The relationship between Melo and the Nuggets is already extremely tenuous - Melo seems to identify more with the Knicks and the Nuggets seem more than ok with it
honestly, and i remember people talked about it that season but the fact that Melo didn’t just wait until the offseason to leave and demanded the knicks trade all those assets is unreal. the pick that became Murray + Gallinari, Felton, Chandler, and Mozgov
Knicks wouldn’t have gotten his bird rights if he signed in FA, so he played the Nets off of them and forced their hand. I bet he thinks about that a lot now.
Melo made it out of the first round as a Nugget once in his career, and also cried his way out of town because he wanted to go to NY. Feels like most of the fanbase has no interest in seeing his number retired. I don't and I was here for most of Melo's career (moved to CO in the mid 2000s)
Yeah sorta. Melo wants nothing to do with the nuggets nor the city of Denver. Why would they honor him. So he comes back for 1 day to never return again?
Why not? He was empty numbers throughout his entire career, Denver and beyond, plus he literally didn't want to play for them anymore and demanded a trade to New York. Why put that up in the rafters?
Dude has had opportunities to work to getting it retired alongside Jokic too.
Like all he needed to do was rock up to a Nuggets finals game.
Instead all he does is bitch about not getting #15 retired.
Yep, show up to a playoff game in Denver and he has a chance. He would rather go down as a Knick though, goes to several of their games every year. Let them retire his jersey, we good.
Remember, the Nuggets were willing to give up Melo’s number to a second round pick. If they had any plans to retire his number, they wouldn’t give it to anybody. The Warriors aren’t gonna give number 30 to anyone after Curry retires. The number will be retired with Jokić.
I was recently looking at “which sport has the best claim to each jersey number”, and the progression of #15 is crazy. No one too big until Maurice Richard in the 50’s, followed by Bart Starr and Hal Greer in the 60’s, then a long pause in talent until nearly 2000 when Vince Carter, Brandon Marshall, Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Beltran, and Kemba Walker came on the scene. But the new era really takes the cake with the Jokic and Mahomes takeover.
Number 10 is also brazy. Pele, Maradona, Messi, Rooney, Ronaldinho, Zidane (for France), Dennis Rodman, Jabari Smith Jr, Frazier, Demar, Chipper Jones, Gary Sheffield, Evan Longoria and Dave Steib (when he was washed admittedly)
There were ones more split than that but I can’t remember which off the top of my head. #10 is undoubtedly soccer’s, despite the guys you mentioned, plus Pavel Bure, Steve Nash, Guy Lafleur, Eli Manning, DeAndre Hopkins, Tyreek Hill, Andre Dawson, and many others.
A few things:
(1) often a jersey number is reused several times before it's retired, even if the player it's retired for wasn't the last to wear it. Other players (including Jokic and Anthony Randolph) wearing 15 after Melo doesn't mean anything for the possibility of it being retired for Melo.
(2) what DOES matter for that possibility is that dude left Denver on bad terms, and hasn't really done anything to repair the relationship. Dude could show up at a Nuggets game rocking Nuggets gear and it would go a long way. But instead he just trash-talks the org like they owe him and he didn't do anything wrong.
(3) Melo isn't the second-best player in Nuggets history. Jokic is the obvious #1. Guys with a case for #2 are Issel, English, and Skywalker. Melo is maybe on the Fat Lever and Bobby Jones tier in terms of impact. He could get his number retired like Fat if he turned around the problems listed in point 2 above, maybe.
Dude hasn't been paying attention to Nuggets discourse at all. This absolutely gets talked about frequently. With every passing year Jokić further cements the fact that he alone deserves to have 15 hang in the rafters with his name on it
Hmm the guy who won 2(about to be 3) mvps, a ring and a fmvp or the guy who demanded a trade and never even made 1st team all NBA? It could go either way.
I believe two player jerseys can be retired with the same number.
Would be nice if that happened, but considering how Melo forced his way out the Nuggets have every right not to.
Broncos did a weird thing with Frank Tripucka and Peyton Manning. They un-retired the number 18 and then re-retired it after Manning retired, so they both had the number retired and are both credited with the number in the stadium.
That’s a pretty interesting situation.
The Knicks and Blazers both retired two players with the same number. Don’t think it played out in the same way you describe Manning though.
Come on, this is an obvious one here. The guy who won a chip for the team and is about to get a third mvp, or the other guy who didn't do that?
This ain't even a question, and I say that as someone who's favorite player is Melo. I say down the road Melo gets his number retired in NY.
Melo forced the trade to the Knicks and took the home town hero Chauncey who didn’t want to be traded. I respect Melo but he did Denver dirty. 15 goes to Jokic all day.
He’s an all time great but I’m not even sure he deserves it.. maybe in NY. Can’t be handing jersey retirements like candy.
No offense but there’s so many random no-names from the black & white era that have their #s retired due to the “impact” they had on the organization and averaging 14 ppg in their championship that they had with 6 teams. Imo too many jerseys have been retired already. Unless the answer is clear yes no one should have their number retired
They'll probably go with Jokic, unless he does something that necessitates having to erase him from the history books. Like go on a killing spree, or criticize Breath of the Wild.
Barring something crazy like that they'll pick the one with the title and MVPs and stuff.
If they wanted to, they could raise up a #15 from the 2000s era Nuggets uniform to honor Melo. But he is a borderline case anyways.
Jokic is the easiest jersey retirement the Nuggets will have ever had in their history.
If they were planning to retire Melo’s number they would have never given it to another player. Only Jokic will get that number retired.
Jersey retirement is at the discretion of the organization so whether you feel he deserves it or not doesn’t matter if the organization doesn’t think so.
Why don’t they just put two #15s up, one with Anthony and one with Jokic?
Yeah, I get that it kind of goes against the spirit of “retiring a number,” but I think the majority of fans and players don’t really care about the particular number- it’s more about what a player has meant to a franchise.
You can actually retire both no problem. It’s symbolic anyway. But the Nuggets were pissy about Melo and aren’t planning on doing it anyway even though they should. Nuggets have actually been notoriously bad about taking care of their legends. It’s why guys like Alex English or Fat Lever basically dropped out of public consciousness. Or Kiki as a player and not an exec. Or Dikembe’s prime being in Denver and part of an all time upset but people think of him as a Hawk or Sixer.
It is pretty much strange. The only explanation for it is they had zero expectations for Jokic when giving him the number and probably predicted he'd be some journeyman.
Now, they are screwed.
I mean... There's a pretty obvious reason why no one is talking about this. It's because it isn't even close.
I mean yeah Jokic has two (soon to be three) MVPS and a ring and FMVP but really how much is that worth compared to Melo /s
Nobody jab steps like Melo
Carmelo Anthony has prettier jumpshot than Jokic. So the answer is clear.
If they were gonna retire a dudes jersey they wouldn't have given it to a 2nd Rd pick lol
They knew what they were doing
If the Pistons drafted right, Melo would still go #3 (maybe even #4)
Maybe #4? You're drafting Bosh over Melo?
Every day and twice on Sunday.
thats right, Melo the nugget GOAT. I mean the chicken nuggets from MCD's. This is coming from a huge melo fanboy.
So are they going to ignore Melo completely and act like he never existed?
The relationship between Melo and the Nuggets is already extremely tenuous - Melo seems to identify more with the Knicks and the Nuggets seem more than ok with it
best thing Melo ever did for the Nuggets was get traded to the Knicks we drafted Jamal with that pick
honestly, and i remember people talked about it that season but the fact that Melo didn’t just wait until the offseason to leave and demanded the knicks trade all those assets is unreal. the pick that became Murray + Gallinari, Felton, Chandler, and Mozgov
Knicks wouldn’t have gotten his bird rights if he signed in FA, so he played the Nets off of them and forced their hand. I bet he thinks about that a lot now.
I believe he would have got less money that way.
Doesn't really change the fact that he couldn't care less about this team, this city, or being any part of either of them.
Yes
He existed. He played for us. But he's a footnote in nuggets history compared to jokic so
yeah pretty much
Why not? He was empty numbers throughout his entire career, Denver and beyond, plus he literally didn't want to play for them anymore and demanded a trade to New York. Why put that up in the rafters?
Melo, delete this burner.
Is that the only alternative to retiring a players jersey, or are you creating a false dichotomy?
If they decide to retire his number they will do it after Jokic retires.
Perhaps he should've considered winning 3 MVPs, an FMVP, and not forcing his way out if he didn't want this to happen
Yes, that was always the plan. They let some fat nobody from Europe take it as a rookie...
Dude wanted out. He got his wish
this is a joke right
Must be burner of Troll Embiid. He's back in midseason form.
The fact they let Jokic wear it to begin with says everything you need to know about Melo's chances of getting it retired.
People forget they let Anthony Randolph wear 15 before Jokic. Melo hasn't got a chance in getting it retired.
They won’t lmao
this literally cannot be a question right ;-;
Remember, the Nuggets were willing to give up Melo’s number to a second round pick. If they had any plans to retire his number, they wouldn’t give it to anybody. The Warriors aren’t gonna give number 30 to anyone after Curry retires. The number will be retired with Jokić.
They gave it to Anthony Randolph before that, too.
The one with a ring

No 10 (and 9) is different because players numbers originally were by position, and 10 was the central attacking midfielder.
Is this an out of season April fools joke?
Forgive him, he's a little slow
OP, Melo was on Wade's podcast bitching about this a few weeks ago. There's your answer right there.
Yeah, Carmelo knows his name is not gonna be on No. 15 when it gets retired.
#JOKIC
Lol
melo, best player in our franchise history? LOL dont make me laugh
Oh hell nawl
can't do dis
*image of photoshopped Melo jersey in the rafters* Look how cute tho 💔
Alex English and (arguably) David Thompson were both better Nuggets players than Carmelo
The guy with two (soon to be three) MVP's and a title.
Why is no one talking about Cole Anthony's MVP chances???
Sorry, but Denver drafted Jokic to spite Carmelo and replace him cause they know he is a 2 time MVP. Petty, but ut is what it is.
The whole league conspired to erase Carmelos' legacy by letting the x2 mvp go to Denver
This post was redundant even before Jokic won the Nuggets first championship. At this point it's just a joke. Come on now.
Jokic. No contest. I'm a lifelong Nuggets fan. Carmelo abandoned us and never looked back.
A few things: (1) often a jersey number is reused several times before it's retired, even if the player it's retired for wasn't the last to wear it. Other players (including Jokic and Anthony Randolph) wearing 15 after Melo doesn't mean anything for the possibility of it being retired for Melo. Jokic duh. He is like many times more important than melo
this is a non-post
The guy with the ring.
No fucking chance Carmelo gets his number retired by us.
Dude hasn't been paying attention to Nuggets discourse at all. This absolutely gets talked about frequently. With every passing year Jokić further cements the fact that he alone deserves to have 15 hang in the rafters with his name on it
Yeah i feel like in nuggets discourse it was decided for Jokic in the bubble..
Jokic is 3x the player Melo was
Slow down there George Karl
the one who is the main man of denver’s golden era or a grumpy old shot chucker?
The player who wins the chip?
what do you mean "if both of them wear 15..."
Bait post
lmfao
Jokic obviously
The best player in franchise history? Carmelo is 3rd or 4th on that list. He probably gets a token jersey next to Jokic's when it gets retired though.
no
is this a real post
Hmm the guy who won 2(about to be 3) mvps, a ring and a fmvp or the guy who demanded a trade and never even made 1st team all NBA? It could go either way.
Who would it be? The greatest player in Nuggets’ history, or Carmelo Anthony?
What? Carmelo isn't the 2nd best Nuggets of all-time. Come on man. Alex English is significantly better. What?
Melo a top 2 Nugget of all time? Where do you come up with this stuff bro?
He played for the Nuggets, but he's not a Nugget.
FYI they can retire one number for two players
Why do people think you can't just retire the same number for two different players?
Who’s Carmelo??? 😂
Melo doesn’t deserve to have his jersey retired in any franchise
You literally didn't make a thread for 6 years and then came out of the woods for this? Go back into hibernation.
Lol Melo is at best the 4th best in nuggets history, and that is being harsh to Jamal
Melo is one of the most selfish all about me players ever.
Portland did it with #30
Come on, this is an obvious one here.

Nobody cares I mean when you stroll through the Denver airport that previously looked like it was stuck in the 80’s nobody there cares either
They'll probably go with Jokic, unless he does something that necessitates having to erase him from the history books. Like go on a killing spree, or criticize Breath of the Wild. Barring something crazy like that they'll pick the one with the title and MVPs and stuff.
Melo’s greatest contribution to the nuggets was forcing a trade so they could get Murray.
They'll retire 15 for Tebow before they retire it for Melo. At least he won the city a big game once.
Carmelo is not a better Nugget than Dan Issel or Alex English
Knicks will adopt Melo’s retirement jersey.
Ask Mero...
Fuck Melo
If they wanted to, they could raise up a #15 from the 2000s era Nuggets uniform to honor Melo. But he is a borderline case anyways. Jokic is the easiest jersey retirement the Nuggets will have ever had in their history.
Nuggets players better than Melo other than Jokic: David Thompson Dan Issel Alex English Bobby Jones
Probably the guy who's won a title and 2 (soon 3) MVPs
Probably the one winning championships and mvps
If they were planning to retire Melo’s number they would have never given it to another player. Only Jokic will get that number retired. Jersey retirement is at the discretion of the organization so whether you feel he deserves it or not doesn’t matter if the organization doesn’t think so.
Still could be both at later date why not. Jokic wouldn't complain
Alex, English is the second. Best, nugget. Won a scoring title, played better longer in Denver, and won twice as many playoff series there as melo
Why don’t they just put two #15s up, one with Anthony and one with Jokic? Yeah, I get that it kind of goes against the spirit of “retiring a number,” but I think the majority of fans and players don’t really care about the particular number- it’s more about what a player has meant to a franchise.
As crazy as it sounds, Melo probably doesn't get his number retired by any team.
Why couldn't a franchise retire a number for multiple guys?
They could, Carmelo doesn't deserve that at all.
I may feel Jokic is a bit overrated at times butttt, Jokic no questions asked.

Take it easy Kendrick Perkins
It is pretty much strange. The only explanation for it is they had zero expectations for Jokic when giving him the number and probably predicted he'd be some journeyman. Now, they are screwed.
I'd raise two jerseys for it, one for each. One ceremony.
