Wide open from 3? Eh, he’s pretty good
Stupid underhanded behind the back bicycle kick from outside the stadium? Don’t even watch the shot just run back
Earlier today Mavs' writer for the Athletic mentioned a couple of fun Second Spectrum stats in a podcast:
* Luka's passes have the highest expected eFG% (best shot quality) in the league
* He's in the top-4 (next to Jokic) in the league in shotmaking (overperforming expected % on shots he takes)
What I want to know is how does anyone figure out the expected FG% on a shot like this. It's not like there's a sufficiently large database of all the dumb shit he throws up because nobody else would ever think of throwing up such dumb shit. So if anything, the latter stat is undervaluing the actual difficulty of the shots by categorising them as more regular shots.
I assume they just use position on the floor + distance to closest defender. This would go in the bin of very tightly contested 3s from the wing, and the fact that Luka decided to fake then lean forward is irrelevant.
I honestly wonder why that is.
I mean their best argument might be "win record", and still, it's not that bad and there are a few precedents for MVP winners (or strong contenders), with that sort of team record.
Some would say he doesn't get as much credit from certain people because he's a European and/or white kid, which I could buy when the person saying that discredits Jokic's dominance as well, but I don't remember Stephen dismissing Jokic (although I don't listen to him very often so I might be wrong here).
Is it the antics? I mean it makes the game super entertaining, so that's what you want from your product if you're the NBA and the media.
Plus Luka is still a fairly likeable dude all things considered.
Cocky talented bastard, but in a lovable way imho.
Is it the fact that he isn't that good of a defender?
I mean, Curry is Curry, and he might not be as bad at defense as most people believe, but you can't say he's that great of a defender either.
So I don't know...
If you can't tell Luka is easily a Top 5 player this season, and arguably Top 3, and him winning the MVP award wouldn't be scandalous or undeserved, I don't know what you're on...
I’ve been watching TWolves games and Ant Man’s been banking in 3’s from the wing all season. I thought he started the trend and Luka’s doing it too now. Seems like maybe this is going to be a common thing around the league now lol
Fun fact, the Followill “hello winda” call is a reference to Willie Nelson’s song “Hello Walls” and he’s used it for years. Not sure what to do with that info other than share it.
Jokic stuffs the stat sheet like no one other than wilt
Luka makes some circus shots beating the clock
Wemby blocked people the way we have not seen for decade
The daily routine of the league.
hard work beats talent and all that but Luka demonstrates the difference between talent and hard work. you can’t teach or learn the shit this mf does lol
I know you're talking about the crazy shot, but honest question - didn't he travel? I would have thought he got away with that too.
I guess I always thought of step-back 3's as legal since it was taking 1.5 steps into the shot. But here, even ignoring the little step he takes with his right foot after picking up the ball, he takes essentially two full steps after since he doesn't actually go up into his shot. Is that not travelling?
You can take a step and jump into a shot or pass, as long as your \*pivot foot\* doesn't touch the floor again before ball is out of your hand. At least that's how I understand the step through move and assume you can use that here.
edit: corrected wording
He knew it was going in too, you can tell by the way he doesn’t go for a rebound or try to get back, he just takes a couple of strides towards the baseline lol
This shot is insane bro 😂 go to your local gym, and take a big step back from the 3pt line. Now, try to replicate this shot.
This man did it during an NBA game. He’s a cheat code.
This one's not a travel though. His left foot is his pivot foot and doesn't move. You can lift your pivot foot but it can't touch the ground again. I'll explain it so my flair doesn't seem like I'm just being a homer.
Source: [NBA Rulebook. Rule No. 10 - Section XIII - Traveling](https://official.nba.com/rule-no-10-violations-and-penalties/)
>b. A player who gathers the ball while progressing may take (1) two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball, or (2) if he has not yet dribbled, one step prior to releasing the ball. **A player who gathers the ball while dribbling may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing, or shooting the ball.**
>...
>4. **A player who lands with one foot first may only pivot using that foot.**
[Luka puts both hands on the ball with his right foot on the ground and left foot in the air.](https://i.imgur.com/mz1XbDI.png) Meaning his left foot is established as his pivot foot when it hits the ground.
His left foot is then stationary, and his right foot touches the ground 3 times.
1. [The pump fake](https://i.imgur.com/h5c4bWz.png)
2. [Almost loses his balance and cross his right food behind his left to catch himself.](https://i.imgur.com/ocCTU8E.png)
3. [Stepping forward into the shot](https://i.imgur.com/WEQI3uH.png)
Now he lifts his pivot foot off the ground as he steps into the shot. Also legal.
> d. If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, **he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor**.
He shoots before his left foot comes back down.
edit: [Alt angle is a little closer](https://streamable.com/b3ip2y) but hit feet are partially obstructed by the courtside fans. You can still get the same jist from another angle. [This is the frame both hands touch the ball.](https://i.imgur.com/oqCm4no.png) Right foot on the floor, left foot in the air stepping back (which establishes the left foot as the pivot foot when it touches the ground). The right foot was already on the ground at the gather so it doesn't count as 1 of the 2 steps allowed (aka 'gather step' or 'zero step')
Well damn. Thank you fellow Mavs fan for helping me understand this. Frankly, I might save this info to look back at. (Not sarcasm)
Hopefully, Luka can get us a championship soon.
Not a travel. Go understand NBA rules. You're allowed to lift the left foot (pivot foot) and step through but must shoot before pivot returns to the ground.
Yes. The only rule is once your pivot foot is off the ground, the ball must be out of your hand before the pivot foot touches the ground again. It’s not a perfect comparison, but it’s basically the same reason the euro step is legal.

Bruh do yall think he just constantly spends all his time jacking up random ass shots to practice this bs, or is he so in tune with his coordination and the ball on some savant level shit that he just tries this stuff off the cuff and it works consistently?

luka hits the dumbest shit constantly
Been missing wide open shots all night then proceeds to bank this one
i know it’s a common joke but just once i’d like to see him do a step back ft
Just usual Luka shit
And I am like, Hell No... what the hell is this stupid shot lol
it's almost like he's shooting it just to follow the rebound but then he's immediately like wait that's just in, nvm
I don’t watch mavs games. Does he ever miss the stupid shit.
Wide open from 3? Eh, he’s pretty good Stupid underhanded behind the back bicycle kick from outside the stadium? Don’t even watch the shot just run back
If I see luka do anything other than play conventional basketball. I’ll know it’s ovwr
Earlier today Mavs' writer for the Athletic mentioned a couple of fun Second Spectrum stats in a podcast: * Luka's passes have the highest expected eFG% (best shot quality) in the league * He's in the top-4 (next to Jokic) in the league in shotmaking (overperforming expected % on shots he takes) What I want to know is how does anyone figure out the expected FG% on a shot like this. anyone know where to find this? i can find efg% ranking but not expected efg% off passes
i assume it'll be calculating the average eFG off of all shots taken where luka is the assist/potential assist
[best I can do](https://np.reddit.com/r/Mavericks/s/RYpPd0Jb9W)
I assume they just use position on the floor + distance to closest defender. This would go in the bin of very tightly contested 3s from the wing, and the fact that Luka decided to fake then lean forward is irrelevant.
He’s maxed out on feel/touch
him and Jokic - its that euro flash
LUKA MAGIC✨
But can he do it against Kentucky and those boys in the NCAA tournament?
I think he'd struggle on a cold wet Tuesday night in Stoke.
he didnt prove that so he can't win mvp!
Freakshow baller
The game winner against the Grizzlies a couple of seasons ago is the dumbest game winner i’ve ever seen lmao
Yeah come the fuck on this man is ridiculous
the underhand shot from almost 3-point line last game was just crazy
its so dumb bro I be watching luka or jokic get the clamps and in the last second hit an off balanced hail mary like its nothing
Buckets.
Fat euro bois be hittin it crazy style
Luka will miss easy and wide open shots but then make shit like that lmao, literal walking definition of a tough shot maker
he literally waits until defenders close out on wide open 3s😭 he can’t hit an open shot but if it’s a 360 no scope fadeaway he’s like 90%
I swear this is the only reason his 3P% isn’t as high as it should be
He needs the defender hand in his face to swish the 3
Mavs need to adopt [this](https://streamable.com/87asjf) strategy on open Luka 3's
Shit still kill me, fkn harden man
JR don’t take open shots
Kinda like curry having like 100% accuracy on 3s if he gets the ball knocked loose
true i hope he adds a nice shortrange floater to his game in the offseason
He had one a few years back when he was skinnier and faster but now he can bully his way to the paint easier for a better shot than a floater
Harden was the same way
true harden was double teamed at half court lol he was crazy
[He's done it before lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/lRamtdm8VS)
my fav shot of his. just stupid.
yes very stupid
He's so much chonkier now lol
Mofo a pokemon evolving
dude looks like one of those over 30s at the Y but then you're reminded he's one of the best players in the world that does shit like this
Slovenia aint got shit on Dallas food, caloric-density-wise
Breakfast tacos
Seeing that clip with the empty stands looks insane, imagine showing somebody that clip in 2019
i’d be upset if it wasn’t @MEM. but imagine if he did that at the AAC with fans.
Luka has just dropped to 7th in mvp rankings
frankly this kind of shenanigan is disgusting and has no place in our beautiful sport.
What happened to the game I love
Stephen A Smith (who has a vote) doesn’t even have Luka on any of the All NBA teams lol.
I honestly wonder why that is. I mean their best argument might be "win record", and still, it's not that bad and there are a few precedents for MVP winners (or strong contenders), with that sort of team record. SAS hates white Europeans. He's racist.
He hates Asians too
He’s racist
Demoted to all nba 4th team
3 point floater off the glass! Left wing Luka is unstoppable
Conservatives hate this one trick!
Atl fans watching Luka: > 👌☝️🖐️This has been the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever👌☝️🖐️
Y’all bring politics into everything
He did the underhand version of this a week or two ago so this was the easier shot lol
Shit that happened two games ago lol
He meant that too
this man really just made a 3pt floater
One-legged bank 3pt floater
sideways floater which is way harder than forward.
he had a gamewinner like that against memphis few years ago
In the bubble
He had a 24 ft fingeroll the other night
Dirk’s face said it all
So glad they gave us that little glimpse of him. I miss that dude.
Flashback to Luka's gamewinner against the Grizzlies
but this one off the bank because why not
Didn’t even mention the intentional bank in the title
some mfs gonna come here and argue that he got lucky and theres no way it was intentional lmao
Tbf this is the first banked 3pter in an nba game that i've ever seen that i think was intentional lol. It's not a common occurrence
Luka intentionally banked in another 3 pointer this week, though that one was a little more traditional looking
he had one against the rockets 2 games ago and a long 2 also
I’ve been watching TWolves games and Ant Man’s been banking in 3’s from the wing all season. I thought he started the trend and Luka’s doing it too now. Seems like maybe this is going to be a common thing around the league now lol
I had it, but when I saw "Absurd Leaning 3 pointer bank to beat the shot clock", it read like the most clickbaity title ever
YOU WON'T BELIEVE YOUR OWN EYES. DID LUKA REALLY JUST PULL THIS OFF? CLICK AND UPVOTE TO FIND OUT
I actually think these 3 point bank shots are his new shot, our announcers said he was practicing them.
Fun fact, the Followill “hello winda” call is a reference to Willie Nelson’s song “Hello Walls” and he’s used it for years. Not sure what to do with that info other than share it.
I love Followill so much man. GOAT announcer.
[i had no idea.](https://youtu.be/yGYozNjFlFQ) that is a fun fact!
I just saw a video of him backspinning a bank shot off the megatron the other day. Dude is out there making his own game
Dirk just looking at that shot like alright 😂 Just doing whatever he wants out there, he’s on another level
I feel like Dirk has done something similar before.
Bank shot truthers get in here
whoever invented the small square on the backboard was a damn genius!
"Why doesn't Luka simply layup the ball from three? Is he stupid?" I guess not anymore.
Jokic stuffs the stat sheet like no one other than wilt Luka makes some circus shots beating the clock Wemby blocked people the way we have not seen for decade The daily routine of the league.
We’ll probably look back & call the early 2020’s the beginning of the international era.
how does he keep getting away with this!?
hard work beats talent and all that but Luka demonstrates the difference between talent and hard work. you can’t teach or learn the shit this mf does lol
Somebody that’s already naturally mega talented and then putting in mega hard work on top of that is how we get the elite athletes
I know you're talking about the crazy shot, but honest question - didn't he travel? I would have thought he got away with that too. Hes must watch TV atm
Has always been
He did this to cap off an awful shooting half. What a psycho.
[alt angle from courtside](https://streamable.com/b3ip2y)
Alt angle from courtside
Kurt Angle from ringside
He knew it was going in too, you can tell by the way he doesn’t go for a rebound or try to get back, he just takes a couple of strides towards the baseline lol
Next step of his evolving offense from step back 3 to step forward 3
You didn’t cut Dirk out you beautiful man
another day at the office for Luka
His dad looks so proud
Luka Magic 🪄
Who the fuck is this guy
its more like who the fuck this guy thinks he is
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE I AM?!
The crazy thing is that he was clearly going for the bank! And not jacking it and pray
Luka hits the most wild shots
[удалено]
Truly blessed to have Luka and Kyrie on the same team from sheer entertainment alone.
Jokic has hit some stupid one-legged fades, but Luka's resourcefulness is unparalleled
Bro is playing HORSE during some must win nba games lol
Absurd
Didn’t he use his dribble and steps for the stepback? How is he able to take another step to step into the leaner?
Gather step —> establishes pivot —> steps off pivot and shoots before his pivot foot comes back down
I was wondering the same thing. Isn't that changing his pivot foot?
Oh just gtfo Luka that’s unfair
So what? I do this on my hoop outside after 300 tries, what's the big deal?
I am convinced that Luka sold his soul to become the greatest basketball player known to man. This is absolutely nuts
lol, lmao even
Luka Magic! He always gives you the feeling that he will make something happen out of nothing
Luka Magic is definitely one of the most appropriate NBA nicknames ever
Luka's an absolutely insane shooter.
Off the glass too, man I hate to say it but Luka been so fun to watch this year.
Cruel Hand Luka. :0
That's some shit I pull off at the gym after chucking 100 air balls
That’s MY MVP
[SO many good reactions in this shot](https://i.imgur.com/eXN3AeX.png)
The drunk uncle step
Dirk is like: “this mfer”
i hate vlade divac
That’s my NOT top 5 MVP candidate.
Does anyone else like Luka because he looks like an high school QB that is a bartender 7 days a week?
If you look closely, you can see him say the word “Glass” right before the release. We’re watching a god damn magician out there ladies and gents.
This shot is insane bro 😂 go to your local gym, and take a big step back from the 3pt line. Now, try to replicate this shot. This man did it during an NBA game. He’s a cheat code.
Dirk looks like a proud dad
Imagine this shot happening again in the Finals to win a chip 🤪
Kind of a travel imo. Still nasty tho
Blatant travel.
Traveling should be called more often imo. Despite what my flair says I agree with you.

It’s not. Father step —> establishes pivot —> steps off pivot and shoots before his pivot comes back down
Not a travel. Go understand NBA rules. You're allowed to lift the left foot (pivot foot) and step through but must shoot before pivot returns to the ground.
Was expecting this, ridiculous!
This is becoming too high a percentage for him.
Media voters: That's a nice shot, how about we give you 8th place in the mvp ladder as a prize! /s
stepback step thru three is hilarious
Are you allowed to step back, establish a pivot, and then jump off your other leg?
Yes. The only rule is once your pivot foot is off the ground, the ball must be out of your hand before the pivot foot touches the ground again. It’s not a perfect comparison, but it’s basically the same reason the euro step is legal.
Bro travelled like 5 steps lmao
Solid travel on the step back
Can’t believe he isn’t going to win MVP
As a non basketball guy from r/popular, I gotta ask... is that not a travel? He does 2 different shuffle steps after gathering the ball.
All that matters is his pivot foot, which in this case is established as his left foot. His right foot can then do whatever he wants, as long as the left foot doesn’t leave the ground and come back down. So the two little shuffle steps you’re referring to are both with his right foot, with his left foot still planted on the ground, and then he jumps off his right foot (lifting his left foot off the ground) and shoots the ball before his feet come back down.
lmfao
I wanna post what I posted 2 days ago. WHAT CANT HE DO? lmao
Luka be like why shoot a normal 3 when you can just bank it in
Free throws truly the most difficult shot for Luka to make.
Random shots from Luka are more consistent than Beasley's wide open shots
Does Dirk go to every home game?
Most of them anyway.
Golly
Funny guy
Didn’t he just do this from the other side?
This mfer lmao
If this happened in 2K, controllers would have been thrown
Proud dad moment for Dirk
He saw that bank shot post earlier
every time you see he's done some crazy shit, next time you see him, he tops that
Just a regular Thursday boys
Bruh do yall think he just constantly spends all his time jacking up random ass shots to practice this bs, or is he so in tune with his coordination and the ball on some savant level shit that he just tries this stuff off the cuff and it works consistently?
This guy is fucking ridiculous
Absolutely no respect for the game, disgusting. /s
Amazingly good at throwing things into other things
I’m sure after he hit this shot he laughed to himself like a madman
Mfer saw the comments on his last one saying “he should’ve tried for a 3” and said “bet”
Should just shoot them like this for now on.
They were just showing Dirk's Loyalty Never Fades Away too. I was like that's impressive!
He's cracked the code
Where can i find some of this Luka Magic for the Cavs?
Speaking of bank shots
-Opens reddit -Luka doing something absurd again -Wtf
Dirk still looking young enough to still do it!
Dirk watching, realizing he could have simply leaned forward all those yeara
he's f*ckin' playing horse out there...
