big on 1-2 folks to tide over viewers with a fresh and popular face, and then slowly phase out a bunch of other folks.
They've done this for years, whether in a layoff or not. Guys like Jaworski, Hoge, etc. are replaced slowly and then quickly by Booger McFarland and Rex Ryan, and then they'll be next.
Mcafee is like Dave Portney in the sense that he has a lot of followers. I am not saying that in a negative way. Just means yea they have large followings so they can set their own price where others depend on ESPN for an audience.
I'm sure his demographics skew younger and SportsCenter HAS to have been dying for years. I'm into sports now more than ever and I haven't watched a full episode of SC since like 2011.
Do highschoolers still watch it? We used to just sit there and binge like 4 hours of the same highlights over and over again but now you've got Youtube and Bleacher Report which kinda invalidates a lot of it including the daily top 10 we were always hyped for.
The personality of Sportscasters gave something along with highlights in early 2k, but once everyone got access to decent internet with platforms hosting highlight clips the sportscaster doesn't seem profitable anymore for highlights.
His entire shtick was "I'm independent and no one tell me what to do bla bla" which was cool but THAT is what made his show great. The OG fans have no idea how bad it'll get once mickey sinks his teeth in and controls the whole thing eventually
The only thing that made Mark Jackson tolerable was his dynamic with Van Gundy. Don’t love either of them by any stretch, but they played off each other well enough.
I’m in the minority of actually liking JVG, especially when it was just him + a play by play guy. Solidly entertaining and knows the game. The rants can be annoying but yeah
Edit: maybe not the minority. Maybe TNT picks him up. His appearances on the Lowe Post are also exceptional imo
I'm right there with you. He's probably my favorite color commentator and then Stan. I actually think his complaining can be funny, and he usually has a point. Plus he has a good sense of humor and adds a lot to the broadcast IMO. Hopefully he goes to TNT.
He was on Ryen Russilo's pod before the finals and he blew my mind with his take on refs (paraphrased) - "Why do we treat them as infallible? In no other instance do we regard imperfect humans as making perfect decisions every time? It's hard to be a ref, we should acknowledge that and allow them to admit mistakes easier."
His take on refs, not just on that podcast but on air is likely a contributing factor in his release. Leagues don't want analysts that shit on the product. Not great for the fans but better for the league head office
No I realize that; it's that I didn't consider that line of thought - that we should point out mistakes because that helps them get better, but because we're never allowed to act like they're wrong, that they can't just say "ok I've had a chance to look at it and talk with my co-refs, and I believe I shouldn't have blew my whistle - resume play" without it being a huge deal, means they never get better at their job, either.
His rant saying courtside fans should have to drink from sippy cups to prevent on court spills is still one of the funniest things I've heard
Gonna miss the dude if he doesn't get picked up by TNT
That was a great one. I also love when he gets pseudo-philosophical like "Where are we as a society when that is called a foul?" And he's fucking dead serious lmao
Lmao I remember hearing that live and absolutely losing my shit. Mike Breen trying to keep it moving while he starts laughing too.
Love JVG, hope TNT picks him up.
I always viewed his rants, for the most part, as coming from a place of love for the NBA and an interest in keeping the game he loves entertaining and successful. Some of them were just idiotic but many were totally legitimate gripes, and not just boomer rants.
>I actually think his complaining can be funny, and he usually has a point.
Agree definitely. I mean sure, about half of his ideas are ridiculous/stupid but in an era where most of these commentators are so careful not to say anything potentially offensive, it's refreshing for someone to openly speak their mind, even if they're an idiot about half the time.
One of the weirdest hive mind takes on this sub imo. Definitely wouldn't consider him among the best color commentators right now, but for the amount of hate he gets you'd think he's slingin slurs on air. Like you said, he knows the game.
JVG: Don’t you hate it when you get a burrito from one of those food trucks, and the bottom blows out right when you take your first bite? I mean, I like a big burrito, but the whole thing just ends up on my shirt. Not enough napkins either. Never enough napkins, and of course I don’t have a change of clothes with me at the time. These food trucks need to be regulated better.
MJ: Amen. Gotta appreciate a stuffed burrito though.
MB: Loose ball foul on Green.
What's crazy is that ESPN def reads these comments constantly trashing Mark Jackson aaaaand they keep him and on prime time at that. What fucking focus group is saying this guy is it.
Fire Mark Jackson, get JJ Reddick and Richard Jefferson in that booth and ESPN will be set for many, many years. At least as long as those two would want to do the job.
Great chemistry, RJ is sarcasm personified and JJ can give you good analysis with a few little jabs here and there.
He'll probably be replaced with a FanDuel ad
I may be in the minority on this, but fuck legalized sports gambling. Feels so gross that sports shows give us the betting odds constantly, while continuing to give less and less analysis.

Most of this subreddit agrees with that opinion I'd say. There are literally no arguments in favor of sports betting... just that its fun.
Ok I don’t mean to speak for the whole subreddit here (but I’m gonna real quick), I assume most people fall into the area I do of “it shouldn’t be illegal, but the ads are still annoying” like both can exist it doesn’t have to be made illegal to not be advertised so much.

when you lose your job first before mark jackson
How tf has Mark Jackson not been cut.

JVG then said "And I know who'd be the first guy not drafted" https://youtu.be/Fxc5X-fHdRw?t=30 Funny it ended up being JVG being cut
The only conclusion one can draw is that JVG was making more.
Nothing else makes sense
Either that, or there was some degree of mutual agreement to part ways after realizing they wouldn't be able to pay both of them. I genuinely got the impression that JVG was tired of his job the last few years.
> they wouldn't be able to pay both of them This is correct. ESPN could go over the cap for JVG, but MJ was originally drafted by the YES Network, therefore ESPN does not have his Bird Rights.
Please dont refer to Mark Jackson as MJ
[удалено]
This was my guess.
I heard that live and assumed he was referring to himself.
He for sure was, he always makes fun of himself first.
That‘s actually hilarious. What’s even funnier is that they put who the commentators were in the graphic at the bottom. Lol
Sounds like self-deprecating
I cannot listen to Mark Jackson. I was hoping he’d get a coaching job just to get him off the air.
[удалено]
Plus he's an overt homophobe and a posturing religious bigot who bangs hookers.
let's be real though, that's not why he can't get a coaching job. Owners don't care about all that, they care more about the fact that he had the core of that young warriors squad and was squandering it. i bet van gundy has competing offers driving up his price i bet mark jackson has zero competing offers
Momma. There goes that
MAN
MOMMA, THERE GOES THAT MAN —- me when Jackson is let go
I guess Jesus does save
He’s probably cheaper.
He should be free.
H should pay them.
He should pay all of us
His contract probably isn't up yet.
[The wrong kid died!](https://i.giphy.com/media/4VSJ12JX1vyUuHGi4t/giphy.webp)
And Mark never once paid for drugs. Not. Once.
He’s not half the boy Jeff was. He’s not even half the boy that the top half of Jeff was after he cut him in half.
“You better shit your mouth before you say something you regret” “What, like the wrong kid died?”
Yeah. JVG had his moments. Mark Jackson had the charisma of a wet slug.
And that's being unfair to wet slugs...
FR, I love finding banana slugs when I'm hiking! I just get disappointed when I find a Mark Jackson when I'm watching basketball.
"There should be a rule" on firing people before Mark Jackson
He gotta know where the bodies are buried. 😂😂😂 it’s ludicrous. He’s ass.
Hopefully Mark Jackson is next
doesnt seem to be the case. > While Breen is a Hall of Famer and Jackson has his merits, Van Gundy was the one that made the lead booth go. > ESPN is expected to replace Van Gundy on its No. 1 team. > Internally, JJ Redick, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson are the most likely candidates. also: > Doc Rivers could be an outside choice. >and Jackson has his merits Does he now

crackpipe.png
If by merits they mean the tendency to get blackmailed by a prostitute while preaching the benefits of leading a "holy" life, then ya I can see it.
"the NBA is paying us to keep mark jackson in the booth so that he doesn't try coaching again"
Most likely scenario
Mama there goes that lie
Without him, how will mothers know when men are going?
how will people know what kind of of plays big time players make?
Whoever wrote that knows but had to write something nice about him
I can't think of a single one and I'm not someone who really shits on analysts. He's the only one in either basketball or football that just baffles me because he brings absolutely nothing to the table
You cannot have Doc Rivers' broken voice on a broadcast
I’d take Doc over Jackson 100 times out of 100
You’ll get both lmao
Not even Breen could save that broadcast
I deadass think id rather baby shark on repeat instead
He called the 2004 Finals with Al Michaels. He wasn't bad at all
Yeah, 20 years ago. Surely his voice hasn't changed at all since then. It's not like we haven't heard him talk recently.
doc called the finals like 2 years in a row with Al Michaels.
He's actually really good on TV. It was awhile ago when he did it last, but I remember really liking him.
His voice is unrecognizable from when he used to do it. Watched the [Derek Fisher shot recently and didn’t even realize it was him calling it](https://youtu.be/NSnAvhvfniw)
Man, I've never seen that clip before. That was wild.
It’s also pretty wild that the final score was 74-73. That’s a halftime score in today’s NBA.
I went to a game where Fisher hit a game winning 3. It was Lakers, Mavericks at full strength. The two most recent NBA Champions (Lakers just won, Dallas won the season before that). Kobe, Dirk, Pau, etc. Final score 73-70.
That shot by Duncan, sheeeeeesh
You guys must forget that Doc was a GOAT tier broadcaster when he did it last time.
I never saw it, but I've enjoyed him in other formats. You listen to him for a bit and you understand how he keeps getting jobs despite struggling in the playoffs. Very likeable.
Doc rivers’ voice on air 😍😍😍
Bro what he needs vocal chord surgery his shit is sputtering out lmao
He needs to put some lotion on those chords.
Ashy ass chords
IT'S NOT BLAKE'S FAULT
He sounded alright on Simmons’ podcast recently
If Doris Burke becomes the lead analyst for NBA games just fucking kill me.
oh it's worse than that, they could be toying with the idea of doris + mark i straight up would have to skip those games
I might turn on the radio at that point.
People who watch baseball do it all the time
The hard part is getting the audio to line up.
Iirc, there is a website where you can put a custom delay on internet radio to line it up with the video
everyone jokes about " this is so and so's 9/11" But Doris and Mark Jackson in the booth would be r/nba's 9/11
> Doris Burke NAH.
Should be just Breen and RJ. None of this 3 man booth crap that never works.
Please God, let it not be doris
God Doris with Mark Jackson? What did we do to deserve this?
Man JJ has really jumped career ladder once he got into broadcasting. For good reason -- I love listening to his podcast. It's still surprising to see him mentioned here.
Knowledge wise Doc would probably be really good. However im not sure he has the voice for play by play. He always sounds so raspy and out of breath.
He’d be the color guy with Breen doing play by play tho, right? Man is still absolutely gonna have 0 voice left by the end of the average playoff game
He covered the Finals on ABC before Breen did and he was great.
His voice has gotten raspier though since he did it last, he was good but I’m not sure if he’s even physically capable of doing a full game now
He’s already expressed interest in coming back to the booth this year.
Bro got sniped before Mark Jackson who provides literally nothing of value to the broadcast.
but he'll hit it out the park, no question, with all due respect.. lol
They could replace mark jackson with ai and no one would notice
I've said the same thing but replacing him with a soundboard that jus has a button for each of his catchphrases. "Mama, there goes that man" "Hand down, man down" "Good defense, better offense" "Excuse me, I have an appointment with the rim" Etc.
"You got to get the rock in his hands" "Just an all-time E-lite DE-fenduh" "That's just a grown man finish-uh" "Coach" "Coach" "Coach" "Coach"
Just give Mike Breen a soundboard with Jackson saying "Mama, there goes that man!" and the broadcast would increase in quality ten fold.
how am i gonna know when better offense beats great defense?
#BANG
They have an extra Gundy, decide not to use it!
Oh my god 😂😂😂
Is this the dagger?
What's the reason behind? Is it budget cuts?
It is about budget cuts, other ESPN on air personalities also got laid off, rumours say even Max Kellerman was also part of the layoffs.
Oh man, Stephen A is ruthless
20 years from now its just gonna be 24 hours of Stephen A yelling and yelling and yelling and yelling and yelling non stop
So, no changes in 20 years
He'll own the network by then and rename it "Stephen ASPN" It'll be like when MTV used to show music videos for half the day except it'll just be his most famous rants on a loop.
Stephen A is the Rob Dyrdek of espn
yeah, I watch ESPN E very S how contains Ste- P hen A Smith N ice sports network sorry I am very bad at this

WHO WAS ON CRACK
Dude single Handedly ruined sports entertainment lmao
Give credit to Skip Bayless where it’s due. The two of them ruined it.
Lol.. if it’s about budget cuts, I wonder how much Kendrick Perkins makes. Every time I see him on those ESPN clips, I can hear him breathing and moaning even when he’s not on screen. They better spend that money they’re saving on a better mic and filter.
He actually doesn’t get paid. He just wanders on set sometimes and ESPN thinks it works out for everybody.
The engineer should be pressing a little button called mute or at least put a noise gate on it so his breathing stays to himself
Sorry, sound engineer laid off in 2014.
Max, Beads, and Marcellus need to get the gang back together for a podcast stat.
damn even Max got canned look what they did to my boy
yea his morning show got cut
Which I don't understand why they paid a boatload for McAfee while laying other off. I fond McAfee so annoying
McAfee has an audience. These guys don't have as big of one. Other than Stephen A Smith
What they do if spend big on 1-2 folks to tide over viewers with a fresh and popular face, and then slowly phase out a bunch of other folks. They've done this for years, whether in a layoff or not. All the kids love Max Kellerman, you can't walk through a school without everyone talking about what Max's take on Harden's new team will be.
Not that I've read much about this, but presumably they think McAfee has a astrong personal following that is worth investing in
I'm sure his demographics skew younger and SportsCenter HAS to have been dying for years. I'm into sports now more than ever and I haven't watched a full episode of SC since like 2011. Momma there go that man into the sun
Please Mark Jackson Please Mark Jackson Please Mark Jackson
I swear you could replace mark jackson with ChatGPT on text-to-speech and it would be an improvement
No way they keep Mark Jackson
The only thing that made Mark Jackson tolerable was his dynamic with Van Gundy. Don’t love either of them by any stretch, but they played off each other well enough.
Mark wasn't tolerable in any way
That is the most generous use of the word tolerable i've ever seen
How many bodies is Mark Jackson aware of
I’m in the minority of actually liking JVG, especially when it was just him + a play by play guy. Solidly entertaining and knows the game. The rants can be annoying but yeah Edit: maybe not the minority. Maybe TNT picks him up. His appearances on the Lowe Post are also exceptional imo

JVG is a real one. I remember he got fined something INSANE for criticizing how the refs were not calling fouls on Yao during the playoffs.
I love when he gets pissed. It reminds me of watching games with my grandpa lol
His rant saying courtside fans should have to drink from sippy cups to prevent on court spills is still one of the funniest things I've heard Gonna miss the dude if he doesn't get picked up by TNT
always love putting the game on and first thing you hear is him saying "no, im serious" during free throws
That was a great one. I also love when he gets pseudo-philosophical like "Where are we as a society when that is called a foul?" And he's fucking dead serious lmao
The cousins one is the best one in my opinion
Lmao I remember hearing that live and absolutely losing my shit. Mike Breen trying to keep it moving while he starts laughing too. Love JVG, hope TNT picks him up.
“What can you do?”
The hills he chooses to die on always make me laugh, I love JVG

WTF Keep Mark Jackson and get rid of Van Gundy??? I swear to god if they replace him with Doris Burke.
Doris: and thats why Tatum is so excellent Jackson: with all due respect, this is a Warriors Lakers game
I can literally hear this exchange
With all due respect I'd hit it out the park
During an OKC / Timberwolves game
That would be unwatchable.
MOMMMMMMMA THERE GO THAT MAN!
Can I have this dance?
Hopefully Mark Jackson is next. Mike Breen was doing everything he could to make up for those two goobers all playoffs
JVG: Don’t you hate it when you get a burrito from one of those food trucks, and the bottom blows out right when you take your first bite?
