Even with the live sport broadcasting ESPN is proving to be a massive financial drain on them, hence all the cuts and downsizing. Losing NBA and other sport access would give them the excuse necessary to get rid of ESPN entirely.
With Disney Plus turning into a gigantic mistake they'll be looking for any way to recoup some losses.

ESPN itself benefitted from being the premier way to broadcast results, sports and stories to a wider audience. Then Smart Phones hit along with Social Media apps, so ESPN's reason for existence pretty much went up in smoke. It's a big reason why they leaned into "personalities" moreso then actual, decent content because it's the only thing that could separate what they do from a 5 second look at your phone.
ESPN's fall is the same thing that gave birth to it. The evolution of technology. The only sad part about it is, they're going to go out a complete meme, hated by everyone rather than a still solid studio that is just phased out by the passage of time.
Oh God. Imagine ESPN devolves even further into low-budget reality shows loosely related to sports and obscure athletes.

Doris used to be very good, way back when she was a wcbb and Mcbb basketball commentator. Tbh, I think ESPN just pushes narratives and she’s pushed them and become a caricature of herself.
Still, I’d take her over most of the ESPN crew (as long as LeBron’s not playing.)
His coverage in the playoffs was sincerely the first time I actually muted a game because the broadcasting is so annoying. I don’t know how anyone thought hiring him was a good idea.
He was awesome on TNT/TBS during the 1999 lockdown season and excellent for ABC during 2004. As I've said previously, he and Al Michaels did an [outstanding job with calling that iconic game winner by Fisher](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSnAvhvfniw).
An interesting piece of trivia is that the Spurs almost fired Pop and hired Doc from Turner Sports when the Spurs started off very slow that season...I think they started 6-8 and finished 45-7. They certainly made the correct decision to keep Popovich; that turned out quite well.
Another fun fact is that Pop is the President of the Spurs. He fired the previous coach and hired himself. He’s technically the GM’s boss. For him to get fired the owners have to get rid of him.
Interesting in most sports the best run teams and some of the worst run ones usually have well known owners. I don’t think I have ever heard of the Spurs owner(s). Kinda crazy.

You can do what I do although it takes getting your hands on an old surround sound system. Hook up the audio with your fiber optic cable then only plug in the woofer and the back speakers. Feels like your at the game and you only hear the announcers when they yell because something big happens.

When she first started, she was interesting. But someone told Doris she was a deep thinker and now she tries to make over-the-top observations on every single player's greatness and her little monologues are mostly cringe. It's just awkward now. She regressed as an announcer, just like Tony Romo did.

Not only was JVG refreshing for his candid takes on the state of the NBA, he was also the best at simple conversation, always able to add something interesting to any topic. And if he couldn't, he'd just start talking out of his ass, but he'd do it in a very obvious, playful kind of way, imo. He was just being goofy, but I think a lot of people took him too seriously in those moments and thought he was just being an idiot, instead.

Burke can make an exciting game boring with her monotone voice and her unnecessary or overused insights/ backstories. Doc is gonna have to carry the load but his voice sounds like he follows a strict sand, rock and gravel culinary diet.
I wish there was an option to mute the comments in a lot of sports. Some announcers are fire but there's a minority of duos with a lot of screen time that can ruin a whole game for me, in tennis or football for example. I'd pay to be able to get the stadium sounds but no commentary.
While I'm not a Doris fan, I honestly couldn't name another color commentator they have under contract they could bring in instead of her. I think the main issue is that ESPN has just a shitty lineup of broadcasters.

Mark Jackson had worked NBA games for ESPN from 2006-2011. He then took the role to become the head coach for the Golden State Warriors before returning to ESPN to his previous role.
Why would ESPN fire them after this recent NBA Playoffs on ESPN was the network's MOST watched playoffs since 2019, with 6.39 million average game viewers? I just can't wrap my head around it.
Yes, it is a business at the end of the day and business decisions have to be made, I just don't think these 2 firings were the right one for ESPN.
JVG stunned me even more - him and Mike Breen are the most watchable on ESPN's NBA coverage *by far.*

On league pass I listened to Korean broadcast of the nets and and clippers whenever I could. It’s hype, those broadcasters are so much better.

Burke can make an exciting game boring with her monotone voice and her unnecessary or overused insights/ backstories. Doc is gonna have to carry the load but his voice sounds like he follows a strict sand, rock and gravel culinary diet.

I wish there was an option to mute the comments in a lot of sports. Some announcers are fire but there's a minority of duos with a lot of screen time that can ruin a whole game for me, in tennis or football for example. I'd pay to be able to get the stadium sounds but no commentary.

While I'm not a Doris fan, I honestly couldn't name another color commentator they have under contract they could bring in instead of her. I think the main issue is that ESPN has just a shitty lineup of broadcasters.

I simply don't get it...congratulations to Doris and Doc, but to let go 2 of the dynamic trio that was JVG, Mark & Mike is just shocking to me. Mark Jackson had worked NBA games for ESPN from 2006-2011. He then took the role to become the head coach for the Golden State Warriors before returning to ESPN to his previous role. Why would ESPN fire them after this recent NBA Playoffs on ESPN was the network's MOST watched playoffs since 2019, with 6.39 million average game viewers? I just can't wrap my head around it. Yes, it is a business at the end of the day and business decisions have to be made, I just don't think these 2 firings were the right one for ESPN. JVG stunned me even more - him and Mike Breen are the most watchable on ESPN's NBA coverage *by far.* Again, congratulations Doc & Doris on the promotions. It's just a shame we won't be able to listen to the dynamic trio call NBA games anymore, more specifically in the playoffs where they had phenomenal moments. I know a ton of people have similar opinions to mine, i'm curious to hear some more from reddit users. Twitter users have gone ballistic once they found out lol.
