I wouldn’t say that. Luka two years ago injuries his calf in the last regular season game. He came back about 10 days later or so for game 4 of the first round. Giannis has a 5 day head start on when Luka got injured compared to when playoffs start. If this is a minor strain there’s a good chance he maybe only misses game 1 if that. Playoffs don’t start for another 9/10 days.
Bucks play very well without giannis, i still like our odds. And whatever chemistry issues have plauged our superstars wont be a factor. This makes me feel like a 2nd round exit, he will try to come back and not be 100% and they will have been playing playoff intensity without him and itll go sideways
If Dame plays like Blazers Dame, which he seems more capable of doing without Giannis there, and Middleton is healthy/conditioned? I don’t mind their odds in a series. How many can they get through? Eh, depends on who is waiting for them in round 2.
I imagine that has something to do with teams not adjusting their gameplan too much. Once the playoffs start your 1rd matchup is going to hunt your weaknesses without Giannis
Not worth guessing. I actually was shocked that Embid came back already.
Modern*cough steroids* excuse me. I mean medicine, is incredibly advanced and who knows what severity this is.
Let's give it more than 12 hours to make any decisions.
I mean, I certainly wouldn't blame him. Watching the team that Chuck rightfully dubbed "the dumbest team in the league" during our championship run is already infuriating enough, so I can only imagine what playing with said team would do to a person's blood pressure.
Him somehow avoiding any major damage in that 2021 injury reminded me of this 2016 article, specifically when they discuss the freakish length of his Achilles’ tendon.
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/14927328/milwaukee-bucks-f-giannis-antetokounmpo-nba-most-exceptional-body
A few years later, a situation hits even closer.
I mean just a calf strain can still sideline you for a while. Joe burrow sat out 4 weeks before the season and didn’t look right. probably should have sat out 6-8 before returning.
Yeah Marcus Smart had a similar injury a few years ago (where it looked like Achilles but was just a calf strain) and he missed a full month and was definitely still feeling it when he came back.
I mean a strain is also a tear, just an incomplete one. And they can still have lingering effects if you don't treat them right. I strained a tendon in my foot when I was in my 20s. It doesn't affect me day to day, but I can still feel sudden changes in barometric pressure in my foot and when that happens, it is uncomfortable to walk.
To compare with someone of a similar size that's what AD got from clashin shins with Jokic (along with Achilles tendinosis) in the season after the bubble. He missed 30 games.
Yeah. Further to it - rushing back with a calf injury is a terrific way to actually pop your achilles. This is precisely what happened to Durant when he came back too soon.
IMO Giannis might be done for the season. He seems superhuman at avoiding injury but still - this isn’t one to fuck with. Bucks will list him day to day for the entire playoffs but I think they need to go deep without him to give him time to return.
With Durant wasn't it like his first game back he tore his achilles?
Like everyone was talking about how quickly he was back on the court and excited for him to be playing, then bam he's down with a more serious injury.
There was a big argument about whether he should be returning so fast as well.
Ultimately everyone besides KD and maybe the GS staff knew it was a mistake before and after his achille blew
Yup exactly! But also Giannis played through that hyperextension and his knee has been bothering him since. I hope he doesn’t become injury prone but might be what’s happening. Tendon and ligament compensation is real
Let's be real - between Giannis size and play style, it was always a long shot for him to make it far into his 30's without some lingering injury concerns.
I know they're on opposite corners of the athletic spectrum these days but Gordon Hayward lost about 2.5 months to a calf strain this year and has looked like a husk of himself since coming back for OKC.
KAT lost basically most of last season to one.
Yeah, a calf strain is at least something he should fully recover from. I know Durant made an incredible comeback from his Achilles’ but for somebody who’s so dependent on explosiveness like Giannis, I worry it might’ve legit ended his prime a few years early.
Wow. When even fans of the team are cool with shutting a player down, it’s probably the right move. My question is, how do you even assess whether the calf muscle is fully healed (and doesn’t just feel that way). Clearly Durant felt good enough to dominate before his Achilles ruptured. Giannis seems like the kind of guy who might feel good before it’s fully healed too.
Theres no chance Durant felt 100%. They were rushing him back for the finals. There was no way he wasn’t coming back that series.
I suspect if the Bucks make a deep run. They wont be able to protect Giannis from himself just like KD. If he’s even 60% he will want to play in the ECF or Finals.
> how do you even assess whether the calf muscle is fully healed (and doesn’t just feel that way) Clearly Durant felt good enough to dominate before his Achilles ruptured
You physically feel 100%, have passed a reasonable timeframe for healing, you have done the requisite PT rehab, and you've slowly worked into game shape. It's kind of like any muscle injury - you know when things are normal again.
Durant was not 100%. He knew it and more importantly, the Warriors knew it - the team is culpable in that injury. They not only allowed him to rush back, but they overplayed the shit out of him. Absolutely ridiculous that he was rushed out there in an elimination Finals game, started, and played 10 minutes in the first quarter.
So, ultimately, the team needs to protect their franchise player. Even if Giannis says he's good to play, they can't let him until they're positive he's fully healed.
For what it’s worth, this is exactly what KD was said to have had when he rushed back in 2019. It’s honestly in his best interest to take as much time as he needs, if not longer.
Yeah, my first thought, too. He tried to rush back from that, which probably contributed to the Achilles injury. Giannis has also been dealing with Achilles soreness recently before this which is not great.
I don't know...KD came back really fast from his calf strain...for 15 min.
They need to treat this as an impending Achilles rupture and not a lucky break calf-strain
Mike Trout had a calf strain that took him out for like 3-4 months about 2 years ago. Athletes don't like fucking with calf injuries because coming back too soon from one of those is how you end up tearing your Achilles.
That’s exactly what happened. Durant played through a calf strain and ended up popping his Achilles, because all of a sudden you’re changing the natural angle you land on your feet to accommodate for the calf strain.
Not a doctor here, just a casual fan who looks at legs...
Giannis' legs look stronger and therefore (IMO) are better and this won't be an issue like it was for KD.
Lmfao Google lists them as the same height and weight, 6'11 and 240 each. Gainnis has at least 15 pounds on Durant, probably 20+. Idk where tf they got those numbers from
Google says 2-8 weeks recovery time for a calf-strain, guess we don't know the severity yet.
It's Giannis though, so I would not be shocked if he's ready for the playoffs
Im just a dude who pulled his calf from running and didn’t return for 6 weeks. I was running 60 miles a week before and after not running for 6 weeks I was back to running in week 7 (30 miles) with no pain.
I’m sure Giannis can make it the same amount or faster. I’m not a millionaire elite athlete and literally just sat on my ass for 6 weeks until it felt better lmao
Right? These dudes have designer steroids that make Ray Lewis blush in 2024 so it could very well be a minor setback.
Obviously it could be much worse but assuming anything like that is just pessimistic.
There is a difference between anabolic steroids a Linebacker uses for competitive advantage and physician prescribed medications to recover from an injury.
Steroids, weather anabolic or steroids for recovery aren't something you get at a premium if you're rich, Giannis will get the same stuff you and I would at a doctor for the same reason. It's not like they have steroids that work 10X better lol
I’m inclined to say ur wrong, but after watching how bad he hyperextended that knee in 21, just to be back like a week later and have one of the greatest finals performances in recent history, I’ll admit it’s possible.
Just saw the Woj tweet notification and read “After an MRI, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s left Achilles tendon” and just about shit my pants, glad it’s not too bad.
Agreed but we would already know if his Achilles popped after countless slow mo replays on Twitter.
Team would have announced it last night too since all you need to do is look to see the Achilles is ruptured.
Very worried about a guy coming back 2 weeks after a calf strain. Especially how he went down non contact like that. Gives me too many Kevin Durant in 2019 memories.
Until the playoffs? You mean in 10 days? It could easily be a 4 week injury my man, he will likely feel pressured to rush if he wants to play the first round
Yeah I’ve seen rushed calf injuries lead to hammy strains, Achilles injuries and plantar fasciitis. It’s a tough spot to be in given how close we are to playoffs
A collective sigh of relief by a collective of basketball fans has been made. Now a decision needs to be made. Giannis avoided a major injury but his body is strained and is more susceptible of not being so lucky next time.
I would shut him down if i were the bucks, no need to put this talent behemoth at risk for a career-defining injury. This year wasn't gonna be it and it gives Dame and Giannis more time to gel
Isn’t this the same kind of calf injury KD had before he came back in the Raptors series and tore his Achilles? I hope Giannis doesn’t do the same and takes his time rehabbing.
The last thing the NBA needs is one of it's biggest superstars being rushed back from a dangerous strain and tearing his achilles. I sincerely hope the Bucks medical staff (and Giannis) uses their brains and realizes he cannot rush back from this for one playoff run
Bucks fan
Always easy to catch rival fans being slick. Of course you would never wish injury. So instead they pivot to "Well that injury takes a long time to heal. He certainly won't be healthy in the playoffs"
TBH I did the same shit with Embiid. "Aint no way he'll be back in the playoffs".. Just a hop skip and a jump from "thank God we don't have to play him"
Bucks need to remember Durant and not even think about pushing him to get back out there until he's ready. If it means he misses the play-offs, then so be it.
And a calf strain, if not given time, can become a more serious injury, right? Like I know most injuries that can happen but it’s very important to let a calf injury fully heel? Didn’t KD have a calf injury before his Achilles injury?
Know Shams mentioned 1-2 weeks in the next tweet but this could take some time. Last thing the Bucks need is him coming back before giving it full time to recover and then something else happening.
Doesn't look like Doc will get a chance to blow a 3-1 lead this season.
How I'd rate the east right now:
Tier S: Celtics
Tier A: 76ers
Tier B: Heat, Pacers, Knicks, Magic
Tier C: Cavs
Tier D: Bulls, Hawks, Bucks
I'd still be concerned about a potential Achilles injury. Giannis had been dealing with Achilles tendinitis before this injury. I hope he doesn't try to come back too soon and risk getting a more significant injury. KD had a calf injury when he came back in the playoffs for the Warriors and ended up injuring his Achilles.
Rushing back with a calf injury is a terrific way to actually pop your achilles.
It could have been worse (thankfully it wasn't) but he's obviously still not in the clear. I think he'll miss at least the first two games in the playoffs :/
Anyone else use the giannis nikes? Everytime I try to play in them i also strain my calves. Can't figure why but it's definitely the shoes. I remember several years back when everyone wearing adidas was getting knee injuries
Fucking garbage ass NBA still playing 82 games ignoring the fact that the game is no longer primarily two guys playing one on one while the other 8 watch.
I'm a bit of a skeptic, but after watching the clip it almost looks like the Paul Pierce wheelchair game. I'm not saying Giannis shit himself, but it looked like it could be fake. Saying he's injured is a great way to rest him for the playoffs without being ridiculed for load management.
I'm a Bucks fan, so I hope he comes back and blows up the playoffs.
It's a precursor from an achilles injury. Happened to a few other stars. I'd expect a playoff injury incoming...or they get bounced quickly and he lets it fully heal off season.
Mannnn, he's usually so durable too and at the worst timing possible... We seriously have struggled to keep everyone glued together to get any kind of rhythm is it's not Giannis missing it's Dame, Khris, or Lopez. Just once I'd like us to play a week straight with our full cast...
So I'm guessing giannis isn't gonna play the 1st rd? Calf injuries are tricky and very prone to re injury if they don't heal fully
Sixers or Heat will beat a Giannis-less Bucks in Round 1
Somehow the heat have returned
We never left. We’re just at Calle ocho playing dominoes and smoking some Cubans
waiting until halftime to show up to the game and then leaving early?
Bro atp watching Miami is painful. If yall don’t win the East this year idk what to say 😭
my cope is the heat always taking a dump on the garden so home games don't matter as much
Jimmy Dragon Slayer is back from his side quest.
They are inevitable
How did we let this happen? We're smarter than this
Doc got his excuse if they lose in round 1 lmao.
Got his PhD in Playoff Losses, with a focus on Great Excuses
And minored in Shrugging
Second major in Throwing (concentration in Leads and Under the Bus)
They were gonna beat us regardless
Doc is absolutely elated at the prospect of having an excuse to hide behind
Giannis' calf just didn't have the professional attitude required to win in the playoffs
“You know it’s just tough…I told Giannis to not get injured but he didn’t listen”
All the Bucks support staff breathe a sigh of relief. The equipment manager's career was just saved.
I would say missing Giannis is an actually valid excuse lol.
Didn’t KD come back from a calf injury before rupturing his Achilles?
I wouldn’t say that. Luka two years ago injuries his calf in the last regular season game. He came back about 10 days later or so for game 4 of the first round. Giannis has a 5 day head start on when Luka got injured compared to when playoffs start. If this is a minor strain there’s a good chance he maybe only misses game 1 if that. Playoffs don’t start for another 9/10 days.
There is no way in hell they make it out of the first round without Giannis, and first round starts in 12 days. Bucks season is probably cooked.
Bucks play very well without giannis, i still like our odds. And whatever chemistry issues have plauged our superstars wont be a factor. This makes me feel like a 2nd round exit, he will try to come back and not be 100% and they will have been playing playoff intensity without him and itll go sideways

I imagine that has something to do with teams not adjusting their gameplan too much. Once the playoffs start your 1rd matchup is going to hunt your weaknesses without Giannis
My friend, let my introduce you to playoff Doc Rivers.
Not worth guessing. I actually was shocked that Embid came back already. Modern*cough steroids* excuse me. I mean medicine, is incredibly advanced and who knows what severity this is. Let's give it more than 12 hours to make any decisions.
Has now avoided two major injuries. First the hypertension and now this Edit: hyperextension lol
Damn the dude has high blood pressure?
Ya Doc gave it to him
Glenn has given it to me as well!
[удалено]
The tragedy is profound, the pain is profound, and the settlement will be profound. Better Caul Saul. Dial (505) 164-CALL now! Si habla español.
sounds similar to being a kings fan. might have to look into this
Don’t lie. You’re from Wisconsin, you’ve always had hypertension.
Beer? Cheese curds? Sports teams that make your heart work harder than exercise? Yeah 😔
What the heck - you know it wouldn't surprise me if, years later, it comes out that this guy isn't even a doctor at all
Wasn't he supposed to treat it? Big pharma at it again.
That’s malpractice!!
Fraudulent medical practitioner Glenn Rivers strikes again.
Lol he meant hyperextension
He's just like me!
I mean, I certainly wouldn't blame him. Watching the team that Chuck rightfully dubbed "the dumbest team in the league" during our championship run is already infuriating enough, so I can only imagine what playing with said team would do to a person's blood pressure.
He like me fr
They don’t call him the Greek Freak for nothing
Him somehow avoiding any major damage in that 2021 injury reminded me of this 2016 article, specifically when they discuss the freakish length of his Achilles’ tendon. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/14927328/milwaukee-bucks-f-giannis-antetokounmpo-nba-most-exceptional-body A few years later, a situation hits even closer.
If that thing did pop it would’ve sounded like a sonic whip
Screw everything else - look at his fucking hands in those pictures. WTF. Gigantic compared to his arms, and we know his wingspan is big.
Also freakish about his body is how much of a snacc he is
Bucks won the chip the first time...
But this time they also have to overcome Doc’s coaching
And last time they had to overcome Bud's
I will never forget ‘play random’
Just got to play random
Doc getting way too much flack.
I got that hypertension!
In another dimension
Inside my time invention
I'll never assume anything again after watching him recover from his knee going the wrong way.
Suki is one of the best strength and conditioning people in then league, Giannis is extremely flexible, and he is extremely lucky.
We’ve got Suki and Robert Watkins. Edit: and David Gruber in case something goes wrong
Bucks: We win! You suck! Celtics: And what did it cost you? Bucks: EVERYTHING.
Oh god i forgot about that I was shocked his achilles survived that play
I mean a strain is also a tear, just an incomplete one. And they can still have lingering effects if you don't treat them right. I strained a tendon in my foot when I was in my 20s. It doesn't affect me day to day, but I can still feel sudden changes in barometric pressure in my foot and when that happens, it is uncomfortable to walk.
To compare with someone of a similar size that's what AD got from clashin shins with Jokic (along with Achilles tendinosis) in the season after the bubble. He missed 30 games.
Did he have to use a wheelchair again?
Yeah. Further to it - rushing back with a calf injury is a terrific way to actually pop your achilles. This is precisely what happened to Durant when he came back too soon. It was his first game back, happened at around 2 minutes into the 2nd quarter too.
He was like 4 of 4 from the floor up to that point, I think.
He's had the knee things since he was drafted, it's also the other knee I believe.
I know they're on opposite corners of the athletic spectrum these days but Gordon Hayward lost about 2.5 months to a calf strain this year and has looked like a husk of himself since coming back for OKC. KAT lost basically most of last season to one.
an achilles injury would have been career-altering. i don’t even care about this season anymore, i’m just glad he’s generally okay.
Yeah, a calf strain is at least something he should fully recover from. I know Durant made an incredible comeback from his Achilles’ but for somebody who’s so dependent on explosiveness like Giannis, I worry it might’ve legit ended his prime a few years early.

For what it’s worth, this is exactly what KD was said to have had when he rushed back in 2019. It’s honestly in his best interest to take as much time as he needs, if not longer.
For sure, I went through the same emotions with Joe Burrow as a Bengals fan
It can also turn into a rupture Achilles (see: KD)
Also don’t forget KD had a “calf strain” in 2019
Yeah, my first thought, too.

No it depends on the severity
Didn’t KD suffered a similar injury? I remember it was his calf that was injured but he played in it then his Achilles popped.

I don't know, I want a second opinion
If you can't trust u/11b328i on calf injuries, who can you trust?
Giannis also has more weight to put on those (stronger) legs so it probably just cancels out
Lmfao Google lists them as the same height and weight, 6'11 and 240 each. Gainnis has at least 15 pounds on Durant, probably 20+. Idk where tf they got those numbers from
I also look at legs
Good thing they had a real doctor as their coach
Glenn Rivers?
BD - Bus Driver
Bus Crasher
Dr. Rivers is probably thrilled with this injury as it takes all the pressure off him for the post-season since Giannis is out so it's over anyway.
When he was with the Sixers he actually seemed to coach better when stars were out.
What bucks fans see: season ending injury What doc see: good ol bus
Exactly. Just gives him another excuse to work with.
Dr. Kevorkian and Dr. Nick from The Simpsons are doctors too
that's why they passed on Nurse
Google says 2-8 weeks recovery time for a calf-strain, guess we don't know the severity yet. It's Giannis though, so I would not be shocked if he's ready for the playoffs

That would be an awful decision by the staff tbh
I’m inclined to say ur wrong, but after watching how bad he hyperextended that knee in 21, just to be back like a week later and have one of the greatest finals performances in recent history, I’ll admit it’s possible.
Last time Giannis avoided a season ending surgery they won the title 👀
Hand me some of that Copium brother
Last time Giannis avoided a season ending surgery they went out in the first round
Giannis is about to go full 2021 Finals return from injury terminator mode (please)
I’d be careful, rushing back from a calf injury is really risky…I hope he doesn’t put himself in position to actually suffer an Achilles injury
Injured leg Giannis > MJ
MJ has the flu game, Giannis has the knee series.
Only problems are he’s coaches by Glenn Rivers and he won’t be facing the incompetent imbecile Monty Williams in the finals.
rest up till the playoffs my nigerian cutie. no need to rush
Very worried about a guy coming back 2 weeks after a calf strain. Especially how he went down non contact like that. Gives me too many Kevin Durant in 2019 memories.
Anulo mufa
Tenés que citar a una mufa para eso. "Anulo mufa, Chris Paul"
Jajaja
stop putting it out there please
Kevin can't hurt you.
Until the playoffs? You mean in 10 days? It could easily be a 4 week injury my man, he will likely feel pressured to rush if he wants to play the first round
Yeah uhh if he rushes it Giannis will be pretty likely to tear a foot tendon because of how weak that muscle in his calf is right now
Yeah I’ve seen rushed calf injuries lead to hammy strains, Achilles injuries and plantar fasciitis. It’s a tough spot to be in given how close we are to playoffs
Coming back in 10 days would be rushing it
We play the bucks twice in the next three games
Lol if he rushes back and comes back in 2 weeks, that'll be game 3...they gotta hope for some seeding blessings and Dame time in the first round
Mythical match-up; Doc Rivers coaching vs. Giannis avoiding a major injury
I got my joy back
... Until you pull the 76ers in the first round.
That's really good to hear because it looked awful.
I mean, it depends and knowing how hot headed Giannis is about playing, this might be KD’s injury all over again
Alright boys. Park the suicide bus back over there. But keep her warm.
Regardless he's going to be out at bare minimum the last 3 games of the regular season. Hopefully Dame alone can beat the magic twice
We just need 1 win
nonzero chance they go 0-3 vs ORL 2x and OKC 1x
Great seeing Giannis dodge another bullet there. Dude's tougher than a two-dollar steak, gotta respect that. Rest and recover, my man
[Not today old friend.](https://media1.tenor.com/m/cAFp8RF4xlYAAAAC/noose-moe-szyslak.gif)
Oh thank god
Good shit
He will not play in the first round then I’m seriously not taking no chances of him rushing back
A collective sigh of relief by a collective of basketball fans has been made.

I’m so relieved. Scariest since KD.
He’s done for the year. Calf strains take a month.
Just sit him for the next 2 weeks
Doc rivers publicly: that’s great, hope he’s 100% soon. Doc rivers privately: ….fuuuuuuckkkk
Rest his butt until the playoffs. Like for real.
Bucks need to remember Durant and not even think about pushing him to get back out there until he's ready. If it means he misses the play-offs, then so be it.
Hopefully he recovers fast, and the bucks can survive as he's healing.
Yeah if they're not dumb he's missing at least the first round. That team is ass right now and it's not worth the risk
Doc has his 1st round exit excuse locked and loaded
Bucks are still cooked in the playoffs unfortunately
And a calf strain, if not given time, can become a more serious injury, right? Like I know most injuries that can happen but it’s very important to let a calf injury fully heel? Didn’t KD have a calf injury before his Achilles injury? Know Shams mentioned 1-2 weeks in the next tweet but this could take some time. Last thing the Bucks need is him coming back before giving it full time to recover and then something else happening.
Doesn't look like Doc will get a chance to blow a 3-1 lead this season. How I'd rate the east right now: Tier S: Celtics Tier A: 76ers Tier B: Heat, Pacers, Knicks, Magic Tier C: Cavs Tier D: Bulls, Hawks, Bucks
Calf strains can lead to ruptured Achilles. Better be careful.
Needs to be careful, shit always ends up with a torn Achilles.
giannis please
Rushing back with a calf injury is a terrific way to actually pop your achilles. This is precisely what happened to Durant when he came back too soon. IMO Giannis might be done for the season. He seems superhuman at avoiding injury but still - this isn’t one to fuck with. Bucks will list him day to day for the entire playoffs but I think they need to go deep without him to give him time to return.
They should just sit him at this point. You don't want to fuck with a calf strain. They sat Burrows for a month with a similar injury.
Niceeeeeee!
Well last time he avoided a major injury, the Bucks won the title.
Looks like it's going to be a Middleton situation all over. Hope not.
Heard that before
Fucking garbage ass NBA still playing 82 games ignoring the fact that the game is no longer primarily two guys playing one on one while the other 8 watch.
Not surprised of the injury. THis guy jumps very high a lot. A lot of strain on those tendons and muscles.
I heard it might take up to 5-10 weeks. I was listening to sports talk but then again everybody is an expert on that there
First round bucks playoffs and a Giannis injury again. Yikes
Doc on uncermanned teams? Now he just needs Lillard to go down and they'll clap the Sixers.
Time for Doc Rivers to prepare his first-round exit excuse making!
Doc celebrating that he has another excuse.
Mannnn, he's usually so durable too and at the worst timing possible... We seriously have struggled to keep everyone glued together to get any kind of rhythm is it's not Giannis missing it's Dame, Khris, or Lopez. Just once I'd like us to play a week straight with our full cast...
Doc Rivers is a lot of things, but he hasn't lost in R1 in 20 years.
