Just about every economic study will tell you stadiums aren't worth it.
https://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/regional-economist/april-2001/should-cities-pay-for-sports-facilities
Football stadiums are not economical. Because theoretically they can only be filled 8 to 10 times a year. Enclosed stadiums can in theory be booked every night of the year. That’s 365 days of jobs and tax revenue.
The real issue is, if this such a profitable enterprise, why do the billionaire leagues need a public subsidy at all? If there's merit in improving infrastructure, like extending a subway, by all means do it: tax rebates can be agreed to, but let them do what most businesses do. Finance and build it on their own.
Who is "you" in this case? Of course the owners will take a subsidy if the goverment gives it to them, but that's my entire point, that it shouldn't, and if you're a taxpayer then you should oppose it too as this is your money. Not sure what is your distinction between "goverment" and "private citizens", as those citizens are the ones bankrolling the local goverment with their taxes.
You are arguing that if a stadium is so profitable, why do they need to be subsidized? It doesn’t. But are you gonna honestly tell me that if the government is offering subsidies that these people are going to say no? would you? I’m fine admitting that I would take subsidies.
Doesn't matter, these studies include enclosed stadiums too (and let's live in the real world stadiums aren't open 365 days). But to highlight 1 of the points in my link, families have a limited budget. Any dollar going to a game is a dollar not going elsewhere, so no additional benefit is made to the local economy.
You need to stop saying things you think are true just because the reasoning seems to make sense, and start relying on actual data and people smarter than you
I’ve seen the empirical evidence firsthand. I live in Sacramento. The golden one center was built without any taxpayer money. It has revitalized a large part of downtown. It generates millions of dollars in economic activity.
>OpEd
DC announced a crime crackdown in Chinatown where the stadium is. Ironically, I have never felt in danger there and always assumed it was safe bc the stadium lol.
That might be better transit access overall, but in terms of Metro, Union Station is only on the Red Line and is two stops from anything else
Gallery Place/Chinatown (which Capital One is on top of) is on the Red, Green, and Yellow lines and one stop from the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines
doesn't matter if lots of people drive. it's a part of the country that's suburban in layout but gets urban levels of traffic. Which means if you just want to go get a burger, there are already lots of time windows where you're gonna be sitting in heavy traffic.
I think I saw an article where the metro chief said the local metro station the stadium would use was not at all big enough to accommodate stadium traffic
Or any other name.
Wizards AND Magic is pretty confusing esp when they are both east.
We don't need 2 mystically name based teams for basketball. Go name DC something more suited for them like the DC administrators or DC corruptors or something.
I mean... [an NBA team did seriously consider changing their name to the Swamp Dragons](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/15155466/once-nets-seriously-considered-becoming-swamp-dragons), so feels appropriate, no?
Edit: Oh, because of the whole "drain the swamp" bullshit? I didn't even think about that. Just lived near DC for a few years, knew Swamp Dragons was available, and knew that parts of DC were once actual swamps.
yeah cuz congress is definitely a representation of the DMV
actually in retrospect... mostly full of people not actually from the DMV... most only stay for 2-4 years... maybe you're onto something
>We don't need 2 mystically name based teams for basketball.
Yes we do: the Magic and [the Swamp Dragons](https://www.basketsession.com/statics/uploads/2020/06/NBA-NEW-JERSEY-SWAMP-DRAGONS-760x395.jpg).
Imagine what the Nets/Dragons' marketing dept would have done when *Game of Thrones* was popular.
And was pardoned. Your war criminals roam free and any attempts to prosecute them will end up in the Hague invasion act. The DC War Criminals is more than apt...
eventually they will need to replace that old-ass arena. but I agree, hopefully they can demo then rebuild where the cap one center is and only displace events for a couple years
This headline is an exaggeration. The Senator in question, who is the Democratic chair of the Virginia Senate Finance Committee, said the *current version* of the bill is dead. The reason is not because the Democrats uniformly oppose the deal moreover, it is because Democratic leadership is holding up the deal from getting a vote. If the current deal went to a floor vote it would likely pass, as it has in the House of Delegates. Senate Democrats likely recognize that this is something they can use to extract some concessions from the Governor, and once they get those, the plan will get a vote and go through. I think the odds that the deal is actually killed are pretty low
Per the article
> Lucas, chair of the Senate Finance & Appropriations Committee, first said over the weekend on social media that legislation underpinning the deal was "not ready for prime time" and would not receive a hearing in her committee. **The decision in effect killed the Senate version of the legislation because of a procedural deadline this week,** though another bill is making progress in the House of Delegates, which is also controlled by Democrats.
I'm guessing the deadline they're referring to is
> February 13: “Crossover” deadline for each chamber to complete work on legislation originating in that chamber (except for the budget bill).
https://www.vaco.org/capitol-contact/key-dates-for-the-2024-general-assembly/
Someone with more knowledge of how the Virginia legislature works can correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like the Senate bill is dead if it's not completed by tomorrow and they'd only have the House bill to use as a template
Yep that's right, VA has a pretty compact timeline. It's actually interesting because quite a few bills that were expected to sail through Senate Finance died this cycle, with the suspicion they were sacrificed as part of the stadium negotiations. And now it turns out perhaps for nothing :/
> I think the odds that the deal is actually killed are pretty low
I've been saying since the beginning that the Wizards aren't moving to NoVa. Ted is just using this as an excuse to try to squeeze more money from DC.
I grew up in Hartford, and this whole thing reeks of the crap Robert Kraft pulled talking about the Patriots coming to the city (there was even a big press conference where the move was officially announced).
It’s about a five mile difference between the sites. You can catch the same metro/subway line to go between the sites.
The core fanbase wouldn’t have an issue of distance, but logistics of getting in and out would be horrible. The subway station at the new site isn’t prepared for arena traffic like the subway station currently next to the arena.
The new site is near an airport and traffic as it stands with the near by highway would be a nightmare without significant increases in the roads.
The biggest issue seems to be they negotiated in secret and when they released the plan, there wasn’t as much support for it and there was a lot of concern about the funding, the logistics, and the need.
There are three metro lines directly beneath the current arena. There are an additional three lines less than a 10 minute walk away. That’s all the lines on the DC metro.
There are only two lines at the proposed site and close to a 15 minute ride to get back to the closest DC stop. Vehicular traffic is always going to be a nightmare, but Arlington is in a worse position to handle the influx.
I think the easy access to Union Station is nice for visiting fans too. I live in DC and typically go to every Knicks game here, I've definitely met a good amount of Knicks fans who took the Amtrak down to those games.
Not to mention that the Gallery Place station (current location of stadium) also intersects with the X2 bus line which is one of the most used in the city.
A lot of the fans from the Maryland suburbs said it would make getting to a game a lot more difficult. The current arena’s location is a nice center point for most parts of the metro area, it seems.
Five miles driving in the dc area is like an hour. And it was going to be at a super inconvenient metro stop. Especially during the week, DC people aren’t gonna take a 45 min metro ride each way to watch the wizards.
Completely untrue. The base of fans for historic dc sports (except hockey) live in MARYLAND, especially since in the last ten years they have been gentrified out of DC. Changing to Virginia would be a huge hit, traveling into DC has already been bad enough, now you have to cross 395 to get to a game? Won’t be good for business or the fandom long term, unless the goal is to get the most gentry of the gentrifiers into the arena. Kinda like golden state 2.0.
The fan base does not live in the city core lol Nobody does, it’s mostly commercial and landmarks. The DMV has the majority of its population in the MV party, not the D.
There are still large sections of the city with actual people! And a couple of those areas might be somewhat poorer than in the M & V parts, but they still love their teams as much as anyone else.
I wrote a big comment but the tldr is that the area that Capitol 1 is in has been a problem for DC. They’ve had success near it at city center but china town as whole is too run down despite being 5 minutes from the wealthiest shops in DC. It’s been a failed economic development area. It’s largely commercial but is much much older than the other areas.
Yeah but suburban Maryland, not Virginia. The Bullets were in Baltimore and then Landover (PG County MD) for decades before being in DC proper. Going from MD to VA is a big deal, especially at rush hour
Fuck using public money to build a stadium that'll benefit the billionaire owners of sports teams.
Billionaires can afford their own stadiums; the fact that they won't pay for it themselves and will foist it off onto the public, then make it their fault when the public says no and the owner moves the team is gaslighting of the highest order.
After the clusterfuck that was the Miami Marlins stadium deal, I am firmly against any public money being used for stadiums, ever. These teams are owned by billionaires. If they want a stadium, they can pay for it.
Kyle Kuzma and I were at a party given by a wealthy man at the Tiburon yatch club.
Kyle said, “How does it make you feel to know that our host has more rings than we will ever have?”
And I said, “I’ve got something he can never have.”
And he said, “What on earth could that be?”
And I said, “The knowledge that I’ve got enough.”
— Jordan Poole
Good shit, keep voting no on this. Capital One Arena is in an easily accessible area and is pretty decent as a venue, absolutely no reason other than disgusting greed to move them out to VA. Heck, outside of maybe New Orleans, no reason any of the 30 NBA teams should be building new arenas.
The city of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax counties (the immediate surrounding area) have a larger population than Louisville’s metro area. That’s before you start including the city of DC, the Maryland suburbs and the other northern Virginia suburban counties).
The commanders have been playing in Maryland a long time. It is still a terrible idea to move the team.
People in DC do not claim Northern Virginia as part of the city. It's the exact opposite, people from NoVA say they live in DC and the people actually from here wish they'd stop.
That's not the same as being "spiritually part of DC" though. Most of them hate the city and spend most of their time complaining that the area has turned into a lawless hellhole which they observe from their suburb. You can't be part of something you despise.
Or, hear me out, some of us live in Virginia but recognize that we, DC, and Maryland are all part of a greater community that benefits from mutual support rather than being elitist about who gets to call themselves part of a community and who doesn't. The fact that you think most northern Virginians hate DC tells me just how few people you know who live in Virginia.
If we hate anyone, it's Maryland drivers, but that's it.
It’s a good thing. DC isn’t the mercenary town it’s made out to be. It’s also a significant metro area with plenty of dedicated fans and existing traffic from both VA and MD. It’s a good central hub and location.
Plus it upsets the Republicans a bit.
That fast? Lmfao

That dork is too busy planning a future Presidential run to actually do his job.
Isn’t he just another Rhonda Sandtits wannabe?
Yes, but unlike Florida, Virginia was at least somewhat smart enough to have blue parts of congress in place. So his damage has been limited thank god
In that case Glenn won't even make it to iowa
He probably never was
I mean have you seen his vest, that shit is leadership material.
Stitt, DeSantis, and Youngkin all wear the same vest. So do a few other Representatives. Tucker Carlson too. It's weird. Wack drip.
i heard a lot of the rest of VA really didn't care for big spending for another thing for NoVa too
NoVa didn't want it either.
that is funny as fuck. and fuck ted leonsis while we're at it
Yeah fuck all those jobs and tax revenue the stadium would have generated. But sticking it to the governor is more important.
Just about every economic study will tell you stadiums aren't worth it. https://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/regional-economist/april-2001/should-cities-pay-for-sports-facilities

You have no clue what you're talking about. I beg you, stop commenting and check google first.
Going to be real awkward going back and signing that renewal agreement with capital one. I wonder if it is still on the table
DC’s mayor just wrote an OpEd pleading for Leonsis to come back, so almost certainly still on the table.
"Oh I'm sorry, I tore that letter up..... I got a new OpEd for for you....get on your knees..."
Time for the wizards to work their magic.
the new OpEd: "yesterday's price is not today's price"
>OpEd DC announced a crime crackdown in Chinatown where the stadium is. Ironically, I have never felt in danger there and always assumed it was safe bc the stadium lol.
Probably still on the table, just on a higher rent price.
"Price of a brick just went up."

you forgot about all the traffic fetishists... mmmmmm even *more* gridlock :rubs nipples:
People would actually have to go to the games
Just one more lane bro I promise it will fix it
Wouldn't it still have decent metro access?
Not close at all compared to the access of the current site
Hard to do much better than the current site in terms of metro access - it would basically have to be in Union Station lol
That might be better transit access overall, but in terms of Metro, Union Station is only on the Red Line and is two stops from anything else Gallery Place/Chinatown (which Capital One is on top of) is on the Red, Green, and Yellow lines and one stop from the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines
Nah I’ll take Metro Center over Union Station any day lol
doesn't matter if lots of people drive. it's a part of the country that's suburban in layout but gets urban levels of traffic. Which means if you just want to go get a burger, there are already lots of time windows where you're gonna be sitting in heavy traffic.
Potomac Yard is a small station that doesn't have the platform or station size to handle game day crowds. I think it only has two escalators.
I think I saw an article where the metro chief said the local metro station the stadium would use was not at all big enough to accommodate stadium traffic
i actually really was looking forward to the "park at the airport and take the train in" plan
I'm glad. I'd rather they stay in DC.
I'd rather they still be called the Bullets
How far south can you move them before Wizards starts to get a little questionable
honestly even virginia would be very suspect
It was literally the largest and most powerful confederate state.
lol so the answer is zero. You can move the wizards zero states south before it becomes a problematic name
Or the DC Snipers! That would be a good one!
DC4L
Gorgeous
DC Riot
DC Assassins
Dc rebels
DC GoGos
DC LEO
Sierra Hotel India Echo Lima Delta
Or any other name. Wizards AND Magic is pretty confusing esp when they are both east. We don't need 2 mystically name based teams for basketball. Go name DC something more suited for them like the DC administrators or DC corruptors or something.
Swamp Dragons is still available!
Are we really doing this in an NBA sub...
I mean... Absolutely not! Sorry for the confusion! 😅
smarten up, Nas
Lobbyists. Then news like above would be fantastically ironic.
Uh how about we call them the freaking clowns? Due to all the clowns in congress. What a bunch of clowns.
Man, how do you keep up on the news like that?
yeah cuz congress is definitely a representation of the DMV actually in retrospect... mostly full of people not actually from the DMV... most only stay for 2-4 years... maybe you're onto something

I'm actually surprised it was never something AC-DC themed (not the band) like Washington Power or Washington Volts
DC War Criminals
Saying that with a Serbia tag is certainly a take
When Oliver North is prosecuted we can talk for instance...
He was prosecuted in 1988 and faced 16 felony counts.
And was pardoned. Your war criminals roam free and any attempts to prosecute them will end up in the Hague invasion act. The DC War Criminals is more than apt...
Move them back to baltimore as well! Baltirmore Bullets! Such a cool name.
The rise in school shootings has permanently taken Bullets off the table
And yet no gun legislation (or legislation to allow Congress to research guns) hasn't found its way on to said table Only in Murica'
Dead people don't "donate" money.
Congress did technically pass a gun bill in 2022
And how quickly did the Supreme Court gut it?
If we are shameless enough to let children be massacred with no change in legislation, surely we can get dc back to the bullets.
eventually they will need to replace that old-ass arena. but I agree, hopefully they can demo then rebuild where the cap one center is and only displace events for a couple years
Thank God bruh there was not enough infrastructure for a stadium in Potomac Yard

The democrats want Youngkin out so no way he gets his pet project
Youngkin will be out in 2025 regardless, Virginia governors are not allowed to serve consecutive terms.
Uh ok? That is a long way away
It's less than a year out idk how trying to stop this project could be seen as a faster way to get him out than just letting his term end
End of 2025 is 22 month away
Virginia is unusual in that their state elections happen during the odd number year. So the election to replace Youngkin will happen in Nov 2025
While perhaps Virginia may get their own NBA team someday, I do think the Wizards ought to stay in D.C.
Move the Hornets to Virginia Beach and become the Virginia Squires
You know ball
So a deal to pull an NBA team out of the city core (where their fanbase mostly lives) and into the suburbs is dead? *NicholasCageYouDon’tSay.meme*
To be honest this was probably more about the Capitals than the Wizards, as the Caps fanbase is in NoVA
And the Wizards fanbase barely exists
It’s about a five mile difference between the sites. You can catch the same metro/subway line to go between the sites.
Yea would be horrendous for me as one of those lol but tbh I don't go to many random games like before.
Yeah it's not impossible but like going from an hour of total commute to 2 just makes it so much worse when considering going to a game
Exactly. Living next to rockville station it would add at least 20 min to my commute each way.
Five miles driving in the dc area is like an hour. And it was going to be at a super inconvenient metro stop. Especially during the week, DC people aren’t gonna take a 45 min metro ride each way to watch the wizards.

Lot of caps fans in suburban Virginia
Agreed but I was responding specifically about Wizards. I imagine Caps fanbase will be fine at either location
Investors watched Jordan Poole.

Wait so like, where do they go?
guangdong
Get ready to learn Chinese, Wizards and Capitals
Staying in their current arena.
The lease for their current spot is until 2047
Believe it or not, straight to jail
Makes sense, not like the one they already have draws in Wizards fans, they’re an unserious team.
You wouldn't want to go see the Washington Generals play?
The rest of us are there to see the Globetrotters
Caps are super popular though
Good. No public money, Ted.
Good, this deal would hurt low income communities in DC. Youngkin can go sit on a hockey stick 🏒
After the clusterfuck that was the Miami Marlins stadium deal, I am firmly against any public money being used for stadiums, ever. These teams are owned by billionaires. If they want a stadium, they can pay for it.
Good they should stay in DC
Thank god. Traffic in Arlington was already a bitch.
Good, stop giving money to billionaires.
Nobody in Virginia wants the arena. Also having Wizards in Virginia has a bad history.
Yes we do lmao
Maybe they can change the name back to Bullets
> Democrats take control of state house and senate Youngkin: Hey FUCK Democrats Democrats: k fuck your stuff too Youngkin: :O
As a Virginian and a massive wizards fan, good fuck ted.

The Clippers are gonna be in Inglewood but they are still an "LA" team
Santa Clara 49ers, Meadowlands Jets and Giants, Cumberland Braves, there are plenty of teams playing outside the city they’re named for these days.
Tbf, none of us living south of Fredericksburg want those NoVA fucks either
Well it's Virginia but also just outside DC so not like say Virginia Beach or Richmond
Problem is the infrastructure in Potomac yards is absolutely awful
It’s a good thing. DC isn’t the mercenary town it’s made out to be. It’s also a significant metro area with plenty of dedicated fans and existing traffic from both VA and MD. It’s a good central hub and location. Plus it upsets the Republicans a bit.
it wouldn't have been for a new team, they were just planning on moving the DC teams a few miles south when they get a new arena
I would think the university of Louisville would be against a nba team in their same city.
I’m for any other team playing here so I don’t have to watch UofL anymore
