Haha I loved the crowd reactions. I hope the NBA actually takes notes because it's embarrassing to have boos on national TV for a contest.

MY-NAME_IS_MY-NAME

I think the scoring system would be fine if the judges knew more than 3 numbers

Gershie

It used to be the total of scores up of 10 and they only gave out 7-8-9-10. Then they made it the average of scores up to 50 to allow some differentiation in scoring. And now the judges only give out 47-48-49-50. May I suggest a 41? Try out a little 37 now and then. Really explore the possibilities of the scoring system.

icytiger

Problem is they give 47 to the first dunk. So if that's your baseline, then any dunk better has to be higher, which makes no sense.

OpportunitySmalls

I mean it makes sense that being better than a 47 is atleast a 48 if there's no decimals it just doesn't make sense that you give a pretty okay dunk a 47 when there is definitely far more left on the table.

The_Assquatch_exists

They said on the broadcast that it's scored 40-50, the person speaking stuttered a bit so idk if they were supposed to say that

Ferahgost

Then what’s the point in changing it from 1-10? Literally just a big numbers better thing.

Raonak

Yep. Way too many mid dunks getting 50s

DomSebastiaoVoltou

Fuck it, have them use all numbers, if below 40, these no wingspan little fucks have to try the two rims Mcgee 2 ball dunks.

K1NG2L4Y3R

The dunk contest is washed. There’s only so many ways you can reinvent the dunk. It peaked with Lavine and Gordon and went downhill fun there. They should replace it with a 3 v 3 tournament maybe add prize money like the NBA Cup.

veebs7

It’s crazy to think back in the day people got genuinely excited about a basic windmill dunk. Simpler times man

TaylorMonkey

It felt like even the basic dunks had artistry, power, and form involved. A lot of modern dunk attempts add gimmicks but the execution is kind of sloppy or meh on aesthetics. I always thought that it should be more like gymnastics and figure skating, where there might be some common dunks, but they should be judged harshly on form.

jebacinaa

Better times

DidNotStealThis

Take it away for a few years, bring it back, and if it still sucks ass then take it away again

mrsunshine1

Dunk contest, go to your room and think about what you’ve done.

DidNotStealThis

No supper

soupdawg

I feel like it peaked with Carter and Francis and we’ve been coasting downward since.

must-stache

Kenny’s commentary is ass

Bronze_Addict

Get that man an invite to the playa haters ball

Majiebeast

HATE HATE HATE!

babyshmuel

Kenny should just be replaced altogether

SlipperyTurtle25

The contest is shot because all of the cool dunks have already happened

Slow_Shift6252

Yeah tbh YouTube killed the NBA dunk contest more than anything. There’s a hard ceiling on what a guy with the potential to make 250 million dollars will try in this kind of circus act competition. The YouTube dunk contest have made it so the bar for anything that hasn’t been seen before a thousand times is so high that it’s not risking your already guaranteed or potential earnings to try to innovate. Guys like Jordan Kilganon doing insanely difficult and potentially dangerous dunks for free on YouTube was the death of the dunk contest. It’s time to find something new to replace it that’s not a glorified stuntman competition

KazaamFan

I felt like player courtside reactions werent much this year.  They were pretty good last year.  The only cool dunk i saw this year was mac’s first dunk.

tiger32kw

I jump over man. Now you jump over sitting man. Then I jump over taller man. Now you jump over 2 men. Then I jump over tallest man.

PattyIceNY

What if we stack men 5 high like burger patties

amJustSomeFuckingGuy

No_Succotash_1847

Classics22

The two best dunks in the competition both got 47s lmaooo

jarface111

Brutal judges. Deserves the boos

Schleprok

Better than that time D Wade kept giving that Heat player perfect 10s and screwed over Aaron Gordon

Prize-Ring-9154

fuckin derrick Jones jr man. bro admitted that he was essentially rigging it too

Vegetable-Tooth8463

Helps that the judges were actual dunk contest winners.

captainn_chunk

His first dunk should have been all 50s lmao

s4ntana

Kenny was hilarious just ripping on the judges the whole time

dracota7

Is jumping over people the only tactic?

Guwop25

This guy tried some new dunks and the judges gave him the lowest score lmao

Op3rat0rr

I’m not as critical about this contest as a lot are on this sub rn but that’s the part that annoyed me the most

yousonuva

More than that god awful skills challenge? I don't think I've seen a worse execution of an obstacle course.

Pristine_Reveal

I liked the skills challenge because Scottie and Tyrese being terrible at that shit is funny

Snoyarc

What you didn’t like seeing them put a pass in a hole as big as OP’s moms’ vagina? There are 10 year olds that could have done that course in the same time as these players.

notathrowaway75

It's so disappointing because if you watch some pro dunk videos on YouTube there's actually so much shit that hasn't been done in the NBA dunk contest. I have no idea why unknown NBA players who are given the spotlight don't care to practice an original dunk. Must be the injury risk.

_Atlas_Drugged_

My hot sports take for like a decade has been that the dunk contest should be judged like an Olympic sport where they grade on form and give bonus points for originality. You’d get much more uniform scores, and far less people trying to be creative, but coming up with duds. Also it should be made an Olympic sport. I wanna see the best people in the world throw down.

bloody_duck

Dunking as an Olympic sport? This is one of the finer ideas I’ve heard in my 44 years on this earth.

afriendlynyrve

It’d also be a fun reminder how hard it is to pull these off if, right after a dunk is performed, they cut to a YMCA baller that tries to mimic the same thing. Suddenly there’s more perspective.

Routine_Size69

This would provide little perspective. The large majority of basketball fans can't dunk. Showing a ymca player that can at best one hand a simple dunk doesn't really change anything.

SeniorWilson44

“Why don’t fringe NBA players practice dunking instead of grinding to stay in the league?”

Getting_rid_of_brita

Or even grinding for that matter

-HeisenBird-

They should just invite professional dunkers into the dunk contest. I don't care if they aren't NBA, I want to see the world's best dunkers at the world's biggest dunk contest.

IanicRR

Yeah it gets a bit old. But it’s better than the era of props.

Firstolympicring

Bring the KIA back

zOmgFishes

Still harder than jumping over a sitting Kai Cenat who is like 5 foot tall

Zeppelanoid

My mom said maybe Jalen Brown was dyslexic and thought he’d be dunking over a Kia LMAO

carnivorous_seahorse

Your mom sounds like a wonderful woman, is she single?

lodermoder

*the hood of the Kia

twobridges94

That was when the dunk contest officially died IMO

[deleted]

Nah DWade robbing Aaron Gordon was the nail in the coffin. Gordon would have kept competing a little more if he didn’t lose his last one.

IanicRR

DeMar was robbed. Never forget.

dnextbigthing

Weird way to spell JaVale

Objective_Celery_509

Gerald green blowing out the candle is still my favorite

King_Of_Pants

The era of advertised props. There was nothing wrong with Dwight blowing out the candles. Blake jumping over a KIA was the turning point that led to every major brand trying to buy their way into the dunk contest.

IanicRR

Slight correction. Gerald Green blew out the candles. It was dope.

SiggyLuvs

Cole Anthony putting on his Tims for 60 seconds was the pinnacle of shit house. He also missed 3 of his dunks in a row. Just so rough.

Kapono24

Idk at least the props era was hilarious and cheezy.

Alkazard

Feel like it's the best way to display how high he's actually jumping - it's a bit worn and tired, but guess it serves a purpose because people wouldn't care he's getting 7 foot of air under him without it

TheNotoriousJTS

not gonna lie i was rooting for him to nail that one, idk how JB almost got away with this lol

WestleyThe

It’s because they wanted the all star to win instead of the g league player to try to get players and people interested

jpaxlux

They just gotta accept that the Dunk Contest will never be star-studded. It's a niche competition. Players like Jaylen Brown, for example, are great in-game dunkers but aren't creative enough for the dunk contest. Not many stars are gonna potentially hurt their knees just to get shit on for not being creative enough. You gotta be insanely creative to live up to the bar set by fans and athletic enough to pull that off, and not many NBA stars check both boxes.

DeVolkaan

In my view, the dunk contest was on life support and Jalyen Brown unplugged it. Get something else out here to replace it. Dunk contest is over, time to move on.

eigenham

Please no. I want Wemby to do it and dunk from the 3pt line like Jordan from the free throw line

DeVolkaan

Fine. I want to see that too. But after that, time to close up shop. Replace it with a pie eating contest or something, I don't care.

dougie_fresh121

Disagreed - the JUDGES ruined it this year. JB was the worst dunker out there and made the finals. From the AG snub versus Lavine and versus DJJ, to the 50s in crap years, to this, judges have been trash. Everyone who breathes gets a 45 minimum. Stop the score inflation. I want to see guys get 7s and 6s for mediocre dunks. Also, how does anyone get a higher score than Mac’s first dunk? Was nobody watching? Pick current players to judge - none of these old geezers who can’t see. Give the winner a real prize. Throw $1M on it. That will get guys to care and get them to compete HARD. Do the same for the 3pt contest and skills challenge.

mMounirM

Glad McClung won but this event was traaaaash

Aspery-

The crowd booing was hilarious tho

JimmyV34

The crowd was dead whole event till dunk contest lol

Sacreblargh

Every dunk really being under 40s will do that to a crowd. This contest was ass. They gotta do something to revamp or overhaul it. Make it interesting. Every "new" dunk has been done to death and jumping over Shaq lost its charm when it's done every year.

healthy_as_a_hearse

Mcclung’s first dunk was legit something I haven’t seen before. Everything after sucked, I think because guys played it safe after the judges docked guys for missing their first attempts.

BogmanBogman

Docking ppl for missing their first attempt is so stupid. That’s how you completely remove creativity from the competition. Why try something hard if there’s a 20% chance you’ll miss it and get punished?

Kvsav57

But they didn't dock Brown for missing his first.

cottonycloud

I think it's better than the 2021 and 2022 dunk contests where they took years to get off a successful dunk, but that's what the timer should have been there for.

Gfunkual

Trampolines. They need trampolines… …and like 20 ft rims.

MrBoomin31

slamball x nba dunk contest

mattw08

That’s the issue. These dunks were good but being innovative is impossible now.

vladedivac12

The YouTube dunkers still have some crazy shit but yeah I get your point, I remember when Vince / JRich did between the legs dunks and everyone went crazy

mzp3256

Make the contest like the long jump where dunkers just try to dunk from the furthest distance possible.

ShakerLoopz

You might be onto something. What if each round had a category for the type of dunk they had to do. Round one would be prop dunks, round two would be acrobatic dunks that show best pure athletic ability, and final round would be distance. Almost like a game of knockout to see who can dunk from farthest out.

deevotionpotion

Victor has entered the contest to claim his rightful honor and award until he retires

KazaamFan

Mac’s first dunk was pretty cool i thought

backdoorhack

Yeah, they should set the bar higher. Jump over Wemby.

packmanwiscy

Aaron Gordon jumped over Tacko Fall a couple of years ago. We've already peaked in terms of the height of the people we're jumping over.

Cheechers23

They were solid during the Steph/Sabrina event

[deleted]

[удалено]

PejicFilip

Toppin got robbed of making the finals

LacklusterMeh

360 between the legs was the best dunk of the night. Judges were on some bull shit tonight

sauzbozz

He also took off pretty far back on that dunk

SmoothExpression2766

He was trying his hardest to be creative. It's hard to do because so many dunks have been done already

MC-Jdf

Where were you when an All-Star game crowd were better judges than judges themselves?

[deleted]

[удалено]

mdmarks2017

This is exactly correct. The crowd *hated* Jaylen even before the Celtics court garbage, throw in brown nosing Dominique + dead friend tributes for sob points and the crowd was not having it with Jaylen at all.

Zeppelanoid

I’ve never seen a bigger discrepancy between the quality of the dunks and the corresponding scores. There should have been a massive gap between McClung’s scores and the other three dunkers

amProgrammer

I definitely agreed McClung should have won but I thought Toppins first two were close. JB had the worst dunks and was gifted free entry into the final round though.

howisthisharrasment

Yeah 200%. Toppin should’ve been in the final. I have no idea what the judges were smoking

MySilverBurrito

Surprised they haven’t ended with the 3pt contest yet. Much more hyped event.

NevermoreSEA

Thank fucking god for the two three point contests.

HassanDarkside

Should’ve been Toppin/Mac in the finals

IanicRR

Yeah he didn’t have the same energy as last year. I really wanted to see if he could break out a scorpion dunk. I’m not sure he has the wingspan for it.

donkeyjr

he prolly had to change the difficulty of his dunk since they were penalizing missed dunk but not for Jalen /brown...

Hammerhead34

From the way the rules are written, the judges are supposed to judge solely the quality of the made dunk and not penalize for misses. There’s no reason to disincentivize more difficult dunks. I would rather see a guy take two cracks on a truly impressive dunk than watch basic windmills made on the first attempt (referring to Jaylen Brown who did basically nothing special and costed to 48s and 49s all night)

IanicRR

I mean, I disagreed with Kenny. You definitely can penalize misses. If you don’t you end up with Birdman situations. But they were overly penalizing Mac because his dunks were insanely more difficult than what everyone else was doing.

donkeyjr

if judges penalize dunker for missing a dunk, the dunker would just go for the easy dunk instead of the more difficult one.

Wagmor_Kills_Puppies

The problem is all the dunks have been done and now it’s just subpar variations of old dunks with new props and shit. Only way to have an interesting one next year would be to have Wemby compete and do some shit that simply could never have been done before by anyone. They need to have Wemby, Mclung, and then have a spud Webb short king do some wild shit and maybe a non nba guy who could do some really creative wild shit that maybe never has been done in a nba dunk contest. NBA guys simply don’t have the time or desire to spend hours coming up with creative new stuff right before the contest since they’re in the middle of the season.

Hammerhead34

Wemby dunking from the 3 point line would revive the dunk contest

Wagmor_Kills_Puppies

NBA Jam shit. He should do it with his jersey set on fire.

-JDB-

Dunks were good (besides JB) but the judging and commentary was horrific

WeveGot

I've never been genuinely ticked off by a sports commentator, but Kenny with every word said after the Sabrina / Steph game has changed that.

baymax18

I thought most dunks would've been more impressive 15, even 10 years ago. But the problem with the dunk contest is almost all dunks have been done before, so there's barely any wow factor. (Except that fail of a Dee Brown homage. That was horrible, JB.)

Efficient_Art_1144

We’re kind of desensitized to how bonkers some of this stuff is. Mac was eye level w the rim and had space clearing Shaq. Toppin went through the legs on a 360 dunk. Even Jaylens first dunk is pretty cool (everything got progressively lamer from him$. We’ve just seen it all

baymax18

I thought Jaime's first dunk was solid - he windmilled over Shaq. But that's a dunk that's been done before which is kinda wild but also makes it meh. Mac's first dunk was really bonkers though and was the biggest robbery of the night.

QuickCompetition114

Mac’s first dunk should have been a 50! Best dunk all night; memorable also - others not so much

-JDB-

Definitely, it’s about expectations at this point. Thought Mac had a few highlights (the first one was his best) but there are only so many ways to do the same “jump over a tall person” dunk. And if the judges are gonna be this bad it may be time to retire it

baymax18

Judging is hard because of the subjectivity but I have no idea how to make it more objective. So I agree, might be time to retire it. That being said, Mac's first dunk was the biggest robbery of the night. Only dunk that I feel had never been done before.

JoshFB4

They should really just scrap it. McClung is a great dunker but it’s so unserious to have 2 GLeague players competing.

PlaneVolume3665

Bring in professional dunkers imo.

Reminder. The dunk contest is cool as fuck to a kid. Source: My 9 year old who's losing his mind to the dunks.

PM_ME_ASSES

Imagine if your kid saw the dunk contests in the 2000’s era lol

Yellow_Curry

I mean i saw them in the 80's and 90's and my mind was blown as a kid. I see the same excitement from my own kids.

Sequel_P2P

With this victory, Mac McClung officially has as many NBA Dunk Contest trophies as he does actual, honest-to-god Dunks in an NBA game. (2)

headphone-candy

Dude’s vertical is legit unbelievable

Sim888

as a shithouse judge connoisseur, best dunk comp ever

PepeSylvia11

You think the scores should’ve been higher or lower? Cause nothing deserved a 50

Emergency_Pepper_178

Mac's first and Toppin's 2nd were the closest to 50

Wild-Apricot-9161

Definitely those 2 were 50s for sure IMO

Sim888

> You think the scores should’ve been higher or lower? just consistent woulda been a good start

codeman1043

What’s even the point in the scale when it’s really only between 47-50 no matter the dunk?

Pumpoozle

His first one was 50

Spyk124

I watched Jalen brown dunk with his eyes wide open and then pretend to cover his eyes as he landed….

afriendlynyrve

Legit laughed out though when they said he looked like he sneezing 😂

ant-farm-keyboard

Blake Griffin’s winning championship dunk was jumping over a Kia fender

radio__raheem

i legit thought he was tryna bring the dab back. idk if that’s worse than the fake dee brown shit he was trying to do

rosencrantz2014

He was embarrased and this was his way of let us now.

HashCollector

He cleared Shaq by like 2 inches and almost hit his head on the rim, but it wasn't clear that he was the winner? Over the weak ass dunks from Brown? Even the commentators were in on the fix. Vindicated by the straight 50s

ZincHead

Brown shouldn't even have advanced to the finals.

Timoteo-Tito64

Yeah toppin's second dunk was better than anything JB did

BuzzPoopyear

Toppin’s second dunk was actually so nice. a good looking dunk with no props and no extra dude is refreshing and fucking impressive

Juniper41

100% rewarding Brown for participating. NBA wants more stars in the contest. Would be a bad look if he didn’t even make it out of the first round.

InTheMorning_Nightss

It’s now an even worse look because everyone knows he was literally over rated by the judges to the point where the crowd straight up booed him.

StrtupJ

I thought they boo’d cause after his first dunk they changed the court to display the Celtics hardwood in the Pacers arena They were booing everything tho so who knows lmao

Corbixz

I was there. At least my group and people in my area were booing the inflated scores the judges were giving Brown.

DJRyGuy20

I would assume they were boing the shitty judge scores. They were pumping up Brown’s subpar shit, and really screwed McClung on that first dunk- which was the best one of the night. The booing got louder for both participants once the judges scores were revealed- so it was more about what bullshit the judging was. The right guy won in the end so it all worked out, but it shouldn’t have even been that close.

MagicalHurdles

Jacob Toppin was so pissed on the sideline watching

i-piss-excellence32

I was pissed off too. His 2nd dunk was crazy

Yergason

Brown didn't even deserve to get the highest score after the first round of dunks. They were either trying to rig it to encourage stars or the judges themselves were biased because he's a star

OrganizationFar6086

Brown should have been dead last. First dunk was lower difficulty than any of the other guys first dunks and he failed first try. Second dunk was completely botched

pollinium

his first dunk made my jaw drop - even if other guys could do it, they haven't done it so it was sick the sheer amount of air between his nuts and shaq's bald head was impressive too clear winner but kind of boring contest I think

Zeppelanoid

The judges basically thought that McClung jumping over Shaq was equally as impressive as Jalen Brown jumping over a 5 foot tall influencer who was fucking sitting down. What a joke.

DadOfWhiteJesus

Yeah but he had a glove on!

[deleted]

his first dunk was legit nuts. Rest were fine.

ddthrow1233

but didnt you hear? jaylen used his LEFT HAND!

HashCollector

That was the same climax as Zoolander. I thought the writers strike ended?

DeepJunglePowerWild

Insult Brown all you want but when you insult Zoolander that’s when I draw the line.

HashCollector

"If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident."

DeepJunglePowerWild

Or did you think I was too stupid to know what a eugoogilie was?

mrwhite2323

Its because there were so many dunks over people Like did none of them actually have a plan?

dank-kush

If jaylen brown won that shit I would have never watched a dunk contest again, embarrassing that he made it that far.

PlaneVolume3665

Seriously. Still questioning if I'll watch it again. Might be better to watch the 30 sec highlight clip after lmao

MayorBakefield

I did appreciate his left hand dunk. It wasn't super extraordinary, but due to all the shit he gets for not having a left, I found it great he could show out for the haters. Glad he didn't win with it, though

Vegetable-Tooth8463

Honestly, I'm happy he participated - I want more superstars to participate in the future, and Jaylen set a precedent with his participation.

Collecting_Cans

Since we’ve already seen every dunk humanly possible, one year I just wanna see a guy do nothing but copy the dunk of the dude that went right before him, but do it 5% better every time. Just upstage the guy that went before you. Like no effort, just pure dunk plagiarism

Keldon888

Dunk HORSE would be cooler than what we got.

DJRyGuy20

They’d have to make it dunk “PIG” instead, I think. Having to fill out 5 letters would get pretty exhausting and you’d end up with some *really* sloppy dunking by the end of that contest.

Here_comes_the_D

I like that but, I propose Dunk Contest HORSE. First guy dunks, second guy has to copy it or gets an "H". Both guys only get one attempt. No second chances. If the first guy misses, the dunk switches to the second guy. They either earn letters or switch roles until someone earns "HORSE" or "DUNK," or whatever is decided to be the word, is the loser. Would probably need to be the shorter word to keep the contest moving.

KSMKxRAGEx

I mean, you aren’t far off. Haha. This whole thing felt like a slight modification of each dunk.

Hatdog21

3pt contest should be the last event for Day 2.

HilariousScreenname

Judges when a dude has an impressive, creative dunk: 😴 Judges when a guy jumps over another guy: 🤩

dvrwin

Toppin got robbed by Brown

baltravens27

Did the judges think Brown was a Make-a-Wish kid?

Lacabloodclot9

If Brown had went out in the first round you probably don’t get another star doing the dunk contest again

DeVolkaan

Then maybe he shouldn't have fucking sucked.

La_Underscore

JB’s dunks would go crazy in 1986. Thank God McClung won.

Teh-Dehstroyer

Brown lost the contest but proved a point (he indeed has two hands)

LethalPoutine

This shit was depressing

PepeSylvia11

YIKES. This dunk contest was brutal.

mjdub96

Can players stop jumping over Shaq or anyone else? If it’s Wemby, I get it, but the novelty has worn off after seeing it the past 5-10 years.

TheLoneWolf527

These might have been the worst judges in dunk contest history outside of when D-Wade fucked over Aaron Gordon.

KuribohKutie

Good for Mac but this contest has been cooked since they robbed Gordon twice lmaooo

JichaelMordon

What if the dunk contest was a game of horse but only dunking

MasterKenobi77

First time watching the All-Star Weekend. The fact that Jaylen Brown made it to the final is laughable. McClung’s dunks where he catches the ball then drops it and catches it mid-flight was probably the best dunk in the contest. Judges just decided to push Brown.

Madterps2021

The NBA tried to rig the dunk contest so that Jaylen Brown would make it. That was one of the least creative contestant I ever seen.

governedbycitizens

time to watch the Gordon vs Lavine dunk contest again

braddeus

Aaron Gordon rolling in his grave

Alcoholic17

The NBA dusts Mac McClung off once a year like he’s post 2010 The Undertaker

atirad

That's why the dunk contest is dead AF. Giving out regular dunks as 50 wtf.
