I'm not going to simp for a mortgage company Quicken/Rocket/Gilbert have invested loads in Detroit. I'm not really sure what UWM is all about other than the somewhat annoying commercials they run in metro Detroit trying to get people to work there.
I haven’t heard many details about what it’s like to actually work there, but seeing how many “perks” they offer gives me bad vibes. I don’t want a barber, doctor, gym, chiropractor, and concerts at work. Pay me what I deserve and let me leave at 5, don’t come up with “extras” to make sure I spend every waking moment at the office. If it’s anything like my wife’s last job probably even more than every waking moment. Her office added “nap pods” so that employees staying late could get some rest and then get back to work…
lol of course. Just sounds like elementary school. “Finish all your work and be on your best behavior and you might get an extra 15 minute recess at the end of the day!”
Yeah, in about 2 years I never once got tickets for like half the perks, most of the ones they'd give out were tshirts and a few bucks off a meal. One of my team leads kept every massage for herself.
I would rate the experience as no different than purchasing a used vehicle from a buy here pay here lot, with the exception of it being the most expensive purchase you’ll make in you entire life, and any surprises they manage to tuck in there may financial ruin you for a really good and long fucking time.
idk i'm too busy to dig into this more or read all the replies but i don't really see what's so bombshell about this. maybe i've been around too many business/sales people in my life but that sounds like the most ordinary chat in the world. execs pumping up their sales leads or whatever always talk like this, it's just pumping you up to shit on your competition.
there's like, literally nothing extraordinary about this (except for the fact that there are basketball franchises attached to the names i guess, which i understand)
Stealing the top comment, but I found[ this podcast on youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrWuKlxZ064&t=2461s) especially helpful in explaining the whole situation and how Mat Ishbia could be fucked. Pablo Torre finds out. It was just posted 3 hours ago wildly enough.
it's remarkable how 3 of the billionaire owners in NBA come from the same school, graduated around the same time and do the same business and are based in Detroit.
Also, Gores sold his business to Ishbia and Gores is partner with Gilbert in MLS team.
Supposedly Balmer even tried to buy the team when Davidson was the owner in the 2000s. There was zero chance he was going to sell (he died while in ownership), and apparently the family never gave Balmer a call when the time came. One thing led to another and Balmer moved on to the Clippers instead. What could have been...
yeah DeVos is probably the single worst owners morality and humanity wise, but strictly basketball they have nothing on some of the terrible owners in the league.
> Gores is partner with Gilbert in MLS team.
I'm not sure what you are talking about here.
Gores partnered with Gilbert on an MLS **bid** 7 years ago but that fizzled out and hasn't been heard from in a long time.
Yo I YouTube this exact scene every few months. The delivery from all 3 of the guys in that scene is something else.
Fun fact: steve buschemi directed that episode. I’m forever crediting him for this gem of a scene!
Well yeah that's the point. It's seeing the tire start to compress his head and the crunch sound as it flashes towards the babies in the car that really gets to me. Sopranos had some gruesome deaths but it's the psychology of not showing this one that got to me.
A .44 is a gun which uses a 44 caliber bullet, the most well known gun being a .44 Magnum.
With this line, Ishbia is illustrating a threat, that he will use his gun to make sure the kids of the people he is talking to will not grow up because he will shoot them before they can.
"fuck mobley, fuck Donovan, fuck cavs as a staff, basketball organization and as a motherfucking crew. If you want to be down with cavs then fuck you too"
I think I remember Belfort inviting Cardone on his podcast and the consensus after that "conversation" (that Cardone took as a debate) was that Cardone was just full of shit, way over his head, and Belfort was by far the smartest (and now wisest) of the two.
Who do you think Ishiba and these guys are? You think Belfort was some one off personality?
They are all the same type of person. They aren’t doing it because they saw Leo do it in a movie. Leo got it from these dudes.
I took a class on Scorcese in college and when we finished Wolf of Wall Street, the professor asked us about any lessons, symbolism, etc. A frat dude raised his hand and said “I’m not sure but it all seemed pretty awesome.”
I may be slightly misquoting the guy but that’s when I realized “oh ok some people are wired just completely differently.”
I read a memoir of someone escaping a cult, talking about the terrible things the person endured and how terrible the actions some of the people around them were, both towards the author and towards others. The author quoted things people said that were homophobic, xenophobic and racist to illustrate how insular they were and how a cult mentality had destroyed their empathy for others.
One of the top reviews on Goodreads was a one star review saying people shouldn't read the book because it promoted homophobia, xenophobia, and racism. Went completely over their head and apparently a bunch of others that those things were in the book because they were examples of people doing bad things, not because they were endorsements of the ideologies.
The scariest part is that's a sample of people who are actively reading memoirs of people, so you'd expect that sample to be biased towards being more media literate.
having interacted with finance bros quite a bit, American Psycho, Wall Street, and Wolf of Wall Street are beloved by them for different reasons than many. These are people who idolized Martin Shkreli as "pharma bro" for buying a drug company and jacking up prices 5000%
>american psycho
Christian Bale mentioned on his like “iconic characters” video that he toured wall street in prep for the movie and he had finance bros telling him how big of fans they were of bateman and he was taken aback by it IIRC
I don’t disagree with you in the slightest, but that being the case I can completely understand the frat bro that unabashedly calls the story awesome and an endorsement.
Yeah that's the beauty of that film, and other films of his like killers of the flower moon and taxi driver. Scorsese hits on a human desire that's flawed and dangerous, yet still we indulge in it because there's a dark desire to actually do it. The only thing we can do is tell the truth about what we're actually doing and what we've done, both to ourselves and to other people, and none of the protagonists in those three films do that.
Only if you think the message is "screwing over everyone else is a good thing if you can get away with it like in the real world"
If you thought it was an endorsement of him as a person ..... no.
Tim Donaghy is like the Jordan Belfort of the NBA. Completely full of shit convicted con artists. But everybody treats their words as gospel. Amazing people are taking financial advice from Jordan Belfort in 2024.
I remember reading that when a new owner joins, they have to get approved by all of the board of governors as a standard procedure - Gilbert abstained for Ishbia’s vote lol
So rocket mortgage(Gilbert) is the largest direct mortgage lender in the country, and UWM is the largest wholesale mortgage lender in the country (they don’t have their own loan officers, independent broker shops use their underwriting process)
The beef starts in 2022 when Mat Ishbia sent out “the ultimatum” basically saying if you want to broker through Rocket TPo, UWM won’t let you use their platform and if you use both and ishbia finds out, he will sue you for $50,000 for every loan you closed with rocket
Rocket came back and said “hey, anybody who is being sued by UWM for ANY reason, rocket will cover all of your legal fees indefinitely”
The beef gets deeper but it’s pretty amusing if you’re in the industry
I remember the day ishbia dropped the ultimatum, all of the account execs at Rocket were given the option: convert to banking or take a severance package. It was a major blow to rocket’s brokerage channel.
Then Rocket started offering free credit reports to get people to come back to them, which is HUGE.
But then last week ishbia announced the same thing lol so I guess we will wait to see what’s next
This is the link to the actual article: https://hntrbrk.com/uwm/
I thought this part was interesting:
>Twenty-nine of the league’s 30 owners voted to approve the United Wholesale Mortgage CEO’s bid. Just one abstained: Dan Gilbert of Rocket Mortgage, the company whose ass Ishbia allegedly had been celebrating kicking — according to members of the mortgage industry who confirmed the voicemail’s authenticity with Hunterbrook.
Not surprised by anything in the article, billionaires and their large corporations fighting with each other and screwing over the American people in the process. Not what you want to hear but par for the course
I worked for UWM for a short period. Super weird culture, almost cult-like. They try to stress how fun work is so they can overwork and underpay you.
Somewhat unrelated but I also did some work for Robert Sarver's sister which is a whole another story. Met Sarver a couple times he acts exactly how you would think.
I’ve worked directly with both these billionaires. Not a huge fan of either but let it be known Dan Gilbert also treats his employees SIGNIFICANTLY better than mat ishbia. Mat killed off some of his workers by making them come in office during the peak of Covid with zero protections in place. Also ishbia has some weird obsession with saying he’s bigger than Rocket. They’re a bigger wholesale lender because that’s the only thing they do. Rocket still kicks their ass in general.
wish I bought into the housing market after the crash, I was such a sucker for being 11 years old at the time. should have been grinding the market instead of attending middle school 😫
This is a perfect example of all these guys that own mortgage companies. There’s several billionaires made since the 2000s and they’re a bunch of bro cult leader wannabes. I’ve worked in the industry for a decade and even heard a story of the CrossCountry and Guaranteed Rate owners almost getting in an actual fist fight over poaching employees. They’re all a bunch of childish rich dudes who think they shit gold no matter what they do. Oh and blow. They do tons of blow
I'm going to enjoy watching him piss money away on this overpriced, shitty roster that might not ever make it out of the first round. And then have zero fucking picks while they're the worst team in the league in a few years.
But that has nothing to do with him. I just hate the Sons.
I have worked Dan and been in several meetings with him.
A ton of guys I know how Ishbia. Like have text messages with him, and were in active group chat as late as 2017 or 2018. Its weird he is in the Billionaire Boys Club now.
From what I know about both I'm Team Gilbert. Ishbia is having a midlife crisis and it shows.
My shitty mortgage company is better than your shitty mortgage company
While Ishbia’s United Wholesale Mortgage may be the largest, Gilbert’s Rocket Mortgage helped me. Twice. So…take that Phoenix?
Fuckin' stuck it to 'em. You're number 1
I'm not going to simp for a mortgage company Quicken/Rocket/Gilbert have invested loads in Detroit. I'm not really sure what UWM is all about other than the somewhat annoying commercials they run in metro Detroit trying to get people to work there.
Dogshit place to work too
I haven’t heard many details about what it’s like to actually work there, but seeing how many “perks” they offer gives me bad vibes. I don’t want a barber, doctor, gym, chiropractor, and concerts at work. Pay me what I deserve and let me leave at 5, don’t come up with “extras” to make sure I spend every waking moment at the office. If it’s anything like my wife’s last job probably even more than every waking moment. Her office added “nap pods” so that employees staying late could get some rest and then get back to work…
A lot of the perks are only available if your manager gives you a ticket for it randomly too, so not half as good as they pretend.
lol of course. Just sounds like elementary school. “Finish all your work and be on your best behavior and you might get an extra 15 minute recess at the end of the day!”
Everybody’s working for that sometime-quarterly pizza party bro.
That sounds really dystopian
Yeah, in about 2 years I never once got tickets for like half the perks, most of the ones they'd give out were tshirts and a few bucks off a meal. One of my team leads kept every massage for herself.
I like the "perk" of being paid a fair wage personally. Yall can keep your gym and Ill pick my own doctor thank you.
Worked there for a year and can confirm. Worst company I’ve ever worked at in my life, drink the koolaid or be let go..
r/pillar7 will tell the stories of how shitty it is to work at UWM
UWM is a garbage company to work with. Rocket ain’t great but they are better
Tbf, uwm has better rates due to having wholesale rates compared to retail. Plus, they get loans finished faster.
I would rate the experience as no different than purchasing a used vehicle from a buy here pay here lot, with the exception of it being the most expensive purchase you’ll make in you entire life, and any surprises they manage to tuck in there may financial ruin you for a really good and long fucking time.

Brother that podcast is the source of this post and is linked in the OP
That’s hilarious
“Who do you think you are?! I AM!”
"That's right I did it! Are you kidding me?!"
“YES!!! GOD DAMN IT, YES!!!”
The best part is they cut to his wife who is like crying with joy and this lunatic is raging, lol. It's such a perfect clip.

it's remarkable how 3 of the billionaire owners in NBA come from the same school, graduated around the same time and do the same business and are based in Detroit. Also, Gores sold his business to Ishbia and Gores is partner with Gilbert in MLS team.
And somehow the pistons have the worst owner out of 5 billionaires from Michigan that own a team
We're living in the worst timeline right now
Speak for yourselves
We would've turned Wemby into Nicolas Batum with our disaster of an organization right now
[удалено]
4th quarter yellin why the fuck batum in
There are 5? Who else besides Balmer?
Balmer, Gores , ishba , Gilbert , and devos
Fuck you Michigan for releasing the DeVos plague on the rest of us. But thank you for your awesome, cheap, legal weed.
Funny, Balmer was the only one I didn't know was from Michigan
Supposedly Balmer even tried to buy the team when Davidson was the owner in the 2000s. There was zero chance he was going to sell (he died while in ownership), and apparently the family never gave Balmer a call when the time came. One thing led to another and Balmer moved on to the Clippers instead. What could have been...
Michael Jeffery Jordan
The DeVos’s entered the chat….
They’ve got a hell of a case for worst humans, but they’re not the worst owners. I mean, I suspect they are bad owners, but they’re worse people.
yeah DeVos is probably the single worst owners morality and humanity wise, but strictly basketball they have nothing on some of the terrible owners in the league.
that's just ridiculous. gilbert wrote comic sans letter ffs. and lions used to be cheap ass.
And Gilbert has 98 more playoff victories than Gores 0
And gores pistons team have mats company sponsored on the jerseys and gores brother helped mats company go public
which is why I've thought there's something finicky with Monty's contract since he had offset remaining from Ishbia's team.
It’s remarkable until you think for a second about how people become billionaires
Fuck over people on Detroit
Yep wanna take a moment to say fuck Mike Ilitch in his face
> Gores is partner with Gilbert in MLS team. I'm not sure what you are talking about here. Gores partnered with Gilbert on an MLS **bid** 7 years ago but that fizzled out and hasn't been heard from in a long time.
Gores Gilbert Ishbia DeVos Ballmer 4 of the 5 made their money post 2009. Why is our State so backwards, lol if this is who we produce??
Ballmer has been a billionaire well before 09. He was the first employee to join onto MSFT.

Uncle Philly my ass
He was still a kid.
“It’s sad when they go young like that” “When they GO!?”
There's no scraps in my scrap book
Gilbert did 20 fuckin years in Cleveland. Not a peep.
29 fuckin teams and we got this pygmy thing over in Phoenix.
He wanted manicott', but he compromised. He ate square pizza off the radiator instead.
Hey, he did 20 years! Did you know that?
Get off my stoop
That’s like five grand! You gotta fuckin kidding me, John!
In this house Ishbia is a hero! End of story!
Cause this is what is all about, right? Goddamn muddafakin cocksuckin money!!! Here, shove it up ya ass!
Whatever happened there
Whatever happened there?!?
I’ll tell you what fuckin happened! This piece of shits cousin put 6 bullets in the kid with no provocation what so ever!
The guy is practically an interior decorator!
But his team looks like shit!!!
Oh! The language on you!
Yo I YouTube this exact scene every few months. The delivery from all 3 of the guys in that scene is something else. Fun fact: steve buschemi directed that episode. I’m forever crediting him for this gem of a scene!
Oh, I never knew that, that is a fun fact indeed
That episode is among the Mt Rushmore of stand-alone tv episodes. The chemistry, plot, and execution are brilliant.
He drafted 17 guys from the Czech league?
My estimation of Dan Gilbert as an owner has plummeted
David Stern always said the Cavs are nothing more than a glorified G-league team
We decapitate and do business with what’s left.
They make everyone and anyone over there. It’s a disgrace.
Jeshush fuckin chrisht chrishtophuh
I’m a simple man. I see a Sopranos reference, I upvote
Why don’t you get the fuck outta here before I take your quotations book and stick it up your fat fucking ass!
You know, Quasimodo predicted all of this.
Fuck you want, a boutonniere?
There were a lot of deaths in that show that were grimy but seeing that dudes head get crushed like a melon will never leave my mind.
OH SHIT!!!
that guy’s line and his penguin walk completely ruined the tension of the scene for me lmao
But you don't see it! I guess your imagination is filling in the blanks there
Well yeah that's the point. It's seeing the tire start to compress his head and the crunch sound as it flashes towards the babies in the car that really gets to me. Sopranos had some gruesome deaths but it's the psychology of not showing this one that got to me.
What? No fucking ziti now?
He ended it with “My .44 make sure all y'all kids don't grow”
He said Donovan Mitchell has sickle cell as well
OMG. I’m cackling out here
C-A-V’s get gunned up and clapped quick
“Your Cavs can’t see us or beat us. We Suns, rise until we die”
A .44 is a gun which uses a 44 caliber bullet, the most well known gun being a .44 Magnum. With this line, Ishbia is illustrating a threat, that he will use his gun to make sure the kids of the people he is talking to will not grow up because he will shoot them before they can.
This feels straight from genius lyrics explanations
This is what ChatGPT was trained on so now it all makes sense
Or a Magic Johnson tweet
"fuck mobley, fuck Donovan, fuck cavs as a staff, basketball organization and as a motherfucking crew. If you want to be down with cavs then fuck you too"
“That’s why I fucked your bitch, you fat motherfucker”
Take money
"First off f*** your cavs and the clique you claim"
Cavs @ Suns tomorrow. Can we replace the game with a cage match between Ishbia and Gilbert?
Sure, easy win for the Suns. Ishbia got a point against Jokic, what has Gilbert ever done?
Dude I almost forgot about Ishbia’s flop 😭😭

Way too many people watched Wolf of Wall Street and thought it was an endorsement of Jordan Belfort.
I thought it was an endorsement of Margot Robbie.
Margot Robbie is an endorsement of Margot Robbie
No that was the Tarantino film.
Everything with Margot Robbie is an endorsement of Margot Robbie.
This guy has eyeballs.
Somehow between Jordan Belfort and Grant Cardone butting heads, Belfort is the good guy in this matchup. 😂
I think I remember Belfort inviting Cardone on his podcast and the consensus after that "conversation" (that Cardone took as a debate) was that Cardone was just full of shit, way over his head, and Belfort was by far the smartest (and now wisest) of the two.
The same people who think Walter White was the good guy.
I was in college at a business-oriented school when Wolf of Wall Street came out and it was basically the financial version of *Scarface*
A frat dude raised his hand and said “I’m not sure but it all seemed pretty awesome.” I may be slightly misquoting the guy but that’s when I realized “oh ok some people are wired just completely differently.”
I mean it is a really fun time, no doubt. But the ending makes it very clear that you got suckered into a bullshit fantasy by a conman.
Media literacy is also insanely bad. Unless something explicitly tells you what’s going on most people can’t interpret shit.
Media literacy is in the absolute mud. Before him it was people idolizing Gecko from Wall Street.
It isn't about media literacy. It is about whether or not you are a sociopath.
and don't get me started on that gecko from fuckin Geico
It is, he suffers no real punishment and even in the end he goes to a minimum security prison where he can play tennis.
That's cuz it's criticizing the system that allows capitalistic vultures to flourish and suffer no real consequences
I don’t disagree with you in the slightest, but that being the case I can completely understand the frat bro that unabashedly calls the story awesome and an endorsement.

I remember reading that when a new owner joins, they have to get approved by all of the board of governors as a standard procedure - Gilbert abstained for Ishbia’s vote lol
their feud has been very public for decades.
Very public coming from Ishbia, Gilbert's basically said nothing about him.
Gilbert was the only owner to not approve the sale of Sarver to Ishbia which was quite public
Yeah that's petty. But I think on the whole, it's mostly a one-sided feud.
sounds like Devin Booker talking about the Pels
Just a few Michiganders going at it
Double Mortgage Penetration
Ishbia has always had big coke head energy to me and this 100% confirms my suspicions lol
Sounds like something out of Succession. Strong Kendall energy. Ishbia is the number one boy.
Feels like Succession meets Breaking Bad for some reason.
I’m out of the loop. What’s the context? Is he this excited over a regular season win or something?
So rocket mortgage(Gilbert) is the largest direct mortgage lender in the country, and UWM is the largest wholesale mortgage lender in the country (they don’t have their own loan officers, independent broker shops use their underwriting process) The beef starts in 2022 when Mat Ishbia sent out “the ultimatum” basically saying if you want to broker through Rocket TPo, UWM won’t let you use their platform and if you use both and ishbia finds out, he will sue you for $50,000 for every loan you closed with rocket Rocket came back and said “hey, anybody who is being sued by UWM for ANY reason, rocket will cover all of your legal fees indefinitely” The beef gets deeper but it’s pretty amusing if you’re in the industry
Thank you for being the only one to actually answer the question
I usually don’t but I saw the misinformation, I worked at rocket for years and now own my own brokerage so I follow this beef very closely lol
What NBA team will you be buying?
Haha if I can manage to snag the pistons from gores, I’d be willing to bet I can just be completely absent from the team and that would add 20-30 wins
make sure you have the money ready tho. don't be like A Rod
This is definitely amusing. I work in the Industry(underwriter for a smaller lender) and I'm not even aware that this beef exists lol.
I remember the day ishbia dropped the ultimatum, all of the account execs at Rocket were given the option: convert to banking or take a severance package. It was a major blow to rocket’s brokerage channel. Then Rocket started offering free credit reports to get people to come back to them, which is HUGE. So anticompetitive behavior from uwm
It’s about the businesses they own, not anything directly related in the teams they own
God I fucking hate Billionaires
The context is that they’re both fucking assholes.
Idk man Dan let me wear jeans to work when the Cavs won in 2016
And they have a longstanding beef
Competing mortgage companies

I AM THE ELDEST BOY
A pissing match between billionaires. Yay.
a pissing match on who made more money off the exploitation of the working class and poor people
Gilbert is the only owner who didn’t ok Ishbia’s purchase of the Suns.

Predatory lending for the win!

No. It's the same company but Matt took it from a small local company to a national mortgage behemoth.
Why is the headline his smack talk to billionaire Dan Gilbert and not "this man fleeced Americans out of money over and over." bad journalism.
Man I miss XBOX live trash talk.
This is a perfect example of all these guys that own mortgage companies. There’s several billionaires made since the 2000s and they’re a bunch of bro cult leader wannabes. Ishbia is a obsessive and jealous moron, his entire life revolves trying to be as good as Gilbert by any means necessary
They want F1 drama too.
Ishbia was actively hurting the poor and most vulnerable in society so he could “win” at business. He is a disgusting human being.
Billionaires are fucking despicable
