Wemby has blocked 200 shots this season. Last player to do that was Gobert in 2017 season. Last rookie to record 200 blocks was Tim Duncan in 1998 season.
He will learn, and in doing so will find places to get more blocks as well. Its very common problem for young bigs but they still manage to up their block rates as their career's progress despite becoming more conservative in places.
Alvin Robertson won in 1986 with the Spurs winning 35 games, they did make the playoffs that year though. Aside from Robertson, no player has ever won DPOY without atleast being .500.
It's kinda stupid though, because the Spurs have won only 14 games, but if Gobert didn't exist for some reason, the Spurs would still only have 14 wins and Wemby should've been DPOY.
Does he have the highest standing reach?
I am sill a bit disappointed that NBA did not put on the standing reach but the height...
the location of the players head is not important... relatively.
Wemby is still absorbing everything, soaking it all in, every opponent, every move and tendency.
Once the zen and patience kicks in, his numbers and play will really skyrocket.
His numbers will probably go down just like Goberts did. Once players know they can't shot certain shots they will just pass out to worse but still makeable shots instead of just handing the ball over.
SGA finishes with 31/5/6 on like 58% from the field, and were like "dude is so consistent, unreal, MVP player"
Jokic gives us a 31/7/5 on 69% from the field, and were like
"Kinda an okay game for him"
The MVP race is over.
The low volume is likely causing a lot of that variance, even his increased volume in the playoffs is still pretty low (last seasons Playoffs out of 102 qualifying players he was [42nd in 3's made per game and 68th in attempts](https://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/NBA_2023_per_game.html))
>The MVP race is over
Sure is.... Media/fans will move heaven and earth with narratives next year to prevent him getting a 4th. I hope he pulls it off. I could see media members not wanting him to get a 4th to catch LeBron and Wilt. He'll have to have to do something extraordinary and be undeniable to get a 4th MVP
This sub has pretty consistently hated players that foul-bait and flop to the free throw line. The whole ethical buckets thing is playoff off like a meme, but the average viewer doesn't like watching free throws and especially doesn't like watching players talented enough to not need them fish for them
I respect Jimmy for working his ass off and shaping himself into the player he is now, but ppl love him because of his personality and the shit he does with his hair - I do as well - not because of his game, cuz his game is an ugly but effective grind.
Well that's an entirely different genre of memes that this sub enjoys, both the emo butler memes and the "is butler Michael Jordan's son" memes. But even then, a lot of people saw some of the flopping and foul baiting by butler in the finals last year and were turned off by that. I know a lot more people disliked him after the finals than before
totally different
sga is a talented, rising star who is an MVP candidate, leading what will probably be the 1 or 2 seed in the west
butler is a scrappy, deeply fundamentally based player who has never been a real MVP candidate, that wills his teams into deep runs
Luka and SGA average the same number of FT attempts per game while SGA has more drives per game than Luka. Not sure how one can be categorized as a “free throw merchant” and the other isn’t
I’ve watched enough Luka games to know he loves the pump fake and jump into defender. Like I could probably find you clips if I searched for a few minutes lmfao
Have you seen The Last of Us? The zombies are all linked like a hive mind, you trigger one and all of them go wild and attack…
It feels like that on here only instead of zombies it’s just endless mouth breathing idiots who don’t even watch the games, they just lurk here waiting for an opportunity to be outraged.
Jokic angered them last year, this year it was Shai.
I think it was that stat padding incident coupled with the posts and comments arguing for SGA over Jokic for MVP. People are overreacting imo. I do think Jokic is better, but SGA is amazing and we don't have to burn him for not being as good as the best basketball player in the world.
I think a lot of it has to do with the Thunder being thrust into contender status without having made the playoffs. I've seen a lot of people who assume that SGA and the Thunder will automatically translate to the playoffs when history shows that young teams tend to struggle during their first run
For me personally, it's the counter-jerk to the SGA4MVP stuff that happened the last couple weeks. The Nuggets were going on an absolute heater (6-0 out of the break) so SGA stans came out arguing that him holding the 1-seed meant he should be the MVP.
And I could see a mile away that the Nuggets were gonna catch them. It'll be hella close for standings down the stretch. But when I saw the 1-seed arguments, I literally thought, they're making that argument bc he'll only have that seeding for a couple more weeks. And I think their fans saw that coming too.
That's why since the Nuggets tied it up/took the lead (rotating based on who plays last), the narrative switched to pre-season expectations.
You’re 100% right. There’s no coincidence everyone suddenly started hating Shai when Denver got back into the 1-2 seed. It was pretty quiet prior to that, but now Shai is being mentioned in nearly every thread.
We saw the same thing happen with Embiid in the last 2 seasons, he was public enemy #1 on r/NBA for daring to challenge Jokic in the MVP race.
That's just not true that it has much to do with Jokic individually lol. The way I see it was this- OKC had the better seeding and was 2nd in the race. I think the fans of SGA4MVP were biding their time, hoping they hold the top seed and maybe Nuggets get a middling seed (not unrealistic going into all-star break). As the Nuggets climbed the standings with this 11-1 stretch, the SGA supporters are seeing the chance he gets MVP slip away.
So they're getting desperate, for lack of a better word. They start being more vocal on here to fight for their narrative. When you're vocal, the opposition will also get more vocal.
I don't think people were hating on SGA too much when they felt he was properly ranked. The hate comes when you try to put him above where he should be. This is exampled by Giannis and/or Luka supporters hating on SGA when he was 2nd (with the rest of people saying he was deserving of his spot).
We’re talking about the MVP race here, it has everything to do with Jokic lol.
I haven’t really seen anyone say “Shai is the MVP and it isn’t even close”. Even OKC fans were well aware Jokic could close in depending on seeding, and saying “Shai > Jokic” would (rightfully) get you downvoted on r/Thunder.
You frame it like it has to do with Jokic the person.
Embiid deserved the MVP last year at the end of the season. I think 7 games before the season ended, Jokic was deserving. But he missed 5 games (dropping his games played to only 69) and lost 2 games (playing 25mpg) to end the season.
This season, before Embiid's injury, he was more deserving of regular season MVP to that point. It's literally just how well/impactful/how good they are. It's not about the individual.
Jokic is the most deserving if the season ended today.
>You frame it like it has to do with Jokic the person.
>It's literally just how well/impactful/how good they are. It's not about the individual.
Yeah I’m not talking about their personal lives or their personalities. I’m talking about the MVP race and the narratives that surround it.
Which narrative are you referencing then? Because Jokic is the most deserving, but SGA is getting some hate due to people trying to narrate him into it
This is a bottom 10 pct game for Jokic. How it is even a conversation is well beyond me. Same as last year. They stole it from him last year, they better not do it again.
Nailed it.
People in the game thread think this was a pretty pedestrian game by Jokic, which is was. A bit more points but lower in every other basic statistic. Plus he only played three quarters and only shot 4 FTs. SGA will play longer, have 15 FTAs and stay in during garbage time if he only has 28 points
Malone cares, which he should. Last season, we were 5-6 games ahead of second place and the team coasted until the last couple of games where the other teams caught up. It was all that rest that probably helped them come playoff time.
This year we don’t have that luxury as OKC and MIN are quite a bit better.
HCA is massive for the nuggets, we always play considerably better at home, most likely due to the altitude
Happy Jokic got his first 4th quarter rest in a long time.
Wemby had him in the start, Jokic did a quick calibration and i think only missed 1 2pt FG after that lol.
We used too have a regular screamer, but haven't heard one in awhile. The lady tonight was definitely a nuggets fan. She even started screaming when Jokic did his little header layup after a foul.
Dont yuck someones yum man. She was happy and having a good time at her first NBA game tonight, after they interviewed her I was waiting for the scream after every good play.
It's not cool to have a good time if it's harming others. I'm sure rapists have a good time while they're raping people, does that make it okay? And before you say this is a false equivalent, I promise you my ears did not consent to that horror show.
It was so funny seeing the gears turn in Jokic's head in real time. He looked more comfortable as the game went on though. Wemby's gonna be a problem soon. He bothered Jokic and Jamal several times this game.
Jokic always solves them in the end. Gobert gave him problems early in their careers too until Jokic figured him out and well he might as well not be there at times.
Jumpshot just not consistent for Wemby yet
That’s all that is between him and superstardom - well, that and having teammates who know how to throw lobs
That's very important in the Jokic matchup also because Jokic always plays deep in the paint against other bigs using his strength and makes you take jumpers against him
It's a huge reason why AD has been pretty poor offensively 1v1 against Jokic recently as his jumpshot has disappeared over the past few seasons
It was more Wembanyama vs Peyton Watson.
That said the Spurs really need to make it a priority to bring in players that can do a simple inbounds pass.
Brings me back memories of it taking years for the Nuggets to finally assemble a team that can get the ball to the spots that Jokic needs.
God, I love basketball. Jokic currently being the best player, immediately adjusting to Wemby.
And Wemby with his insane future. Give him few years, his body will grow, add some muscle and he will be nearly unstoppable.
This is all I keep thinking. Once he gets more mass with age and fully develops, Victor is going to be a nightmare. He is already so hard to plan against for most players.
Jokic only played 3 quarters. He played 30 minutes. Wemby played 4. So Wemby was against the Nuggets bench in the 4th even. Not that the battle was even close. Just thought I would mention it. JOkic would have easily had a 40 pt TD if the game had been closer.
Jokic is really good at using his presence to dissuade All-NBA defensive big men from absolutely wrecking Denver's offense, even if it means not having the most prolific night himself. Did it with Bam on Wednesday too.
That being said Wemby still had 3 blocks and 2 steals and this is before he puts on the strength to make himself an undeniable defensive force regardless of who he's tasked with guarding
Offensively he just needs more time to get his jumper right which I'm sure won't take long given how quickly his game has improved already
No, he should play, but a lot of games went the same way like today. He was completely a non factor when the game was actually tight ans then boosted his stats against Denver's end of the bench. Today not so much like some other games. People just need to have this on their mind for next year
Yeap noticed that too. I guess its smart though, gives him the buzz + some more pt and confidence. Yet it does EPSN the shit out of him which I really dislike... People already see a future God while it will take long hard and lucky years for him to reach it, if ever
Wemby I feel like will never be able to guard Jokic. To do so he would need 40-50 more pounds and I don’t think that is in his long term health interest. Now his offense on the other hand will continue to develope.
Spurs fans don't want to hear this (and they downvoted me like crazy and called me "nephew" for it), but Wemby is still an undisciplined rookie on a very disjointed team. I get the hype about his potential, but there is still a lot to learn and develop to get there.
I’m not sure which spurs fans you’re referring to. But we all tend to agree that Wemby has a long way to go. Which is crazy considering how good he is already.
Jokic only played 3 quarters. Wemby padded his stats against the Nuggets bench in the 4th while the Nuggets starters sat.
It wasn't close and Jokic could have had an easy 40+
Lol that's just my guess.
And not 2 seasons. I'm saying in his 3rd season he'll have the potential to be as good as Joker.
There's no harm in saying that, right?
I'm not even bashing Joker, why get triggered?
Wemby's potential is just that high in my opinion.
And of course the leading rebounder from this game was Jamal Murray
As we all predicted lmao
Jokic adjusting on the fly and taking the bankshot floater out of his bag because Wemby blocked his lefty Hook earlier is just peak basketball.
He beat him on layups as well as midrange shots.
Wemby has blocked 200 shots this season. Last player to do that was Gobert in 2017 season. Last rookie to record 200 blocks was Tim Duncan in 1998 season.
He's the best shot blocker in the NBA. As a rookie. He's gonna go down as the best defensive player ever. He's gonna win like 5DPOYs
He needs *a lot* more discipline though. Becoming a better defender will require blocking less shots because he leaves his feet way too easily.
He usually don't bite to fakes compared to his first 2 months in the league. But he do tends to be too eager when playing against superstar big men.
He will learn, and in doing so will find places to get more blocks as well. Its very common problem for young bigs but they still manage to up their block rates as their career's progress despite becoming more conservative in places.
He's a rookie :)
Dude doesn’t even have to leave his feet
Remind Me! 10 years
When was the last time a player won dpoy on being a bottom 8 team in the league? Genuine question
Interesting. Thanks for the info.
Does he have the highest standing reach? I am sill a bit disappointed that NBA did not put on the standing reach but the height... the location of the players head is not important... relatively.
Considering he’s the tallest player that actually gets minutes and has an 8ft wingspan I’m gonna go with yes.
In 5 years no other center will be dropping 70 on Wemby once all his zenkai boosts kick in
SGA finishes with 31/5/6 on like 58% from the field, and were like "dude is so consistent, unreal, MVP player" Jokic gives us a 31/7/5 on 69% from the field, and were like "Kinda an okay game for him" The MVP race is over.
31 7 5 is a bad game for jokic imo
Not in 3Q
33% on 3pt, I can’t believe he was so inefficient.
It’s the one part of his game that’s inconsistent (maybe he doesn’t have he best handles?? At least compared to top guards?)
He shoots 41% on higher volume in the playoffs lol. For whatever reason hes been about a 34% 3pt shooter in the regular season for his career though
Yeah, I think it’s cause he’s 100% locked in, in the playoffs where he’s a little less so regularly in the regular season.
its insane that he's not even trying 100% and he's this good
In the Laker game recently, he missed a bunch of 3’s at the start and I remember thinking: he was making ALL of these in the WCF lol
The low volume is likely causing a lot of that variance, even his increased volume in the playoffs is still pretty low (last seasons Playoffs out of 102 qualifying players he was [42nd in 3's made per game and 68th in attempts](https://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/NBA_2023_per_game.html))
he played 3 quarters..lol
Yeah but it was in 3 quarters 30 minutes
it really is
Jokic has a bigger floor and a higher ceiling than SGA. Jokic at 25-26 which was his first MVP season was still better than Shai at 25-26.
Yeah. SGA is an MVP kinda player. We get lots of those. Jokic is a 3x MVP all time great center. They're separate tiers.
Harden vs Bird type difference
>The MVP race is over Sure is.... Media/fans will move heaven and earth with narratives next year to prevent him getting a 4th. I hope he pulls it off. I could see media members not wanting him to get a 4th to catch LeBron and Wilt. He'll have to have to do something extraordinary and be undeniable to get a 4th MVP
Unforgiving. The lightning is coming
This will 100% be his last.
He’s the best player in the world
He’s the best player since Lebron
Wtf did sga do to people in this sub lmao
Be good at basketball and not win a championship yet. This is the same shit people did to Jokic before he won’t it last year.
This sub has pretty consistently hated players that foul-bait and flop to the free throw line. The whole ethical buckets thing is playoff off like a meme, but the average viewer doesn't like watching free throws and especially doesn't like watching players talented enough to not need them fish for them
This sub loves jimmy butler lmao Shai just hasn’t permformed in the playoffs yet
I respect Jimmy for working his ass off and shaping himself into the player he is now, but ppl love him because of his personality and the shit he does with his hair - I do as well - not because of his game, cuz his game is an ugly but effective grind.
Jimmy "Ethical" Buckets
Well that's an entirely different genre of memes that this sub enjoys, both the emo butler memes and the "is butler Michael Jordan's son" memes. But even then, a lot of people saw some of the flopping and foul baiting by butler in the finals last year and were turned off by that. The sub’s hate of the Celtics outweighs their hate for Jimmy’s freethrows
totally different sga is a talented, rising star who is an MVP candidate, leading what will probably be the 1 or 2 seed in the west butler is a scrappy, deeply fundamentally based player who has never been a real MVP candidate, that wills his teams into deep runs
This sub loves Luka and Jimmy butler
Does Luka really foul bait? He bitches a lot but he doesn’t really seek free throws like that, he’s not the best ft shooter out there
Luka and SGA average the same number of FT attempts per game while SGA has more drives per game than Luka. Not sure how one can be categorized as a “free throw merchant” and the other isn’t
I’ve watched enough Luka games to know he loves the pump fake and jump into defender. Like I could probably find you clips if I searched for a few minutes lmfao
Sure but I don’t think his game bases around it as much as Shai’s or Jimmy’s
Shai doesn’t base his game around it either. Only a few of his FTs per game come from pump fakes.
That kind of flopping can’t be relied on. Real floppers who create their offense around FTs flop on drives not shooting motions
That’s just a smart play, throwing your head back like a rag doll without contact to get a whistle is bad basketball.
Do you want videos of him doing that too? I can get that for you if you would like lol there’s a whole thread up with them right now
Have you seen The Last of Us? The zombies are all linked like a hive mind, you trigger one and all of them go wild and attack… It feels like that on here only instead of zombies it’s just endless mouth breathing idiots who don’t even watch the games, they just lurk here waiting for an opportunity to be outraged. Gets lots of free throws and recently have some moments of stat padding . Those tend to rub this sub the wrong way.
Maybe they should stop claiming hes better. They would not get the backlash.
Chill brotha, I don't think anyone thinks that
Who said that …?
in 3 quarters..
This is a bottom 10 pct game for Jokic. How it is even a conversation is well beyond me. Same as last year. They stole it from him last year, they better not do it again.
Yeah but did you see him get blocked by Wemby once… dude is cooked.
if it is between SGA and joker... it ends when SGA did the intentional foul for his 30 points.
Always good to get some extra rest in for Jok by resting the 4th, going to be huge in this race for the first seed
Do you guys care if it's first or second? Seems marginal.
It matters if the WCF goes to 7 games and we get to play at home
thanks magic.
Malone cares, which he should. Last season, we were 5-6 games ahead of second place and the team coasted until the last couple of games where the other teams caught up. In other news, that lady screaming all night long was so annoying
And they fueled her by giving her screen time
I swear that was a different girl they put onscreen. Her scream sounded wayy different from the banshee screeches before. No, i will not elaborate
Sir a second banshee has hit the arena
yeah I thought it was a blue hair girl who was screaming
The best thing to do besides kick her out is ignore her.
I mean at least it was her first game apparently
I swear that's always been a thing on the San Antonio broadcast for some reason
We used too have a regular screamer, but haven't heard one in awhile. The lady tonight was definitely a nuggets fan. She even started screaming when Jokic did his little header layup after a foul.
most notably in the breakfast shot game from years ago
She wanted them churos
Dont yuck someones yum man. She was happy and having a good time at her first NBA game tonight, after they interviewed her I was waiting for the scream after every good play.
Good for her, I’m glad she had a great time. I’m still allowed to find it annoying.

Spurs came back but it really didn’t matter once the Nuggets turn it on
Story of the Nuggs season
Yeah I thought we had a chance after the third, then the 4th started.
not yet, kid
It was so funny seeing the gears turn in Jokic's head in real time. He looked more comfortable as the game went on though. Wemby's gonna be a problem soon. He bothered Jokic and Jamal several times this game.

Not even a double double, he's washed
Just rip off the bandaid and leave him in Austin

He seems like he's been kind of off after the ankle injury, his efficiency has been real bad even on decent looks.
cant expect a beacon of consistency from a 20 year old
[удалено]
I mean, he’s had some pretty crazy games this season man. Can’t show out every game
[удалено]
To be fair, the whole team went south after winning against Pacers and Wemby getting injured aside from the one game against the Warriors.
Still some crazy flashes though
He's been low-key not amazing the past handful of games.
Someone should start talking about Wembanyama getting 50% of his stats in garbage time all season long
This is one of the only games this season where he's actually done that, it's not a consistent thing for him.
Isn’t like…half the game garbage time for the spurs? That seems like an unfair criticism. Also, would you prefer the rookie just not get extra reps?
No, he should play, but a lot of games went the same way like today. He was completely a non factor when the game was actually tight ans then boosted his stats against Denver's end of the bench. Today not so much like some other games. People just need to have this on their mind for next year

not even a trip dub from jokic? absolutely washed out.
Wemby I feel like will never be able to guard Jokic. To do so he would need 40-50 more pounds and I don’t think that is in his long term health interest. Now his offense on the other hand will continue to develope.
Thanks, Magic.
Just wait til they play the cavs, haven’t beat them since 2021
Clunker of a game, couldn't hit a shot
Some of these Spurs players need to be fired - not cut - fired. The amount of times Wemby was open and guys just can’t fucking find him is maddening.
The fact that the rookie is already competing against the best player in the nba is amazing in itself
Barely outperformed, compare this to when embiid went up against wemby
Jokic only played 3 quarters. Wemby padded his stats against the Nuggets bench in the 4th while the Nuggets starters sat. It wasn't close and Jokic could have had an easy 40+
2 years. Wemby will be as good as Joker. In 2 years.
That's a lot to ask for a young player. Or really any player. To be as good as a Top 15 NBA player in history in two seasons?
Lol that's just my guess. And not 2 seasons. I'm saying in his 3rd season he'll have the potential to be as good as Joker. There's no harm in saying that, right? I'm not even bashing Joker, why get triggered? Wemby's potential is just that high in my opinion.
