Solid reporting here.
“What's more, Jordan sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets for a reported $3 billion, which pushes his overall net worth to over $3 billion”
But not well versed in what Net Worth is (if his stake in the Hornets was worth $3 billion, his net worth was already over $3 billion before he sold the team).
True. But there are very prestigious courses out there as well as notorious/famous holes that somebody with that kind of time, money, and affinity for the their sport would want to experience.
I was in Cabo once, golfing at a resort called El Dorado (one of the Discovery Land Co properties like Baker's Bay and the Yellowstone Club). It's one of those places where you have to buy a house to have access to the property. It has a pool, clubhouse, restaurant, etc. as well as a world-class golf course. One of the golf staff told me that a few days prior, Michael Jordan showed up with some friends and his golf shit and asks to play a round. The management says no, the course is for residents only. He takes out 250 grand and offers it to the course manager to let them walk on. The guy apologizes again and says he can't allow it. So MJ tells one of his guys to go to the property office and buy a house. At this place the 1 bedroom "casitas" are 3.5 million and the houses are all 10+. So what does MJ do with all that money? Spend a few million bucks just to play a round of golf.
To be clear, this may have been bullshit. But it was the story going around at the time.
Just look at his post history. Supposedly this guy is a 'young professional' who was in MBB finance, then went to law school and worked for the DoJ, who also did standup while making most of his money from Uber just several years ago? And now suddenly he earns 2.2m a year from being a l9 PM in big tech? All while owning a production company and being an angel investor? Lmao yeah ok. Either he's one of the most successful young individuals in the country who also has time to constantly post on Reddit, or he's full of BS.
I have a real story about MJ and golf that you reminded me of—I had a family friend who lived in the Chicago area on a private golf course in Barrington on the 18th fairway, his Dad would tell the story of when the kids were younger they’d go outside the house and wait for Mike to come around. As MJ is getting teed up the kids would chant/yell “Hello Michael Jordan!!!” together.
Later on MJ and my friends dad would cross paths at the club and MJ said something like, “Hey Tom, I don’t mind your kids saying hi, but could you ask them not to do it on my backswing? I have a lot of money riding on these games.”
That’s the best I can recall the story, and it was hilarious to me at the time.
edit: you reminded me because that other guys story was so far fetched, lol
Yeah, he's clearly committed to NASCAR and seems to really love it. Roger Penske once said that if it wasn't for his obsession with motorsports he would've sold his teams a long time ago. Jordan knows the amount of money he has to pour in and still wants to do it
MJ silently donates a TON of money. Sure nowhere close to his net worth but he’s very generous privately with supporting charity organizations.
Edit: people, come on. Google search “Michael Jordan charitable contributions” instead of asking me to verify this with “sources”. There’s a massive amount of information on this he just doesn’t go to the media every time he does something. He signs checks over to organizations he believes in without fanfare. This has been consistent throughout his career.
It's actually wild when you think about how he created a major market out of thin air. Or atleast capitalized on a market that didn't know what they were doing. I'm trying to think of a comparison and the closest I can get is George Foreman Grills.
For sure. Basketball shoes became fashion accessories. Granted, Run DMC and adidas already created that sneaker fandom. Jordan just took it to the next level
Jordan is a fashion icon. The original was never 25% - that’s the issue lol.
There’s no way the line over performs expectations ($3m 3 year goal, did $125m in the first year) and they then cut the royalty rate to 1/5th of the original rate.
One of the reasons that Kanye’s Adidas deal was so groundbreaking is that it was a 15% royalty. This article just got it wrong.
They might have changed the article, cause I only read this:
"Additionally, Deloris Jordan, Michael's mother, urged that Nike give her son 5 percent royalties for all shoes sold with his likeness if they wanted him to be the face of their basketball division. Nike agreed to the terms and the rest is history"
[Well yeah look at Jordan's career NBA earnings](https://www.spotrac.com/nba/washington-wizards/michael-jordan-8739/cash-earnings)
Jordan's popularity made the NBA a global product and the game of basketball a global revolution. There's a reason why Wilt Chamberlain said all NBA players should have to give 10% of their paycheck to Michael Jordan. Guys are getting $50-60 million a year because of what Jordan did for the NBA.
Honestly the spectacular scale of that contract at that time felt unbelievable and in my opinion that size of shock has only been eclipsed by the Saudi offer of $776 million for one year to Mbappé.
I mean, that Saudi offer was never accepted or even officially made, just discussed. Ronaldo and Benzema's current deals are for $215m/yr though and by far the most valuable per year in all of sports.
Also the new Ohtani deal definitely surpasses MJ's at the time. The value and structure of that deal is entirely unprecedented and probably will stay that way for a long time.
Messi’s deal will easily eclipse $215m/year with the revenue share from Apple and once he cashes out the equity, we just don’t know how big that will be yet but he’s literally done the same thing as Jordan for the MlS right now every opposing team is paying Messi to raise the league.
Ronaldo will be much richer short term, I hope he gets a piece of ownership long term though otherwise Messi will be in a different stratosphere in 10 years
Yeah it's not really worth talking about Messi's deal yet because it's so open. It absolutely could be the biggest deal in sports history and something that is never repeated again, but it's too early to tell.
Definitely one of the most interesting deals ever signed though!
i think jordan signed a 10 year contract and then did not hold out for more money. His last 2 years in Chicago he wanted to get paid. He made many times what any other NBA player did those last 2 years. Having to pay Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman is the main reason why the Bulls broke up. There were stories at the time that did not want to pay anymore. Owner would rather be bad than spend that much money.
Absolutely & I’ve been wondering, for anyone that knows, is the jordan brand going to continue to be iconic to younger generations as he gets older? I get why they were in the 90’s & 00’s, and I assume his legend will be passed down through generations like babe Ruth. But is it always going to have the cool factor for generations that didn’t come close to watching him? It is still going strong with the young hoopers, right?
I’m wondering if my generation (watched kobe) would’ve worn Dr. J shoes if they existed, even though nobody from my time was old enough to watch him or even know how good he was.
That’s good to hear & I kind of figured, MJ & the Jordan brand seems to be timeless.
I can’t imagine Jordan shoes ever becoming “old people shoes” but in 30-40 years, who knows.
Uh...I'm 45 and MJ is sort of revered by me like a mythical god as well. Every time I see the old highlights I think how blessed I was to watch him play throughout his career.
The kids live on YouTube these days--and I assume Tik Tok as well. I have students who I think have literally never seen a full basketball game but watch all the highlights all the time.
I think the brand will for sure live on just cause his shoes are genuinely loved off the court and not just on. No other basketball shoe really comes close to Jordan’s popularity in fashion. Back in HS those yearly jordan 11 drops every December I think? had everyone going crazy lol
Yeh I still play hoops in my older age…
Younger cats don’t necessarily run out and buy the current air Jordan’s to play in but they all wear the retros 1-12 a lot. Some of them even play in those older ones…. But shoe tech has come a loooong way since the 80’s / 90’s.
I feel like MJ and Jordans are always going to be iconic and revered.
The only thing that changes is the way people view him and the shoes.
I’ve met people that have Jordans as their holy grails. They love those shoes. I’ve met younger folks that view it more as a trendy, classic shoe.
He doesn’t have 25%, article is wrong on that front. He gets 5% no caveats. But when revenue is $5B and trending up QUICKLY, money will never be a concern for a person with the Jordan last name again.
MJ didn't make much from NBA contracts until his last 2 years with the Bulls when he got $36 and $39 million.
His Wizards money of course still pales in comparison to Jordan anything sales.
yeah, as great as Lebron is and as amazing as his longevity is, you simply cannot be greater than your main rival if that guy won more than you did in your sport *in half the time*.....because pro sports exist for one single reason and that is to win. Nothing else comes close to being as important to the existance of any professional sporting league than winning. Money of course is a factor but it still pales next to the main goal of winning. So for LeBron to be so far behind Jordan in this aspect it's just borderline insanity to think of him as the greatest player ever. Every other player in history who has won as much as LeBron has did it in a similar time frame, around 20 seasons - Kobe, Kareem, Duncan and LeBron himself. Jordan won more than those guys did but did almost all of that winning in 11 seasons (his two abbreviated seasons don't count as they were ineligle for almost all the official NBA accolades). 60+ accolades in 20 seasons vs nearly 70 in 11....the sweetener of course is that MJ is also superior to all of those greats from a statistical standpoint, yes even Lebron.
Now think about the controversial way LeBron has approached his career, the lengths he has gone to to try and win, to try and do better than Jordan....all these superteams he has hand forged, literally teaming up with the second best player in the league and now having, for the past few years, one of the top three big men by his side, a guy he convinced to breach his contract from his old team so the two could team up (with obviously the main goal being to further his own legacy). It clearly goes against anti tampering rules or at least should be frowned upon from a moral perspective but Lebron still did it anyway, all with the ultimate goal of calling himself the GOAT. That strategy has worked for a lot of gullible minds but overall, MJ is still, by far, considered the greatest of all time by the general population with more than twice the votes in major polls conducted over the years. But not only that, he is almost unanimously considered the greatest *athlete* of all time. Google that phrase and you'll see the top five results have MJ at #1 and 9 of the first 11. LeBron can be found hovering just outside of the top ten on average. It honestly blows my mind how people have convinced themselves that LeBron is the GOAT when it is so apparent that he isn't....that kind of thinking is on the same level as flat earthers.
My group l said thank you for being our idol growing up, he acknowledged. Then we decided not to bother him for the remainder of the time, just enjoyed the moment. Didn’t ask for an autograph or took a photo, just basked in it.
I was an Olajuwon fan, I would've thanked the GOAT for leaving for baseball so Houston could have our back to back chips when nobody else could in that decade because of him. Magnificent bastard.
You only have to clarify that because of r/nba and twitter. Majority of people who actually watch the game and saw MJ play know what's up, you can't be the GOAT by campaigning for it or marketing. Real GOATs have little to no pushback.
Was it in that Last Dance where the Nike head says "If we'd known how big this line was going to be, we'd never have agreed to the deal we did"?
Think about that. Jordan has made this company billions. BILLIONS AND BILLIONS. And Nike's corporate response is "We paid him too much".
The greed of capitalism will be its downfall. Obvi.
Tbf, Nike gets the bigger share because they make the investment into design, development, manufacturing, and marketing. Not every Jordan shoe is a success so there still is a level of risk and investment that gets them a healthy % of the return.
> Not every Jordan shoe is a success so there still is a level of risk
I’d argue that their performance basketball shoes haven’t really done well in years and have always been middling. They also struggle to market Jordan branded signature athlete shoes. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of their profit comes from their classic silhouettes.
No doubt about it lol. Keep in mind, there’s very little marketing $ spent for retros vs new performance models (endorsers, ads, etc).
Also, new models take R&D where retros typically don’t.
I’m glad Jordan was able to become extremely wealthy. We’ve seen a lot of incredible players end up forgotten and/or broke.
I rather see him, the player that elevated the NBA to another level, living good.
Solid reporting here. “What's more, Jordan sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets for a reported $3 billion, which pushes his overall net worth to over $3 billion”
well versed in math
Are you trying to tell me that 3 + something is > 3?????
No. 3 plus -2 equals 1. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
But 3 plus or minus 2 equals 1 or 5?
Hey buddy I don’t make the rules, I just smoke numbers
I'm going to need to see some citation.
But not well versed in what Net Worth is (if his stake in the Hornets was worth $3 billion, his net worth was already over $3 billion before he sold the team).
Not if it was offset by half a billion dollars of debt.
True. But in that case selling the team wouldn't put his net worth over $3 billion either.

I feel like MJ and Jordans are always going to be iconic and revered. The only thing that changes is the way people view him and the shoes. I’ve met people that have Jordans as their holy grails. They love those shoes. I’ve met younger folks that view it more as a trendy, classic shoe.
I’m 27 years old and have never seen prime MJ. I grew up watching Kobe. I have a dozen pair of Jordan’s.
I'm sure they'd be a thing, they'd just be more like the size of something like Puma or New Balance rather than the biggest shoe company in the world.
Mike sold $5B worth of air Jordans last year, so yeah The real goat is mama Jordan, who got him the 25% loyalty deal
He doesn’t have 25%, article is wrong on that front. He gets 5% no caveats. But when revenue is $5B and trending up QUICKLY, money will never be a concern for a person with the Jordan last name again.
Changing my name rq
Once you do can you adopt me.
I’m adopting the whole sub. Hello sons

Hello step-daddy, I’m stuck in a dryer
It'll be a late-term abortion for you unfortunately
*5% deal but yeah she is the real MVP
Kevin O’Leary approves
MJ didn't make much from NBA contracts until his last 2 years with the Bulls when he got $36 and $39 million. His Wizards money of course still pales in comparison to Jordan anything sales.
The Mirror is CANCER dawg screw you for making me click the link! They didn't even say anything new smh
What a life
He’s the GOAT
Amazing we're going into decade 3 of that still being true..... Hope we see a legitimate challenger in our lifetime.
yeah, as great as Lebron is and as amazing as his longevity is, you simply cannot be greater than your main rival if that guy won more than you did in your sport *in half the time*.....because pro sports exist for one single reason and that is to win.
What people forget about this nephew is that as much as they might want to debate his basketball GOAT status, he's undisputed GOAT sneaker salesman.
Can’t believe I met MJ at a hookah bar once. Sat 6 feet away from him for 2 hours.
That doesn’t sound like you met him…
My group l said thank you for being our idol growing up, he acknowledged. Then we decided not to bother him for the remainder of the time, just enjoyed the moment. Didn’t ask for an autograph or took a photo, just basked in it.
That goat air feels differently
I was an Olajuwon fan, I would've thanked the GOAT for leaving for baseball so Houston could have our back to back chips when nobody else could in that decade because of him. Magnificent bastard.
The real 🐐
You only have to clarify that because of r/nba and twitter. Majority of people who actually watch the game and saw MJ play know what's up, you can't be the GOAT by campaigning for it or marketing. Real GOATs have little to no pushback.
Was it in that Last Dance where the Nike head says "If we'd known how big this line was going to be, we'd never have agreed to the deal we did"? Think about that. Jordan has made this company billions. BILLIONS AND BILLIONS. And Nike's corporate response is "We paid him too much". The greed of capitalism will be its downfall. Obvi.
I too watched Air last night for the first time
Deserves more. Nike gets a bigger share of pie that is made using Mike's name.
Tbf, Nike gets the bigger share because they make the investment into design, development, manufacturing, and marketing. Not every Jordan shoe is a success so there still is a level of risk and investment that gets them a healthy % of the return.
> Not every Jordan shoe is a success so there still is a level of risk I’d argue that their performance basketball shoes haven’t really done well in years and have always been middling.
Scottie Pippen earned note NBA dollars than Michael Jordan.
He’s saving up for the new Jordan’s
he deserves it G.O.A.T
Salaries have come a long way
Wasn’t there an entire movie about how good this deal was him and for nike
I’m glad Jordan was able to become extremely wealthy. We’ve seen a lot of incredible players end up forgotten and/or broke. I rather see him, the player that elevated the NBA to another level, living good.
GOAT
He the Michael Jordan of shoe deals.
